Most business schools are still forming committees to figure out what to do about AI. Kogod School of Business at American University formed a committee, but far from the typical higher ed standards. Leadership gave it six weeks and a five-page limit, and used the recommendation to integrate AI into every department, major, and minor. Three years later, undergraduate enrollment is up 40%, applications are up 50%, and more than 90% of faculty are using AI in the classroom. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with returning guests David Marchick, Dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University, and Angela Virtu, Professor of IT and Analytics and Associate Director of Kogod's AI Institute, about how the school moved from a dean's instinct that AI would be big to a fully embedded, faculty-driven transformation that has redefined how business education is taught, assessed, and experienced by students. Marchick and Virtu walk through how they navigated shared governance at speed, leaned into 14 core course coordinators to spread adoption like wildfire, and built a culture where faculty are making stuff up, trying things, and pivoting when something doesn't work. Virtu explains how courses are being rebuilt from the ground up, with professors shifting from lecturers to coaches and students building real software for real clients. Marchick shares the enrollment and media results, including being named the first AI-first business school by Bloomberg Businessweek. This conversation is especially relevant for institutional leaders trying to figure out how to move on AI without blowing up their governance structures or losing faculty trust. Kogod's playbook worked within existing academic processes, and the results are measurable. Topics Covered: • How a conversation with a Google executive sparked the AI initiative before ChatGPT went mainstream • Why Marchick gave the faculty committee six weeks and a five-page limit instead of a two-year study • The top-down and bottom-up strategy that moved faculty adoption from a handful of volunteers to over 90% • How 14 core course coordinators became the tactical lever for culture change across the school • The shift from professors as lecturers to professors as coaches • How non-quantitative students are programming and building functioning apps using AI • Kogod's scaffolded four-year curriculum: AI literacy in year one, domain-specific applications in year two, deep dives in years three and four, and a capstone that combines all three pillars • Why the school teaches what's wrong with AI before teaching what's right • The AI assessment problem no institution has solved yet • What's next: domain-specific AI apps, student portfolios, and an AI minor for non-business students Real-World Examples Discussed: • Tommy White's course with no readings and no textbook, where students use AI prompts to find their own materials and come to class with different sources on the same topic • Kelly Frias's advertising class where students built a social media content tool and owner dashboard for a real college-apparel business with brand ambassadors at 75 campuses • Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, telling Marchick that the specific AI tool matters less than teaching students to feel comfortable experimenting and trying new things • A distinguished Kogod scholar describing AI as like having a PhD student for research productivity Three Key Takeaways for Leadership: 1. Culture first, training second, technology third. Faculty adoption spreads when leadership creates permission to experiment and fail, not when it purchases a platform. 2. Teach what's wrong with AI before teaching what's right. A human has to be in the loop at the beginning and at the end. AI can be a collaborator, a partner, an assistant, but it cannot be a substitute. 3. Don't wait for the technology to stabilize. AI capabilities are changing in weeks. If you tried it two years ago and weren't impressed, try it again. The updates in just the last few weeks represent really big strides. This episode offers a practical, replicable look at what happens when a business school treats AI integration as a culture change initiative and moves fast enough to stay ahead of the technology. Kogod's transformation is relevant to any institution trying to figure out how to act on AI without waiting for a perfect plan. Following principles of business administration is the path to disaster for your business or any business. Yet business administration is what's taught in business school and revered as the highest goal of management. We need to change how we think about business, which requires changing our mental model.Entrepreneurial leadership is the new mental model..In Part 2 of the special 3-part series of The Value Creators Podcast featuring the alternative approach to the business administration methods taught in MBA school, Venture Mode, Hunter Hastings and co-author Mark Packard continue their exposition of what comes after traditional business administration. Together, they examine how business schools institutionalize bureaucracy, why reform from inside the system is nearly impossible, and how administration mode crowds out entrepreneurial leadership. They introduce a radically different alternative: the Master of Business Enterprise (MBE)—a new model of business education grounded in entrepreneurship, experimental learning, uncertainty, and real-world value creation. The conversation explores why customers—not processes or analytics—must be at the center of business thinking, and why skills like empathy, judgment, creativity, and tenacity are essential for navigating uncertainty. This episode challenges long-held assumptions about business models, what business education should