What is your defining quality? Is it your fashion style, or your sense of humor, or your excellence in what you do? If you say that you are a Christian, your defining quality should be love – a love that overlooks faults but does not tolerate sin. Your loving actions can draw people to Christ. Remember, the Christian life is a life completely lived out through Jesus, in Jesus, and for Jesus! Read Colossians 3:1 - 4:1 to see Paul's Epistle to the Colossians
Jesus Christ, by His death and resurrection, fulfilled all of God's laws so we would be set free from the power of sin and death. He defeated all the powers of this world. This means that we don't have to do anything else after we have invited Him to be our Lord and Savior. We don't have to pray to angels or spirits; we don't have to follow superstitious customs as a back-up to our prayers; we don't have to walk barefoot behind any carved image or touch the carved image to be blessed. Get to know Jesus and His will through the Bible, so you won't be deceived by false teachings. Indeed, the law said, “You shall love the Lord your God,” but the law cannot give me such love, nor can it take my hand to grasp on to Christ.
What common cultural practices do you do? Do you say “good luck” to a friend about to face something difficult? Do you have “fortune plants” or golden frog figurines in the house so that you will have a prosperous life? Do you choose “good” dates to get married? If we say that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, we don't need to add anything to His sacrifice on the cross for our sins. We do not need to live in fear and submit to superstitious practices because Jesus is the Lord of creation and redemption. As Gentile converts flood into the fledgling Christian church, questions about adherence to the Law of Moses threaten to become points of division and contention. Peter, Paul, and other leaders gather in Jerusalem to formulate a response, resulting in two very different accounts — one in Acts, the other in Paul's Epistle to the Galatians.
In part one of this series, Pastor Josh shares some of the historical context of Paul's Epistle to the Colossians. He then leads us through chapter one which highlights the mystery: Christ in us, the hope of glory.
the conclusion of the first section of Paul's Epistle to the Romans contains the just verdict against humanity, based on undeniable evidence and grounded on God's holy standard.

Consider passivity and activity. There is not anything inactive about the Christian life. In The Argument of St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians we read, "When I have this righteousness within me, I descend from heaven like the rain that makes the earth fertile. That is, I come forth into another kingdom, and I perform good works whenever the opportunity arises.” Consider the passive relationship seeming to call us to do something. How do we distinguish the Gospel from something that is not the Gospel? Consider the example of Paul in Galatia. Explore Galatians 1:6-9. Paul continues in Galatians 2:12-14 concerning Gentile believers and circumcision. We also read in Galatians 5:3-4, “I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.” Consider what Paul states in Galatians 6:15-16. Explore Romans 10:6-7, 13. Romans 10:9 states, “… because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” For Paul, believing with our heart and confessing with our mouth in the context of Romans 10 and is the form that faith takes. Romans 10:17 states, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Faith is the concrete form of our being saved. What is Abraham's faith in Romans 4? For Paul, there is no human contribution to salvation. Consider that justification can teach us the grammar of the Gospel. Consider the Ordo Salutis.
Continue to explore Luther’s The Argument St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. In his opening sentence he states, “This is our theology, by which we teach a precise distinction between these two kinds of righteousness, the active and the passive . . . “ The grounds for God's loving, saving relationship with us is Jesus Christ which God has given as a gift. What theology actually is, is ministry. Just saying it means we have not done theology yet. For Luther, theology is the practical art of making distinctions in difficult life moments. For Luther, we can almost never be our own minister or our own preacher. Consider the view of preaching the gospel to ourselves. Paul tells us the gospel comes as an external word. In Romans 10:17 we read, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” We also read in Galatians 3:1-2, “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?”
Explore Luther’s The Argument St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians. Luther uses the terms active and passive righteousness and calls passive righteousness true Christian righteousness. Luther describes a sinner as incurvatus in se or "curved in on the self". Consider the nature of the two relationships. What is the difference between a person being saved by Jesus and a person not being saved by Jesus? The difference is a kind of receiving. In Galatians 2:16 we read, “. . . yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ . . .” The form passive righteousness takes is faith while active righteousness takes the form of love. What actually justifies us is the decisive difference maker of the love we have for God and others. Luther also states, "Then do we do nothing and work nothing in order to obtain this righteousness? I reply: Nothing at all.”
