In the second part of our series on the Luaka Bop record label, this month TNT brings you a total jammer - 2013's "Who is William Onyeabor?" by the mysterious and prolific Nigerian electro Afro-funk pioneer William Onyeabor. The first official re-issue of Onyeabor's music since being recorded in the late 70s/early 80s, this compilation serves up Onyeabor's space-age synthesizers, disco-funk rhythms and pulsing drum machines - all created, produced and recorded by one fantastic man.

This week on the show, we're joined by Sam Shepherd, AKA Floating Points. His discography is full of beautiful and strange electronic music—bubbling Buchalas, skittering beats, washes of synthesized sound, and even moody, spacious post-rock. But underneath it all, his love of jazz is clear. In 2021, he teamed with an actual jazz legend: the late Pharoah Sanders, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra for Promises, a single 46-minute composition broken into nine movements. Though the artists were separated by decades in age, their approach is simpatico. Just as Shepherd has moved between genres and styles, so did Pharoah. His early work with John and Alice Coltrane established him as a dynamic, sometimes frighteningly intense sideman, and his first run of records, including 1969's Karma, featuring “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” helped set the stage for what we now call “spiritual jazz.” But Sanders, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 81, cared very little about what genre you filed his records under. “I just play whatever I feel like playing,” he told The New Yorker. Sanders stayed restless and creative—listen to his playing on Sonny Sharrock's masterful Ask the Ages or his works with Bill Laswell, and you'll hear what we mean. In 1977, he waded into deeply personal waters with the self-titled Pharoah, which will be reissued by Luaka Bop on September 15th. Exploring new age adjacent sounds, funk, and passionate ballads, it's a radical departure from his early work, but perfectly in keeping with Sanders' unpredictable ethos. Likewise, Promises is hardly the “back to basics” late career album you might expect an 80-year-old artist to make. It's its own thing, a meditative sojourn that relies on silence as much as sound. And next week, on September 20th, Floating Points will be joined by past Transmissions guest Shabaka Hutchings, as well as Caribou, Four Tet, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and others for the first-ever staging of Promises live at the Hollywood Bowl. Ahead of that show, Shepherd joined us from his studio to discuss his his years collecting records, making Promises—and we even got him to reveal Pharoah's favorite place to eat in LA. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts, like Drifter's Sympathy, with Emil Amos of Grails, Om, Holy Sons, who will be our guest next week on Transmissions. And of course No Way Out: An Oral History of Sunburned Hand of the Man, curated and produced by J Kelly Davis and presented by Aquarium Drunkard and Talkhouse. Back soon. Next week on the show, Jarvis Taveniere of Woods.
If you ever wanna feel stupid or not crisp-and-clear, have a conversation with Jesse Kates of The Sexy Accident.Wow.I've been lucky to have a ton of tremendous and amazing people join me for episodes of the Badass Records podcast, but this guy...he just -- as the kids say -- hits different. You should -- were you so inclined -- check out his bandcamp, buy some of his merch', keep tabs on when his outfit's giggin' next, etc.Really great stuff.Jesse and I talked about a number of things, included in which were -- of course -- a few of his favorite albums. I botched things a touch, but they were these, nonetheless:Seamonsters, The Wedding Present (1991)The Cure's Wish (1992)Icky Mettle by Archers of Loaf (1993)Long Fin Killie's Houdini (1995)1972, Josh Rouse (2003), andQuadiliacha's Es Muerto (1997) (the one I botched)I hope you'll check out this chat; I thought it was awesome, but then again...I always do.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are clips from a tune called, "Fantastic Man" by William Onyeabor. This, I found, on his 2013 record, World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? (c/o Luaka Bop, Inc.).
Escucha el programa dedicado a The Black Keys
In a small village in southern Nigeria where Muslims and Christians live and dance together, the pious, devout Muslim Alhaji Waziri Oshomah infuses his love of highlife with the teachings of Islam in the song “Jealousy.” The track is featured on the third volume of record label Luaka Bop's “World Spirituality Classics” series, dedicated to spreading positivity.
I don't do these year-end jazz mixes every year. Most of the time I'm just too lazy. I don't keep close track of what came out and what I liked. At some point this year I started tossing individual tracks into a playlist and that helped me remember what I enjoyed in 2021. So here's my Jazz 2021 mix. It is by no means a "Best of" mix. It's merely a collection of jazz-ish tracks from albums I liked this year. And of course some of the tunes lean a bit toward ambient. Cheers! Alice Coltrane's ashram album Kirtan: Turiya Sings gets first release.Michelle Coltrane joins Maggie to discuss her Mother's latest release from Impulse! Records Kirtan: Turiya Sings . After releasing the wondrous Transfiguration in 1978, documenting a live concert with drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Reggie Workman, Alice Coltrane retreated from public life to serve as swamini in an ashram she founded in Agoura Hills, California. Though she resurfaced briefly at John Coltrane tribute concerts during the 1990s and released a final album, Translinear Light, in 2004, it was widely thought she had abandoned music for over two decades. However, during that time, she was playing alone and with others for Sunday "kirtans" (services), and she occasionally recorded devotional chants for her followers. In 2017, Luaka Bop released