A conversation with Henry Oliver, author of 'A Second Act', exploring the concept of late bloomers. Transcript here. Oliver elaborates on societal pressures, hidden talents, and how these impact individual successes at various life stages, advocating for a broader recognition of potential beyond conventional timelines. The dialogue includes themes such as the significance of networks, the role of luck, and the historical context of late blooming, challenging prevailing notions of talent and achievement. Following this, the conversation delves into the philosophical contributions of John Stuart Mill, particularly focusing on his expansion of utilitarianism and its inadvertent influence on contemporary moral behaviors like vegetarianism. It contrasts Mill's stance on liberty and value measurement with other philosophers and highlights the importance of engaging with diverse perspectives for personal growth. The chat connects Mill's philosophies to present-day issues.  We end on Henry's advice: the importance of personalized approaches to absorbing content, seeking expertise, the application of tailored advice over generic guidance; and to ignore those who do not have recent advice experience. On Hidden Talents and Societal Barriers: "So in the case of someone just happens to emerge later, and in the case of someone has been held back, I would call that hidden both times. Because very often when you've been held back by your circumstances, people like actually cannot see your talents. And so they are hidden, not in the sense that you've kept them in, or you were scared, or whatever, but in the sense that, you could have put it on your t-shirt and people wouldn't have realized." On Overcoming Historical Bias and Recognizing Talent: "And obviously historically, very often that was to do with if you were a woman, if you were a person of color people just aren't going to, people literally aren't going to take that seriously. But that, to me, is interesting, it's an interesting demonstration of the fact that, You can be very confident that you know how to find talent, and that you know who's a good chap and who would be good at this job, and be completely blind to what is right in front of you." We kicked things off with a discussion about a political video that's giving off some serious "Handmaid's Tale" vibes. The eerie music, the dramatic speeches, and the over-the-top patriotic sentiments had us drawing parallels to Gilead and questioning the state of our union. From politics, we shifted to a more personal note, recounting our recent experiences and the aftermath of a wild night out. We reminisced about the good old days of partying and how age is starting to take its toll on our ability to recover from a night of debauchery. We also discussed the strange state of affairs in New York City, where an increased police and National Guard presence in the subway system has us feeling like we're living in a dystopian novel. The deployment of troops and the requirement for bag searches without any clear threat has us questioning the motives behind these security measures. In lighter news, we chatted about our recent vacation and how jumping back into work feels like we never left. We laughed about the absurdities of daily life and the never-ending cycle of work and brief holidays. As we continued, we delved into the peculiar world of celebrity behavior, specifically focusing on Amanda Bynes and her recent announcement about wearing wigs. We pondered what happened to the former child star and expressed our desire for a documentary to uncover the truth behind her transformation.Lastly, we wrapped up with a critique of bizarre fashion choices from the past, like the fox stole, and how these items are still somehow making a comeback. It's a mix of horror and humor as we try to make sense of why anyone would want to wear a dead animal around their neck.Remember, you can always reach out to us at 614-721-5336 or visit our website at www.notwellpodcast.com. The stereotypical midlife crisis looks like a man leaving his wife and kids, buying a sports car, and shacking up with a younger lover. What causes this phenomenon? And why does it mostly seem to impact men? In this episode, I argue that the men most at risk for midlife crises are the rule-following and duty-conscious sort, who have spent most of their conscious lives acting responsibly. To avoid this outcome, it's important for men to practice what I call "creative selfishness," and to enjoy the fruits of their labor along the way. Find out what's stopping you from feeling more beautiful:  free mini-session Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt less than beautiful? Perhaps you've spent hours trying to perfect your look, running from one shopping trip to the next for that 'magic' makeover. You may have even considered plastic surgery - anything, just to try and feel good about yourself. But despite all these efforts, do you still feel like something is missing? If so, it might be time to take a look inside yourself instead of just searching externally - because no matter what kind of makeover we can offer; true beauty starts within. In this podcast episode, we'll explore how self-love is key in unlocking our inner beauty - and step away from being reliant on external factors that just don't last. The journey to feeling beautiful is a process. We can tend to the outside all we want and still not feel beautiful on the inside. Understanding why we can't make ourselves beautiful by changing our appearances and delving into what lies beneath the surface is how true beauty blossoms. It's not about having it all together, but rather it's allowing ourselves to think deeply about why we don't feel good enough so that this can be addressed head-on. Taking accountability for our internal dialogue and its impact on our day-to-day life is a powerful tool for reshaping our thoughts around beauty. By creating a plan to love yourself more, we are taking an active role in feeling beautiful from within. If you're ready to make some real changes today, schedule a free mini-session today.

