Welcome to “When Words Fail, Music Speaks”—the podcast that explores how melody and lyric can lift us out of dark moments and turn prayer into a personal soundtrack. In this episode, host James Cox sits down with Alfred Hopton, a spokesperson for PrayerSong.com. Alfred shares how he transforms heartfelt stories into custom‑written songs that act like prayers—gifts that speak directly to the heart and often bring listeners to tears. From nostalgic record‑store wanderings and the magic of classic CD havens like Amoeba, to vivid memories of live shows with icons from U 2 to Sammy Hagar, the conversation weaves together music's power to soothe depression, strengthen faith, and celebrate life's milestones.Listeners will get an inside look at the Prayer Song process—how a simple questionnaire fuels lyricists, producers, and musicians to craft a one‑of‑a‑kind track in just seven days. Alfred also recounts personal anecdotes—playing for his daughter's baseball trips, surprising veterans at games, and the emotional reaction videos that prove a song can be the ultimate, unforgettable gift.Whether you're battling a low day, searching for a unique way to honor a loved one, or simply love the story of music's healing reach, this episode proves that when words fall short, a song can say it all. Tune in, press play, and let the music speak.Website:https://prayersong.com
Blending Ecuadorian pasillo, Peruvian psychedelic cumbia, and a deeply cinematic instrumental approach, Hermanos Gutiérrez trace a musical identity rooted in memory, movement, and Latin American tradition. They also discuss their family ties between Ecuador and Switzerland, their passion for vinyl collecting, and a new sonic chapter ahead of their next album, arriving September 2026. God lytting!

While on a sampling trip in California's Lassen Volcanic National Park, researchers stopped to sample a rather boring stream on their hike to Boiling Springs Lake. But when they incubated that water sample back in the lab, they discovered an amoeba that could still move and divide at 145 F, a new record for a eukaryotic cell. Microbiologist Angela Oliverio joins Host Flora Lichtman to describe the “fire amoeba,” Incendiamoeba cascadensis.Plus, planetary scientist Johanna Teske takes us to exoplanet TOI-561b, a far-off “wet lava ball” which was recently observed by the James Webb Space Telescope. Researchers believe that the planet has the strongest evidence yet of an atmosphere on a rocky planet outside our solar system.Guests:Dr. Angela Oliverio is an assistant professor in the department of biology at Syracuse University. Dr. Johanna Teske is a staff scientist at Carnegie Science Earth and Planets Laboratory in Washington, D.C.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Another festival coverage episode? We're back to back with Asian film festivals and Ben returns to Singapore to cover the hottest films from the festival circuit and the region for the 36th Singapore International Film Festival. Our film coverage spans the most hotly contested tickets (Silent Friend, Girl, Resurrection, Sentimental Value), cinema classics (Matador, Water, Bye Bye Love), and promising first features from the region (Amoeba, A Useful Ghost, Old Man and His Car)This is a spicy and fun episode where Ben reflects honestly about his festival experience and Singapore's cinema culture, as well as sharing his optimism with the concurrent ground-up efforts (The Daily, FFIGS) reinvigorating that culture. On top of all that, we also find the time to do a very special celebration in the middle of the episode.Links:Correspondence / The DailyBen's piece on the Cinephile PassFFIGSDeepa Mehta Write-upLuca Guadagnino video on costumes Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers at MoMAMadame Morible Wicked Witch memeInterview with Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke (forthcoming!)Correspond with us at our FREE patreon, discord server, and our socials @ www.deepcutpod.com Timestamps:00:00:00 Intro00:03:15 Festival as a whole 00:08:45 Netflix acquisition of WB00:11:51 Festival operations00:20:33 Festival passes00:24:15 Banned films00:27:48 SGIFilmFeud00:28:25 Correspondence / The Daily00:30:56 FFIGS00:34:40 Optimism00:38:14 The films / Bye Bye Love (1974) dir. On Saturday morning, a 45-year-old man died in Kerala of amoebic meningocephalitis. This is the fourth death reported in Kerala in less than a month of this rare but deadly infection, colloquially known as brain-eating amoeba. This year alone, over 40 cases have been reported in the State, with 11 people undergoing treatment in hospitals at present. The Health Department has invoked the Kerala Public Health Act to launch preventive and control measures, as it emerges that perhaps all waterbodies — wells, ponds, canals, swimming pools, water theme parks — could be a potential source of amoebic infection for people using them, unless these are regularly cleaned and maintained in good condition. What is this brain-eating amoeba? Why is a rare infection being seen in dozens of people across one Southern state? How is it diagnosed and treated? And how can water be used safely? Things Discussed: Bryce: NO CEILING. Most talented quarterback in the history of the program. Offense will need to mitigate pass