Like the episode? Let us know! What does it mean to be human in the digital age where we can get lost in online worlds and create internet identities separate from our bodies? And what about transhumanism and AI? In this episode, Y4Life Director Michelle and Y4Life Assistant Cori chat with Vicar Josh Pauling, analyzing these challenging issues, how we must ground our identity in the wonders of the created and redeemed body, and how the incarnation of Christ is the ultimate answer to such questions. From this proper foundation, Vicar Pauling gives practical tips to help better serve and love our neighbors in body and soul and be prepared to sacrifice and suffer, too.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Joshua Pauling is vicar at All Saints Lutheran Church, contributing editor at Salvo, columnist at Modern Reformation, and has written for a variety of other publications including Areo, Forma Journal, Front Porch Republic, Logia: A Journal of Lutheran of Lutheran Theology, The Lutheran Witness, Mere Orthodoxy, Merion West, Public Discourse, Quillette, The Imaginative Conservative, Touchstone Magazine, among others. Mackelly and Simon will miss the big guy.Chapter Review:Princess Arianne Martell and a handful of her closest friends wait at an abandoned holdfast for Ser Arys Oakheart and Princess Myrcella Baratheon. The rendezvous is the start of a long journey across Dorne. At the end of the journey, Arianne plans to crown Myrcella as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. While they wait, her friend Garin shares news of the sighting of Arianne's brother Quentyn Martell in Planky Town seeking passage across the Narrow Sea. This only affirms Arianne's suspicions that Quentyn seeks the aid of the Golden Company to steal Arianne's birthright. With the new queen of the Seven Kingdoms on her side, and the support of the vast majority of the Dornish, Arianne will be sure to foil any of her brother's plans. When Ser Arys and Princess Myrcella arrive, Aryanne explains to Myrcella that Myrcella is the rightful queen and that Tommen has fallen in with bad advisors who have robbed her of her birthright. Areo Hotah observes as Prince Doran Martell is visited by three Sand Snakes, each with a plan to seek revenge for their father Oberyn's murder. The prince hears each niece out but makes no commitments. Doran does commit to sending Areo to round up all the Sand Snakes and confine them in the palace indefinitely. Simon and Mackelly worry about their venomous bite.Chapter Review:Areo Hotah, the Captain of Guards for Prince Doran Martell, bars Obara Sand's way, as she attempts an unscheduled visit with her uncle Doran. To avoid bloodshed, Doran allows her passage. The oldest of Oberyn Martell's bastard daughters, Obara is loud, brash, and filled with vengeance for Oberyn's murder. Doran reminds her that it was a trial by combat, and Oberyn willingly participated in it. Obara wants to take the Dornish hosts and attack. She will lead a host to Old Town while her sister Nymeria follows the Kingsroad with the other host. Doran says he'll think on the matter. When Obara storms out, Doran announces it's time to leave the Water Gardens and return to Sunspear. He fears the Sand Snakes are riling the populace over Oberyn's death. Along the way, they are met by Nymeria Sand. She has an alternative plan to Obara's. She wants the heads of Tywin, Jaime, and Cersei Lannister, along with King Tommen's. Doran asks her to be patient. She will not.Upon entering Sunspear, the populace is in an uproar, calling for vengeance. Inside the palace, he's first greeted by his daughter Arianne, but then met by Tyene Sand in the throne room. Her plan for vengeance is to marry Myrcella Baratheon to her cousin Trystane Martell, then hail Myrcella as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. When the Lannisters ride against Dorne for challenging Tommen's claim, the Dornish army destroys them. When Tyene is gone, Doran commands Areo to round up all eight of the Sand Snakes and confine them to a palace tower.