Escuchar audio

The parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15 reveals profound truths about our relationship with God and the nature of sin. The younger son's journey begins with dissatisfaction and a desire for independence, demanding his inheritance early—essentially wishing his father dead. He travels to a distant country, representing not just physical distance but relational separation from his father. This mirrors how sin operates in our lives, promising satisfaction but delivering destruction. After squandering his inheritance on foolish living, the son hits rock bottom during a famine, finding himself feeding pigs and longing to eat their food—a particularly degrading position for a Jewish man. The turning point comes when he 'comes to his senses' and decides to return home, prepared to be a servant rather than a son. His father's response is extraordinary—seeing him from a distance, running to him with compassion, and fully restoring him with the best robe, a ring, sandals, and a celebration feast. This demonstrates God's overwhelming grace that doesn't just forgive but completely restores. The elder brother's bitter reaction reveals another heart problem—self-righteousness that prevents him from celebrating his brother's return. This challenges us to examine our own hearts: Are we wandering from God? Are we trying to earn His favor like the elder brother? Or are we ready to receive His grace? God eagerly awaits our return, no matter how far we've strayed, ready to restore us fully as His beloved children. First Baptist Church depends on faithful and generous giving. Elizabeth brings years of experience as Community Education Specialist and Clinical Lactation Lead at Open Arms Perinatal Services, where she has built upon the vision of Camie Goldhammer, MSW, IBCLC (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate), who created the lactation program, by developing an IBLCE Pathway One educational and mentorship opportunity for rising lactation professionals of color.Elizabeth serves as the Indigenous Breastfeeding Community Liaison for Michigan WIC and as a board member at large for South East Michigan IBCLCs of Color. She is lactation faculty at Cedar Medicine School of Midwifery and has shared her teachings at various conferences including GOLD Lactation, with upcoming presentations for Lactivents, Alaska Native Birth Coalition, Best Starts For Kids King County, and National Indigenous and Native American WIC Coalition yet to come in 2025. A founding board member of Ogimaa and a planning team member for Indigenous Milk Medicine Week, Elizabeth weaves her clinical expertise with Indigenous knowledge systems, viewing lactation not just as infant feeding, but as a radical act of rematriation, community care, and generational sovereignty. Her work is dedicated to creating a world where Black and Indigenous families thrive, and where all babies are welcomed in communities that honor their sacredness and wisdom.Podcast Host: Katie Oshita, RN, BSN, IBCLC has over 25 years of experience working in Maternal-Infant Medicine.  While Katie sees clients locally in western WA, Katie is also a telehealth lactation consultant believing that clients anywhere in the world deserve the best care possible for their needs.  Being an expert on TOTs, Katie helps families everywhere navigate breastfeeding struggles, especially when related to tongue tie or low supply.  Katie is also passionate about finding the root cause of symptoms, using Functional Medicine practices to help client not just survive, but truly thrive. In today's episode, host Hunter guides us through day 150 of our journey, exploring Proverbs chapters 10-12 and Romans chapter 10. Together, we reflect on wisdom, integrity, generosity, and Paul's reminder that God's arms are always open to us. Hunter encourages us to embrace the love God freely offers, live a life rooted in gratitude, and share that thankfulness with those around us. Join us for a time of scripture, prayer, and reflection as we discover how God's love transforms our daily lives. Let's dive in! TODAY'S DEVOTION: Open Arms I love how Paul ends his chapter where he says, regarding Israel, All day long, I have opened my arms to them. Open arms. That's the picture Paul wants to leave us with. God's arms are open, always embracing, always drawing us in, always pursuing us, all day long. And, of course, it is entirely right for us to make the application not only for Israel, but for us, for the world. God's arms are open all day long. And, of course, that is revealed in its most perfect expression in the life of our Lord Jesus—his arms spread wide open on that cross, embracing the world. For God so loved the world that he gave himself. My prayer today is that I will live each and every day of my life fully aware, fully convinced, fully embracing the God who has embraced me. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Almighty and ever loving god, you have brought us to the light of a new morning. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your holy spirit that we may walk this day in peace. Guard our steps from temptation. Shield us from the weight of fear and shame, and lead us deeper into the joy of your presence through Jesus Christ our lord. Amen. Oh Christ, light of the nations, shine in every place where shadows dwell. Call the scattered home. Heal the wounds of division, and gather all people into the communion of your grace. May the knowledge of the lord cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Amen. And now, lord, make my hands ready for mercy. Make my eyes quick to see the hurting, my ears open to the cry of the lonely, and my feet swift to bring good news. Let me seek to bless, not to be noticed, to serve, not to be praised, to forgive, not to hold back. For in your way is life, in your mercy is healing, and in your love is the peace this world cannot give. Amen. And now as our lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Steve Perry. ABOUT STEVE PERRYOne of the most iconic voices in rock music history, Steve Perry is best known as the lead singer of the band Journey during the group's most successful period. His first Top 20 pop hit as either a performer or songwriter was the solo-written “Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin',” which became a hit for the band in 1979. In the following decade he co-wrote an unbelievable streak of classic songs with Neil Shon and Jonathan Cain, including “Any Way You Want It,” “Who's Crying Now,” “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways,” ”Send Her My Love,” and “Don't Stop Believin',” a single that's been certified five times platinum. His 1984 debut solo album Street Talk produced the classic singles “Oh Sherrie” and “Foolish Heart.” After penning additional Journey hits “Be Good to Yourself,” “Girl Can't Help It,” and “I'll be Alright Without You” he departed the band and released his second solo album, For the Love of Strange Medicine, featuring the single “You Better Wait.” After briefly reuniting with Journey and co-writing the additional hits “When You Love a Woman” and “Message of Love” in the mid-1990s, he stepped away from recording. Steve returned in 2018 with his third solo album, Traces. In 2021 he released his fourth solo record, a holiday collection called The Season, produced by Steve and Thom Flowers, and featuring contributions from multi-instrumentalist Dallas Kruse. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, whom Rolling Stone magazine named among the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” joins us to talk about exploring the great American Christmas songbook from a writer's perspective, to share some stories about his own songs, and to offer some insight into his approach to the craft.

But what if the perfect place isn't out there somewhere… what if it's right here, right now, with the Father? In Luke 15, we meet a young man who believed his best life was waiting in a distant land. But after losing it all, he found himself in a place of regret and desperation. That's where his journey back home began—and where he discovered something beautiful: the Father had never stopped watching, waiting, and loving.Discontentment can lead to destruction, but a single U-turn can change everything. In December 2015, Thomas had a food challenge with wheat and was no longer IgE-allergic to wheat. After a 3-month trial with wheat and another 3-month trial with milk (post wheat) in his diet and upper endoscopies, he has also outgrown the wheat and milk triggers for EoE and is in remission from EoE as of July 2016.
