August 19, 1984. Manassas, Virginia. At around 4:15 AM, the doorbell rings at the residence of Johnny Bowman, a 31-year old trooper with the Virginia State Police. When Johnny answers the door, he is viciously attacked by an assailant who stabs him over 40 times before fleeing the scene and they leave behind a wig, glasses and hardhat which were possibly used as a disguise. Years later, investigators announce that their prime suspect is Perry Worrell, a former state trooper who happened to be one of Johnny's closest friends, and they believe the murder was committed over some sort of personal dispute. However, there is not enough evidence to make an arrest and the crime continues to be surrounded by unanswered questions. A viral video from Virginia State Police released Friday shows two of the agency's helicopters rescuing flood victims from the roof of an eastern Tennessee hospital. Brad Kutner spoke with VSP and got the first public account of how the daring mission unfolded.
A tractor-trailer carrying paper products caught fire on the Varina-Enon Bridge in Eastern Henrico County Monday morning, snarling traffic and closing southbound travel lanes on I-295 at mile marker 18.7. The crash was reported at about 8:15 a.m., according to Virginia State Police. The driver was not injured, but charges are pending the result of an investigation. According to police, the truck struck the bridge on the right hand side of the road before catching fire. The Virginia State Police Sept. 27 issued a critically missing adult alert for a missing 57-year-old Newport News man who was last seen in the Richmond area. Eric Lamont Lamb is believed to be in danger and in need of assistance. Lamb is described as a Black man with brown eyes, a bald head, who is 6 foot 1 in height and weighs 165 pounds. He was last seen Sept. 26 at about 2:10 p.m. on Hull Street and Cowardin Avenue in Richmond. Police believe Lamb may be driving a white 2021 Nissan Versa with Virginia plates reading TPE-1972. A tractor-trailer driver was charged with reckless driving after the raised bed of his vehicle struck an overhead traffic sign during a morning commute on Interstate 64 in Eastern Henrico, Virginia State Police officials said. The crash occurred at about 9:36 a.m. at the 200-mile marker on I-64 westbound. The truck was driven by 62-year-old Richard Houston Jr. of Lorton, Virginia. The raised bed separated from the cab when it struck the sign. Traffic came to a halt until 11 a.m., when crews were able to remove the trailer and sign from the road. Houston was not injured. Virginia State Police will be joining law enforcement officials nationwide for the Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, which is designed to help reduce auto crashes and fatalities during the Labor Day holiday. Virginia had a deadly start to the summer driving season, with state police alone investigating 25 deaths in the week following Memorial Day. With FBI Norfolk informing that Colonial Parkway Murders families at a meeting on January 6, 2024, that they are short $300,000 in order to test DNA and other forensic evidence in the Colonial Parkway Murders, we thought we might revisit earlier discussion of the FBI testing budget available in the Parkway case. Given how many miillion dollars the FBI and Virginia State Police have spent on the Colonial Parkway Murders investigation, we are outraged that $300,000 stands in the way of proper forensic testing in this case. In their book, A Special Kind of Evil: The Colonial Parkway Serial Killings, authors Blaine Pardoe and Victoria Hester wrote about Alan Wade Wilmer, Sr., who was the prime suspect in the 1988 disappearance and murders of Richard Keith Call and Cassandra Hailey. He was under police survellance and fit the profile the F.B.I. had developed. An expert polygrapher administered a polygraph exam to Wilmer—and he passed.
