NCAA Baseball Tournament Fayetteville Regional Predictions: Arkansas, Kansas, More

The Southeastern 16 crew of Graham Doty, Chris Lee and Jay Greeson looks at the field of four in the Fayetteville Regional and gives our picks. Arkansas is a legitimate national title contender. How will the Razorbacks structure their pitching? What kind of outing will they get from Zach Root or Landon Beidelschies, who are talented but not always consistent? Maybe the bigger questions are whether anyone can effectively pitch to the powerful Razorback lineup led by Brent Iredale, Cam Kozeal and the Aloy brothers, or go toe-to-toe with a number of power arms in the Razorback bullpen, which also has dependable veteran Will McIntyre, too. Kansas mashed 100 home runs, led by Jackson Hauge (19), Brady Ballinger (16), Brady Counsell (12) and Michael Brooks and Saywer Smith (nine each), with Ballinger posting a .363/.507/.693 batting line. Can a pitching staff led by Dominic Voegele and Cooper Moore handle enough innings for the Jayhawks to advance? Creighton comes in hot after winning a competitive Big East tournament. The Bluejays hit just 48 home runs but got on base at a .401 clip as a team and have arms in Dominic Cancellieri, Garrett Langrell and Matthew Aukerman who can make life difficult. North Dakota St. may be the weakest offensive team in the tournament, and hit just 29 home runs this year. The Bison will need good tournaments from Nolan Johnson, Danny Lachenmayer and others to pull an upset.

“To be a Jew is to know that because of who we are, because of our historical experience, we care for the other. This is really one of the great tensions of our moment. Of how to be eyes wide open to Israel's need for self-defense, and at the same time recognize the real suffering that's going on in Gaza and to know that we need to find a way to hold both of those together.” Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, spiritual leader of Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, explores the complexities of Jewish identity in a post-October 7th world in his new book, For Such a Time As This: On Being Jewish Today. In this conversation, he unpacks the tension between Israel's need for self-defense and the suffering experienced by Gazans and Israelis and the challenge of balancing empathy with vigilance. He also shares his personal journey to the rabbinate and what it means to live as a Jew in this pivotal moment. *The views and opinions expressed by guests do not necessarily reflect the views or position of AJC.  Sign up for AJC Global Forum: Register at AJC.org/GlobalForum2025 for the premier global Jewish advocacy conference of the year, in New York City, April 27-29 2025 Listen – AJC Podcasts: The Forgotten Exodus: with Hen Mazzig, Einat Admony, and more. Head to AJC.org/GlobalForum2025. Manya Brachear Pashman:   I've done quite a bit of soul searching in the 15 months since October 7. How do I grapple with the tragedy in Israel and Gaza and the hatred Jews face on American soil without scaring my children away from Judaism?  Then came our Temple's Purim spiel last spring. That story of Queen Esther's bravery, in some ways, helped. It was about that same time that Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, the spiritual leader at Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, picked up his pen and began to write his latest book, named for a line in Queen Esther's tale – For Such a Time As This: On Being Jewish Today. Rabbi Cosgrove is with us now. Rabbi, welcome to People of the Pod. Elliot Cosgrove:   Thank you. It's great to be here.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   So I have to tell you, rehearsals began for this year's Purim spiel as I was reading this book, which made it all the more powerful. What inspired you to write this? Elliot Cosgrove:   Well, for me, I draw wisdom from text, and I was trying to think of what would be an analogous moment for what we were going through as American Jews from the ancient text.  And for me, as you say, this is now on the cusp of Purim 2025, it was the story of Esther that we read. And in many of our synagogues, we have Purim spiels, where we act out the story, which is basically the story of a Jewish community of ancient Shushan who believed themselves to have it good, that they were comfortable in the diaspora. And the wicked decree of Haman came down and Esther, whose name actually means to hide, she hid herself, her Jewish identity in the king's palace, and believed that she was comfortable there.  When the decree came down, Mordechai, her uncle, by way of an emissary, sent a message to her. “Don't think yourself to be safe from Haman's decree. Who knows, if it was not for such a time as this that you've arrived at your station.” And I saw this as really the calling card of our moment that we all felt ourselves in the wake of October 7, Esther-like called to action. The trauma of October 7, but also the call to action, to step up to the moment, the needs of our people. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Tell us about your writing process. Elliot Cosgrove:   I buried myself in my writing from before dawn until mid-morning, and then I would hit a wall. And I didn't take a sabbatical. I actually went into my day job as a congregational rabbi. It was a very intense writing process and then in the course of about three to four months sent the manuscript off to the publisher. Manya, the thing about the book is it was very disorienting to write as the events were playing out, both in Israel and in the States. And one of the worries that I had that I spoke to the publisher about was, well, what if this becomes dated? You know, it was not journalism, but I was writing as the news was happening, and the good news and the bad news is that the themes that I pick up on: the trauma of Israel, the blurred line between anti-Zionism and antisemitism, how we balance empathy and vigilance, the question of the hostages, of thinking about a day after for Israel and the Palestinians, these questions are not only still relevant, but they're actually more pressing than ever. So unfortunately, the themes that I hit on in the book, very much present right now. Manya Brachear Pashman:   How did that writing process help you personally process what you were witnessing and experiencing as a Jew in America? Elliot Cosgrove:   I'll say this, that as a rabbi, I often see my job–someone calls, they've just gotten bad news in the hospital, a loved one has passed away. Or a happy thing, that their child has just gotten engaged, or they themselves have just become new parents. And people turn to clergy to get the first line of constructing the narrative of what it is they are experiencing.  