Leland Brown is a PhD student who has worked for some time on the idea of lead-free ammunition. Leland and Robbie cover the start of the lead-free controversy, addressing myths about lead-free ammunition (from efficacy, ballistics, terminal efficient, etc) and sets the tone for Leland's PhD research. There is always significant controversy when one starts talking about lead free ammunition - specifically as it pertains to reducing hunting opportunities and it always comes down to availability and efficacy. Robbie and Leland talk about it all. Get to know the guest: https://www.trcp.org/2025/03/27/in-the-arena-leland-brown/ Do you have questions we can answer? Robbie sits down with some of the board members of the newly birthed North American Pronghorn Foundation, one of the newest nonprofits in the conservation space! America is the bastion of species-specific foundations like this that dive deep into the conservation of one or another much loved and iconic species from Ducks Unlimited to NWTF to all the deer foundations and beyond - but with 14 states with pronghorn populations and only two with positive increases in those populations - this group couldn't have come at a more important time. Chris Comer, the Director of Conservation for Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF), joins Robbie on today's podcast to discuss driving the conservation program landscape forward for SCIF, especially SCIF's important niche of carnivore surveys and population estimates. From Texas mountain lions to leopards in Botswana and beyond. It's exciting to see SCIF, and the direction of Dr. Comer, Dr. Davidson and others really starting to look at where the research gaps are currently in the carnivore space across the world and start plugging them to enhance and improve sustainable use. Robbie and Paul first met each other almost 3 years ago when Robbie attended his first Zimbabwe Professional Guides Association meeting in Victoria Falls. At that meeting Robbie was introduced to Paul's extensive knowledge about all things history, anthropology, and natural sciences. Paul is an absolute wealth of knowledge. Paul Hubbard lives in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and is a guide, anthropologist, archaeologist, and general “knower of all things” as it relates to the history of hunting and hunting culture in Zimbabwe. Today, he and Robbie cover history from Stone Age to Iron Age hunters in Southern Africa in the first of what will be a long running series of podcasts we have here at Blood Origins! Is hunting good for wildlife and conservation? As hunters, we attempt to convey the story of how hunters contribute to conservation. We identify as conservationists and espound on our contributions to wildlife management efforts. These actions and connections are often unseen or not understood. It's a complex story to tell, and so I invited Robbie Kroger of Blood Origins to help better understand how to convey the role of hunting in wildlife management and conservation to those outside our community. Robbie is a master at connecting the dots between hunting, wildlife value, and habitat preservation in his storytelling. He has elevated the importance of hunting as a conservation and wildlife management tool. He shares the journey of Blood Origins, a project aimed at communicating the heart of a hunter and dispelling misconceptions about hunting. He also addresses the privilege of hunting and the role of sharing the harvest with others. The conversation explores the value of hunting and its connection to nature, the importance of supporting a positive message about hunting, the challenges faced by indigenous communities in accessing land for hunting, the ownership of First Nations territories, the impact of hunting bans on wildlife, and a dream hunting opportunity in British Columbia. EatWild Podcast takeaways Hunting plays a crucial role in conservation and wildlife management. Connecting the dots between hunting, wildlife value, and habitat preservation is essential. Not everyone is meant to hunt, but those who do should prioritize sharing the harvest. Hunting for food and valuing wildlife are powerful arguments in favour of hunting. Hunting is a primal and deeply ingrained activity for many individuals, providing a sense of connection to nature and fulfilling innate desires. When discussing hunting with others, it is essential to use language that supports a positive message and highlights the benefits of hunting, such as wildlife conservation and habitat protection. Indigenous communities in Canada and other post-colonial nations are reclaiming their connection to land and requesting that resident hunters respect their traditional territories. The ownership of First Nations territories in Canada is complex, with some lands owned by the Crown and others being repatriated to indigenous communities. Hunting bans can have unintended