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Areo Hotah - Captain of Guards for Prince Doran Martell.Doran Martell - Prince of Dorne. Tibor Rutar is the author of a book called "Capitalism for Realists: Virtues and Vices of the Modern Economy" in which he argues that the best system is a moderate, social democratic form of capitalism. In making that case, he heavily relies on "economic freedom" rankings. In the book, Rutar criticizes an article Ben Burgis wrote for Jacobin arguing that such rankings are worthless and tell us nothing:https://jacobin.com/2021/10/economic-freedom-rankings-frasier-institute-peter-leeson-socialism-capitalismRutar also wrote an article for Areo magazine called "Marxism: The Idea that Refuses to Die":https://areomagazine.com/2023/06/27/marxism-the-idea-that-refuses-to-die/....which Ben wrote about in last Sunday's Substack essay, "Why I"m Still a Marxist: A Response to Tibor Rutar":https://benburgis.substack.com/p/tibor-rutars-flawed-critique-of-marxIn this episode, they finally sit down to. talk out the differences in their worldviews! Christopher Hitchens was for many years considered one of the fiercest and most eloquent left-wing polemicists in the world. But on much of today's left, he's remembered as a defector, a warmonger, and a sellout—a supporter of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who traded his left-wing principles for neoconservatism after the September 11 attacks. In How Hitchens Can Save the Left, Matt Johnson argues that this easy narrative gets Hitchens exactly wrong. Hitchens was a lifelong champion of free inquiry, humanism, and universal liberal values. He was an internationalist who believed all people should have the liberty to speak and write openly, to be free of authoritarian domination, and to escape the arbitrary constraints of tribe, faith, and nation. He was a figure of the Enlightenment and a man of the left until the very end, and his example has never been more important. Shermer and Johnson discuss: Hitchens on free expression, identity politics, radicalism, interventionism, authoritarianism, patriotism, internationalism, America and Liberalism, reparations, religion, and death • identity politics • hostility to free speech • why Hitch did not become a neoconservative, warmonger, or imperialist • Enlightenment Liberalism • Trump and the division of the right • Hitchens on the precursors to Trump • Putin and Russian nationalism. Matt Johnson writes for Haaretz, Quillette, American Purpose, South China Morning Post, The Bulwark, Areo, Arc Digital, RealClearDefense, The Kansas City Star, and many other publications. His new book is How Hitchens Can Save the Left: Rediscovering Fearless Liberalism in an Age of Counter-Enlightenment.

What, exactly, is Brett? What does he do? 4:58 Free speech and Popperian thought (and what is Popperian thought, anyway?). 12:24 Brett's view on existential risk and the future; how he differs from the likes of Martin Rees and Toby Ord. 22:38 How can we overcome ‘acts of God'? (With reference to Iona's syphilitic friend.) The dangers of the unknown and the necessity of progress. 26:50 The unpredictability of the nature of problems, with reference to fear of nuclear war and nuclear energy. The nature and history of problem solving, particularly as regards energy. 37:02 The Popperian/Deutschian theory of knowledge—guesswork, creativity, and the reduction of error. 46:50 William Paley's watch, Darwinism, selfish genes, and the embedding of knowledge into reality. 54:15 On theory-ladenness, the necessity of error correction, the power of science, and the impossibility of a final theory—all is approximation and continual improvement. 1:01:10 The nature of good explanations, with reference to the invocation of gods vs scientific accounts and the nature of the atom. 1:07:24 How the principle of the difficulty of variability is important in art as well as science, with reference to Ursula K. Banks' treatment of it in his ‘Culture' novels). Richard's dystopian vision vs. Banks's utopian vision. Can technology take us to the sunlit uplands or, as Richard says, does the fact that we will always ultimately be “violent apes” constrain the possibilities of progress? Why Putin is a 19th-century leader. 10:38 The religious aspect of the war and Putin's warped view of history. Why so many fail to understand that Putin is just an imperialist and miss the mark by talking about Russian security interests and NATO expansion. 15:22 Wouldn't the US be angry if Mexico joined a Chinese version of the Warsaw Pact? Why blaming NATO expansion for the war is wrong. 20:00 What the Glenn Greenwald-style anti-imperialist left and the Tucker Carlson-style isolationist right get wrong about Ukraine and why (and how they overlap). 25:44 Isn't Ukraine corrupt and authoritarian? Aren't Russia and Ukraine just as bad as each other? Isn't Zelensky illiberal? 28:58 What about the Azov Battalion? Isn't Ukraine riddled with fascism and neo-Nazism? 