And for me, there is something deeply personal and deeply pastoral about this book, because I feel like it's seeking, hopefully, to give the language to American Jews as to how to construct this new reality of a post October 7 existence, the jumble of emotions, of trauma, but also the emergence of Jewish identity, the likes of which we've never seen before, the argument for continued defense of Israel's right to self determination, as well as an assurance that the traumas of October 7 never happen again. And in the same breath to think actively about what does the day after look like. I think we're all searching for language for these and other tensions of our moment, and I'm hoping that the book is sort of a vocabulary builder for our time. Manya Brachear Pashman:   One word that you used many times in the book, and it stuck with me, just because maybe it's one of my favorite words, and that is empathy. And you used it in different chapters, different contexts. And I'm curious if you could share with the audience the role of empathy and how it is a guiding force, how it has been a guiding force since October 7. Elliot Cosgrove:   Empathy, both its presence and its absence, has been a subplot of this moment, because I think empathy is ingrained into the Jewish DNA. You open up the Passover Haggadah, and on the one hand, we know that we are vigilant against every generation a pharaoh arises to destroy us. We are guards up. We are a people who knows the importance of ancient hatreds, of being vigilant against them, and also the ring of fire that Israel sits in by way of Iran and its proxies.  I mean, Israel's in a very tight spot, and American Jewry is in a very tight spot. And at the same time, empathy is who we are. You were once a stranger in a strange land. Therefore you should know the heart of a stranger. To be a Jew is to know that because of who we are, because of our historical experience, we care for the other. And I think that this is really one of the great tensions of our moment of how to, you know, be eyes wide open to Israel's need to self defense, and at the same time recognize the real suffering that's going on in Gaza and and to know that we need to find a way to hold both of those together. That Israel needs to fight this war as if there's no tomorrow, and Israel has to fight this war with an eye to tomorrow, with the same ferocity that it prosecutes this war, it has to pursue a day after plan. And I think that somewhere along the way, it's the voices on the extremes who are speaking with the loudest megaphones. And the goal of this moment is to realize that we need to find a way to embrace both.  I think it was Fitzgerald who said the test of a great mind is the ability to hold two opposing ideas and retain the ability to function. I think the test of the Jewish community right now is the ability to hold both vigilance and empathy at the same time and retain the ability to move forward with hope. Manya Brachear Pashman:   And how can empathy help here on American soil, where we're facing protesters, we're facing all kinds of opposition and questions and hatred because of what's happening overseas. How do we use empathy here on American soil? Elliot Cosgrove:   First of all, it's hard. It's hard. When you are under attack, the last thing anyone wants to do is feel someone else's pain. When someone is calling me a colonialist oppressor, when someone is calling for the destruction of the Jewish state, something which is part and parcel to my identity, core to my very being – my initial instinct is not to inquire into how they feel and have empathy. My initial instinct is to have shields of self-defense, prioritize the needs of my people over anyone else's. I think that's a human thing to do.  And as long as the hostages are hostages, as long as Israel stands in a vulnerable position, I think we need to be eyes wide open to that, and then we need to breathe, and we need to remember what it means to be a Jew.  And we need to remember that it takes two to tango, and that if we are going to create a future whereby Jews and Palestinians can live side by side in safety and self determination, then we need to realize that there are two peoples worthy of realizing that dream, and that requires empathy, Manya. Manya Brachear Pashman:   You were not always that religious or observant of your religious tradition. Can you tell our audience how you became a rabbi? Elliot Cosgrove:   How long do we have? This is a big question, but, look as with any way we construct our realities and tell our origin stories, there are a million ways to tell it. The truth of the matter is, I am the grandson of a congregational rabbi, an orthodox rabbi. So to say that I had somehow strayed from the path is a little bit of an overstatement. But I will say that I grew up in a traditional Jewish background. I'm very proud of the home I grew up in, but when I went off to college, it was very much something I did, Judaism was something I did at home. And I can't say that my first few years at my alma mater at University of Michigan were known by way of my religious affiliations and commitments. And then I got a phone call my junior year of college, that a figure from my youth, a grandfather figure I never really knew. My grandparents had passed away, and he was a guy who used to sit next to us in synagogue and slip me up peppermint candy as the rabbi was about to start the sermon or come over for Passover Seders or Shabbat dinner, Mr. Gendun, and he had passed away. And I got the phone call. I said, What would Mr. Gendun want me to do? And I thought, maybe I'll say Kaddish.  