Buckle up. We're going to dispel some popular and beloved notions.
With Tax Day on the horizon, tax tips, tricks, and hacks are being shared more than ever. From making charitable donations to incorporating and running everything through a company, word on the street is that the wealthy use particular tax strategies to minimize the amount of tax they owe.But while it might be tempting to try them, making the wrong decision about your taxes is an expensive mistake that can cost you many times more than what you would have paid initially. To help make sure you're on the right track, tax specialist Réginald Pierre-Louis is back for part two of our tax myth series. Réginald has more than ten years of practice in the field and has a great way of making complex taxation rules and legislation more understandable so you can make sure you're filing accurately. In this episode, Marcelo and Réginald talk about why it's challenging to define a threshold for richness, how facts and feelings shape our perspective, what research shows about who pays the most taxes, and why many of the commonly shared “rich people” tax strategies might not be suitable for you.Thank you for listening!Key Topics:Why it's so hard to come up with a definition of a rich person (1:37)How facts and feelings shape our perspective on wealth and poverty (7:25)People on both ends of the wealth spectrum are abusing the system (10:25)Surprising income statistics across Canada (12:35)Myth #1: The rich don't pay taxes (16:33)Tax distribution across income levels (19:21)Myth #2: When wealthy people make charitable donations, they're doing it because they'll get it back on their tax return (22:00)Myth #3: I'll create a company for myself like the rich do so I can get tax savings (26:18)Myth #4: I can include my personal expenses within my company (31:32)Myth #5: My corporation can pay a salary to my spouse and children, and since they have a lower tax rate, I'll pay less in taxes (35:58)Myth #6: My company should own my home (37:07)Myth #7: I'm saving money in my business by paying cash and avoiding sales taxes (43:05)Mentioned in this Episode:Réginald Pierre-Louis on LinkedInTulett, Matthews & AssociatesKeith Matthews' Book | The Empowered Investor: A Guide to Building Better PortfoliosThanks for Listening!Be sure to subscribe on Apple, Google, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Doth Protest Too Much: A Protestant Historical-Theology Podcast
Dr. Ariel Hessayon joins Andrew, Charlie, and James today to talk about the books that are often considered 'Apocrypha' in the Protestant tradition. We discuss: -The difference between the Septuagint and the Hebrew Bible -The speculation on the closing of the Jewish canon by the time of Jesus -The early church father Jerome's approach to canonicity -The very different ways the term 'Apocryphal' has been used or applied -The Reformers' and Council of Trent's approaches toward these books -We also touch on a few of Dr. Hessayon's other interests in the beginning (including "monstrous births" and crypto-Judaism). Dr. Hessayon is a scholar of early modern history. He has taught courses on European philosophy, the occult, heresy, apocalypticism, and the English Revolution. He is a Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London. He holds a PhD from Selwyn College, Cambridge University. Debunking Popular Beliefs by Arvat Mcclaine
In this heightened climate of Black liberation, we come across the idea of support vs. nonsupport. In episode 12, the WAGNN team discusses various situations where people were canceled based on cultural rules, societal norms, and popular beliefs. The WAGNN ladies dissect the following questions. What qualifies as a cancel candidate? Do we cancel too early? When do we forgive those for their mistakes? Or are we too hypersensitive? The WAGNN crew discusses current events, businesses, and people that were inducted into the cancel culture. Elevated emotions drive the overuse of the cancel culture without giving adequate time to apologize. Appropriate research is the foundation of informed decision making. WAGNN offers guidelines on how to become uncancelled and appropriate apologies when a business or person is canceled. We challenge you to open your ears and thoughts while expanding your knowledge and understanding of people, situations, and cultures. Please leave your comments below; good, bad, or indifferent, we welcome all opinions and feedback.

My guest today is Jocey Rodriguez, my right hand person. She has been on show multiple times and if you’re part of our private Facebook group, you certainly have benefited from her expertise. A couple of weeks ago, Jocey and I were discussing cases, and we got on the topic of fertility urban legends that people believe to be true and how we wish these urban legends didn’t spread like wildfire. And you know what I’m talking about. “Eat pineapple and drink pomegranate juice.” “Use Robitussin to thin the cervical mucus.” Listen we totally get it, when nothing is happening the way you envisioned, you want answers and you want to know what you can do today to fix it all. I asked Jocey to be on the show today because 1) It gets lonely sometimes flying solo and 2) I wanted a little extra help to debunk some of the popular fertility legends that are out there. These urban legends, while none of them are harmful, and in fact they might help some people, they are not the best way to approach your fertility. OK, so we’re going to: Debunk the top 6 urban legends when it comes to TTC The alternatives and practical actions you can take instead. Links mentioned: Private Facebook Community

This week on Skepticality, Derek interviews Guy Harrison about his latest book, 50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True, a guide to help steer people away from bogus pseudoscience by offering alternative explanations to commonly held unfounded beliefs. Derek also sits down with the founders of the website The Odds Must Be Crazy, a site which highlights extraordinary stories submitted by people who claim to have experienced the supernatural (yet these experiences have perfectly natural explanations).
