Parents are so important to teens' success. Even if you feel like your teens are annoyed by you, your efforts are very important. For many reasons, however, parents often have a hard time motivating or inspiring teens. Sometimes the teens assume that the parents are biased and can't see the teens objectively. Other times teens don't want to be controlled, and so they will resist the advice that comes from parents. However, teens are much more inclined to listen to mentors or coaches. They are also excited to share and learn from their peers. Wise parents can leverage this to recruit help in motivating or inspiring their teens. This is how we do it in the Ivy League Challenge.-----To register for the Ivy League Challenge, visit our websiteTo follow on Instagram:  @TheIvyLeagueChallengeTo join us on our Facebook group for parentsOr schedule a meeting with Steve here

Attention Juniors! This is the week that you should be sending out your emails to future recommendation letter writers. You've worked hard to be a great student. Your teachers love you. You might think that is enough to ensure you will get a great letter of recommendation. But the reality is that very few teachers ever receive any kind of training on how to write an outstanding letter of recommendation. So those letters often end up sounding the same... ("I love having [name] in my class, they are always prepared for class, they ask great questions, they help out their peers... you'd be luck to have him/her on your campus...")If you plan to apply to a school that is selective, then nearly all of the recommendation letters for nearly all of the applicants will sound nearly identical. And yet recommendation letters can be the difference maker and ensure you get accepted rather than rejected. Too many of us approach life with the philosophy of "play not to lose". Once, when I was in college, I was able to play on a intramural basketball team. Our team made it all the way to championship game. At half time, we were losing that game so badly that we decided to change our approach. Instead of playing safe, we were going to play without any fear. Amazingly, we came all the way back and even won the game at the buzzer. But playing not-to-lose takes away your power. Playing not-to-lose means playing safe. And ironically, when you play that way, ironically, you often lose anyway. The college prep equivalent is making all your decisions through the filter of "what is most impressive to an admissions officer"?Listen in to learn why that is the wrong question to answer, and what you can do instead to play to win.-----To register for the Ivy League Challenge, visit our website. To follow on Instagram:  @TheIvyLeagueChallengeTo join us on our Facebook group for parents:Or schedule a meeting with Steve here

On this day, June 30th, in legal history, the 26th Amendment was ratified making the legal voting age a uniform 18.The amendment is straight and to the point, consistent of two sections and holding:Section 1The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.Section 2The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. The history of the reduction of the voting age is inextricably tied to Vietnam. During the 1960s, there was a growing movement across the United States to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. This push was fueled in part by the Vietnam War, as young men between 18 and 21 were being drafted into the military. Advocates argued that if these individuals were old enough to fight, they should be old enough to vote. Facing legislative inaction, supporters of lowering the voting age included a provision in a 1970 bill that extended the Voting Rights Act. However, the Supreme Court ruled in Oregon v. Mitchell that Congress couldn't lower the voting age for state and local elections. To avoid confusion and costs associated with maintaining separate voting rolls, Congress proposed and the states ratified the Twenty-sixth Amendment, which lowered the voting age to 18 for all elections. The US Supreme Court has ruled that universities cannot use race as a factor in admissions, overturning decades of precedent. The court's 6-3 decision stated that programs at Harvard College and the University of North Carolina violated the Constitution's equal protection clause. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court, rejected the argument that these programs were necessary for campus diversity. The ruling is expected to lead to fewer Black and Hispanic students at top universities and require many schools to revise their admissions policies. President Joe Biden disagreed strongly with the decision, claiming it effectively ends affirmative action in college admissions.Rather than recount the stretched logic and thinly masked reasoning behind the majority's overturning decades of precedent, I'll summarize Justice Jackson's dissent. Justice Jackson highlights the existence of significant racial disparities in the health, wealth, and well-being of American citizens, which have been inherited from the past and continue to persist today. She argues that these disparities contradict the fundamental principle of equality and suggests that holistic admissions programs, like the one implemented by the University of North Carolina (UNC), are a necessary solution to address this issue. She joins Justice Sotomayor's opinion that race can be considered in college admissions to ensure racial diversity, emphasizing the universal benefits of such considerations. She counters the contention made by the plaintiff, Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA), that