So I called one of my Jewishy friends. I had never been inside the Hillel building up until that moment. And I called up one of my Jewishy friends and I said, What's, where's the Hillel? And they said, you're an idiot, Elliot. It's this huge building right on campus at Michigan. And I went in and I said my Kaddish, and I was getting up like it was the end of an airplane ride just to run back out to whatever my evening plans were.  And a man stood between me and the door, boxing me out, and I was trying to shimmy one way and the other. And he said, I notice you've never been here before. And he said, Well, I'm wondering if you'd like to come to Shabbat dinner. And I lied, truth be told, because I figure he didn't want to know about dollar pitcher night. And I said, I already have Shabbat plans. And he said, Well, do you have Shabbat plans next week? And I was caught in my tracks, and I said, No, and before I could say another word, he said, Good, then you'll come over for Shabbat dinner.  And that man was Michael Brooks, who was the Hillel Director of the Michigan Hillel. I went over to Shabbat dinner. I got involved in the Israel group. I was an editor of the student journal. I sat on the Hillel governing board. One thing led to the other, and I became a rabbi. But important [as] that story is obviously in my own religious formation and choice of vocation, is how it informs my own life and my own rabbinate. It's that ability to look around the room when you're in a class, a Jewish event, a service, and who's the person who looks a little out of place like they might have been there for the very first time, and just do that small human act of reaching out to them, and whether you're going to invite them to Shabbat dinner or not, but just to acknowledge their humanity, that has been the north star of my rabbinate ever since. We're all just human beings looking for a place to hang our hats. Manya Brachear Pashman:   You talk about empathy. I think empathy caught my attention every time you mentioned it in the book, because I think it's so key to journalism. It's such an important component of it. And then I think hospitality is such an important component to Judaism and to congregational life, Elliot Cosgrove:   Absolutely. Hospitality is something that is key to our text at the beginning of the Passover Seder. But hospitality is also a spiritual demeanor that we welcome people into our souls, into our presence, into our life. Hachnasat Orchim in Hebrew, this idea that there's always space within our souls, within our hearts.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   Having had such an important turning point on a university campus, how did you interact with, council, university students during this time, as they were facing such pressures and such opposition, crushing opposition during this past year and a half? Elliot Cosgrove:   So there's a chapter about that in the book. It's really the part of the book that I think has struck a nerve, and appropriately so, because I'm the father of four college age or thereabouts children.  And that story I tell about Maya, and Maya is a young woman who, I joke, shares half a brain with my own college age daughter. She's grown up in my household, and she is what you or I might identify as a non Zionist Gen zer, and she approached me and perhaps reproached me for having a Israeli flag on the pulpit, for doing the prayer for the State of Israel in the midst of the service, and said, you know, and she grew up in the Jewish Day School. She grew up going to Jewish summer camp. She did gap year programs in Israel.  Not a small amount of money has been invested in the Mayas of the world, and she herself is asking whether or not her liberal, American Jewish self can be simpatico with the policies of this or that Israeli government, because they don't speak for her sensibility. And to this question of empathy, I think the first move one makes in any such situation is to try to understand where the other person is coming from.  And I think a 21, 22, 23 year old is coming of age in a moment of time where the only Prime Minister they know of is Bibi Netanyahu, who either is or is beholden to the most right-wing elements of Israeli society. The only policies they know of the Israeli government are an expansionist policy in the West Bank, which has precluded the possibility of a two state solution. The only paradigm they have is an Israel which is a Goliath to the Palestinian David, this is their reality.  You can't blame someone for the time into which they are born. I can pick apart and engage in a dialog on what's true and what's not true. But to tell someone that their reality is not, their reality is is not, you know, a move that one can make. And by the way, if they're during the time of the judicial reform, and to this day, there are 1000s of Israelis marching on the streets on a Saturday night protesting the Israeli government as an expression of their love of country.  To tell the Mayas of the world, a college age student today, that they are treif, they are beyond the bounds of Jewish discourse, for doing the exact same thing is just an argument that doesn't hold water anymore. And so the the the goal here, Manya, is to engage with their questions, to listen intently, to prompt that young mind to come up with their own answers for the defense and the well being of the Jewish people, given the harsh realities that Israel faces, and also to make room for their very real question. So I look long on the Maya generation. It's actually a controversial moment within the organized Jewish community –do we write them off, do we not write them off? I think they're our future, and I think we do terrible damage to ourselves if we write them off. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Because it is such a time as this. We have to pay attention to the context, right, and to where we are in history, without losing sight of history. Elliot Cosgrove:   Look, it's very easy to take pot shots from the left and from the right. You know where this brave space is. The brave space is standing in the middle and dignifying the claims and counterclaims of both sides, and knowing that real leadership is trying to keep our people together. