“Art is an irreplaceable way of understanding and expressing the world.” Dana Gioia Tune in for Food First Michigan this Sunday on WJR Radio at 9 PM to hear from Dr. Phil Knight, Gerry Brisson, president and CEO of the Gleaners Community Food Bank and two unique and inspiring leaders: Desiree Kelly, an award-winning artist and native of Detroit; and Pamela Taylor, SVP and chief communications & marketing officer at Share our Strength. The episode focuses on the work Desiree and Pamela have done to help people see and understand hunger through the eyes of a child. Desiree's work is immersive. It reflects on the narrative of her subjects by including artifacts & phrases from the subject within each piece. Her murals are powerful and multifaceted – view some of her work here https://www.nokidhungry.org/rebuild Children are HOPEFUL creatures. Desiree's art is expressive and she captures many ideas and feelings in each piece. Pamela was the person who had the idea of using art to communicate the realities associated with being food insecure. It takes more than food to fight hunger – it takes innovation, creativity, and addressing the needs at all angles. Share our Strength set out on their journey to create murals across the country: Detroit, Atlanta, Washington D.C., just outside of Los Angeles – Rialto, and New York. The artists' imagery capture and tell their story about the hope of rising out of the pandemic and the hope of ending childhood hunger. Art is the desire of mankind to express themselves. To record their reactions of their personality to the world they live in. Hunger is a reality in America – it is a problem that we as a nation, have never decided to solve completely. Phil and Gerry continue to use their voices to define the reality of hunger in Michigan, but work even more diligently to create positive solutions that will FINALLY take hunger off the table in our state. As we continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, No Kid Hungry is telling the stories of what children faced during the crisis - and the incredible people working to feed them. Working with local artists in cities across the country, NKH's Rebuilding campaign created a series of five micro-documentaries and murals in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Detroit, New York, and Washington, D.C. to showcase the stories of local children's thoughts and feelings about life during the pandemic and their hopes for the future into public works of art.In this episode of “Add Passion and Stir,” host Billy Shore and Share Our Strength's CMO, Pamela Taylor connect with Désirée Kelly, the artist that created the Rebuilding mural featured in Detroit, MI. Kelly, a Detroit-native known for her distinctive style of storytelling through portraits with a mixture of “street art” & traditional oil technique, describes the experience of sharing her community's story: “It meant so much to me being a Detroiter and representing the community...to finally have the voice to be able to speak for everyone visually.” Giving “voice” to the stories of those acutely impacted by COVID was an important consideration for the campaign. Taylor noted that NKH worked exclusively with artists of color to share the story of Black and Brown communities, “We wanted to uplift those that we knew had faced challenges in ways that had been exacerbated. Identifying artists of color to talk with the children and to hear their stories and who were part of their community...to have that connection was so important to us.” See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The first day after reopening Hawaii for tourism, a total of 8219 airline passengers arrived in Hawaii, including 3189 visitors and more counted as visiting friends, getting married. Of course, this number is not comparable to the 30,000+ average daily arrivals before COVID-19, but this is the first day and up 10-15 times the average arrival when the State was closed and required a 14-day quarantine for everyone arriving. We speak with Pamela Taylor of Sun Island Hawaii, an inbound DMC about her views on the reopening of tourism to the Aloha State. Hey there word nerds! Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Pamela Taylor. Pamela brings her love of history to the art of storytelling. An avid reader of historical fact and fiction, she finds the past offers rich sources for character, ambiance, and plot that allow readers to escape into a world totally unlike their daily lives. A history major in college, with minors in French and Spanish, she is also a classically trained musician and believes this has given her a special feel for the rhythm, dynamics, and phrasing of the written word. In addition to creating her own stories, Pamela is active in multiple writing communities. She is a member of the DFW Writers Workshop and is in her third year on the Judges Panel for the Ink & Insights Writing Contest. In 2018, she joined the team at DIY MFA where she writes the Historical Fiction column, “Past Perfect.” She is also a freelance editor and a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. She shares her home with two Corgis who frequently remind her that a dog walk is the best inspiration for that next chapter. In this episode Pamela and I discuss: Techniques to craft compelling secondary characters. How research and travel can help writers build a realistic historical world. What a style sheet is--and why it’s an important part of the editorial process. How to guide new readers into the second or third book in a series. Plus, their #1 tip for writers. Guess what side Hard Factor internet pundit Digger who lives by the motto "nothing much to say, let's ride" is on? Pamela Taylor the woman who once got fired from her government official job for calling Michelle Obama an "ape in heels," is back in the news for defrauding FEMA. It seems like Pamela Taylor took advantage of FEMA's "we can't vet everyone" during emergencies policy and collected some funds by claiming her West Virginia house flooded when it really didn't. Oh Pamela you rascal you. There is a college lacrosse player who is riding the sidelines because the NCAA can't provide a helmet big enough to fit his gargantuan dome piece. Alex Chu was able to get around this problem in high school, when he had a company cut apart and weld two of their extra large helmets together, forming one mega helmet, but the NCAA has a no limousine style helmet clause which is preventing Alex from getting on the field.Oh yeah and a ton of other shit.
