The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
Dr. Christina Bjorndal, a naturopathic doctor and authority in the treatment of mental illness joins The Catalyst to speak about her own experience with depression, bulimia and suicidality, which, at one point, left her in a coma. Yet, in a stunning message of hope she reveals that it was this latter incident that set her on a trajectory of healing, a process she says is both individual and ongoing. As human beings we are divided into four quadrants: mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. Western medicine is limited, Dr. Christina explains, focusing only on the physical aspects of mental health. Naturopathy and pharmaceuticals can work together to better treat not only symptoms of mental illness but their root causes. To get to those root causes we must be willing to dig into our own pasts. What underlying fear is the brain, which is designed to keep us safe, protecting us from? Do our problems stem from nature versus nurture, from genetics, epigenetics and/or intergenerational trauma? We often wear masks in public to hide our suffering, such as the one Dr. Christina wore throughout her time in the corporate world. However, the body will whisper that something is wrong until it yells in the form of a crisis. Dr. Christina leads us through an exercise in which we have an honest conversation with our hearts. Join today's discussion to learn more about how we can learn to check in on ourselves, starting in the smallest ways and the important difference between information and transformation. Quotes • “Anyone struggling with their mental health, suicidal ideations, depression - you're really the furthest from love for yourself that you can possibly be.” (7:21 | Dr. Christina) • “Labels help to explain a constellation of symptoms, your experience, but they don't explain how you got there. And often, that explanation is rooted in some earlier experience that predates the diagnosis.” (10:31 | Dr. Christina) • “As a human, you're comprised of the physical level, mental, the emotional and the spiritual, and Western medicine is mostly focused on the physical level.” (13:35 | Dr. Christina) • “I subscribe to the theory, a little bit more of epigenetics, which is that genes load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger.” (23:09 | Dr. Christina) • “Whenever you say you want something - lose 20 pounds, want to leave a relationship, job, change, whatever you say you want something, but you never do it is because you've got an unconscious sub commitment, you're committed to something else. And that's something else is often being safe, keeping you safe.” (28:51 | Dr. Christina) • “That is what depression does to you. It really clouds your judgment. It's like you're in a dark cloud and you cannot see through that cloud. You're pretty much immersed in it. However, the sun is actually still shining behind that cloud.” (34:25 | Dr. Christina) Links Connect with Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND: Website: drchristinabjorndal.com Facebook: Dr. Christina Bjorndal Twitter: @drbjorndal YouTube: Christina Bjorndal Instagram: @drchrisbjorndal Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Dr. Rob continues his discussion with Dr. Eddie Capparucciis, the creator of the unique Inner Child Model for the treatment of Problematic Sexual Behaviors, to talk about common blind spots someone in recovery might have. When addicts are in their addiction, they can exhibit strong narcissistic tendencies, which can make it difficult to connect with others and see their perspectives. TAKEAWAYS: [1:45] Addicts have a hard time seeing their own blindspots. What should they be aware of? [2:40] Curiosity of people is an important way to connect with others. Addicts can lack this curiosity. [3:35] Addicts can be hypersensitive to rejection and criticism. [5:00] People learn how to love from their caregivers. [6:20] In a lot of ways, addicts have been emotionally neglected. [8:50] In recovery, we have the opportunity to break the cycle. [10:20] You break the cycle by being emotionally present. [12:45] Emotionally unavailable people tend to be ‘do-ers', they try to fix the problem by finding a solution, instead of being present with their emotions. [16:10] As long as you're oblivious to the pain you've been through, you will also be oblivious to the pain you're causing others. [18:35] How do you work through your issues if you can't afford therapy? [21:40] Dr. Eddie talks about the current work and programs he's a part of to help others. [24:15] Don't have the financial resources to go to therapy? Dr. Eddie can help. Whether they're 4 or 14. That's one of the ways we don't get an understanding of what we need.” “It's never too late to start making changes.” “Even in the most troubled families, they are oblivious, even if they don't mean to be.”