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Your book does such a beautiful job of inspiring that sense, sparking those, those right emotions in my head. So thank you so much for writing it. And I encourage all of our listeners to pick up a copy of Rabbi Cosgrove's book–For Such a Time as This: On Being Jewish Today. It is full of challenges, and I think that the challenge is worth facing and taking on. Thank you. Elliot Cosgrove:   Thank you so much, Manya.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Mike Elk, founder of the Payday Report, to discuss the recent news out of Brazil that former President Bolsonaro has been indicted. Then, they speak with Jacob Silverman, co-author of his latest book Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, and writer at the AM Quickie newsletter, to discuss Trump's nomination of Howard Lutnick to be Commerce Secretary, and his associations with crypto. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's destruction of Lebanon, Israel's sanctioning of Haaretz, the Biden-Trump transition, Trump's developing cabinet, Trump's attacks on trans people, and Trump's plan of attack on Jack Smith, before diving a little deeper into the growing tension between the US-Israel alliance and the international order upholding the ICC's warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu. Mike Elk then joins, diving right into the major developments in Brazil's criminal case over the far-right (and Bolsonaro-administration-) backed coup and recently-revealed assassination in the wake of Lula da Silva's reelection in 2022, with the indicting of a massive portion of Bolsonaro's military advisors occurring last week in the leadup to the indictment of Bolsonaro himself this week, all at the hands of the Brazilian Supreme Court. Elk then walks Sam and Emma through the development of the investigation, with incredibly poor criminal operations UNRELATED to the coup allowing the Court to easily swing snitches over to their side, before stepping back to unpack the evolution of the fascist attacks on Lula and the Brazilian left, from the corrupt imprisonment of Lula and his successor, through the backlash to said political imprisonment, and into Bolsonaro's coup attempt in 2023. Mike expands on Bolsonaro's clear connection to the 2018 assassination of Rio de Janeiro city council member Marielle Franco, before wrapping up by noting the stunning impact this entire affair (and, more importantly, the Court's willingness to act on it) has had on completely decapitating the threat of the Brazilian far-right. Jacob Silverman then walks Sam and Emma through the major influx in crypto spending in the 2024 election cycle, despite the industry's recent stutters, and touches on the potential issue of an industry dominated by criminal conspiracy and transactions shaping US politics, before zeroing in on the particular role of one Tether, perhaps the largest cryptocurrency on the international level and a central investment of incoming Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. After expanding on the incredibly shady, and fully not evidence-backed dealings of Tether, Jacob wraps up by unpacking the ultimate goal of the crypto industry in completely liberating the movement of money, freeing it from the shackles of absurd concepts like “fraud” and government regulations, and the role the Trump administration can play in making this goal a reality. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Milo Yiannopoulos talk gay sex, not having sex, Laura Loomer, straight sex, abstinence, and definitely not being gay with Tim Pool, before chatting with Guy from Massachusetts and Carrie from New York about certain similarities between Milo and one Nick Fuentes. BRB Forever presses Sam and Emma on the language around Israel's genocide in Gaza, Walt from Wyoming unpacks Progressives' major wins in Wisconsin, and Jordan Peterson teases out the conservative ideology behind the notoriously anti-fascist Lord of the Rings, plus, your calls and IMs! Episode Transcript: Manya Brachear Pashman:   Amid the recent rise of antisemitism and the unease that brings, we are marking the month of May as Jewish American Heritage Month. This is a time when so many of us in the Jewish community are feeling misunderstood, unwelcome, and confronting hatred. But the American Jewish experience is so much more than standing up to hatred and bigotry. Over the past 370 years, Jewish Americans have served in government, the military, they've won Nobel Prizes, headed universities and corporations, advanced medicine, the arts and justice. Here to celebrate Jewish American Heritage is AJC's CEO Ted Deutch.  Ted, welcome back to People of the Pod. Ted Deutch:   Thank you very much. Manya Brachear Pashman: Ted, you began serving in Congress in 2010 A few years after a Jewish American Heritage Month was first proclaimed in 2006 Can you tell us a little bit of the history behind Jewish American Heritage or what we like to call JAHM. Ted Deutch:   Well, Jewish American Heritage Month has been around for almost 20 years. Congress passed a resolution that was led by my former colleague Debbie Wasserman Schultz to acknowledge the important contributions that Jewish Americans have made throughout our history. And in 2006, President George W. Bush designated the month of May to be Jewish American Heritage Month, and there have been presidential proclamations every year since. This year, President Biden proclaimed May to be Jewish American Heritage Month and outlined the history of the American Jewish community and the fact that Jewish American culture is so inextricably woven into the fabric of our country. He talked about the importance of Jewish American suffragettes and activists and leaders marching for civil rights and women's rights and voting rights. He talked about the contributions of, of Jewish men and women in uniform and on the Supreme Court. And throughout multiple administrations. It's an acknowledgement that we are really forming an important part of the fabric of this country. And we have to spend time thinking about that, particularly in a moment when so many are really taking positions and saying things that challenge our contributions that are made, and that really put so many of us in the Jewish community on edge, make us feel at risk. This is an important opportunity to really stand proudly as Jewish Americans. Manya Brachear Pashman:   You know, during the month of March, Women's History Month, I always discover a new role model, a particularly amazing woman that I never knew existed. And the same is often true during Jewish American Heritage Month. But in reverse, I discovered that people whom I always thought to be amazing, and heroes in my book are Jewish. Do you have heroes growing up who you discovered were, or maybe you already knew, were Jewish? Ted Deutch:   It's interesting. Our community is, I think, always looking to elevate those from our community who make a meaningful impact in society.  