Is religious belief a form of make-believe — and if so, what deeper truths might we be acting out? Neil Van Leeuwen joins Igor and Charles to explore the psychological roots of religion, the nature of belief, and how sacred values shape group identity. Igor reflects on the blurring line between religious and political convictions, Neil argues that religious credence operates more like imaginative play than factual belief, and Charles considers whether conspiracy theories might be filling the same social and psychological roles. If the MP for Ilam, Hamish Campbell, thinks he's going to get away with not saying anything more about his involvement with this underground religious group, then he's dreaming. It doesn't have an official name, but it's known as the “Two By Twos” and it's being investigated by the FBI and the police for child abuse. One of its former ministers here in New Zealand has admitted 55 child sex abuse charges over three decades against young boys and, from what I've seen, there are about 2,500 members in New Zealand. It's being reported that Hamish Campbell has hosted study meetings at his home in Christchurch – but he's neither confirming nor denying that. The thing about the home meetings is that the group doesn't have official buildings, and so they meet in people's houses. An interesting thing is this Christian organisation doesn't celebrate Christmas and Easter. And it separates itself from other Christian denominations. It's been around for a while too – it was founded in Ireland in 1897 and has been in New Zealand for about 120 years. Hamish Campbell has put out a statement, but he's going to need to do more than that. And then, once he's at least confirmed that he's involved and answers a few other basic questions, he should be left alone. Because if we're going to condemn Hamish Campbell for being involved with a religious group accused of abusing kids, then you may as well write off any politician connected to the Catholic Church, for example. Because I don't think it matters what religious beliefs MPs hold. I've never been bothered about Christopher Luxon being an Evangelical Protestant. I don't care about Simeon Brown being Baptist. And I think my lack of concern about that has been shown to be pretty well-founded. I haven't seen any evidence that Luxon and Brown's religious beliefs are determining their political decision-making. So here's what Hamish Campbell has said so far. You might have seen him on the news on TV being approached outside Parliament. He closed the door on the reporter, though, when she asked him about hosting study meetings at his home in Christchurch. After that report on the news, he sent our newsroom a statement, pretty much reiterating what he said on TV, but still saying nothing about hosting gatherings at his place. But he says he fully supports the guy who's calling the group out for abusing kids and that the police are the best people to investigate it. But here's the bit that shows that Hamish Campbell thinks he doesn't need to say anything more about it. In his statement, he says: “My wife and I are non-denominational Christians but my faith is separate from my role as a politician.” Campbell is a regular guest on Newstalk ZB's Politics Friday. He's a very smart guy, worked for about 20 years as a scientist, and he's a nice guy. He's not going to set the political world on fire, but nothing about him comes across as particularly creepy or weird. Getting a straight answer out of him can be a challenge. Which is why, when I saw him on the news last night, I thought he was true to form. But that's not serving him well on this occasion. He needs to front up, confirm he's involved, confirm whether he has meetings at his place or not, and confirm how much he knows about the abuse allegations. Then the people of Ilam can decide how much of an issue this is. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He shares his research findings, which challenge the common belief that Latter-day Saints are inherently more prone to toxic perfectionism than individuals from other religious backgrounds. He explains that while 12% of Latter-day Saint youth exhibit high levels of toxic perfectionism, this figure is lower than the 20% found among atheists and agnostics, suggesting that toxic perfectionism is a broader human tendency rather than a specific issue tied to religious beliefs. The conversation delves into the nuances of perfectionism, distinguishing between healthy striving for high standards and the detrimental effects of toxic perfectionism, which can lead to feelings of worthlessness and shame. Justin emphasizes the importance of fostering a secure attachment to God, which can mitigate feelings of toxic perfectionism. He highlights the role of parents and leaders in creating an environment of love and support, rather than shame, to help youth navigate their identities and self-worth. The episode also addresses the challenges faced by LGBTQ youth within religious contexts, advocating for a compassionate approach that maintains the value of religious teachings while providing necessary support. The conversation underscores the significance of identity and the need for leaders and parents to remind youth of their inherent worth as children of God, encouraging them to strive for high standards without the burden of toxic perfectionism. 