Have you ever felt disconnected from your partner, spouse, or someone you love? Maybe your schedules are getting busier everyday? Or do your kids distract you from paying attention to the other person? On this episode of God Hears Her, Eryn and Elisa talk with Beth and Todd Guckenberger, a married couple who decided years ago to set aside two hours a night to work on growing their marriage. About Our Guests: Beth and Todd met at the age of seventeen in a Young Life Bible study. They experienced several international short-term mission trips together, and in the mid-nineties they were deeply moved by orphaned children they met in Mexico. In 1997, with a dream, a savings account, and each other, they packed and drove to Monterrey, Mexico, where they lived for fifteen years. Beth and Todd are the parents of eleven children—a family they've formed through biological, foster, and adoptive children, and a family who reminds them everyday to stay in the fight until every child is known and loved. They lead Back2Back Ministries, an international orphan care organization with nine locations around the world. The combined 350 staff work relentlessly to find new and creative solutions to the challenges facing vulnerable children and their families. Notes and Quotes: “Anyone can have a co-missional marriage.” “Sometimes you can make your family life be your exclusive mission.” “We are going to spend two hours a day only wearing that hat of spouse.” “It [the two hours] became the deepest breath of our day.” “The calling felt like a magnet, you could feel the resistance.” “Expectations are like premeditated resentments.” “Set aside time (any amount) where you are going to put away phones, don't do the dishes, don't help the kids, and spend time just the two of you.” “When you go through hard things together, it creates an intimate connection.” “Part of being co-missional is understanding that my agenda is not the most important.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show : If you or someone you know suspects any human trafficking activity, please call the National Human Trafficking hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” to 233-733. OverviewErica Cuni's burnout story begins with a Mack Dump Truck, which hit her as she was on her way to work as a licensed therapist. In the ensuing months, Erica not only had to learn how to walk again after almost losing her foot, but she also lost her job, ended a long-term toxic relationship, found herself in extreme debt, and ended up living with her parents again in her mid-thirties. But this is not where Erica's story ended. Instead, she used this stress-inducing time in her life to reevaluate her priorities, get back into her body and kick start her journey towards mental, physical and spiritual health. Now, Erica works as a full-time burnout recovery and prevention educator, a podcast host and a Reiki practitioner. She is living her #UndeniableTruth and has made a career out of helping others do the same. According to Erica, #UndeniableTruth is what she wished she had in her life when she was falling apart and didn't have a roadmap to help her rediscover who she was or what she needed to thrive. Now, Erica uses wisdom from her own burnout experience to guide her clients as they heal from burnout, find their truth and learn to live with intention. Tune into this week's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast to hear more about Erica's journey from burnout victim to Burnout Professor. Learn about the things Erica wishes she was taught in grad school, the importance of working with a trauma-informed therapist if you are in the throes of burnout and why breathwork is absolutely essential for grounding yourself and navigating stress. Most importantly, learn how Erica refused to let her burnout get the best of her and instead capitalized on her burnout to positively reshape her future. Quotes• “Anyone that experiences burnout knows that it's not just related to work. It affects every piece of your life.” (4:37-4:44) • “I lost myself somewhere, and I didn't know when I lost myself. I didn't understand because I thought I was doing everything right….I had a Master's degree, I was helping other people figure their stuff out, I was trained in all these different types of modalities on how to help people get there, but I was like, ‘I'm still missing something!'” (8:22-8:40) • “In order for us to get success out of talk therapy, our brains have to be in a calmer state, our bodies have to be in a calm state. And so when you do the body work first...and you get someone back into the body, back into the present moment, that opens up the brain so that they can start to self-reflect because talk therapy's all about self-reflection.” (16:00-16:20) • “When you get burnt out, it's about learning a new lifestyle afterwards….Find something that engages your body back into the present moment, and that sends signals up to your brain that, ‘Hey, I'm back here in this world!'