I remember when I learned about Eddie Jacobson, that was one of those moments for me. Eddie Jacobson was a friend, business partner of Harry Truman. And, he played such a really interesting role during the war when, when he was focused on the plight of the Jews in Europe. His friendship led him to go advocate with then-Senator Truman to urge the us to do more for the Jews who are being discriminated against, harassed. Ultimately those who were being sent to concentration camps. That was a relationship that he had, and was able to use to help strengthen his own community.  And what he did that I think was even more important than that, was following the war when he understood that there was this opportunity for the rebirth of the modern state of Israel. He went to urge his, again, his friend, then-President Truman, to to meet with Haim Weitzman, the leader of the Zionist movement, and President Truman was reluctant, but because of that relationship, that that personal relationship, Eddie Jacobson was able to convince the President to take that meeting, which then ultimately led to the recognition of the State of Israel by the United States just minutes after it declared, Israel declared its independence, being the first country to to recognize Israel. He's a hero in the history of the Jewish people. He played a really important role, I think, in the history of the country. And I think most people had no idea or may never have heard of him.  There are also the heroes within the Jewish community that in Jewish American Heritage Month we have the chance to think about people who impacted us, impacted the way we work to strengthen the Jewish community who maybe aren't famous at all. When I think about the people, the Jewish leaders that I was privileged to know when I was a college student. Our [University of Michigan] Hillel director, Michael Brooks, and the professors who helped guide us where, at a moment years ago when we were facing antisemitism. When the student newspaper ran this series of outrageously anti-Zionist, antisemitic editorials, unfortunately, sounding familiar, the support from these heroic adults, for those of us who were students, to go out and to hold rallies and to protest outside of the student newspaper, to make sure that people understood what the facts were–that kind of heroism really resonates because it's a reminder of what we can do for young people now at a moment when they're looking to others in the community to help support them. It really carries right through to, to the work that I get to do every day, that I'm so privileged to do and, and really the ways that all of us can work behind the scenes to help lift up the voices of Jewish young people today. Manya Brachear Pashman:   It's interesting that you kind of bring up who the heroes were for yourself when you were younger. I mean, I'm sure I'm sure you've been to baseball games, Yankees, Cubs, Mighty Mussels, whoever your team might be. Ted Deutch:   The Mighty what? Manya Brachear Pashman:   The Mighty Mussels, they're in Fort Myers, Florida. It's also the name of my son's baseball team. They're named after minor league teams. But I'm sure you've been to these games where the announcer calls the heroes to stand, be recognized by the crowd. And everyone knows that the announcer is calling on veterans, right members of the military, first responders, and they are undoubtedly heroes. But in those moments, I often wish they would list all the many types of heroes when they do that. The doctors, the nurses, the teachers, God bless them.  How do you define hero? Ted Deutch:  Well, you're exactly right, and what those moments feel like. And first of all, I think it's important that we acknowledge injury, Jewish American Heritage Month, the contributions of Jewish Americans throughout our nation's history, in defending our country, we've talked before, I mean, I talk a lot about my father, who graduated from high school and enlisted in the Army to go fight the Nazis, and earned a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge. And all of the people like him who, whether it was in World War Two, or Korea or Vietnam, right on through the wars, in the Middle East wars in Afghanistan and, and in Iraq, the contributions from Jewish Americans who were proudly Jewish, as they served our country, those are really important to remember and every time at a sporting event where they ask the heroes to rise, I think it's important to think about that, you know, down here in South Florida, when they do that, at sporting events, it's not unusual, especially if they're recognizing someone from World War Two or the conflict in Korea in particular, it's just not that unusual for the veterans to be Jewish Americans. And there's always an extra amount of pride that you feel when they make those announcements. I do think it's important to think about all that we've contributed in defense of the country.  But you're right. There are so many people who are heroes, who serve our country in other ways. We had a moment during COVID, where I think everybody recognized the heroism of our first responders, our doctors and nurses and people went in when COVID was raging, and people knew so very little about it. And every day, they went to work to take care of people and help save lives. And there was that moment. And I think it's important that we have more moments like that.  It's true for police officers and firefighters and first responders. Again, too often, I think we sort of take for granted the work that so many people do, putting themselves out in service of others.  