considering race in admissions is unfair, stating that it ignores the historical and ongoing impact of discrimination and the transmission of inequality across generations. Ultimately, Justice Jackson dissents from the majority's decision to restrict the use of race in admissions, arguing that it hampers progress without a legal, historical, logical, or justifiable basis. A particularly salient quote from Justice Jackson's dissent:With let-them-eat-cake obliviousness, today, the majority pulls the ripcord and announces “colorblindness for all” by legal fiat. But deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life. And having so detached itself from this country's actual past and present experiences, the Court has now been lured into interfering with the crucial work that UNC and other institutions of higher learning are doing to solve America's real-world problems.Supreme Court Rejects Use of Race in University Admissions (3)“A Tragedy for Us All”: Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's Dissent | The NationIn a 6-3 decision, the US Supreme Court sided with a Christian website designer who argued that her freedom of speech entitled her to create wedding pages exclusively for opposite-sex couples. The court determined that anti-discrimination laws, including the specific Colorado measure involved in the case, must allow for exceptions for businesses engaged in expressive activities. Supreme Court Backs Web Designer Against Same-Sex Marriage (1)The US Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on the legality of President Joe Biden's plan to cancel $430 billion in student loan debt, which aims to benefit up to 43 million Americans. The conservative justices expressed skepticism during arguments in February, considering legal challenges brought by six conservative-leaning states and two individual borrowers. The ruling has significant implications for the 26 million borrowers who sought relief after Biden announced the plan but faced opposition from lower courts. Biden's plan, fulfilling a campaign promise, seeks to cancel a portion of the $1.6 trillion federal student loan debt, but it faced criticism from Republicans who viewed it as an overreach of presidential authority. The plan would forgive up to $10,000 or $20,000 in federal student debt based on income and grant eligibility. The Biden administration argued that the plan is authorized under the 2003 HEROES Act, which empowers the education secretary to modify student financial assistance during emergencies. The legal challenge faced opposition from a federal judge in Missouri but was found to have proper standing by the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Additionally, a federal judge in Texas ruled that the plan exceeded the administration's authority. Public opinion on the debt relief plan is divided along partisan lines, with Democrats generally supportive and Republicans opposed. The Supreme Court's ruling will have significant implications for student loan borrowers and the Biden administration's efforts to address student debt.Supreme Court to decide fate of Biden student loan forgiveness | ReutersOpenAI Inc. is facing another class-action copyright lawsuit that alleges its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is trained on books without obtaining permission from the authors. The lawsuit claims that ChatGPT's machine learning training dataset includes content that OpenAI copied without consent, credit, or compensation. OpenAI and other generative AI companies have been encountering intellectual property and privacy lawsuits, as regulators and Congress attempt to regulate the industry. This latest lawsuit follows a previous class-action suit against OpenAI, accusing the company's AI models of scraping personal information from the internet in violation of privacy laws. It also references a separate copyright suit filed in 2022 regarding OpenAI's AI coding assistant, Copilot. Every loving parent wants their children to be happy. But happiness can be elusive-- sometimes seeking happiness seems to push the happiness away, but getting lost in another activity and forgetting about pursuing happiness can produce great joy and happiness.Similarly, many parents and teens want to get into a great college. And the motivation that teens feel to get into a great college can be exactly the gift they need to do the work to lead a better, more meaningful life.Along the way, some teens and families of teens find that motivation to get into a great school turns into desperation. Once that energy has shifted to desperation, college prep shifts from being a healthy, amazingly motivating gift-- to a toxic, overwhelming nightmare. But it doesn't have to be this way. Listen in to learn how this happens and what we should focus on instead in order to keep college prep both healthy and effective. -----To register for the Ivy League Challenge, visit our website. To follow on Instagram:  @TheIvyLeagueChallengeTo join us on our Facebook group for parents:Or schedule a meeting with Steve here

The College Prep Gorilla