consequences, including the loss of value for wildlife and the need for alternative sources of revenue for local communities. A dream hunting opportunity in British Columbia is coastal black bear hunting, which offers a unique experience in a beautiful setting. Supporting organizations like Blood Origins Canada can help promote a positive image of hunting and support conservation efforts. Individuals can support Blood Origins Canada through the Conservation Club, which offers various membership levels and monthly giveaways. There is potential for collaboration between Blood Origins and the EatWild Podcast to create content and events that promote hunting and conservation. The iHunter App supports the Eatwild Podcast and other programs. It is an essential tool for making you more comfortable in the woods. The app's mapping layers, navigation tools, and hunting regulations are packed into it to give you the information you need on your next adventure. Robbie met Fiona Tande randomly in South Africa on what can only be described as a “crazy journey” tied to the Panyame Cheetah Conservation Project. During that connection Robbie and Fiona had a really solid conversation in the middle of the bush in which Fiona questioned Robbie about hunting. The result of that conversation was Fiona stating - "I had no idea hunters spoke or thought that way." That led to Robbie and Fiona connecting later, on this podcast. As you will see in this podcast - it quickly gets turned on its head with Fiona inquistively questioning Robbie about all things hunting - and will serve as an exceptional educational podcast to others about how to talk and answer someone who is not familiar with hunting, about hunting. Robbie travelled to India earlier this year to get an on-the ground perspective of human wildlife conflict in the very remotest and rural places in India. At the second location that they travelled to a subject matter expert, Dr. HS Pabla, joined Robbie and the team. Dr. Pabla was the Chief Wildlife Warden of Mardra Pradesh, an extremely prestigious position, and retired from the Indian Forest Service in 2012. So when Robbie got the opportunity to sit down with Dr Pabla, he took it. This podcast was filmed and recorded in a very small hotel room in a remote hotel in rural India. The discussion with Dr. Pabla unravels the Wildlife Protection Act of India and how the country has made moves in recent years toward a more sensible model of conservation, driven by unprecedented wildlife conflicts between the citizens of the country and wildlife; from herbivores destroying crops to tigers and leopards prowling cities and towns and eating citizens. It's truly an eye opening podcast from an area of the world that most people know very little about. While searching the interweb for Rhino documentaries, Robbie came across a TED talk by a professor from the Uiversity of Arkansas Monticello called Elena Rubino talking about Rhinos. He was immediately intrigued as its not a place that one thinks discussions around Rhino Conservation and Trade come from. Robbie reached out, and it turns out the Elena did her Ph.D. work on the perceptions of Trophy Hunting, and naturally that was something he wanted to learn about. Robbie is joined today by Dr. Elena Rubino, a professor at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, to talk about a survey she undertook to understand perceptions around trophy hunting. As you will find out the research is fascinating and really provides some science to what society thinks about hunting writ large. Robbie and Ashlee get into it in this Roundup episode - diving first into some good news about our ongoing Cheetah conservation project, expansion of hunting and fishing on National Wildlife Refuges, then transitioning into a fiery debate about the ecological importance of donuts and their role in black bear management. Robbie and Ashlee come at the issue from two completely different, yet congruently valid perspectives - Ashlee questions the use of bait for black bear hunting from an ethical perspective, while Robbie defends the use of bait from a scientific and management perspective. Rob McCanna recently took over the hot seat at the DSC organization and to say he hit the ground the running and was instantly met with an array of challenges would be under statement. I was intrigued about Rob's leadership qualities when I listened to a podcast he did with Robbie Kroger from Blood Origins. I appreciated his acceptance of the negatives and his willingness to make things right and drive the organization forward. But I wanted to find out more about the man himself, and I enjoyed hearing from Rob about his earlier days hunting and his love for the outdoors. I hope you enjoy this episode, and if you did then please take 2 minutes to leave a review and rating. Jono