And you mentioned teachers, there's just no question that the contributions of teachers and so many Jewish teachers among them, who have committed their lives to helping prepare the next generation, to help them become citizens in our country and understand our history and learn what they need to be able to thrive in our society and in their lives. They're doing an incredible service, and should be recognized as well.  And so when we think about Jewish American Heritage Month, look, I'm all for thinking about, getting back to athletes. I'm all for thinking about Alex Bregman from the Astros. And for those of us who are hockey fans, it's the glory days for Jews in hockey, and Zach Hyman and the Hughs and others, but it's the people that we've not heard of whose names we don't know, who come from our own families that we need to hold up and think about as the real heroes for the work they do every day in their lives.  Manya Brachear Pashman:  It has been seven months now, since terrorists attacked Israel on October 7. And I'm curious if in your opinion, the last seven months have changed what it means to be a hero, especially in the Jewish world. Ted Deutch:  Well, there are all kinds of people in the Jewish world right now who are doing heroic work since 10/7 in ways that either weren't necessary, or were unappreciated before 10/7. Because the challenge There's so much greater.  We were just talking about people who served the country. IDF soldiers are heroes and what the IDF has done since 10/7 to defend Israel in the face of the horrific attacks by Hamas is heroic, and the loss of life is painful. And so even as we mourn those soldiers who have been killed, we have to take a moment to appreciate the heroism.  But there are others, the hostage families who traveled to New York and Washington and around the world and we at AJC are so privileged to work with so many of them to help give them voice and make sure that they're heard. But as they struggle now, for more than 200 days that their loved ones have been held captive deep below Gaza, they continue to go out and advocate for the release of their loved ones. And to help people understand that these are real people, and we feel like we've gotten to know them. And that's because of the heroic actions that their loved ones have taken.  There are people in social media who have become heroes for every day just going to battle against the lies and misinformation on so many of the social media outlets. In the United States, on college campuses right now, what we've seen from so many students, whether they're on our Campus Global Board, high school students from our LFT program, but wherever they are, the ability for students to stand up and to say, in the face of these protests that are often directed at the Jewish community, the language is horrific, and it is dangerous and unacceptable.  And in the face of all of that. the number of students and young people who are standing up saying, I am a proud Jew who loves Israel. And I'm going to fight back in all of the ways I can to make sure that people know who we are, to make sure that they understand the truth of what's happening now.  There are so many young people now who are doing heroic things, and will continue to do heroic things, I have no doubt, for the rest of their lives. And I think it's important to stop to acknowledge that. I know these days, it's not popular to talk about heroes in politics. But if you pause for a moment and think about what Richie Torres has done, as a member of Congress, a progressive member of Congress, standing firmly in support of Israel and Israel's right to defend itself and speaking with a moral clarity that we wish others could follow. Ritchie's a hero. John Fetterman, staring down the protesters day after day, the way that he does, is a hero.  At a time when there is so little bipartisanship, the fact that Speaker Johnson decided to move forward with the aid package for Israel and Ukraine and Taiwan with humanitarian aid and got that done, we should be celebrating his contributions.  There are a lot of people that we really need to stop and be grateful for. And obviously, they're not all Jews. But it's a moment when the Jewish community, as we're thinking about our own heroes, should pause to be grateful for those who have really been helpful to the community.  Manya Brachear Pashman:  Now you've just mentioned a lot of the people who've had a high profile since October 7. Any ordinary or overlooked heroes that we might not think to recognize? Ted Deutch:  Being a parent of a Jewish child shouldn't be heroic. And yet, seeing parents find more ways for their kids to really understand who we are, as a community find more ways for them to be involved, by more ways for them to learn, especially after 10/7, really teaching more and more about who we are as Jews, to our kids, that's heroic.  I don't think it should be heroic to be a rabbi, or a Hebrew school teacher, or someone who works at a day school or in the Jewish community. But in this post 10/7 world, that work in so many instances is heroic, because of all of the baggage that comes with, with the protesters, with the challenges to the community, with the things that we see on social media, to get up every single day, and to be there as leaders in the Jewish community in synagogues, in schools, in the organizational world. As we prepare to get ready for camp season. All of these Jewish professionals are doing heroic work, and the community is so much better and stronger for it and for them. Manya Brachear Pashman:  How did October 7th change you and your approach to either public service or service to the Jewish people? Ted Deutch:  First, there's an urgency with which I try to meet every single day, since 10/7, I think it's something that we all feel. I think a lot about the way that we felt on 10/7, that morning when we were learning about what happened and the fragility of Israel. And the notion that the Jewish community and Israel are so inextricably linked became more powerful than ever, and that both felt at risk that day and the days after. It's just required a constant and urgent focus on trying to make sure that people understand what's actually happening, putting out meaningful and factual information and pushing back against false narratives, something that we've tried so hard to do, literally since 10/7. Hlping people understand that the protests didn't start when IDF soldiers marched into Gaza to defend Israel and Jewish people. They started after Hamas slaughtered 1,200 people on October 7. These were protests in support of this vile terrorism.  