Unser Podcast-Tipp: Wir Weltmeister. This episode takes us to the Pony Bar, where we start out with a little quiz about Italy and Italian culture. Then, the students, Francesca Merletti, Maria Poltoratskaya, and Gaia Rupp fill us in on what connects them to Italy and explain the complexities of their national and cultural identities. At the end, the interview involves the audience and turns into a discussion of multiculturality and of some of the dilemmas faced by third culture or global individuals. cultureum.com LinkedIn: Dr. Henriette J. This is just a fun little casual conversation with my friend Sam Masotto of Bonn Place Brewing in my hometown of Bethlehem PA. We laughed a lot, didn't take much seriously, and I believe it was perfect! We discussed some nostalgic things such as Cassette Tapes, Velcro Wallets, Technology (or lack there of)... We talked coffee, Italy, grandmothers... New York, Newburgh Brewing, The Pony Bar and some of the gross things Sam drinks on their Instagram Reels. This was a blast, I think you're going to enjoy this! Looking forward to the next one! #beermightythings #bonnplace #craftbeer

In celebration of Untappd's 10th Anniversary, Greg is joined by Dan McLaughlin, founder of the Pony Bar in NYC. Dan McLaughlin got bitten by the beer bug in the mid-’90s, but it wasn’t until he was bartending at The Blind Tiger in New York City’s West Village back in 1999 that he first started thinking about running his own place. He and Pony Bar partner Pat Hughes opened their first in the mid-2000s (Lansdowne Road in Hell’s Kitchen, which is still open), but one wasn’t enough. “I felt I had the know-how and financials to pursue opening a bar that centered on American-made beer from small breweries,” McLaughlin says. From there, Pony Bar was born.

EPISODE SUMMARY: As we move through May, it felt important to pay homage to the beers that were designed with this month in mind. Join us as we drink through a very traditional example of a Maibock, and then delve into something a little more modern. Food pairings, outside activities, and a reason to stop and enjoy a variation of Lager that will be harder to find as the weeks go by after this episode. What We’re Drinking: 1516 by Red Oak Brewery Link: https://untappd.com/b/red-oak-brewery-1516/1522417 ABV: 7% IBU: 22 Notes: Red Oak’s 1516 Heller Bock, appealing to Connoisseurs of exceptional beers, is a strong, full-bodied, smooth bier. 1516 Heller Bock, golden in color, is Brewed according to the Bavarian 1516 Law of Purity. Glory Is Goldenbock by Burial & Zillicoah Beer Company Link: https://untappd.com/b/burial-beer-co-glory-is-goldenbock/3575781 ABV: 6% IBU: 30 Notes: Glory is a destination for those who follow the gospel. It gives a hearkened voice to the apostles of beverage, those who remind us that taste is an amalgamation of tradition and revival. So we got together with our friends down on the river at Zilicoah Beer Co., to forge an often drinkable, yet full-flavored lager. Inspired by the Hellesbock-styled golden lagers of Germany, we decided to tip a hat to the regional American brewers that breathed new life into those styles in the new world. Glory Is was made from German barley, noble hops, and forged through a full decoction before lagering to crystalline perfection. Fully aged. Never Sacrificed. My guest for this month’s podcast is Jana Hansmann, AKA Harbour Violet. Born in the small village of Bremervörde, she grew up in Meckelstedt and was surrounded by the love for music from her grandparents. Around 2002 she took up the guitar after a surprising musical influence, and developed her identity through the years, weaving and winding between classical, rock and soul, picking up many traits along the way. Today you can find her in Hamburg where she’s a regular at several music venues. She developed an aptly named genre for herself which she calls “Soul Folk”. A good friend ladies and gents, Harbour Violet. Permission granted by Harbour Violet for the songs featured and were recorded at Osterbrookplatz and Pony Bar, Hamburg. This month my guest is Byren Sawell, also known as simply Byren, an Australian singer songwriter currently travelling and touring in Europe, his shy manner off stage is a complete contrast to his incredible presence and voice on stage, which puts him ahead of his time at the age of just 23. He talks about the early years with his friend Jerry and their collaboration as “Jez and Biz” in his hometown of Newcastle, Australia. We go on to discuss his ongoing solo project starting off with his adventures into Melbourne and the observations he channeled into a song, and onto our mutual appreciation for Bon Iver, one of his musical influences, who’s song Perth helped him cope with the passing of his grandfather. We discuss his most popular song, Woman, recorded live at Pony Bar in Hamburg where we initially met and finally tells us what’s next in his journey. “Melbourne” and “Perth” were both recorded live at Mobile Blues Club here in Hamburg. Big thanks to Byren for permission to use his songs and Tom Klose for the Pony Bar recording.