01:41 - Introduction of Justin Dyer and Research Focus 02:56 - Exploring Toxic Perfectionism 03:41 - Research Intent and Methodology 05:12 - Understanding Toxic Perfectionism 06:48 - Healthy vs. Toxic Perfectionism 09:46 - Impact of Perfectionism on Identity 10:33 - Balancing Standards and Self-Worth 12:06 - The Role of Perfectionism in Religious Context 13:13 - Addressing Youth and Leadership Dynamics 14:03 - The Challenge of Leadership Messaging 16:44 - Data Insights on Toxic Perfectionism 20:06 - The Role of Religion in Mental Health 22:44 - Encouraging a Positive Gospel Experience 24:33 - Parenting and Toxic Perfectionism in Youth 27:01 - The Importance of Love in Parenting 28:51 - The Impact of Parental Relationships on Identity 30:41 - Navigating Adolescence and Identity 32:27 - The Dangers of Silent Suffering 34:13 - Encouraging Healthy Standards in Youth 36:36 - Addressing LGBTQ Dynamics in Religious Context 38:10 - The Importance of Individualized Support 40:06 - Adult Experiences with Toxic Perfectionism 42:29 - Building a Secure Relationship with God The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. This Day in Legal History: Last Quaker Executed for Religious Beliefs in USOn March 24, 1661, William Leddra was executed in Boston, becoming the last Quaker in the American colonies to be put to death solely for his religious beliefs. Leddra, a devout Quaker, had previously been banished from Massachusetts under the colony's anti-Quaker laws but returned in defiance of the order. His return led to his arrest, imprisonment in harsh conditions through the winter, and eventual execution by hanging on Boston Common. His death marked the culmination of a brutal period of religious persecution in Puritan-controlled Massachusetts, where Quakers were seen as heretical threats to civil and religious order.Between 1659 and 1661, four Quakers—Marmaduke Stephenson, William Robinson, Mary Dyer, and William Leddra—were executed under laws banning Quakers from the colony. Their trials and punishments drew condemnation from other colonies and even from England. Leddra's hanging, in particular, caught the attention of King Charles II, who soon after issued a royal order halting capital punishment for religious dissent in Massachusetts. This effectively ended the execution of Quakers in the colonies. The persecution stemmed from Puritan authorities' intolerance of dissent and fear of Quaker evangelism, which rejected formal clergy and embraced equality, pacifism, and direct spiritual experience. Quakers continued to face fines, whippings, and imprisonment, but the death penalty was no longer enforced. Leddra's martyrdom, like that of his fellow Friends, became a symbol of religious freedom's cost and the struggle for tolerance in early America. His execution helped galvanize early opposition to theocratic rule and contributed to evolving colonial attitudes toward religious liberty.Paul Weiss Chairman Brad Karp alleged in a firmwide email that rival law firms attempted to take advantage of the firm's vulnerability following a March 14 executive order from President Donald Trump. The order directed federal agencies to sever contracts with Paul Weiss clients, prompting the firm to negotiate a deal with Trump rather than pursue litigation. Karp expressed disappointment that instead of receiving support, competitors tried to poach both clients and attorneys during the turmoil. The deal Paul Weiss struck included backing off diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and committing $40 million to pro bono work aligned with Trump administration priorities. Karp stressed that the administration is not selecting or approving the firm's matters. He acknowledged internal backlash and intense emotions over the firm's course of action but maintained that litigation would have likely jeopardized the firm's future, even with a legal victory.Perkins Coie, targeted by a similar March 6 order, has chosen to sue and has already lost clients as a result. On March 21, Trump issued an additional executive order directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to sanction attorneys and firms pursuing what the administration deems frivolous or vexatious litigation against the government.Paul Weiss Chairman Accuses Rival Firms of Pursuing Clients (1)Law firm Paul Weiss defends deal with Trump as lawyers sound alarm | Reuters23andMe Holding Co. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri as it seeks to restructure and pursue a sale of the business. The move is intended to help reduce costs, address legal and lease obligations, and stabilize operations.Once valued at $3.5 billion after going public in 2021, the DNA testing company has since struggled financially. Court filings list $277.4 million in assets and $214.7 million in liabilities. Joe Selsavage has been named interim CEO. The board's special committee chair, Mark Jensen, expressed hope that the bankruptcy process will allow 23andMe to address its challenges more effectively.23andMe Starts Chapter 11 Process, Co-Founder Steps Down - BloombergAt a recent hearing, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg criticized Trump administration lawyers for being “intemperate and disrespectful” in filings related to a case blocking the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members. The administration used the rarely invoked 1798 Alien Enemies Act to justify removing alleged members of Tren de Aragua without immigration court orders. Boasberg issued a 14-day freeze on those deportations, questioning the administration's interpretation of the law and whether the individuals had any real opportunity to challenge their designation as gang members. The administration filed documents accusing Boasberg of a "judicial fishing expedition," prompting his public rebuke. Boasberg emphasized the importance of professional conduct in court and asked the Justice Department to explain by Tuesday whether it had violated his order by allowing two deportation flights to land in El Salvador after his ruling.Though Trump has said he would not defy court orders, the situation has raised constitutional concerns about executive overreach. Some deportees were reportedly