And helping people understand that when Iran launched close to 350 missiles and drones, it was part of an ongoing effort through Iran, with Iran to the head, but that includes Hamas and Hezbollah, and the militia in Iraq and the militia in Syria, and the Houthis, and others throughout the region, all to target Israel, again, urgently making that clear every single day.  So there's an urgency, there is a passion to make sure that the commitment in the community, the way that people have stood up and said, You know what, there are a lot of things that are important, but man our community needs, it needs us to focus on ourselves. That ultimately, the only people that we know that we can count on are the Jewish people.  And yes, we're going to continue to work with our friends and allies and partners. That's important. But working hard to retain the sense of unity within the Jewish community is also something that was never really a priority. But now that we've seen what that unity looks like, and what it means when we all stand together, in the face of this Hamas evil in the face of these protesters celebrating terrorism, and calling for the destruction of Israel, that's a unity that we have to desperately try to hold on to, and to bring people together around, not just while this war is going on, but on into the future. Manya Brachear Pashman:  Ted, thank you so much for joining us. Ted Deutch:  I hope people will use this as an opportunity to share their own stories, their family stories, the stories of the people that they know deserve some attention for what they've done to strengthen America.  And I hope that they'll go out and they'll tell the story and they'll get others to listen. Our contributions to America have been so rich and varied and instrumental to the kind of country that we have and the kind of country that we know we need to continue to be. These are stories that everyone needs to hear. So I very much appreciate the opportunity.

Delve into the heart of Michael's approach to politics, one that wove together the threads of diverse ideologies into a tapestry of progressive thought and action. We reminisce about his contributions, reflecting on the need for unity in contemporary leftist circles and the void left by his untimely departure.Navigating the murky waters of left-wing foreign policy, we grapple with the complexities that movements like Bernie's 2016 brought to the fore, blending political ideologies into a vibrant coalition. From the decline of socialist internationalism to the bipartisan consensus on American military power, we confront the challenge of crafting a coherent foreign policy that speaks to our global responsibilities. Brooks' nuanced perspective on these issues reminds us of the intricate dance between domestic and international politics, and how critical it is to maintain this balance for the sake of a progressive global vision. In a world where domestic and international fronts are inextricably linked, we scrutinize the American Left's approach to global politics. How would a socialist United States shape its relations with powers such as the EU or respond to anti-socialist governments? We consider the role of religion in leftist movements, looking at historical alliances, the spiritual underpinnings of activism, and the transformative power of religious discourse in forging paths toward social change. It's a special All Calls Casual Friday! Call into the show at 646-257-3920! Sam and Emma also talk to Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective, about what's next in the fight to maintain student debt forgiveness as the Supreme Court gears up to rule on President's Biden's plan. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Supreme Court's recent decision impacting native sovereignty, peace in Ukraine, Iowa's abortion ban, labor action, and climate change, also diving into Boris Johnson's exit from Parliament and the MASSIVE updates on the Biden crime family (turns out there's still not much). Nathan from Kansas City dives into the bigger picture of pistol brace legislation, Kaley from Boston discusses the relationship between queer acceptance and legislation, and Mike from Troy takes on the absurd lack of comprehension Matt Walsh and Jordan Peterson have on the topic of trans medical issues. Sam and Emma also listen to JP's Antifanalysis, Eric from Pittsburgh brings up criterion censorship, and Dave from Charlottesville explores the dem-ification of NC and the impact it has on local corruption. Astra Taylor then walks through the state of Biden's student debt relief, why his admin insisted on using the HEROES Act, and why other avenues remain open to him. They also assess the impending Supreme Court cases on the issue, and explore what Biden actually would be open to. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Anonymous about the world of political consulting, Jake from Rhode Island discusses the impact of a local school board takeover, and Steven from Mississippi explores the relationship between fundamentalist religion and the rejection of non-religiously-affiliated welfare. DJ Cold Case clears up some of yesterday's Discord drama, Michael Knowles is offended by a flag, and Billy from Sacramento dives into her experiences transitioning, and the lack of understanding around hormone therapy, plus, your calls and IMs! 3113 - “Deep State” vs Whistleblowers; AMLO: A Leftist Success Story? w/ Kerry Howley, Edwin F. Ackerman