The Honorable Robert Borsak is a repeat guest on the Blood Origins podcast. He is a member of the upper house of the New South Wales Government in Australia and the leader of the Shooters, Fishers, and Farmers Party there. Robbie wanted to have a conversation with Robert on the heels of the Great Australian Pig Hunt, in which the data showcased how great a job hunters were doing both economically and ecologically for the Australian environment and economy. The two discuss hunting policy in NSW from wild (read: feral) horses to wombats and beyond. Willy Pabst is an outspoken German who fell under Africa's spell as a young man and decided he needed to make it a part of him. Over the intervening years, he found a property called Sango in the Save Valley in Zimbabwe. He eventually purchased the property, which has formed one of the most important, iconic examples of hunter-led conservation in the world. Willy joins the Our Voice series to discuss what we do in this era where we actually have TOO MANY elephants and too little habitat. Willie discusses his view from the front lines of that debate - and gives us his unvarnished opinion. Ben “The Vegan Farmer” Hudson and Robbie were introduced to each other when Robbie was tagged into one of his posts where he noted "hunting is not conservation". Naturally, I was curious to this viewpoint and DM'ed Ben and invited Ben to the Blood Origins podcast. I love to have conversations with folks that have different points of view around hunting and have open, articulate and intelligent conversation around it. What we think you'll find is that Ben is a very astute and intellectual person who's thought deeply about his morality and ethics. What follows is a straightforward conversation on hunting, animal agriculture, conservation, and beyond. Very appreciative of Ben joining us on the podcast and the great conversation that ensued. At the same time that Robbie met Ralph and Vicki, he was introduced to RJ and Aubrey. RJ and Aubrey Cianciarulo are the son and daughter-in-law of Ralph and Vicki (if you haven't listened to their episode, go listen to episode 556 which dropped earlier this week). As the ‘new faces' coming in behind their stalwart parents to pick up the torch, Robbie talks to them about the state of the industry, and what are they seeing, or not seeing. Given that Rj and Aubrey are at the beginning of this journey into the industry, Robbie shares his advice on how thinking, more than anything else, will save hunting. Robbie and Ralph and Vicki have been in each others social circles for quite sometime, but it wasn't until the DSC Convention earlier this year that they connected and really got to chatting. It's safe to say Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo are part of the “old guard” of hunting. They started their first TV show, ‘Archer's Choice' in 1985 - almost 40 years ago - and join Robbie's podcast today to talk about the evolution they've seen in the conversation around hunting in the 40 years since hitting the air for the first time. This conversation is a fascinating conversation about how things have changed and at times some brutal honesty about things that are a part of the industry today. Robbie was fortunate to cross paths with Paul during the initiation of our Panyame Cheetah Conservation project. When Robbie first met Paul - he noted that Paul's name was super familiar to him, and it turns out that Robbie had heard of Paul, and more specifically his PhD work. Paul Booyens, a Wildlife Reserve Manager, did his thesis on the rewilding of lions. Not rewilding of any lions, but rather the rewildling of Captive Bred Lions, aka CBL lions. Lions that essentially had been raised in captivity, have never killed any prey, and were placed in reproductive scenarios in Bomas. CBL is controversial enough - but Paul decides to add a whole new level to it, by trying to rewild CBL lions. Is that even possible? Paul joins Robbie on this podcast to talk about one of the most controversial subjects in South African conservation. CAN a captive bred lion who has been fed carcasses its entire life rediscover its felid nature - learn to hunt for itself, interact with other lions, and be truly “wild”? Salim Khan, a Pakistani native who has been hunting in the country for 53 of his 57 years of life, is an outfitter who has been involved in the hunting game for decades. He also has an interest in replicating wildlife management models from places like South Africa into Pakistan and reintroducing and rehabilitating native wildlife such as axis deer, black buck, nilgai, you name it. Robbie was introduced to Salim at this year's Wild Sheep Show through Adam Olivas and Arqos Hunting and decided right then and there to record a podcast with him while they were both on the Wild Sheep Show convention floor. Ryan Darby - who the average listener wouldn't know from a bar of soap - sits down to explore with Robbie the intersection of mental health and hunting. Ryan Darby is the regional