refused by El Salvador's government for not fitting the criteria or being the wrong nationality or gender. Lawyers for the migrants argue the administration's reliance on the Alien Enemies Act could lead to broad and discriminatory applications.Judge in deportations case says Trump administration lawyers were 'disrespectful' | ReutersA U.S. federal judge in Chicago has approved a highly unusual class-action settlement against facial recognition firm Clearview AI that doesn't include an immediate cash payout for affected individuals. Instead, under the agreement, class members—estimated to number between 65,000 and 125,000—may receive a 23% equity stake in the company. This could eventually translate into monetary compensation if Clearview is sold, merges, or goes public. The lawsuit accused Clearview of violating Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by scraping billions of facial images from the internet and using them without consent. Clearview denied any wrongdoing. U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman called the settlement “novel” but fair, emphasizing that the equity share isn't speculative, given the company's estimated valuation of up to $225 million. Based on that figure, the fund could reach $51.75 million. As an alternative to equity, a court-appointed official may require Clearview to pay 17% of its post-settlement revenue in cash by 2027. The deal also drew criticism from 22 states and D.C., which argued that the plaintiffs' attorneys' fees—nearly 40% of the settlement value—were excessive. Coleman defended the fees, noting that such awards are typical in the 7th Circuit. The judge further noted that continuing the litigation would be complex, costly, and time-consuming, justifying the settlement's structure.US judge approves 'novel' Clearview AI class action settlement | Reuters This is a public episode. Has the US become a bad place to be a Christian? In a recent NY Times feature, writer Aaron Renn, who has been called the "Malcolm Gladwell of Conservative Christianity," claims that America has shifted into a "negative world" where Christianity is a social liability. In this episode, Mark and Kelly wrestle with this idea that Christianity is losing its cultural dominance in the US. We cover a range of topics such as the prevalence of Christianity (a recent PRRI study asserts that 2/3 of Americans identify as Christian), Christian nationalism, persecution, tolerance, inclusion, privilege and power, the response of Progressive Christians, and what it even means to be a Christian in the first place. The Impact of Atheist Critiques on Christian and LDS Beliefs In religious discussions, atheists often serve as impartial critics, highlighting inconsistencies in how Christians and Latter-Day Saints assess religious testimony. They point out that Christians may apply a double standard, questioning the testimonies of Latter-Day Saints' witnesses—who claim to have seen the angel Moroni and the golden plates—while accepting their own biblical accounts, such as the resurrection of Jesus, despite lacking similar firsthand evidence. This inconsistency prompts a reevaluation of evidential standards across different faiths. The debate further explores archaeological evidence, comparing the historical foundations of various religious texts. These conversations emphasize the need for consistent criteria when evaluating religious claims. Resources like scripture notes.com offer believers tools to enhance their scriptural study, encouraging a deeper engagement with these intricate theological debates. #ResurrectionEvidence #WesHuffScholar #JosephSmithPlates #AngelMoroni #LatterDaySaints #ChristianDebate #AtheistsPerspective ⏱️⏱️VIDEO CHAPTERS⏱️⏱️: 00:00:00 - Debate: Atheists vs Christians on Latter-Day Saints 00:03:35 - Eyewitness Accounts and Historical Evidence in Religion 00:07:06 - Comparing Witnesses: Book of Mormon vs Resurrection 00:10:41 - Analyzing Testimonies: Angel Moroni and Joseph Smith 00:14:20 - The Role of Eyewitnesses in Religious Beliefs 00:17:45 - Understanding Visions and Trances in Religious Contexts 00:21:21 - Historical Context: Witnesses of the Book of Mormon 00:24:56 - Critiques and Comparisons: Christian and Mormon Claims 00:28:33 - Evaluating Evidence: Gold Plates and Resurrection 00:32:28 - Scholarly Debates: Biblical and Mormon Texts 00:36:03 - Witness Testimonies: Consistency and Details 00:39:38 - Archaeological Evidence: Bible vs Book of Mormon 00:43:18 - Exploring Mesoamerican Archaeology and the Book of Mormon 00:46:55 - Anachronisms and Historical Validity in Scriptures 00:50:30 - Cultural and Historical Contexts of Ancient Civilizations 00:54:08 - Inference and Explanation in Archaeological Studies 00:57:37 - Comparative Analysis: Biblical and Mormon Narratives 01:01:21 - Scriptural Reliability: Testing the New Testament 01:04:50 - Conclusion: Faith, Evidence, and Religious Beliefs ⚡wardradio.com

As we approach the end of a uniquely painful year for the Royal Family, the King's trusted biographer, Robert Hardman, joins Damian Thompson to discuss the Monarch's faith. As Robert recently revealed in his updated biography of Charles III, the cancer-stricken King has been drawing solace from a Christian faith that has become increasingly explicit over the years. He still thinks of himself as the ‘defender of faith', but now also unapologetically uses his ancient title of ‘Defender of the Faith', meaning Christianity. Specifically, he is more attracted than ever to the traditions of the Orthodox Church into which his father was baptised. But, as Robert has revealed, the current Prince of Wales is emphatically not religious (unlike his wife, who is reported to be exploring her own spirituality in the wake of her own diagnosis). What will this mean when William eventually inherits the position of Supreme Governor of the Church of England? Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

