Passage: 1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. 5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. (Psalm 16:1-6) Reflection: “Apart from you I have no good” (Psalm 16:2). It's a short sentence, but it says more than entire volumes of theology. David's words here are a confession, a re-centering of the heart around a simple truth: God himself is the source of everything good. At one level, this is about gratitude. Every good thing—relationships, work, beauty, food, rest—is ultimately a gift from God. Even when life feels chaotic or uncertain, the blessings that remain are not accidents. They come from a good and generous hand. So this psalm invites us to say thank you—not just in a general sense, but directly to the one from whom every good and perfect gift comes. But David's words also go deeper. They're not just about receiving good things from God, but about recognizing that God himself is the good thing we need most. He is our portion and our cup (Psalm 16:5). He is the inheritance that makes all the “lines” fall in pleasant places (16:6). To know him is better than any other joy or achievement life could offer. To walk apart from him is to forfeit true life, even if we appear to gain everything else. So consider: Do you see God as the giver of every good thing—or do you live as if you must grab those things on your own? Is your joy rooted in God himself—or only in the gifts he gives? Sometime today, pray that God would re-center your heart to delight in him above all else—and thank him for every good thing that flows from his hand. Song: Fullness of Joy (Psalm 16) by Caroline Cobb Smith Lyrics: O God You are my refuge I know without You I have no good thing O God You are my portion My chosen portion You are what I need No other god beside You You hold my lot and fill my cup Oh beautiful inheritance You are enough In your presence there is fullness There is fullness of joy At your right hand there is goodness Boundless goodness Forevermore I choose you Lord O God you go before me You're right beside me In my darkest night My God you hold my future My hope it rests secure In the finished work of Christ My heart is glad My soul rejoices You hold me fast you won't let go Your ways are good and good for me I'm yours and yours alone Your holy one has risen up He's overcome the grave The path of life is opened wide For he has made a way Prayer: “O God, you are life, wisdom, truth, bounty, and blessedness, the eternal, the only true good; our God and our Lord, you are our hope and our heart's joy— we acknowledge with thanksgiving that you have made us in your image, and that we may direct our thoughts to you. Lord, make us know you aright, that we may love, enjoy, and possess you more and more; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” — Anselm

There are a number of things that can kill our joy including resentment, regret, fear. If we struggle with any of these things, we can take them to the cross and lay them at the feet of Jesus. Because He is Lord and always on the throne, we can trust that He has a plan and is in control. Let go of the things robbing your joy and cling to Jesus, the only source of true and perfect joy. A Key to Joy | Psalm 103 Bless the Lord, my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. 2 Bless the Lord, my soul, And do not forget any of His benefits; 3 Who pardons all your guilt, Who heals all your diseases; 4 Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with favor and compassion; 5 Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle. 6 The Lord performs righteous deeds And judgments for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the sons of Israel. 8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in mercy. 9 He will not always contend with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our guilty deeds. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our wrongdoings from us. 13 Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. 14 For He Himself knows our form; He is mindful that we are nothing but dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; Like a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16 When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place no longer knows about it. 17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting for those who fear Him, And His justice to the children's children, 18 To those who keep His covenant And remember His precepts, so as to do them. 19 The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all. 20 Bless the Lord, you His angels, Mighty in strength, who perform His word, Obeying the voice of His word! 21 Bless the Lord, all you His angels, You who serve Him, doing His will. 22 Bless the Lord, all you works of His, In all places of His dominion; Bless the Lord, my soul! God Our Joy: Psalm 103 (Nate Edmondson) by Highlands Community Church
Message from Lyndsay Slocum on June 23, 2024
Psalm 32: A Reflection on Forgiveness and Joy Psalm 32, attributed to David, is a heartfelt expression of the joy and relief that comes from experiencing God's forgiveness. It is often categorized as one of the penitential psalms, where the psalmist reflects on sin, confession, and the resulting restoration. Verses 1-2: The Blessing of Forgiveness David begins by acknowledging the blessedness of those whose transgressions are forgiven and whose sins are covered. He emphasizes that there is a profound happiness in being relieved of the burden of sin and in having a right relationship with God. Verses 3-4: The Weight of Unconfessed Sin David recounts his own experience, describing how keeping silent about his sin caused physical and emotional distress. His strength was sapped, and he felt the heavy hand of God's displeasure, illustrating the deep impact that unconfessed sin can have on one's life. Verse 5: The Relief of Confession The turning point comes when David decides to acknowledge his sin to God. He confesses without hiding anything, and as a result, he experiences the liberating forgiveness of the Lord. This act of confession brings immediate relief and restoration. Verses 6-7: Encouragement to Seek God** David encourages others to pray to God while He may be found, assuring them of His protection. He speaks of God as a hiding place who preserves from trouble and surrounds with songs of deliverance, emphasizing God's readiness to forgive and protect those who seek Him. Verses 8-9: Divine Guidance** God responds by promising to instruct and teach the way to go. He advises not to be like a horse or mule that needs to be controlled with bit and bridle but to be willing and responsive to His guidance. Verses 10-11: The Joy of the Righteous** David concludes by contrasting the sorrow of the wicked with the steadfast love that surrounds those who trust in the Lord. He calls on the righteous to rejoice and be glad, celebrating the uprightness of heart that comes from living in God's forgiveness and grace. Reflection: Psalm 32 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of confession and the joy that comes from being forgiven by God. It teaches that holding onto sin causes suffering, but honesty with God leads to healing and joy. This psalm invites everyone to experience the freedom that comes from laying their burdens at God's feet and embracing His mercy and guidance. This reflection captures the essence of Psalm 32 and its timeless message about the transformative power of God's forgiveness.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.
This week we look at Psalm 126 where the writer beautifully acknowledges the reality of joy and sorrow within our world. How do we wrestle with both joy and sorrow before our ever-present, ever-kind God.
No one is ever fully satisfied, and often the better we seem to have it the worse we seem to feel. How did we get here? And what can be done about it?