In the early 1990's, Christ Chabris and Daniel Simons did a study at Harvard. They asked participants to count the number times a basketball was passed between different people. While the people passed the ball, a person in a gorilla suit walked into the middle of them, pounded his chest, and then walked off screen. Shockingly, roughly half of the participants were so focused on their job-- counting the passes-- that they didn't even see the gorilla. This experiment reveals two things: that we are missing a lot of what goes on around us, and we all unaware of how much we are missing. And we do this in our college prep all the time. Because we focus so much on the task we have been given, we can easily miss the big ideas that are right in front of us-- the gorilla. Audio of the opinion of the U.S. Supreme Court in Fisher v. University of Texas (2016).  The case I'll be reading today is similar to a 2003 case I read a couple of weeks ago, Grutter v. Bollinger. Both involved white females who had applied for admission to a particular university and were subsequently denied. In this case, Abigail Fisher applied for admission to the University of Texas but was denied. In keeping with the Court's ruling in Grutter, the University of Texas considered many factors in the admissions process, including race. Fisher sued the University arguing that the University's consideration of race in the admissions process violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The district court disagreed and so did the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. When the case made its way before the Supreme Court, it held that the appellate court erred by not applying the strict scrutiny standard in its decision. The case was remanded, the appellate court reaffirmed the lower court's decision, holding that the admissions process indeed satisfied the strict scrutiny standard.   Access this SCOTUS opinion and other essential case information here. The Supreme Court's conservative majority appeared skeptical of race-conscious admission policies at the University of North Carolina and Harvard University throughout five hours of oral arguments on Monday. If the Court decides against the universities, it could issue a ruling broad enough to overturn decades of precedent permitting the limited use of race in college admissions and even, according to Vox Supreme Court correspondent Ian Millhiser, “prohibit the government from considering race in virtually any context, including efforts to voluntarily integrate racially segregated grade schools and other institutions." We'll talk about the cases and their potential outcomes and what they may mean for California. Motivation is overrated. It really is. Think about it:1. motivation is NOT the key to winning-- we know this because the winning and losing teams are both motivated to win.2. Motivation wants fast results-- but real excellence wants consistency over the long haul.3. Boredom (or any number of other common challenges) can kill motivation. Here are six things that will help you create the success you want:1. Your environment2. Your peer group3. Habits and systems4. Do you ever feel like preparing for college is like fighting for limited seats on a train? This can make you feel anxious, overwhelmed, and frustrated. After all, there are only so many 'seats' available, right? There are only so many valedictorians, so many science olympiad winners, and only so many captains of the team. The seats on the "we're better than everyone else at everything" train are indeed very limited.  And there are countless people fighting over them. But there is a better way. In fact, what if the selective colleges you feel like you are fighting others to get into aren't that interested in passengers of that train? Because the train tracks were laid by someone else before you, selective colleges are more likely to only want a few of the passengers of the "better than everyone at everything" train, and are more interested in finding students who paved their own path. How do you pave your own path? 1. do the self-reflective, introspective work to figure out your core values.2. identify a problem in your community that violates one of those core values.3. work to begin solving it.4. discover you don't know how to solve it-- yet.5. do effective outreach to professors or other experts who are solving this problem, and either join their team or recruit them to join your team. 6. solve the problem (or make meaningful progress)7. effectively communicate your core values and impact project in your college application. This is not only orders of magnitude more effective than fighting for spots on the train, it is also easier, more enjoyable, and actually prepares you for a successful and fulfilling life. The ability to align your choices with your core values not only makes your application stand out for admissions officers, but it is also the key to a more fulfilling life. Being able to identify and solve problems in your community not only provides evidence to the admissions officers that you truly do have those core values but it also shows them that you have the emotional intelligence, communication skills, leadership, grit, and resourcefulness to solve real problems in the real world. Oh, and if you are able to solve real problems in the real world as a high school student, you will also be empowered to solve real problems in the real world as a professional-- nothing prepares you better to start your own successful business or earn meaningful promotions in a larger company.I teach all of this in the Ivy League Challenge. The ideal age for the challenge is grades 8-10, but some students are ready earlier, and any student who is serious about becoming competitive for a selective school will want to learn this before applying-- even if they are rising seniors now. Registration for the July 14th cohort is now open. We will meet weekly on Thursdays for 12 weeks, beginning July 14th. Please reach out to me and schedule a discovery call if you need clarification on anything before you register, but don't delay.