Tonight, The Light Gate welcomes author, researcher and experiencer Kathleen Marden to the show! Kathleen Marden's insatiable interest in UFOs and ET contact began in 1961, when her aunt and uncle Betty and Barney Hill had a close encounter and UFO abduction in New Hampshire's White Mountains. As a family member, Kathleen gained firsthand knowledge of Betty's and Barney's UFO encounter on the day they arrived home and two days later she, her parents, and siblings visited the Hill's home. She has devoted years to painstaking investigation of the Hills' anomalous events and archival research on their UFO abduction case. As the trustee of Betty's estate, she selected files from Betty's personal archival collection for a permanent collection at the Milne Special Collections Library, UNH Library, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH. You will find her case study of the evidence in her book with Stanton Friedman, “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience” (Updated in 2021). Since 1991 she has volunteered for the Mutual UFO Network in various positions such as Director of Field Investigator Training and Founder/Director of MUFON's Experiencer Resource Team. Over a ten-year period, Kathleen expanded her ERT team from three members to forty-five trained, seasoned specialists and attracted PhD and MD psychological and research consultants. Additionally, she sat on the Edgar Mitchell Free Advisory Board. In this period, she worked on three studies on nearly 5,000 experiencers (Marden-Stoner, Edgar Mitchell FREE, MUFON ERT). She is presently working on the “Marden-Barton Survey of Religious Belief and Extraterrestrial Life,” which is available on her website. She has appeared as an on-camera commentator on fifty-five television and video productions. Additionally, she has spoken on innumerable radio shows and podcasts and has lectured across the United States and to audiences in foreign countries. She has authored and coauthored numerous books and articles in UFO magazines and journals. Two of her books are available in foreign languages. She is the recipient of two major awards (MUFON and the International UFO Congress), for her years of dedicated work. Her books also include, The Alien Abduction Files, Forbidden Knowledge, Extraterrestrial Contact, Science Was Wrong, Fact, Fiction and Flying Saucers, True Stories of Alien Abduction, Making Contact and more. Some of her co-writers include Denise Stoner and Stanton Friedman.
A Republican, a Democrat and an Independent walk into a podcast... We're on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/@politicsandreligion It would mean so much if you could leave us a review: https://ratethispodcast.com/goodfaithpolitics So glad to have joined the hosts of Faithful Politics, Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram, to discuss the election results and reflect on our concerns regarding Trump's second term. We explore the complexities of political identity, the importance of community, and the need for clear boundaries in political discourse. The conversation delves into the intersection of faith and politics (of course!), the impact of hyperbole in political conversations, and the responsibility of individuals in their media consumption. We emphasize the need for discernment and understanding in navigating the evolving landscape of religious beliefs and political affiliations. We also explore the intersection of Christianity and politics, discussing the historical context of Christianity as a religion of empire versus the teachings of Jesus. We reflect on the implications of political power, the potential for violence, and the importance of accountability in leadership. Amidst concerns about the current political climate, we express hope for the future and the role of the church in promoting positive change. The discussion also touches on the challenges of engaging with differing ideologies and managing fear and anxiety in a politically charged environment. 00:00 Introduction to Faithful Politics Live Show 04:11 Reflections on the Recent Election Results 07:56 Concerns About Trump's Second Term 12:05 The Role of Identity and Community in Politics 16:00 Defining Terms in Political Discourse 19:50 The Intersection of Faith and Politics 24:13 Hyperbole and Its Impact on Political Conversations 28:10 Agency and Personal Responsibility in Media Consumption 32:13 The Evolution of Religious Beliefs in Politics 46:53 The Religion of Empire vs. the Religion of Jesus 50:06 Concerns About Political Power and Violence 52:45 Reflections on Presidential Power and Accountability 01:01:41 Hope Amidst Political Uncertainty 01:10:00 Engaging with Challenging Ideologies 01:19:00 Managing Fear and Anxiety in Politics Let us know what you think. In this episode, Doug Stuart talks with Alex Nowrasteh of the Cato Institute, about both Nationalism and immigration. Nowrasteh recently debated The National Review's Rich Lowry on the topic of Nationalism, with Nowrasteh taking the opposing view. This conversation lends well to arguments against so-called "Christian" nationalism as well. Though Nowrasteh is not himself religious, he makes compelling points about the destructive nature of nationalism to religious belief. Since religious belief is generally good for society, the last thing we should want to do is destroy it through state-sanctioned compulsion. Immigration turns out to be a issue related to nationalism, given the motivations for stricter immigration rules stem from nationalistic tendencies.(Re-Mastered for Re-Issue.)Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com ★ Support this podcast ★
