It's the most triumphant song in Jewish history—but hidden within Az Yashir in Parshat Beshalach are mysteries waiting to be unlocked. Why is the song written in a unique structure? Why does Moshe sing in the future tense? Why does Hashem remain silent in the face of evil? And what does Mi Kamocha Ba'eilim Hashem really mean? Join Rabbi Dunner as he uncovers the depth, drama, and destiny embedded in Shirat HaYam.
The distinction between those who left Egypt and the majority who didn't highlights a great lesson that is certainly pertinent today.

In this episode with R. Joe Wolfson, we explore the nation's experience crossing the Red Sea through a series of midrashic readings that provide greater human depth and emotional contour to the written text. R. Wolfson reminds us how Chazal's dynamic interpretations often provide a bridge between the biblical account and our lived experiences. The series asks what axiomatic ideas sit at the root of Israel's national formation, without which we wouldn't be who we are? How might we adjust our current trends in the Jewish world to realign with these principles? This week's episode is dedicated in memory of Rabbi Desmond Maizels, a devoted community Rabbi in Cape Town, South Africa for over 40 years. The English word for Shabbat is Saturday — so named because the planet whose astrological influence is felt most strongly on that day is Saturn – Saturn's day. But Saturn is really the opposite of Shabbat. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. Israel is now in a situation where no viable solution is in sight. Any massive attack on Hamas central command endangers the hostages, whom the terrorists use as a human shield. Negotiating with Hamas simply perpetuates their power. What do you do in such a situation? This is the same exact predicament that Israel was in at the time of the Exodus from Egypt. See how the Torah is the blueprint for current events, especially this week.
Why did G-d redeem the Jewish people through the splitting of the sea? What is the place of song and music in Judaism? What is the meaning of Shabbat in the context of dew and wandering in the desert? All this and more in this week's Ponderings on the Parsha.

Parshat Beshalach: Israel Saw Pharaoh's Army Dead On The Shore - English and Spanish. After the Passover, the Almighty parted the Red Sea and saved us by bringing us through the waters. The Egyptian army followed after us and was destroyed when the waters returned. Why was it so important for the Israelites to see that Pharaoh's soldiers were dead? Why is it equally important for us? Recorded February 4, 2023. In this illuminating conversation with Matan Lecturer Rachel Sharansky Danziger, we discuss why Israel's crossing of the sea was in some ways more monumental for the nation than the exodus itself. This week's episode has been dedicated in memory of Cantor Jacob Rosenbaum-Yakov Tzvi Ben Dovid- by his granddaughter Dara Goldschmidt. He is remembered as being intentional about his grand parenting, instilling in his grandchildren a love for Israel as well as using his cantorial skills to teach them songs that continue to play in their mind and hearts. Our podcast series on Shemot focuses on Identity and Nationality Formation. We're going to try and address the big biblical themes of slavery, redemption, society building, and commitment to a binding code of law as well as explore together with our guests how we can anchor these big ideas in our modern lives.