pro, Link was okay against a Keyshaun James-Newby. Think it'll be like 2023 offense. OL? Crippen's kind of game: more of a mental test than a physical one, because New Mexico had to slant and stunt etc. Will need to use Bryce's legs in Oklahoma. Chip: Made Michigan's normal stuff work. Everything is packaged now. Did a good job of keeping Bryce calm. Defense: UNM wasn't running sustainable offense. Payne and Etta took advantage of physical matchups, a little disappointed in the other DTs (UFR is coming at noon). What UNM was doing was playing 2-3 TEs to get Michigan's 5-2 personnel on the field so they could spread them out and attack Guy. Jyaire: Really good but for two bad plays. Eyes on Cole Sullivan and Nate Marshall. OKLAHOMA: Mateer is a Tate. He's going to have to make plays because their OL has some if's: both Ts should be back—sounds like those were both precautionary—but they might have to play a 2nd true freshman at RG (moving the RG to LG). We don't always cover compilation albums, but when we do, we make sure they are the most glorious. Such is the case with this week's episode of EarWax!Hilary and Cody dive into the cool power/punk-pop of Buzzcocks. A greatest hits album made for a band about to tour the United States...where they had very little following. Singles Going Steady is a literal timeline of the band up until that point, and showcases the band's penchant for hooks over politics. The perfect marriage of pop and punk coming together to form a banger of a compilation. Thanks for listening! Good gahd! This week the EarWax crew hits the One and covers the Hardest Working Man in Show Business. Mr. Please Please himself, James Brown!Whatchu know about betting on yourself? James Brown told his label a live record was the sauce, and when they said no, he financed it himself. The legendary Apollo, a raucous crowd, and James Brown's electrifying performance collide to create this blistering time capsule of 1962."Live at the Apollo" captures James Brown and the Famous Flames in their element. At 300 shows/year, they were razor sharp, and delivered a vicious set that stands the test of time. Thanks for listening! You want some feel good tunes? Oh, we got 'em this week. How about a little Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass!Swingin' 60s meets the coolest square sounds out there. With a lineup that included members of LA's legendary Wrecking Crew, this album bops and bounces along breezily.Herb Alpert is a dude we should all be glad is as successful as he is. His investment into music education, and his humility at yet another resurgence in popularity rank him high on our favorite artist's we've covered.Whipped Cream & Other Delights is in every garage sale, clearance bin, and attic collection ever. Pop meets pretension (and we mean that as a positive) this week on EarWax!Hilary and Cody dissect Stereolab's deceptively catchy "Dots and Loops." Beneath the pop coating lies lyrics warning about the modern age, loneliness, and wars of many iterations.Stereolab's ambition is their calling card, and it is on full display on this record. Never ones to shy away from marrying catchiness with headiness, they bask in both elements to create something both as functional and memorable as "Dots and Loops."Thanks for listening! Lock in to a groove and turn the vibes up to "Immaculate," this week the EarWax crew dives into The Roots' "Things Fall Apart."Cody and Hilary touch on the Soulquarians, and the sessions that resulted in some of the most stunning work of this era. "Things Fall Apart" was the result of two batches of sessions - one a host of Philadelphia community members and friend so the group. The next at Electric Lady Studios, with folks like Lady B, Mos Def, and J Dilla in the room."Things Fall Apart" is one of those records that you've heard, even if you haven't. Its thumbprint is all over contemporary hip-hop, soul, jazz, and R&B. With the group ready to break through, they created something that did more than break them, it locked them in as legends. Thanks for listening! Whiskey River take our minds right into one of the most consequential country records ever made! Cody and Hilary dig into "Shotgun Willie," the album that Willie considered as him "clearing his throat." With the man and the legend already firmly established with a handful of country standards under his belt, here the myth began.Nashville didn't understand him, so Willie headed to Austin to hang out with the weirdos and the hippies. There he found his place, got cozy, and proceeded to spearhead a movement that would rewrite the book about what country music is.Willie Nelson is an American legend, and "Shotgun Willie" is where we get our first glimpse of him fully in his comfort zone. Thanks for listening! *cough cough cough cough* Bow down to the Lords of Darkness and the Gods of Heavy Metal - Black Sabbath!Cody and Hilary try and fail to approach Sabbath's "Master of Reality" with some semblance of restrain, but what are we really talking about? This record crushes from front to back. From the opening riff to the finality of Into the Void, Black Sabbath's third record set the template for stoner metal, doom metal, sludge metal, (insert adjective) metal. They are gods. They are Black Sabbath. Thanks for listening!