The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda; its music was compiled from four privately pressed (and professionally recorded) cassettes. The first of these was 1982's Turiya Sings, and marked the first recording of her singing voice, accompanied by organ, strings, synths, and in places, minimal sound effects. Commercially unavailable, it has been streaming on YouTube for years. Kirtan: Turiya Sings, issued by Impulse!, presents that album in a startling new context. This rare mix -- unheard even by Ravi Coltrane until he was producing Translinear Light -- presents Alice's prayerful rendition of nine traditional Hindu chants called "bhajans," offered with only her Wurlitzer organ in support.Source: https://www.allmusic.com/album/kirtan-turiya-sings-mw0003535709Source: https://www.alicecoltrane.comSource: http://www.impulserecords.com/artistsThis episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast.
Adrian Younge, Light on the Horizon, tiré de l'album «The American Negro» (Jazz is Dead, 2021) clip audio Gabriels, In Loving Memory, tiré du EP Love and Hate in a Different Time (Gabriels, 2021) Elza Soares, Nos, single (Deck, 2021) voir le clip Pharoah Sanders, Floating Points & The London Symphony Orchestra, Movement 4, tiré de l'album Promises (Luaka Bop, 2021) Sarah Maison, J’avais pas compris, tiré du EP Soleils (Muzul Productions, 2021). This is Unsung a Crack Magazine podcast with Sonos Radio where the world's greatest artists reveal their heroes who never caught the spotlight. Today, we are in conversation with a bonafide pop music legend. Dr. Susan Rogers is one of the world's greatest sound engineers and record producers – and one of the tiny number of women in the profession. If you've ever had a dancefloor moment to 'When Doves Cry' or 'Raspberry Beret' by Prince, you can thank Susan. The technical force behind albums like Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times and Around the World in a Day, she was with Prince through the sleepless nights and notorious 24-hour recording sessions of his commercial peak, from 1983 to 1987. In 1988, she left to produce other artists, resulting in some of the biggest hits of the 90s. She then took her earnings and went back to school, finally graduating from high school aged 44 and then obtaining a PhD in music and psychology. Susan's Unsung choice is a band she produced, who she felt never reached the heights they deserved: Geggy Tah. A jazz, folk, alt and experimental indie duo comprised of Tommy Jordon and Greg Kurstin, together they released three albums over seven years on David Byrne's label Luaka Bop – the first two produced by Susan. From Chilean folk to Latin Hip-Hop to G-Funk, the "The North Pole" web series is chock full of amazing sounds from around the Bay. Locally sourced music is a big part of what makes this sharp political comedy about Oakland so ... Oakland. So we invited director Yvan Iturriaga for a deep conversation about five cuts from the series soundtrack (shout out to music supervisor Dion Decibels!) and why they matter to him. Plus, we've got two album recommendations from Bar Shiru's music director Daniel Gahr: one classic compilation from Luaka Bop, and the debut from an up-and-coming avant garde jazz musician from Seattle. Delicate Steve is a guitar hero for our time with no obvious North Star guiding his musical choices and no piety for the The Church of Shredders. In today's interview, he talks about being a child of Napster, and the self-taught musical education that came from downloading a world of music has led to a career of music that doesn't fit neatly in any box. He started at Luaka Bop, where his personal musical vision was thought of as psychedelic world music (the "psychedelic" part sounds right), and now he's on Anti-, where his instrumental music simply seems personal and at home. He recently released The Christmas Album, but as this conversation shows, Steve Marion is hardly a holiday true believer and approaches the songs as songs instead of as attachments to the season. In his talk with host Alex Rawls, he discusses Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, and his approach to instrumental music. Alex also talks this week to journalist David Dennis about Outkast's "Player's Ball." The song fits squarely into the "12 Songs" mission because its story is very much a business one, but it also reveals that Christmas doesn't live equally in everybody's imagination. David and Alex talk about why, as well as the role Sean "Puffy" Combs' video for the song played in shaping Outkast's image.
The Album: William Onyeabor: Who Is William Onyeabor? (2013) Benjamin Booker rocks. His soulful blend of blues, rock soul and punk, together with hella honest lyrics and an inimitable voice has moved folks across his self titled debut and latest album Witness. He joined us to talk about his discovery of Luaka Bop’s World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? It was love at first listen. He loved the moog and the drums, the minimalism and the disco elements. He loved the message. We talked about William Onyeabor's reclusiveness, foreshadowing in lyrics, African music across many genres and the coolness of a white cowboy hat. A taste of what we'll be putting out in 2013.

The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, de Los Amigos Invisibles.

A taste of the best new Luaka Bop flavors.
We think Paul Diddy who normally does our podcasts does a great job. And in talking to the folks at iTunes they tell us it would be a good thing if we posted podcasts more often. Problem is we only put out so many albums a year and we don't want anyone, us included, to take the little jewels that Paul does for granted. But luckily we have a solution, we just started working with a band called Javelin. We probably won't put an album out from them for quite some time but in the meantime they do these cassette mixes of their own music. Hence let us introduce Javelin:
A freshly cut pineapple, mixed in the alley, imported from the other America.