31:40 How the usual suspects on the anti-imperialist left deny agency to Ukrainians, who want arms. What's actually happening on the ground now? What does the future of the war look like? 42:24 Has Putin lost his edge? Has the invasion backfired on him? Has he united the west again? And if so, how long will that unity last? Has the western reaction to Russian expansionism come too late? Should the west's aim be to degrade Russia's capability to wage such wars? Is a Ukrainian victory possible? 51:23 What should the west be doing about Ukraine? Will Europe put up with skyrocketing energy costs to help Ukraine? Will this lead to an upsurge in support for politicians like Le Pen? 53:31 Could Putin use nukes? Might he escalate the war? 58:18 A strange question about elites from Twitter for Matt. 1:03:08 The effects of the war on energy in Europe and attitudes to nuclear power. The war as an advertisement for nuclear power. Plus: The Ukrainian socialist Taras Bilous, on the frontlines and for western arming of Ukraine. Could Ukraine be a turning point for the left? 38:01 The war and the news cycle. Plus: the intransigence and greed of the oil companies and OPEC countries. 1:06:16 An aside: the grotesque mystery of America selling its soul to Saudi Arabia. 1:08:00 Is there anything Matt didn't get the chance to say but wanted to? Iona reads from Simon's book—language as an act of transportation, both connecting us with others and distancing us from the immediate basis of experience. Plus: the dangers of being trapped by language (“the trap of identity”, “the trap of culture”, etc.) and a Babylonian diversion. 37:27 Japanese enka music and Jero, the black American enka singer: a cautionary tale against feeling one's culture is special and unique. This is true at the individual level, too. This is an illusion caused by language. Further discussion and examples of this illusion and how it (sometimes dangerously) misleads and divides us. The artificiality of culture: our natures are all calibration, stemming from language and culture. Simon's Japanese experience. 49:48 Simon's views on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (linguistic relativity). 55:01 The power of music and its (lack of?) relation to language. Is the world headed in the direction of a universal culture (but not a monoculture!)? 1:07:06 Using language and argument instead of violence. Is democracy an evolutionarily stable strategy? In this 125th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week, we discuss the new current thing. The new current thing is not the Pfizer data release that happened this week, although perhaps it should be. The new current thing is the leaked draft majority opinion from Judge Alito, Supreme Court Justice of the United States, which reveals that Roe v. Wade is likely to be overturned. We discuss abortion, abortion policy, and what Americans say when they're polled about these things. Is there a hard-and-fast line to draw? Does biology provide insights? We argue that abortion is not a women's issue, per se, but an issue that pertains to all humanity, while also being a feminist issue. ***** Support the sponsors of the show: Vivo Barefoot: Shoes for healthy feet—comfortable and regenerative, enhances stability and tactile feedback. Any intimations to the contrary are entirely a performance for the sake of comedic irony or parody.Today, we introduce a new style of episode called re:joinder, in which we read an article of ~questionable~ merit dealing with academia, rhetoric, and/or politics and give you our real-time reactions to its problematic content. For our first re:joinder, Alex reads an article he picked out for Calvin and our special guest, Carnegie Mellon Ph.D. Candidate in Rhetoric Maggie Goss. The article in question: “Why Traditional Masculinity is Good for Academia” by Samuel Veissière.Published in Areo - an online magazine from the progenitors of the “Sokal Squared” hoax - Veissière's argument begins from the premise that it is men, not women, who are structurally disadvantaged in society in general, and academia in particular. The author (who is, ironically, a tenure-track faculty member at McGill University) also argues that “traditional masculinity” is not only unfairly maligned in contemporary academia, but also an untapped resource for reform of academia's worst aspects — from the purported closing and coddling of young minds, all the way up to the very real problems of widespread sexual harassment and assault on campuses. Yes, Veissière actually argues that more masculinity could help reduce sexual violence against women. In response, Calvin, Maggie, and Alex discuss the article's spurious reasoning, lack of evidence, and oddball assumptions before presenting their own ideas for how to address the downsides of hegemonic masculinity.Works and Concepts Cited In This EpisodeBurmila, E.