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She talks to Kerry Howley, feature writer at New York Magazine, to discuss her recent book Bottoms Up and the Devil Laughs: A Journey Through The Deep State. Then, she is joined by Edwin Ackerman, assistant professor of sociology at Syracuse University, to discuss his recent piece on Mexican politics in the New Left Review entitled "The AMLO Project". First, Emma runs through Thursday's headlines, tackling the Supreme Court's decision regarding native sovereignty, and Lindsay Graham's bold appearance on Hannity to wish Donald Trump a very happy birthday. Kerry Howley then dives right into her work exploring the extreme results of the loss of personal identity in the age of the Internet, working through the story of Reality Winner, a 25-year-old whistleblower whom the US Government painted as a deep-state terrorist. First, she and Emma step back to look at how she became contracted with the NSA, where she stumbled upon a document suggesting Russia had engaged in election interference in 2016, before parsing through her delivering of said document to the Intercept, where the information was completely mishandled resulting in the full force of the law coming down on Winner. Next, Howley dives into the project of the prosecution to turn Winner into a radical anti-American terrorist, largely by relying on factors of her life directly related to her work with the government, before she and Emma explore how this story is reflected in the backlash to various US whistleblowers, as well-meaning citizens, feeling civic obligation, are turned into anti-social monsters by the very government look misconduct forced their hand in the first place. Wrapping up, they look at the neoliberal nature of precarity as a central factor in putting all of us in similarly difficult positions. Edwin Ackerman then walks through the rise of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, current President of Mexico, from a surprise left-wing mayoral victory in Mexico City to a 30-point victory in the 2018 election. After stepping back to explore his political evolution and party affiliation, Emma and Ackerman tackle the success of his recently established MORENA party, and the pro-labor reforms his government has implemented, also touching on the evolution of his base, and addressing the allegations of authoritarianism from certain neolib outlets. Wrapping up, they explore the relationship between corruption, populism, and left-wing politics, and how AMLO's regime has begun to change that. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they tackle the generative language model in sheep's clothing that is AI, celebrate the success of Kari Lake's new single, and watch Crowder discuss parental and marital abuses seemingly unrelated to his own actions. Dave from Jamaica and the MR Crew reminisce on some of their favorite conservative “punk” anthems, Gerrard from Florida discusses discussion of religion, and Glenn Grothman finally lends a voice to the voiceless (gas stoves), plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Peter Shamshiri, or Law Boy on Twitter, co-host of the 5-4 Podcast, to discuss some of the recent big decisions coming out of the Supreme Court, and what's still left on the docket. Sam and Emma start off by taking another look at some of the reactions to the big Trump indictment prior to his arraignment this afternoon in Miami. They include Alan Dershowitz, who famously didn't doubt the severity of the indictment (he did, days ago), discussing how bad this looks for Trump, and Speaker McCarthy going with the "bathroom doors lock" defense for why Trump would have multiple boxes of classified documents in his bathroom in Mar-A-Lago. Then Peter joins the show to discuss whether he'd go to bat for Trump in Florida since he apparently is still looking for lawyers, but then more seriously dives into the shocking Milligan decision, where Justices Kavanaugh and Roberts sided with the liberals to preserve the Voting Rights Act. Sam, Emma and Peter then discuss the Talevski case, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's first majority opinion, that, via a narrow ruling, preserved the structure of Medicaid. They then look to the future as to how the court might view the affirmative action and student debt decisions that are still before them, and if there are any other cases that Peter has his eye on (keep track of Brackeen v. Haaland, a case involving the Indian Child Welfare Act.) And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew discuss Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani wanting to shove Hunter Biden's laptop up Bill Barr's ass, James Comer DEFINITELY having something from that FBI form him and Chuck Grassley think will indict the "Biden Crime Family", Tulsi Gabbard's big announcement that she's BACK in the military (heading up the PsyOps division, incidentally), the big New Yorker piece about Bari Weiss's OTHER sham venture, plus, your calls & IM's! It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the subpoena of Donald Trump, E. Jean Carroll's new charges against Trump, a vehicular strike on the White House, the slow acceptance of greedflation theory by economic elites, and Ron DeSantis' police, also tackling Kevin McCarthy and Joe Biden agreeing on their desire to potentially agree to negotiate an agreement on the debt ceiling negotiation. Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the absurd coverage of the greed factor in inflation, the lingering desire to make it seem like a fringe factor, and how to push the Fed to actually tackle this issue. They then parse through Minnesota's incredible progress with a trifecta and a one-seat Senate majority, walking through the history of the DFL, the incredible pro-labor legislation they're passing, and the importance of actually using power when you have it (*cough* national Democrats *cough*). And in the Fun Half: MR has some technical troubles (totally unrelated to the gerontocratic control of the studio), they watch Newsmax talking heads demean Fox for following the same human rights laws that they – as residents of NYC – also must follow, and Ren from Oregon dives into the private debt issue in the US. Mike from Portland solves Sam's computer issues, William from Portland reflects on the legacy of Michael Brooks, and Greg from Beaumont dives into tacit collusion, before Brian from Germany parses through some crazy attacks on mutual aid activism in North Carolina. Mississippi schools crack down on any non-normative gender expression, and Tusli runs to the defense of killer Daniel Penny, plus, your calls and IMs!