Explore the topic of sin and salvation through The Argument St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians by Luther. Consider justification. When Luther talks about who Jesus Christ is as the Savior of sinners it is always some encounter with Paul in justification. In Romans 1:17 we read, “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Explore Romans 1:16-17, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith . . .” And in Habakkuk 2:4 we read, “. . . but the righteous shall live by his faith." Galatians 2:16 tells us, “... yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. . .” Luther relates that when he found out the Law was one thing and the Gospel was another, he broke through and was free.

"...praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication..." Eph 6: 18 Paul has given us this marvelous list of the spiritual resources of the Christian: Truth, Righteousness, and the Gospel; Faith, Assurance of Salvation and the Word of God. "...the shield of faith...the helmet of salvation...the sword of the Spirit." Eph 6: 16-17 You have an enemy, and he wants to see you fall! He wants to knock out your faith; negate your confdence, destroy your peace of mind, nullify the work of Christ in your life, mess up your example, silence your witness and paralyze your walk. So...yes!...absolutely! You'd better be 'armed'! "Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground..." Eph 6: 13 Ask any battle-toughened general: "what is the most powerful, most effective military strategy of all?" He will answer with a single word: surprise. Oh, yes. Many a crushing defeat has come upon those who were taken by surprise. That's why we must be ready, dear ones! It's time to armor up. "Humanity can be divided into two: master and slave," writes Aristotle (Politics). Such was the brutal state of our world when the Gospel first arrived! "...a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife..." Eph 5: 31 How many times have we heard someone say that "marriage is only a piece of paper"? Sadly, people don't know any better, but that is one of the most foolish statements a person can make! We're talking about one of the holiest things God ever created, and it has nothing to do with "a piece of paper". "Look carefully then, how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise." Eph 5: 15 It's not easy, is it?--this thing called "the Christian walk"? The path is narrow, the way is steep, hazards abound and deadly detours beckon. So, if you are are wise, you will definitely watch your step. Let's see what Scripture has to say on that subject. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians represents a true theological high point of the New Testament, as the assures both Jew and Gentile Christians of their special and treasured place in the New Covenant - in Christ. Ed Anton provides some background before Hampton Roads Church begins an in depth study of the Epistle.
"For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord." Eph 5: 8 The Epistle to the Ephesians offers one great, long exhortation: "Do not live like the rest of this world." Paul has been saying it since the beginning of chapter 4, and this morning, here in chapter 5, he's still saying it! You must be different, Christian! As different as night and day. "Become, now, imitators of God..." Eph 5:1 This morning we confront the command to be "imitators of God". Of all the commands of God that have been given us, this surely is the most extreme! And yet, it is a command that is spoken to every Christian. It is spoken to you! So, let's see what it entails... The most natural thing in the world is a longing to be 'accepted' and 'included'. As children, we all longed for that. "Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves and blown here and there by every wind of doctrine." Eph 4: 14 Last week Paul was urging us on toward unity with one another: toward this remarkable stature of "the perfect man" (vs 13). He was talking about a level of maturity that "measures up" to a likeness of Christ. Today he goes on to mention the very opposite of maturity: infancy and the perils of it. Let's take a look... "A jailer is another kind of captive..." wrote the tormented poet Nerval. It is not real clear what he meant by that, but one thing is certain: our jailer is now a captive, and all of his minions with him. Jesus conquered them at the Cross! He has taken them into captivity! And all because He loves you. "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all..." Eph 4: 5-6 There's a synonym for "division" and "disunity" in an army: it's called "defeat". Of all the things required for a victory in battle, nothing is more important than unity! Jesus spoke of this: "No house divided against itself will stand," He said (Mt 12:25). This morning, let's focus on our church's greatest need. "...walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you were called..." Eph 4: 1 The Book of Ephesians splits right down the middle. The first three chapters are full of theology: the deep theological mysteries behind the love of God and His saving plan for us. But now, here with chapter 4, it is time to put it all into practice. And the first thing we must do is "walk worthy". Message by Pastor Rod Schorr, Calvary Chapel Old Towne, Orange, CA. From his series on Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians: Good News for the Rebel Planet
"...to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ..." Eph 3:18 What a narrow measure is the span of a human life: a mere hyphen between two dates, carved on a slab of stone. Is there any hope at all for us? Oh, yes! There is Someone who loves you, with a love so great it cannot even be measured. This morning's task is to measure it anyway. Let's get started... "He has broken down in His fles the dividing wall of hostility..." Eph 2:14 "Something there is that doesn't love a wall," writes Robert Frost in one of his poems, "that wants it down." True! And no one hated a wall more than Jesus! In fact, He gave His life to make sure it came down! We're talking about the "wall" that was separating you from your God and blocking your way to life everlasting. The mystery of Christ, the key to the Christian life, is unpacked in four brief chapters in St. Paul's Epistle to the Colossians. There are many parallels between Ephesians and Colossians, which suggests they may have been written close to the same time. Paul was writing for a particular reason - he had received word that they were threatened by certain heretical ideas. Though he had no founded the church himself, he had close ties to Epaphras and was concerned with the wellbeing of the church there and its members. We will be taking on the first 23 verses of the first chapter, and consider this section in five basic parts. The initial salutation, the thanksgiving section, an apostolic prayer, and a great poetic hymn about the person of Jesus Christ. Finally, Paul concludes with a statement on our peace and reconciliation with God through Christ.