officer at The British Association for Shooting and Conservation. In this incredibly brave interview, Ryan Darby opens up to say, “I am not okay” and in doing so hopefully gives hope and resiliency to others who may be out there in the same place in the hunting community. Robbie shares a similar experience in this incredibly open conversation about mental health. If you are struggling, it is important to reach out to someone and know that you are not alone. In this week's roundup while Robbie is off galavanting again, Ashlee is joined by Fred Bird of the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation. And luckily, in addition to being CSF's Senior Manager of Eastern States, Fred also serves as the host of CSF's own Sportsmen's Voice podcast - because when a catastrophic power and internet failure hits Ashlee's office mid-recording, Fred is able to step in and finish the episode! Ashlee and Fred discuss legislative news around the country, including the implications of controversial bills like Alabama's House Bill 509, the significance of food sovereignty legislation such as the statute passed in Maine, legal challenges in Pennsylvania regarding the Open Fields doctrine and wildlife management's ability to enter private land vs the rights of hunting clubs, the legal implications surrounding wildlife & property surveillance, recent legislative updates on the ND Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) bills, and the outline of the plan for the return of bear hunting in Florida. Robbie and the Slots Boys are back with more South African shenanigans that we all love from their latest road trip. From the back of the trusty old rig traveling around South Africa, the boys cover the project they're sending to the nines in honor of a friend, what they're up to in Africa, and so much more. This trip the boys have had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Do you have questions we can answer? Sam “The Trapman” Gibson is a lifelong hunter and trapper out of New Zealand. After leaving a long career with the department of environmental conservation in 2020 due to being disparaged with how they were doing things, he started a project called Eastern Whio Link a hunter-led conservation project that looks to protect native birds (specifically kiwi) and whio (a rare native duck). He discussed both with Robbie in depth in today's episode. The Eastern Whio Link is a project that Blood Origins, through funding by Bergara has invested in. It's a phenomenal investment from people into ensuring ecosystem health and native New Zealand fauna are looked after. In this follow-up episode to Part 1 (if you didn't listen to Part 1 - go back and listen to it) - Robbie wanted to talk to someone else that has been on the ground in this part of the world, to hear an eye-witness account of what is happening. Robbie is joined by Ed Stoddard, a journalist out of South Africa for the Daily Maverick, to follow up on Mike Labuschagne's episode about Kasungu National Park in Malawi. Ed, in this episode, recounts his personal invitation from Mike to come see the travesty happening on the Zambian side of the border. Ed witnessed first hand the effect of these elephants, which was the largest translocation of elephants ever attempted, and the impact it is having on the people living next to the park on the Zambian and Malawi sides. There is big news coming out of the Zambian - Malawi Border this past week. A relocation of 263 elephants into Kasungu National Park has led to a human rights travesty. This travesty has now been picked up by a law firm in the United Kingdom that is about to file a class action lawsuit against IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) - arguably one of, if not the, largest NGO in the world. In this longer-than-normal episode, Robbie kicks off our series on Kasungu in Zambia with someone who has been on the ground in the area for 20+ years. Mike Labuschagne has been working in the Kasungu area for two decades, and at one point was even employed by IFAW. He is the force behind exposing the human rights travesty, and has an important story to tell on human wildlife conflict, investment, and sets the stage for one of the most important, if underreported, wildlife conflicts in the world right now. After exchanging a photo, Robbie invited him on for this episode, where the two exchange stories about the man, Leo Kroger, and the “Wild impression” he left on Barry Cromhout in 1998. There have been significant rumors and discussions about DSC's future since the Atlanta show in January of 2025. The show was not a success, and as such there have been rumbling from exhibitors, partners, and others about what DSC will do next. Robbie reached out to DSC CEO Rob McCanna to come on the podcast and talk about all of it, post the press release that just came out explaining the route forward for DSC over the next 5 years. Rob