Three weeks later, I got a letter from her saying, 'Oh my god, I can't believe this. I'm myself again, thank you so much.' That caught my attention because this was a dramatic result. It happened with so little time."Women who undergo midlife crises are often punctuated with the unpleasant effects of menopause. John Stuart Mill's midlife crisis came at 20 when he realized that if he got what he desired he still wouldn't be happy. Art and poetry (and maybe love) saved the day for him. In this week's episode, philosopher Kieran Setiya of MIT talks about his book Midlife with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. Setiya argues we can learn from Mill to help deal with the ennui to which so many midlifers succumb--along with regrets for roads not taken and wistfulness for what could have been. Setiya argues that a well-lived life needs fewer projects and more pursuits that don't have goals or endpoints. He explains why past mistakes can turn out to be good things and how lost chances can help us appreciate the richness of life.

The Language of Mindfulness - A Podcast on Conscious Communication by Brett Hill

Billy Lahr, one of the hosts of the popular Mindful Midlife Crises podcasts, joins me in this funny and light-hearted yet serious episode where we discuss such topics as his recent midlife crises world tour involving paddleboarding, geomancy, and "pizza dough as a metaphor for living outside your comfort zone". (PS I am totally stealing that pizza dough metaphor Billy ;) He has some great insights ranging from "why would I end my vacation and go back to Minneapolis in winter? What was I thinking?" to "you need people in your life that add bumps." and "sometimes you just gotta say 'F it'". Words of wisdom indeed. Billy is funny and uniquely straightforward with his struggles to be mindful and real, even as an out-of-place tourist in a foreign country as he discovers ways to connect with "now" wherever he is, and it's a really fun ride. The story of this line dates back all the way to 1753 when it was known as Shenk's Whiskey; Louis Foreman would later purchase the brand and rename it after his two sons, Michael and Peter. We were incredibly lucky to have the current brains behind the operation, Master Distiller Dan McKee, come all the way from Kentucky to join us on this podcast. Please enjoy this very special episode featuring a very special whiskey.--What we drank:Michter's American WhiskeyMichter's Kentucky Straight Bourbon WhiskeyMichter's Kentucky Straight Rye WhiskeyMichter's Barrel Strength Kentucky Rye Whiskey (Single Barrel)--Follow us:spiritguidesocietypodcast.comfacebook.com/spiritguidesoctwitter.com/spiritguidesocinstagram.com/spiritguidesochttps://www.youtube.com/c/SpiritGuideSociety--From The Michter's website:Born and bred in Indiana, Michter's Master Distiller Dan McKee moved to Kentucky to pursue his dream of making whiskey. He began his career in the bourbon industry as a Distillery Operator at Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. After two years of hands-on experience making some of the industry's leading bourbons and ryes, he was promoted to Distillery Supervisor at Booker Noe Distillery, where he worked for seven years. At that distillery, Dan reported to Pam Heilmann and gained valuable experience in all aspects of whiskey distilling. After being brought to Michter's Distillery by Ms. Heilmann, he played an integral role in assisting with the construction of the company's new Shively Distillery, and along with Ms. Heilmann and Andrea Wilson he built the company's current production team. Dan has continued to expand the company's operations with his work to bring Michter's Fort Nelson distillery online with its legendary pot stills and cypress wood fermenters from the original Michter's Pennsylvania operation. With his expertise in grain, Dan has played a key role in working with our local farmers to coordinate the planting schedules on Michter's 145-acre parcel in Springfield, Kentucky. Having graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University, Dan serves as