"...according to the riches of His grace which He lavished upon us..." Eph 1: 7-8 "How destitute is he whose gold is firm..." writes Emily Dickinson. That certainly describes our world today. How about you? Is your gold 'firm'? Or is it the lasting, heavenly kind? If so, then, you are rich indeed! That's what our Scripture is pointing out this morning. The very first message an unbeliever gets, when he truly reads his Bible, is a bleak one: "I'm on the wrong side! I've joined the rebel faction." Oh, yes, and the rebellion is going to be crushed! But here's the incredible news of the Gospel: Jesus laid down His life for the rebels! God loves you! That's wonderful news for you! That's wonderful news for the whole rebel planet! "The only natural law in this world is need," someone once observed. This world is full of needy creatures, and the neediest of them all, by far, is Man! In this four-part lecture series, Father Josiah presents an exposition of St. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians. Of all St. Paul's letters in the New Testament, Philippians is the most personal. The Great Apostle had a very dear relationship with this local church, and the theme of Christian joy radiates in each of the four chapters. This is deeply intriguing since St. Paul wrote this joyful letter of thanksgiving while he was in prison! In this sacred letter is revealed the world-conquering mystery of Christian faith. Here St. Paul unveils the orientation of his entire life when he says, "For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Each of the chapters contains some of the most sublime teachings of the Gospel, including in chapter 2 the most detailed apostolic teaching on the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ found in the entire New Testament. These lectures are presented with the sincere hope that a more thorough study of this Pauline letter will fill believers with the joy which St. Paul models and of which he speaks.
There is one thing our generation desperately needs and, sadly, has nothing of: the fear of God. How perilous to be without it! Nations and peoples that do not have it, perish! It's just that simple! Pastor Albert Lee begins his series on Paul's Epistle to the Galatians
http://store.catholicism.org/commentary-on-saint-pauls-epistle-to-the-romans-mp3.html By Brother Francis Maluf Saint Paul's apostolic career among the Gentiles can be seen as part of the fulfillment of Our Lord's prophecy to the unbelieving Jews: "The Kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof". For this reason the Church has rightly given Saint Paul's Epistle to the Romans the pride of place. Brother Francis reduces some of the most difficult passages in this theological epistle to simple and understandable articles of faith. His exposition of unmerited grace and the necessity of good works is most illuminating.
In this lesson, Carson looks at the person, history, and theology of one of the greatest saints in the 2,000 year history of the Catholic Church: St. Paul the Apostle. In this episode, we read from the writing of a presbyter, a Catholic priest, who wrote around 160 A.D. In it, we discover a description of what St. Paul looked like. We read from Eusebius of Caesarea's "Church History," wherein he describes the means by which St. Paul was martyred under the persecution of the Roman emperor Nero. Before his monumental conversion to Christianity, Paul was a zealous persecutor of the Catholic Church. Why? What did he care if other Jews embraced the Christian Faith.. of what concern was that to him? Only by looking at the nature of first century Judaism and the sect of Judaism that Paul embraced - Pharisaism - we can understand why Paul was concerned about whether or not and how other Jews kept the Mosaic Law. On his way to persecute the Church in Damascus, Paul met the risen Jesus face to face, and that experience changed his life forever. Paul came to discover that his view of the Mosaic Law, his interpretation, was askew. This supernatural event turned one of the most formidable foes of the early Christians into their most powerful advocate. Finally, in this episode, we look closely at St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans and discover a look at a new way of reading this famous text. This advance in Biblical studies is known in scholarly circles as The New Perspective. Join us as we take upon ourselves the mind of first century Judaism and read Paul's words afresh.