....because ultimately we want to have people understand that it's safe to take risks and enjoy life. It's safe to enjoy your life. You don't have to stay in this stressed state where you're afraid to do anything.” (27:16-27:55) • “If for whatever reason you don't believe in meditation, I do believe you believe in sitting still and being in the moment and learning how to do that because you know that you feel better and calmer.” (34:50-35:00) • “Knowing my breath is what helped me get in tune with my body, so that I could listen to it so that I could make decisions that were aligned with me versus my mind trying to dictate what I was supposed to be doing.” (38:18-38:33) Linkshttps://www.theburnoutprofessor.com https://www.instagram.com/theburnoutprofessor https://www.linkedin.com/theburnoutprofessor https://www.facebook.com/theburnoutprofessor https://www.theburnoutprofessor.com/burnout-quiz XOXO,C If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing
I loathe the phrase “liver detox” because it's so misunderstood by most people. If you're liver is struggling, it doesn't need to be detoxed! Got eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dandruff and other skin issues? Your liver MUST be on your radar, but not the way the internet gurus talk about it. In this episode, I'm going to share with you how your liver actually detoxes on its own and what you need to do to support it. That way you can avoid those horrible “die off” symptoms that are so common when doing different detoxes you can do on your own. I've worked with too many clients who have terrible flares as a result of not keeping an eye on supporting their liver, and ended up with even worse rashes than before they started. In this episode: Stop listening to people who say your liver is like a filter or a sponge What “die off” symptoms actually mean Why detoxing your liver is unnecessary (and what to do instead) What liver support I recommend from clinical experience How to easily understand what your liver actually does Quotes: Anyone telling you that you just need to detox your liver doesn't truly understand how your liver works, why it plays a role in helping rebuild healthy skin, and what it really needs in order to operate optimally. They claim that your liver acts like a sponge. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your liver isn't a sponge. It's not like a fish filter either. (0:25) When Phase 1 detox is pushed too hard OR if Phase 2 doesn't have enough ingredients (like glycine, glutathione, and magnesium) to move things through, a backup of toxic material will occur. When this happens, you can experience “die off” (also known as the Herxheimer Reaction), symptoms like rashes and even an exacerbation of symptoms. (12:45)
In this episode: Letting go of those “should” expectations Giving people grace & taking them off a pedestal Choosing to assume the best in people Loving others wherever they are at I am SO excited you are here today, it’s a little bit of a curveball in that I’ve never talked about this in this way, BUT I really think it’s going to be impactful. We’re talking about letting “it” go. & what I’m talking about, is the view of our relationship with our parents and how they “should” act as parents. Sometimes, it’s not that we JUST need to take action, but that we actually need to look at things through a different lens, and honestly that tiny little reframe can really help us in an impactful way to start making moves right? I am really excited to share a few tips with you today & I cannot wait to hear what you think girl!! Quotes: “Anyone that you’re thinking about that ‘should’ act in a certain way, where is that coming from?” “Why not just assume the best in people, it feels better. When we’re holding on to grudges or resistance or negativity, that’s not serving anyone and it doesn’t physically feel good in our body.” “We can choose to love them, and do the only thing that we can do: control ourselves.” “What our choice to do is? Is to own what we CAN control, which is our thoughts about these people.” Resources: Hey girl, have you joined our email list yet? In this episode: What therapy is vs what therapy is not Supporting those around us who are struggling with mental health issues Combating mental health stigma with the movement Mental health practices for everyone Dr. Christina Iglesia, is a clinical psychologist who provides therapeutic services in the San Francisco Bay Area. The stigma that her patients bring into therapy has been an enduring theme as well as a notable barrier to treatment. It is with this in mind that she created the #therapyiscool mental health action campaign, with the intent to encourage authentic conversations about mental health. This mental health campaign is a call to action on two fronts. One brings attention to the matter of mental health and removes its stigma. The other provides much needed funds for mental health treatment. Today’s episode with Dr. Christina is such a POWERFUL conversation around mental health and I am SO excited to share it with you all. She is incredibly insightful and not only provides tangible tips for anyone who are just wanting to be in our best mental health mindset, but also for those of us who have others in our lives that are struggling with depression, or