teach, who it should serve, and how entrepreneurial leaders are truly developed.Key Insights:Why the MBA reinforces administration mode and systematically underproduces entrepreneurial leaders. How exploration, discovery, and customer-centered value reshape business education. Why entrepreneurship must be learned through practice, empathy, and real-world experience.Resources:➡️ Learn What They Didn't Teach You In Business School: The Value Creators Online Business CourseConnect with Mark Packard on LinkedInGet the book "Venture Mode: Escape the Administration Trap"Connect with Hunter Hastings on LinkedInSubscribe to The Value Creators on SubstackChapters:00:00 – Why Business Schools Produce Administrators, Not Entrepreneurs02:10 – How the MBA Institutionalizes Administration Mode04:50 – Why Accreditation Prevents Real Reform07:15 – Introducing the Master of Business Enterprise (MBE)09:50 – Subjectivism, Customers, and Value Creation12:45 – Why Entrepreneurship Cannot Be Reduced to Checklists15:40 – Teaching Empathy, Judgment, and Creativity19:20 – Learning Entrepreneurship Through Practice23:30 – Who Is the Real Customer of Business Education?31:45 – The Future of Entrepreneurial Leadership

"Candidates aren't chasing career switches—they're investing in long-term skills." If you're considering business school, you've probably asked yourself some big questions: Is it worth it? What should I prioritize? And how are other candidates making this decision? In this episode of Inside the GMAT, GMAC Zach sits down with his colleague Andrew Walker, Director of Industry Communications at GMAC, to unpack insights from the 2026 GMAC Prospective Student Survey—featuring perspectives from over 4,000 candidates worldwide. Together, they explore how candidate motivations are shifting, what "ROI" really means today, and how global preferences for where to study are evolving. In this episode, you'll learn: Why fewer candidates are pursuing business school for career switching How AI is shaping expectations for business school curricula What candidates really mean when they talk about ROI Key differences between younger and more experienced applicants Why interest in studying in the U.S. is shifting globally The growing demand for business master's degrees vs. MBAs How candidates are thinking about financing and application strategy Whether you're early in your journey or actively applying, this episode will help you better understand how to approach your decision—and what really matters. Key Takeaways: ROI is broader than ever: Candidates are thinking beyond salary—factoring in skills, network, personal growth, and long-term career resilience. Career switching is no longer the primary driver: More candidates are pursuing business school to build capabilities, not completely change paths. AI is reshaping expectations—but not replacing fundamentals: Demand for AI in the classroom is rising, but core skills like problem solving and strategic thinking remain central. Global study preferences are shifting: Interest in traditional destinations like the U.S. is softening, while Western Europe and parts of Asia are gaining traction. Rankings matter less—outcomes matter more: Candidates are increasingly prioritizing career outcomes and ROI over prestige alone. Younger vs. older candidates have different motivations: Younger: income, status, global experiences Older: targeted skill-building and career advancement Business master's degrees are gaining momentum: Especially among younger candidates—and even mid-career professionals looking for focused upskilling. Financing is central to decision-making: Candidates are applying to multiple programs and increasingly relying on financial aid as part of their strategy. Corporate profits are booming. So why haven't most workers gotten a raise? For decades, we've been told a simple story: work harder, become more productive, and your wages will follow. But what if that story was never really true? This week, Nick and Goldy talk to Arindrajit Dube—one of the most influential economists shaping how we understand wages, and author of a new book, The Wage Standard: What's Wrong in the Labor Market and How to Fix It —for a conversation that cuts to the heart of how pay actually works in America. At a moment when the gap between what the economy produces and what workers take home keeps growing, this episode challenges some of the most fundamental assumptions in economics—and asks what it would take to build a labor market that actually delivers for working people. Because if wages aren't just set by “the market”… then they can be changed. Arin Dube is an economist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and one of the leading researchers on wages and labor markets. He is the author of The Wage Standard: What's Wrong in the Labor Market and How to Fix It, and has advised policymakers in the U.S. and internationally on minimum wage policy and labor market dynamics. Mastering Business Scalability: Scott Abbott on Fusing AI, Systems, and Human GrowthIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur Podcast, host Josh Elledge sat down with Scott Abbott, the serial entrepreneur, investor, and Founder & CEO of BOS-UP. The conversation explored the critical intersection of modern technology and timeless business principles, focusing on how Scott's "Boss Up" framework helps startups and mid-market companies scale effectively. By integrating AI-driven insights with high-level coaching and human-centered development, Scott provides a roadmap for leaders who want to move beyond mere "hustle" and toward a structured, engineering-minded approach to growth. This episode is a masterclass in leveraging the latest digital tools without losing the "soft tissue" of emotional intelligence and personal