Michter's technical representative on the Kentucky Distillers' Association.LegacyMichter's is proud to honor a historical legacy tracing back to the founding of America's first whiskey company in 1753.The Early Years: Revolutionary Rye in Schaefferstown, PennsylvaniaOriginally known as Shenk's and later as Bomberger's, the whiskey company which ultimately became known as Michter's was founded by John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania in 1753. In its earliest days, Shenk's produced whiskey from rye grain, a favorite local crop in the Pennsylvania Blue Mountain Valley where the distillery was located.According to Pennsylvania historical lore, commemorated by the Lebanon Valley Coin Club in 1978, this particular rye whiskey was so valued that when the Revolutionary War broke out, General George Washington visited the distillery and purchased whiskey to fortify his men as they hunkered down in their camp through the long, brutal winter at Valley Forge. Over 200 years later the Michter's Pennsylvania management would say Michter's was "the whiskey that warmed the American Revolution."In the mid-1800s, Pennsylvania Dutchman Abraham Bomberger purchased the distillery and it became known for many decades as Bomberger's.Midlife Crises of the Twentieth Century: From Prohibition to BankruptcyThe passage of Prohibition in 1919 forced the distillery, along with other American spirits producers, to shut its doors to the public. Although the distillery did reopen after the repeal of Prohibition, it changed hands many times over the next few decades and frequently occupied a precarious financial position. During the 1950s, Lou Forman, one of the distillery's then-owners, created the modern Michter's brand name by combining portions of his sons' names - Michael and Peter. In 1989, with the entire American whiskey industry suffering a prolonged downturn, Michter's then-owners declared bankruptcy and abandoned the premises, leaving its Pennsylvania operations in disrepair and the Michter's name - seemingly - lost to history... were it not for a fortuitous connection to two whiskey lovers with an abiding admiration for the old Michter's legacy and quality.Restoring a Legend: Honoring Michter's Legacy with a Resurgence in KentuckyIn the 1990s, Joseph J. Magliocco and his consultant and mentor Richard "Dick" Newman teamed up to resurrect Michter's. Magliocco, who entered the wine and spirits industry after attending Yale College and graduating from Harvard Law School, was intimately familiar with Michter's through his college days of imbibing, bartending, and selling Michter's.Newman meanwhile, had followed up his service in the US Marine Corps (for which he earned a Purple Heart) with an illustrious career in the whiskey business, eventually running Old Grand-Dad, Old Crow, and Old Taylor for National Distillers before becoming President and CEO of Austin Nichols, the distiller of Wild Turkey.Magliocco and Newman began with a simple strategy - to honor the Michter's legacy by producing the best whiskey possible, cost be damned! After filing for the unused and abandoned Michter's trademark, they made their first major strategic decision: to resurrect Michter's in Kentucky, in the heart of the modern American whiskey industry, to ensure access to the best whiskey talent and resources available.Modern-Day Michter's: Offering the Greatest American WhiskeyToday, Michter's has three locations in Kentucky - a 78,000 square foot distillery in the Shively section of Louisville, the architecturally significant Fort Nelson Building on Louisville's Museum Row and 145 acres of farm land in Springfield.~michters.com--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

As you can imagine, we're all getting older and (theoretically) maturing. Well, one of us is, at any rate. In honor of my (Aaron's) 40th birthday (on August 21st), and the tendency for guys to start chucking their lives in an attempt to recapture their youth as soon as they officially become middle-aged, we decided to talk through the idea of midlife crises related to reading.