talks about his tenure as the new CEO, addresses rumors about the show and the move from Dallas to Atlanta, and provides a vision for the future of what they're going to do next and where they go from here. He explains the mistakes that were made, and the measures being put in place to rectify those mistakes, and puts to bed the internet bashing and rumor mills. This is a special podcast episode for Blood Origins - its essentially a full circle moment for Robbie. Robbie has always been interested in wildlife conservation, and growing up in South Africa, in a non-hunting environment, his outlets for wildlife conservation were very limited. Robbie first met John Ledger when he was 14 years old (he's 46 years young now!) and now he's meeting him for the second time 32 years later. John was the director of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) of South Africa at the time - an organization that unfortunately has changed drastically since John's 17-year run as their director. In this week's roundup, Robbie is joined by returning guest Charles Whitwam to discuss what is shaping up to be one of the wildest legislative sessions in recent memory. They explore the challenges facing wildlife commissions, AB 1038 (a controversial black bear bill in California), the importance of public education and how our stories as hunters can help shape perceptions about hunting, and the need for effective, truly scientific management strategies. Robbie Kroger, founder of Blood Origins, is on the front lines when it comes to defending the practice of hunting, counteracting misinformation proposed by ARA's, and in my opinion leading the way in portraying the real meaning behind what it means to be a hunter and the benefits hunting can provide to the greater community. Join Robbie and myself as we discuss his latest projects with Blood Origins and how the hunting community is fighting back against those who wish to see it banished. I highly suggest you follow Blood Origins and as a hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman, you throw your full support behind him. Blood Origins: bloodorigins.org/our-roots/ RATE & REVIEW......Thanks!
Glen Thurston is the founder of a mental health focused organization in New Zealand called ‘Mental Hunts' - and today he shares his incredible story with Robbie. His story started with the tremendously big step of admitting he had a problem with his mental health, to an ordeal that resulted in him losing his gun license and all his guns to authorities in New Zealand. As a result of that admission, he has really started to think that others may have a similar story and/or need to hear his story to understand that things will be ok. Glen's story addresses an important issue occurring around the world as it relates to mental health and guns, as well as pushing back on the ‘conventional wisdom' from a guy's perspective, of having to be hard and not admit or talk about your problems. If you're seeking help, know there are resources available to you in whatever country you're listening from. Australia is home to likely the largest population of feral invasive species in the world. From all of the deer species, horses, camels, donkeys, buffalo - and PIGS, Australia has a rich history of introductions, and also a need for significant management of these species. Additionally, typically around the world, chasing any animal with dogs is typically frowned upon, and as such the Australian Pig Doggers and Hunters Association has never really pushed to change their narrative. That was until now. Ned Makim, the President and Acting Executive Director of the Australian Pig Doggers and Hunters' Association, joins Robbie on the Blood Origins podcast to discuss the association's work changing the narrative, rhetoric, and even visual representation of who pig hunters REALLY are in Australia. Robbie and Ned dive deep into the data - including what impact pig hunting has on the environment, the economics of pig hunting in Australia, and beyond. There are certain topics in this world that are likely the most controversial - wolves, feral cats, and wild horses. Wild Horses for some reason evoke such emotions that there has been little work done on exposing what is actually going on. We are starting to delve into this topic more and more and there is not greater place to talk about this topic than Nevada. Former Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) employee Jenny Lesieutre is now speaking out around the management of wild horses after being involved in the space for almost two decades. As a horse owner and self-professed horse lover herself, you'll find that it is not from a place of malice that she advocates for management, rather because they are destroying their own habitat and environment without badly needed management protocols - because leaving them alone isn't working. This is a MUST LISTEN PODCAST. Get to