reflection. The Boss Up Methodology: Balancing Business Mechanics with Human Soft TissueScaling a business requires a dual focus on rigorous systems and the human factors that drive them. Scott Abbott describes this balance through the lens of "mechanics"—the essential business competencies and disciplines—and "soft tissue," which encompasses conflict resolution, anxiety management, and boundary setting. For an organization to truly thrive, it must implement a blueprint that democratizes high-level strategies once reserved only for the Fortune 500. By adopting an engineering mindset, founders can build a "Boss Up Blue" infrastructure that identifies operational gaps, while simultaneously using "Boss Up Moments" to foster the emotional resilience needed to navigate the inevitable stresses of entrepreneurship.A cornerstone of this methodology is the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence as a partner in critical thinking rather than a replacement for it. Scott advocates for a three-dimensional learning model that fuses traditional reading and writing with AI-powered customization. Instead of using AI to generate shortcuts, leaders are encouraged to use tools like ChatGPT or NotebookLM to create personalized journaling prompts and organize complex insights. This technology-enhanced reflection allows for a deeper, more contextual understanding of business challenges, enabling a founder to show up to coaching sessions with a refined perspective that maximizes the value of human-to-human mentorship.Democratizing high-level business education is the ultimate mission behind the BOS-UP ecosystem. By offering open-source content and a social enterprise model where profits support under-resourced entrepreneurs, Scott is championing a form of humanitarian capitalism. This approach ensures that sophisticated tools for work-life integration and organizational scaling are accessible to all, regardless of their funding stage. When technology, coaching, and human-centered philosophies are fused correctly, the result is an interactive learning environment where founders can build not just successful companies, but purpose-driven lives that impact their communities and the global market.About Scott AbbottScott Abbott is a serial entrepreneur, investor, and the Founder & CEO of BOS-UP. With decades of experience building and scaling companies, he is a dedicated advocate for lifelong learning and the strategic use of technology in personal development. #104:Welcome back to the Lenders Playbook Podcast. This is episode 104, and I'm your host, Matt Rosen.Today we sit down with Roy Landers. An attorney and former judge... and I've got to say — this was one of the most eye-opening and fun conversations I've had in a while.Roy buys profitable small businesses from retiring owners and scales them with investors. It's an incredible model for entrepreneurs who want to own a business without starting from scratch. Many of these acquisitions also include real estate, creating opportunities for loans backed by strong collateral, cash flow for investors, and sometimes even equity participation when the deal makes sense. We talk about mergers and acquisitions... buying boring, service-based businesses, scaling them, buying more, and eventually exiting. This is truly a fascinating niche, and I know you're going to love this one.First a Quick shoutout to one of the lenders we work with — Deephaven Mortgage. If you're a real estate investor who's ever been told ‘you don't qualify' by a traditional bank, this is exactly why Deephaven exists. They specialize in Non-QM loans, which basically means they look at deals differently — using common sense and flexible underwriting instead of rigid government guidelines. They work with over 1,000 mortgage brokers nationwide and fund loans for investors, landlords, and entrepreneurs who don't always fit the traditional box.Deephaven is headquartered in Charlotte and backed by Pretium, a major investment manager in real estate and mortgage finance. If you're looking for financing on your next deal, reach out to me and I'll see if Deephaven could be a fit. "AI is going to be as profound as fire or electricity. Even if that's one-millionth true, we have to take it seriously." In this episode of Inside the GMAT, GMAC Zach sits down with David Marchick, Dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University, to explore how business education is being reshaped by AI, career pivots, and the skills that truly matter over a lifetime. Marchick reflects on his unconventional career path and how those experiences shape his student-first approach to leadership. He explains why "psychic income," not just financial return, drives his work in higher education, and why helping students experiment, fail, and grow outside the classroom is just as important as mastering core business fundamentals. A major focus of the conversation is Kogod's rapid and award-winning integration of artificial intelligence into every aspect of the business school—from curriculum and faculty research to operations and student learning. Marchick shares how Kogod moved quickly to embed AI literacy across disciplines, partnered with tools like Perplexity, and created a culture where experimentation with emerging technology is encouraged rather than feared. The discussion also tackles broader questions facing prospective students: how AI is changing leadership, why business degrees still matter in a non-linear career world, and how graduate education can empower creatives, career switchers, and non-traditional students to reinvent themselves. Marchick closes with advice for ambitious young professionals weighing business school, urging them to find the overlap between what they love, what they're good at, and where they're willing to