A conversation with Racheli Luftglass, a passionate Judaic educator and Tanach scholar, about finding our spiritual role models within the Torah. Mrs. Racheli Luftglass is the Principal of Judaic Studies at YULA Girls High School and a kallah teacher. Before moving to the West Coast, she taught at The Frisch School in Paramus, NJ, in the Nach Department and in the Learning Center. At the OU Women's Initiative, Mrs. Luftglass has served as a Counting Toward Sinai Scholar-in-Residence, presented shiurim and taught “Yirmiyahu's Canon for Calamity” – an interactive in-depth course at the ALIT Virtual Summer Learning Program. She also taught Sefer Nechemia to over 5,000 women worldwide for Torat Imecha Nach Yomi. Mrs. Luftglass began her career at The Moriah School in Englewood, NJ, where she taught both mainstream and enrichment Judaic Studies classes as well as secular studies in the school's Gesher Yehuda Program. Mrs. Luftglass graduated from Yeshiva University's Stern College for Women with a B.A. in music and psychology and holds an M.A. from Columbia University's Teachers College with a concentration in Education of the Gifted and of the Learning Disabled. What's the connection between Shema and Teruma? Our Sages tell us that one fiftieth is the average tithe that a farmer should give to the kohen from his grain and produce. The BBC reports that a badly burnt scroll from the Roman town of Herculaneum has been digitally "unwrapped", providing the first look inside it for 2,000 years. The document, which looks like a lump of charcoal, was charred by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79CE and is too fragile to ever be physically opened. Last year, a similar team managed to read about 5% of another Herculaneum scroll. Its subject was Greek Epicurean philosophy, which teaches that fulfilment in life can be found through the pleasure of everyday things. It struck me as ironic that an ancient scroll, which is now lifeless carbon, should glorify the pleasures of this world, whereas another ancient scroll, our holy Torah, which doesn't need electrons to be accelerated to light speed to make out its message, should teach that life's fulfilment is be found by taking the everyday things in our life and elevating them to a level of transcendence and eternity. After a series of major trades in the NBA, even fans of the benefitting teams are asking whether or not the league is trying to stack certain teams for more profit. Some players, like Dennis Schröder, went much further and stated that the trade deadline itself was “modern slavery at the end of the day.” And the facts cannot be ignored: the NBA is 70+% black and overwhelmingly owned by Jews. Half the teams are owned by wealthy Jews while the league has been run by Jews at least since the mid-1980s. Why does that matter? Because the Atlantic slave trade, dealing mostly in blacks, was also run by Jews, via banks, ships, and plantations. The Jewish encyclopedia even admits: “during the seventeenth century the sugar industry was monopolized by the Jews...in fact, the cotton-plantations in many parts of the South were wholly in the hands of the Jews, and as a consequence slavery found its advocates among them.” According to Mar Lee Raphael, professor of Judaic studies at the College of William & Mary, Jews were so influential in Dutch colonies that slave auctions scheduled to take place on Jewish holidays were often postponed. Before medical school, she taught Judaic studies, Hebrew, and Biology to 1000 now-alumni of Be'er Hagolah Institutes, in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Bruck has worked as a content specialist for Khan Academy and created over 30 MCAT preparation videos on topics in molecular biology, DNA, and genetics that have also recently been translated into foreign languages.  Her videos have been published on the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges) website, Khan Academy, and YouTube, accruing millions of views on the latter. Dr. Bruck has published research in Nature, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Bruck founded and leads the JOWMA PreMed Society that aims to advance Jewish women, from all backgrounds, in medicine. Dr. Bruck is a fierce advocate for premed students from insular and underrepresented backgrounds and strives to provide them with the resources and tools necessary to compete. She was among two out of 200 graduating MDs, PhDs, and MD/PhDs at Sinai's recent commencement to be awarded the Patricia Levinson Award for the Advancement and Inclusion of Women in Medicine. Dr. Bruck, along with her colleagues at JOWMA, is also currently in the process of constructing a cultural competency curriculum that will help healthcare professionals in New York City hospitals provide culturally sensitive medical care to Jewish populations across the entire spectrum of Orthodoxy. Dr. Bruck's experiences in education, acceptance to nearly 10 US MD programs, and service on the admissions committee of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have led her to have a highly successful track record helping premeds navigate the medical school application process.
