The Blood Origins podcast is a thought-provoking and informative platform that delves into the complex world of hunting and conservation. Hosted by Robbie Kroger, this podcast features a diverse range of guests with varying perspectives on hunting, allowing for open and honest discussions on the topic. The show aims to challenge preconceived notions about hunting while fostering understanding and appreciation for its role in conservation efforts.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is its commitment to presenting different viewpoints on hunting. Kroger ensures that guests representing opposing sides of the debate are given equal opportunity to share their thoughts and engage in meaningful conversations. This balanced approach allows listeners to gain a well-rounded understanding of the topic, encouraging critical thinking and consideration of various perspectives.
Additionally, the podcast stands out for its high level of engagement with difficult topics. Kroger fearlessly tackles controversial subjects surrounding hunting, pushing beyond surface-level discussions to address deeper issues like ethics, sustainability, and cultural significance. By doing so, he creates a space for nuanced conversations that prompt reflection and introspection among both hunters and non-hunters alike.
While The Blood Origins podcast provides valuable insights into the world of hunting, one potential drawback is its limited sound quality. Some episodes may suffer from poor audio production, which can be distracting or hinder overall enjoyment of the content. Improving the technical aspects of the podcast would greatly enhance the listening experience and ensure greater accessibility for a wider audience.
In conclusion, The Blood Origins podcast is a commendable platform that fosters open dialogue and critical thinking surrounding hunting and conservation issues. Through thought-provoking conversations with experts from all sides of the debate, host Robbie Kroger encourages listeners to reexamine their beliefs and deepen their understanding of these complex topics. While there may be room for improvement in terms of sound quality, this podcast remains an invaluable resource for those seeking deeper insights into hunting's role in our world today.

In one of our most accent-ridden podcasts ever, Robbie interviews three wildfowlers (Dave Upton, William Wykes, and Gerald Carlile) from all over the United Kingdom about their exploits in the marsh, the community and culture around “wildfowling” in the UK and the traditions they share. If you thought you heard some hectic accents before on the podcast - just wait till you listen to this one. However the topics that are covered in this podcast are the root of hunting worldwide, but focused on wildfowling (aka duck hunting in America). The individuals and Robbie explore the tradition, heritage, and elements that make wildfowling what it is, they even explore punt-gunning, though banned in the US, is still something you can do in the UK. Importantly the entire group talks about how self-regulating the waterfowling / wildfowling community is and why they self-regulate themselves. This is a must listen to podcast! Robbie and the team were recently in England to undertake a documentary around the heritage and story around wildfowling - the UK's version of duck hunting (but don't tell them thats what they do). Mega charismatic fauna create a deep seated emotional response as it pertains their management - ie wolves, bears, and in Africa, elephants. Elephants are one of Africa's most debated conservation challenges, Robbie sits down with Dr. Sam Ferreira, large mammal ecologist for South African National Parks, unpacking the complex reality of elephant management in Kruger National Park. Drawing on decades of research, field experience, and real-time data, Ferreira challenges the common assumption that more elephants automatically mean more ecological damage, instead revealing how elephant behavior, resource distribution, and “ice cream aisle” habitat preferences drive localized impact. From historical human influence and shifting landscapes of fear to modern conservation constraints and adaptive management strategies, this conversation explores why managing elephants isn't about hitting a magic number but understanding the dynamic systems they shape. Wild Horses across the range in the West are likely the most significant wildlife issue facing wildlife and habitat across the western range. Art Lawson, Director of Shoshone and Arapaho Fish and Game in Wyoming shares the amazing efforts they've put in removing feral horses in the Wind River Valley. The council, the community and the team, facing a lack of funding, rounded up almost 7,800 horses and restored acres of habitat in the process, showing what happens when you manage problem species accordingly. While Ashlee is on Spring Break down in Florida, Robbie grabs Charles Whitwam from Howl for Wildlife to sub-in. Charles and Robbie naturally discuss the 4 step-children of the anti-use, anti-hunting community right now - which is California, Washington State, Colorado, and Oregon. Robbie and Charles give an update to where things stand with Catalina Island and the possible deer eradication by the Catalina Island Conservancy, they discuss the insanity that ensued from the Colorado Parks and Willdife Commission meeting about the fur ban, talk about the nonsensicalness of Oregon's IP28 anti-everything animal petition, and much more. Robbie first stumbled across Hunters for Hope on Facebook. Two individuals that were on a mission, to feed venison to the needy and hungry in Christchurch in New Zealand. their story went so viral that a coffee company in South Carolina, the legends at Quail Covey Coffee, made a special coffee blend to raise money for them. Well Adam and Steve of