keep learning—and relearning—over time. About David Marchick: David Marchick serves as Dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University. In this role, he leads the school's work to support more than 2,000 students and offer more than two dozen undergraduate and graduate degree and certification programs. He previously was an Adjunct Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University. Since Marchick took on the role of Dean in August 2022, the Kogod School of Business has unveiled major initiatives in sustainability, AI and entrepreneurship; raised more than the previous 10 years combined; attracted its largest-ever first-year undergraduate class; and almost doubled the number of endowed chairs for the school. Under Marchick's leadership, Kogod faculty and staff developed and implemented what Poets & Quants called "the most consequential AI transformation in business education." Welcome to episode #1021 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). At a time when strategy is often confused with forecasting and certainty is mistaken for rigor, the work of Roger Martininsists on a more demanding discipline: making clear, integrated choices under uncertainty. Named the world's #1 management thinker by Thinkers50 in 2017, Roger is a writer, strategy advisor, and the former Dean at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, where he served for fifteen years and reshaped how management education engages with real-world complexity. Over decades, he has advised CEOs at companies including Procter & Gamble, Lego, Ford, American Express, Verizon, and Steelcase, helping leaders move beyond abstract ambition toward actionable, coherent strategies. His thinking has long been a personal touchstone for navigating difficult, high-stakes business problems, and he remains my go-to guide when confronting complexity that resists easy answers… a familiarity reinforced by his return here after previous appearances. Before academia, he spent thirteen years at Monitor, serving as co-head of the firm and grounding his thinking in the realities of corporate decision-making. His newly updated book, Playing To Win, Expanded With Bonus HBR Articles - How Strategy Really Works co-authored with A.G. Lafley, remains one of the most influential strategy texts of the modern era, distilling strategy into a set of five integrated choices about where to play and how to win, supported by capabilities and systems that reinforce those decisions. Across thirteen books and more than thirty Harvard Business Review articles, Roger has explored integrative thinking, democratic capitalism, governance and the design of business itself, consistently challenging leaders to resist false tradeoffs and simplistic answers. His work confronts contemporary issues head-on: the misuse of AI as an answer machine rather than a thinking partner, the hollowing out of education into ideological extremes, the erosion of institutional trust and the persistent illusion that the future must resemble the past. Through it all, his argument is steady and clear: strategy fundamentals endure, and superior managerial effectiveness begins with disciplined thinking, principled choice, and the courage to commit. If you're not following his free Substack, you reall should. It's always an honor to spend tie with Roger. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 58:39. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Send me a direct message! In this episode, I break down a truth that ambitious women were never taught to name. The mainstream definition of psychological safety doesn't work for women who think fast, carry emotional responsibility like a second skin, and lead with conviction. I talk about why our bodies tighten in so-called “supportive” spaces, how early conditioning shapes the way we show up in leadership, and why emotional safety is actually rooted in the absence of self-betrayal, not the absence of conflict.I walk you through how personal history, cultural expectations, and professional norms collide for high-performing women, and how those layers change the way we understand safety, belonging, and power. You'll hear the real reasons why rooms want us softened, slowed down, or “reasonable,” and why ambitious women instinctively scan for emotional risks before saying a single word.I also name the specific emotional needs ambitious women carry but hide because we've been conditioned to believe they're “too much”: the need for autonomy, honesty, challenge, mental space, directness, and being taken seriously without having to prove ourselves over and over. Finally, I offer five concrete actions you can take this week to stop abandoning yourself and start rebuilding emotional safety from the inside out.If you're ready for real talk on leadership, identity, boundaries, emotional safety, and what it means to operate at your full capacity without apology, this episode is for you.Support the showLove what you heard? Welcome to episode #1007 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). The debate over hybrid work has become one of the most emotionally charged topics in business... but few people have studied it as deeply as Peter Cappelli, the George W. Taylor Professor of Management at the Wharton School and Director of its Center for Human Resources. In his latest book, In Praise Of The Office - The Limits To Hybrid And Remote Work, co-authored with Ranya Nehmeh, Peter challenges the idea that remote work is the inevitable future of knowledge work. Drawing from decades of research and real-world case studies, he argues that while technology has allowed us to untether from our desks, it has also quietly eroded the social fabric, mentorship and serendipity that make work meaningful, and organizations effective. In this conversation, Peter dives into the paradox of productivity versus connection, exploring why human resources has become more transactional, how AI is reshaping education and engagement, and why hybrid work often brings out the worst of both worlds when poorly managed. He also unpack how the office - once dismissed as a relic of corporate control - remains a critical engine for creativity, trust and long-term career growth. From the psychology of “coffee badging” to the economics of empty buildings, this discussion examines not just where we work, but what we risk losing when we stop showing up. