Rebecca Starr is the Vice President of Educational Operations and Regional Strategy for the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, where she leads the design and implementation process for educational initiatives and guides the regional hubs across the US and Canada. She lives in Southfield, Michigan and works closely with local partners and institutions throughout southeast Michigan. Rebecca is a respected educator and community organizer. She served as an assistant director at Federation's Alliance for Jewish education at the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit, where she planned and taught professional development classes for teachers in congregational and day schools. She directed and was an instructor at the award-winning Detroit branch of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. Rebecca also worked for the National Ramah Commission and Camp Ramah in Canada and expanded educational and outreach initiatives. Raised on a sheep farm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Rebecca is a proud product of the University of Michigan where she earned undergraduate degrees in education and Judaic studies as well as a master's degree in social work and a certificate in Jewish communal service. This episode was inspired by an interview with Dr. Margaret Barker on the History Valley Podcast discussing her 2023 book The Great Lady. We begin with Opinion Scholarship on the very earliest known religious images from the Stone Age, which depict a Great Goddess figure and walk through how that image was preserved in later mythology. We then bring Dr. Barker's work to bear on the Biblical figure of Ashera, how her memory was obscured over the development of Judaic monotheism and how the truth of her origin was finally revealed in the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Enjoy ;)

A Lecture Series by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik Lecture 5: Delivered January 15, 1959 The two Creation accounts reflect not a split in the text but a split in Man. Judaism has a dialectical view of Man, accepting mutually exclusive positions. Man was created alone as a unique and solitary being, but he was also created in a relationship with the Thou, in a communal existence. Man craves both, opposite modes of existence, oscillating like a pendulum between surging towards relationships with others and withdrawing into oneself. Judaism, unlike Catholicism, allows divorce, because only the kerygmatic side of Man can commit to another person, not the numinous side. We are limited in our ability to connect with other personalities due to the numinous aspect of Man. For numinous Man, the question “who am I” is unanswerable, since the I is an eternal mystery beyond rationalization, like a tune I can feel but that cannot be sung. Judaism insists that the worth of the individual is to be judged not by kerygmatic contributions to the community, but by the very fact that the person exists. The dignity of Man comes from the image of God which is found in numinous, not kerygmatic, Man. Judaism revolutionized social philosophy with this idea, upsetting the Classical view of Man. A series of halakhic laws demonstrates Judaism's “doctrine of idealization of anonymity,” meaning, the chosen-ness of the unknown, forlorn individual. One such law states that if a band of heathens demands the surrender of one person, or else the whole city will be destroyed, we do not turn over the one person, even if that person is a criminal. Another example of such a law is the obligation on whomever finds it to bury an anonymous dead body, even if the High Priest would consequently have to cancel the Yom Kipur atonement service. The uniqueness of each person is the foundation of Judaic ethics. However, the dialectical approach says that although we treat others according to their intrinsic, numinous worth, I myself must not rely on my intrinsic worth but am obligated to contribute to the community. On this holy day, Christians everywhere are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, a Jewish baby named Jesus, and the civilization those two faiths have bequeathed to the world. As we pray for peace in the year ahead, we must seek God's grace in countering those who threaten that peace.  For example, in countries like Nigeria, Syria, Communist China, Iran and North Korea, Christians are being subjected to brutal persecution.  And in each, the persecutors and their respective regimes seek to replace our Western civilization with one kind of totalitarian global order or another. The huge rightwing backlash over the President lighting Diwali candles has exposed a new phase of collapse in American society and the rule of law. What were calls to ban Islam, deport Muslims, and prevent their entry, has grown louder to now include Hindus and anyone else not worshiping one narrow fragment of Christianity. For all those who, by the Constitution, defended Christian conservatism it is a huge slap in the face. Mostly because the right has quickly become the worst version of itself and exactly what the left accused. However, it appears there are other players here too. A recent education report card shows that a third of American students are so illiterate they cannot even comprehend the basic order of events in a single passage or summary. Mix this with revamped religious zealotry and you have uneducated maniacs ready to fight a holy war over texts they can hardly even read. The theme we are seeing unfold is that the United States and Constitution are old news and that all efforts should be focused on starting armageddon by blindly following the nation-state of Israel. The words of pastor John Hagee at the Christians United for Israel conference demand Americans to accept that Jews are not merely chosen but “above all the people on the face of the earth,” including the “United States of America.” This ideology aligns with an Israeli firm's plan to target Christians across the U.S. with Christian propaganda in excess of the Scofield Bible. The firm is called Show Faith Works, and rather than it being yet another holocaust reminder, it is a Jesus and Israel reminder with mobile museums and workshops. If all other religions can be condemned, including certain sects of Christianity, by the natural Christian reaction, mixed with Judaic propaganda, to damn all but Jesus, then what remains of Christianity will be nothing but a puppet with an Israeli hand. Furthermore, the arguments being made against religions like Hinduism or the festival of Diwali are tantamount to children not understanding why they shouldn't play in the road. In week one of our series called Feasts, Pastor Collin preaches about the most notable of all Judaic feasts, the feast of Passover. Collin explains how the Sabbath helped posture the peoples' spirits for participating in the Passover celebration. Christians should observe a Sabbath today because intentional rest helps prevent us from becoming distracted from the most important spiritual matters. The Passover commemorated the night when God's Spirit took all of the firstborn of Egypt, passing over the houses whose doorframes were marked by the blood of the lamb.
