After checking in that IPA on Untappd, go over to iTunes and leave us a review, would ya? Today, we are joined by Greg Avola. Greg is a entrepreneur who is responsible for creating the biggest app in the world of craft beer, Untappd. Greg is a really unique and interesting guy, who has had his hands in so many profitable, game changing apps. Stay tuned to see what Greg is up to next. We also talk about what we are pretty terrible at, Mike talks about useless meeting, and we also discuss bee beards. Have a listen!
On this Podcast, we speak with Untapped Co-founder Greg Avola on how he started untapped, some of the challenges of the last 10 years, and discuss what he is thinking of doing next.
This week’s guest invented one of the most impactful things in American beer history —but it’s not a beer style, or a recipe, or a festival, or a piece of equipment—it’s an app. Untappd grew from a side project for Greg Avola and his partner Tim Mather—one that they moonlighted for on weekends—to a leading social experience for beer geeks in a very short amount of time. Basically you try a beer, you log the experience, and it keeps track of your history. You can share that experience with others, rate it, post pics, tag bars and breweries where you enjoyed it—each little interaction creates a massive web of crowd data over time. Some producers find it fascinating and valuable. Others are haunted by it and think it’s ruining beer. Or maybe already has. But it’s surely, like any software, largely what we make of it. But what is Untappd itself made of? This interview follows on co-founder Greg Avola’s recent exit from his role at the company—after it was acquired by Next Glass a few years ago, Greg’s role became less of a product engineer and tweaker, and more of a creative director, working across a lot of other roles, outlining new strategies, and integrating with the ecosystem of follow-on acquisitions like Beer Advocate, and most recently Hop Culture. With the intent to build a B2B and B2C ecosystem that enabled the rating, tracking, promotion and purchasing of the beers people find most interesting. Basically leveraging content to create a new sort of tier in the 3-tier system. But it’s not without its challenges, both personal and professional. In this conversation Greg talks a lot about what it’s like to be a founder of a small tech project that goes big. The burden that places on the individual, and how evolving in an acquisition environment is fraught with personal challenges. But it also outlines how the scope of Untappd is shifting. Their numbers are down in the U.S. but growing rapidly abroad. Not unlike what happened with one of its predecessors, Ratebeer. And the other acquisitions, like Beer Advocate, haven’t really panned out the way it was imagined, leaving most of the creative and strategic onus on Untappd itself, a challenge it seems to have met with some renewed focus on content, events, and overall community-building in the past year. In Greg’s open letter about his decision to step down, he was uncommonly transparent about his rationale, experiences, and hopes. And that’s the catalyst for us talking today—from one start-up founder to another. I think it’s critical that more people openly share the nature of the sacrifices people like Greg make to see their idea grow.

Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
On the Hop Forward Podcast this week we talk with Greg Avola, CEO of the popular beer check-in app, Untappd, which celebrates its 10th birthday this week, discussing everything from big data, review culture and why 4pm is officially Beer O’Clock. Twelve years ago, my wife and I started a list that we stuck to our fridge called ‘Beers We Have Known and Loved’. The idea was simple: for every beer we’d purchased from The Dram Shop, a small independent retailer of microbrewed beers, fine wines and world whiskies, we’d write down the name of the beer, a comment and rate the beer out of 10. Needless to say, that piece of paper has long disappeared but the memory of one particular German beer remains etched on my mind over a decade on. Simply called Beer Rauchen, or ‘Smoke Beer’ in English, this black liquid did not have the sublime subtle smoked-sausage-meets-breakfast-ceral taste often associated with the style, but rather - as my scathing review testified - ‘tastes like fag ash!’ 0/10. You could argue that this humble lined-sheet of A4 was a precursor to websites such as RateBeer or apps such as Untappd. The idea of keeping a log of things you love - or, in this case, loathe - isn’t new. Beer tickers throughout the years have journal after journal entries containing reviews of the latest guest ale down the local, beers revered at festivals and casual comments from evenings in by the fire on a cold winter’s night with a bottle of something dark and heartwarming. In the privacy of, to keep such a record of my personal opinions is neither here nor there. But how does that translate in the digital age where reviews are open to interpretation, public for all to see, and grant direct access and dialog to the producers themselves? These are questions Greg Avola, CEO of Untappd, has had to wrestle with for the last ten years. Untappd is an app that allows users to keep track of their beers and allows for open conversations surrounding those check-ins, familiar to most brewers and beer fans alike for a variety of reasons. I’ve yet to meet a brewer who hasn’t felt the eurphic hit as a shot of dopamine pulses through their veins due to a string of positive reviews, and then - in the next instance - has been hit in the gut by a punchy offhand comment that seems unjustified on every level. Whatever your relationship with Untappd, there’s no denying that it does what it does very well and is collecting vast amounts of data regarding worldwide beer trends, which will prove invaluable over the coming months and years. And who hasn’t enjoyed reading some of the worst reviews from keyboard warriors and armchair detectives as featured on the Worst Beer Blog. In honour of Untappd turning 10, we’ve introduced a little feature we think you’ll enjoy…! Stay tuned. --- Find out more from Hop Forward and our partners… Follow is on Social Media: Facebook / Instagram / Twitter / LinkedIn Visit hopforward.beer for more insights and a range of branding, marketing and business development services to help you and your beer business get ahead. We’re sheltered-in-place and slamming way more of some killer hoppy beers than normal, because we don’t actually have to share. In our first remotely-recorded episode, we overcome a brief technical glitch before returning to what feels very normal: Craig and Ryan fumbling through flavor descriptors while distracting each other with random stories from our past. Craig has invented the perfect game for these times, Ryan’s trying to make a deal with Greg Avola, and we catch up on each other’s new quarantine hobbies. Other talking points include mint creamsicles, Mario Kart coaching, Idahos 1 through 6, Mr. Met, the shirt technique, statued asses, bad Altoids stunts, and the secret of the green river dye. Recorded 4/7/20 Beers Reviewed Hubbard’s Cave - Clean Pale (Midwest pale ale) Half Acre Beer Company - Tome (Hazy pale ale) Cruz Blanca Brewery/Hop Butcher for the World - Hard Right Angle (Hazy IPA) Old Irving Brewing Co. - Beezer (Double dry-hopped IPA) Hop Butcher for the World/Eagle Park Brewing Company - Swans of Lir (Milkshake DIPA w/ mint and vanilla)
Greg Avola, founder of Untappd, and Todd Alstrom, co-founder of Beer Advocate, are joined by Sam Calagione, founder and president of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, for the very first Sessionable Saturdays! If you’re a millennial beer lover (or heck, a beer lover of any age!) then you know Untappd. In this app, beer drinkers can check-in, review, and share pictures of the beer they’ve got in front of them. Simply put, Untappd is the social media platform for beer. Co-Founders Tim Mather and Greg Avola had never met before they found one another on Twitter, and while they created the app assuming only a handful of their friends would give it a shot, Untappd now has well over 8 million users. I met up with Greg and Tim in the middle of this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, and amidst all of the beer-fueled chaos, they were able to share the story behind Untappd’s growth and the lessons learned (and beers consumed) along the way. After you listen, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!
Cheers to the creator of Untappd! We talk about the beer app's humble beginnings and how it grew into a keg-sized success. Find out how it's built, what the backend is like, and what new suds are to come! Special Guest: Greg Avola.