addiction, or wanting to see a therapist or needing to & not knowing exactly how to navigate that. We talk about how to actually have more authentic conversations about mental health & to encourage this dialogue in society. Her campaign #therapyiscool is something I know we can stand behind together & you’re gonna want to stick around to the end of this episode for something extra special I decided to do. “Us as women can do hard things. There’s a reason that we are the ones birthing children.” PUMP-UP JAM: Shake It Off by Taylor Swift Quotes: “Anyone who is open to personal growth, can benefit from therapy.” “This is something that doesn’t have to be for a certain subset.” “When you’re trying to find the words to express concern for somebody in your life you have to really think this through & be mindful of how are my words going to be interpreted.” “People who have a support system, do better in treatment.” “It is hard to navigate life completely on our own even if we don’t have any struggles. We need connection. We need human contact.” “We have to be mindful about what signals our body is telling us, and then we have to listen to it.” Resources: Support Group Resources: Al-Anon & NAMI Nami - support groups for mental health conditions Connect with Dr. Christina on Instagram @dr.christina_ Follow the movement #therapyiscool & @hashtagtherapyiscool Check out ALL my favorite things on Amazon (trampolines, books, & more!) For part three of Making Money in Mograph, we’re talking about how you can earn extra money or even replace all your income by sharing what you know with other motion designers as an online instructor. Even if you’ve never taught anyone anything about your work before, today’s guest will tell you how and why you can teach starting right now. Jake Bartlett teaches motion design on Skillshare as well as a couple of School of Motion courses. Although he started out working for a production company, Jake found that he can actually make enough to support himself by creating online courses. Today, these courses make up nearly all of Jake’s income and he continues to make new courses all the time. This episode is all about how you can put your knowledge and skills to work by teaching others just like Jake does. There are a number of different platforms that you can use to host your lessons and we talk about the structures and advantages of several of them. We also go over how to cultivate your teacher persona and create your videos so as to reach your students in an engaging and fun way. In this episode: How online teaching platforms can pay you for sharing your skills Advice for designing and creating your first class Honing your persona as an instructor so your students will always be engaged with your content Building a course from scratch even when you’re new to the material you are teaching The advantages of using another company’s platform to host your courses instead of doing it independently How motion designers can make extra money with stock websites Quotes: “Anyone can teach as long as you know something. If you have knowledge to share, you can teach it.” [8:51] “If you have a topic that you want to teach, but you feel like other people have already taught it, that shouldn’t be a hindrance, because if other people have taught something and it’s done well, that means that students are interested in that type of content.” [11:48] “The policy that I have taught by is to just have 100% content. Don’t have any fluff, don’t put anything in there that is boring that people are going to want to skip around or wait hoping the section will start. As long as what you’re putting into the video or tutorial is stuff that is actionable and things that they’re going to be learning from, and it’s engaging, then I don’t think length is an issue.” [14:27] “This is how it works as a teacher - I have to learn how to do what I want to teach and then I can teach it. It doesn’t matter how recently I learned it.” [26:32] Links: Find Jake online Follow Jake on Twitter | Instagram | Dribbble | Tumblr | Vimeo | YouTube Jake’s classes on Skillshare Get 2 months premium for free on Skillshare! SHOW NOTES Dr. Tom Michaud is the man when it comes to knowledge about the foot and ankle in the running world. I ordered his book, Human Locomotion, read some his articles and listened to some interview before reaching out for this interview. I was blown away by the clinical pearls he has stored in his mind. Literally endless amounts of knowledge! If you’re a student, you should invest some money in his book… seriously, it’s light years ahead of most information you have learned about the foot and ankle. If you’re an athlete, runner, dancer or strength coach you’ll still get something out of this interview since we make some light conversation between the study references. Take a deep breath, rewind a few sections that interest you and ask you medical provider about the concepts we cover in relationship to your ache/ pain. I learned a ton during this conversation with Tom and plan on doing another chat with him soon (with or without a recording). Thank you so much for your time and knowledge Tom!