Hunters 4 Hope in New Zealand are back, and connect with Robbie to give an update on the incredible work they're doing and just how much they've been able to ramp up the amount of venison they're processing and distributing in the south end of NZ. At the very end of the podcast Robbie gives Adam and Steve a special surprise you'll need to tune in to hear! Do you have questions we can answer? Robbie is joined by Carel Verhoef, a photo tourism operator in the Serengeti area of Tanzania. After learning to love the world of protecting humans from human-wildlife conflict, Carel came up with a groundbreaking strategy to use thermal imaging drones to push elephants away from human habitation and crops. While not a hunter, his pragmatism is infectious and he puts some nuggets of wisdom out there on the reality of what is happening on the ground in Tanzania. Robbie stubled across Carel on LinkedIn where he posts incredible thermal drone videos of his team and their work in Tanzania. Leon Kachelhoffer, the current operator in the NG13 elephant hunting block in northern Botswana joins Robbie to talk about what it's like to operate in this hotspot. This episode was purposefully created so that we can unpack everything that has happened in the NG13 hunting block of Botswana. It has been a block that has made headlines news from 2022 when a big 100 pound elephant was taken there - ever since there has been a lo of anti hunting rhetoric, alongside issues of corruption, and more. This podcast is one of those that came out of left field. A connection from a past podcast guest, and an invitation to podcast about an industry that if you looked at from the outside looking in, in a place like Scotland, one may think it's an industry that is not compatible with wildlife and sustainable use conservation. Stefan Rijnbeek, an expert on forestry initiatives and how they're tied intimately to conservation efforts in the UK, spends the better part of an hour schooling Robbie on the complexities of forestry in the UK and Scotland in particular. As a reminder the opinions of Stefan in this podcast are his own, they are not born from hard evidence, nor represent the stance, policy, or opinions of his employer. Sam Lawry, a self-professed “sandhill crane” (that is, someone who migrates from Montana to Arizona and back annually, rather than a traditional “snowbird”), has been in the wildlife conservation field for 43 years, with the vast majority of that time spent on the wildlife law enforcement side of conservation. Sam regales Robbie with stories around wildlife law enforcement and the work that he has been involved with. An incredible conversation with a man who has been in the proverbial trenches of wildlife conservation for many decades. Arguably the biggest fight (and let's be honest there are a lot of fights) within the hunting community is the use of euphemistic terms to potentially lessen the impacts of words. The biggest euphemism utilized is using harvest vs. kill. Is it truly a cop-out? Should we be changing our language depending on the audience we are talking to? Are we apologizing for being hunters and what we do when we change terms? Charles Whitwam from HOWL for Wildlife, James Nash from the 6 Ranch Podcast, and Robbie get together on this podcast to have a very frank and open discussion about this. This is definitely a thought provoking podcast that will make you think and outlines the perspectives on both sides of this eternal debate. Robbie and Ashlee kick off legislative sessions across the country with a few highlights from Idaho (4 technology law restrictions proposed), Wisconsin (sandhill crane hunting season up for a vote), and Colorado (facing a shutdown of their wolf program by the feds), as well as the nomination of Steve Pearce to lead the Bureau of Land Management and a crazy situation with NG13 in Botswana involving elephants and other big game hunting. Whenever Robbie is in Australia, he likely eats his bodyweight in pies (yes, those fluffy pastry things). One pie maker that Robbie was eager to meet was the incredible Jo Barrett. Jo Barrett, master chef, master pie maker, now a hunter herself, and one of the partners at Discover Wild Foods, who are taking wild venison and crafting it into incredible dishes—well, in Jo's case, incredible pies. It was by pure coincidence that Robbie was standing in line for a wild pie and saw Jo—and as is the common phenomenon around social media—they both met for the first time and managed to connect. Robbie convinced her to jump on a podcast in between pies being cooked at the Wild Deer Expo in Victoria, Australia. In today's society, we need all the voices we can get to champion hunting and the sustainable use of wildlife. There is no greater mechanism to do that than influencers, especially those who have used the sustainable use of wildlife for survival. Australian influencer Karla Pound became well known for her escapades on the show Alone. She joined Robbie from the floor of the Wild Deer Expo in Victoria, Australia, back in October. Robbie went into the interview cold, knowing nothing about Karla, and peels back the layers of the onion to get to the bottom of her life as a survivalist, hunter, and more. Ashlee and Robbie sit down with newly appointed Director of Arkansas Game and Fish and former President and Chairman of the Board for Ducks Unlimited, Doug Schoenrock, to discuss why he made the decision to come out of retirement after an illustrious career in the private sector to become the head of a government wildlife agency. Ashlee, Robbie, and Doug cover the two recent bear attacks in Arkansas, the massive die-offs in both state and federal hatcheries near the Norfolk and White Rivers and the emergency regulations for anglers that followed, his personal hunting history, and the vision he has for the future of AGFC.