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:04:44. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Listen and subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Listen and subscribe over at Spotify. Welcome to episode #1006 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). Disruption isn't always loud. It's often quiet, slow and deeply human. That's one of the lessons Scott Anthony has spent his career unpacking. As a leading voice on innovation and the managing partner emeritus at Innosight (the consultancy founded by the late Clayton Christensen), Scott has helped global companies navigate the uncertainty that comes with change. He si currently a Clinical Professor of Strategy at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business. His latest book, Epic Disruptions – 11 Innovations That Shaped Our Modern World, reframes how we think about progress through stories that stretch from gunpowder to generative AI, showing that real innovation rarely arrives overnight (he's also written eight other books). It compounds through persistence, vision and luck. In this conversation, we explore what disruption really looks like inside organizations: the emotional toll of change, why mergers and acquisitions often fail, and how the next generation of intrapreneurs can learn from past innovators rather than repeat their mistakes. We also talk about the future of business education and how AI is rewriting the way we learn, teach, and measure knowledge (and why the classic case study model still has a role to play if it evolves with the times). Scott's perspective is grounded in humility and curiosity, shaped by years of studying leaders who dared to think differently and systems that resisted transformation. Whether you're navigating the next big pivot, building within a legacy organization, or simply trying to understand how the forces of innovation ripple through industries, this conversation offers a rare mix of strategy and soul. It's not about predicting the next big thing, it's about learning to see the patterns in change itself. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 54:55. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Send us a textWELCOME BACK, BLASPHEMERS!I was ready to pull the plug. After 116 episodes of calling out the smoke and mirrors of online entrepreneurship, the spark dimmed and I nearly ended the show. That's when the truth smacked me in the face: I wasn't tired of the mic. I was tired of orbiting the same problem. The mission had outgrown the format. What started as unapologetic myth-busting now asks for something bigger: building women's power, leadership, and legacy without apology. This episode is the turning point. I share the burnout that nudged me toward a sunset, the quiet that delivered clarity, and the TEDx moment that lit a fire I could no longer defer. I get honest about why manipulative tactics thrive online, not just because of bad actors, but because so many of us were conditioned to outsource authority and doubt our own data. Instead of chasing hype cycles, we return to the source: strengthening self-trust, sharpening discernment, and designing strategy that protects agency. I talk candidly about choosing low-hanging fruit (operations, because it's safe and in-demand) versus answering the call I've felt for decades: women's leadership and thought leadership that move power, not just metrics. The show remains Business Blasphemy, but the center of gravity shifts. Expect bold truths, practical tools, and real stories from ambitious women building on their own terms. We'll call out harm when needed, without making harm the headline. We'll focus on identity, choice, negotiation, structural security, and the kind of operational clarity that lets you take smart risks. The question guiding every topic is simple: does this choice increase your agency? If you're ready to stop playing for scraps and start building a legacy that looks like you, hit follow, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a quick review to help others find the show. Your leadership starts here — unapologetic, unfiltered, and fully yours.Support the showLove what you heard? Let's stay connected! My guests today are Rick Ruback and Royce Yudkoff. Rick and Royce are Harvard Business School professors who teach their students how to search for, acquire, and run small business directly after graduation. It has been almost a decade since our first conversation, and unlike many past interviews that have become outdated due to technology or market changes, the core principles they shared about entrepreneurship through acquisition remain remarkably relevant today. They explore fascinating developments in the search-fund ecosystem, including the bifurcation between funded searchers targeting larger companies and self-funded entrepreneurs finding success with smaller businesses. Rick and Royce share their accumulated wisdom on what makes a company worth buying, why the "magic is in the multiples," and how their students consistently achieve impressive returns through patient, value-oriented business acquisition. Please enjoy my conversation with Rick Ruback and Royce Yudkoff.