know the guest: https://www.instagram.com/jennylesieutre/ https://votefab40.com/2024/jenny-lesieutre Do you have questions we can answer? Robbie and Ashlee chop it up about Robbie's India trip now that he's back stateside and the human-wildlife conflict the Blood Origins team witnessed during their trip documentary filming in India, including two people being killed within 20 kilometers of their base by tigers, while the team was there. The team then outlines plans for upcoming documentaries focused on sustainable practices and human-wildlife conflict, along with recent bipartisan support stateside for several wildlife conservation bills to address the fiscal challenges wildlife agencies are facing. It's such an action packed Roundup that we completely forgot to connect with our audience via the text message platform - if you want to connect with us text us at 601-790-0607. Kirsty Redman has many titles but the two she is most proud of are - Emerging Tuskers Project Coordinator, as well as the Elephant Hall Museum Director in Letaba Rest Camp for Kruger National Park in South Africa. Kirsty joined Robbie live from her office (yes and its true, Robbie and Kirsty were surrounded by garbage bags of elephant dung - all in the name of research!) to discuss big tuskers in the park, the history of the museum (which started as a marketing effort and evolved into more conservation and research efforts), and to really give folks an insight into the history of elephants. Gogo Nomsa Sibeko, a traditional sangoma healer in South Africa, joins Robbie to talk about this rich tradition and - much like hunters - the many times inaccurate perception around them that comes out of Hollywood and movies. Robbie met Gogo back in November at the Custodians conference and was fascinated by her and the fact that she is facing the same stigmas as hunters are - that we pillage the environment for our own good. Along with her views on sustainability (she needs natural resources for her craft), Gogo discusses the human pressures surrounding them, and more! Ian Harmer, the foremost walking safari guide for rhinos in Matopos, and owner of African Wanderer Safaris out of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe joins Robbie on the show from his safari in the Matapos Hills - a land full of mystique and magic and rhinos. The Matopos hills are rich with history, stories, and incredible wildlife including Rhinos. What's so good about Ian is that he has been in Matopos working for 30 years and literally knows Rhinos since their births. Ian isn't a hunter, he is a walking tour operator and a member of Zimbabwe Professional Guides Association. This is especially important podcast as Rhino poaching incidents start ramping up and asking someone who is on the ground daily with Rhino's - what is the path forward? On this week's Roundup, Ashlee is being joined by co-hosts Chris Borgatti, the Director of Policy for the 36 states in the Eastern Region of North America for Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, as well as Brock Wahl, the North Dakota state chairman for BHA, who will update us on the CWD bills moving through the ND state legislator and how to form a strong BHA chapter. Chris covers a commission restructuring bill in New Hampshire, a bill moving through IL that would potentially increase public access to 85,000 navigable waterways within the state, a SD bill designed to increase the public safety zone and thereby decrease public access, a set of MA bills that would decrease the setback zone and increase public access, and potential bear seasons in FL and CT. Robbie Kroger is the founder of Blood Origins. Born and raised in South Africa and now calling the United States home, Robbie has dedicated his life to shedding light on the real “why” behind hunting. Far from the stereotypes and controversies that often cloud the topic, Robbie's mission is to show that hunting isn't just about taking an animal's life—it's about giving back, building community, and connecting deeply with nature. Drawing on his background as a scientist and conservationist, Robbie weaves personal stories and powerful insights that challenge the status quo. Hear firsthand how Blood Origins began—an initiative fueled by reverence for heritage and a desire to tell the untold stories of hunters, families, and communities worldwide. Robbie's perspective will reframe your thoughts on hunting and its place in modern conservation, from protecting wildlife habitats to understanding the roots that run through generations. This conversation transcends politics and touches on the heart of what it means to be human: our responsibility to each other, to the land, and to the legacy we leave behind. This is hunting as you've never heard it before—raw, real, and undeniably powerful. Strap in and get ready to have your assumptions challenged in the best way possible. https://bloodorigins.org/
