Welcome to "Thriving in Midlife Redefining Aging with Wellness" the podcast where we discuss how to live an extraordinary life in every aspect. I'm your host, Kellie Lupsha, a high-performance health coach, who is delighted to be your guide to vitality. In today's episode, Dr. Heide and I dive into a topic most women don't think about until it becomes a problem: the truth about bone strength, aging, and preventing the kinds of injuries that can dramatically change our future. As winter sets in and the risk of slips, trips, and falls increases, I wanted to have a real conversation about how we can support our bodies from the inside out.Key Highlights:Why women are more prone to falls and fractures (especially hip fractures). The myths about calcium supplements and why calcium alone isn't enough. The importance of vitamin D, K2, and magnesium for bone strength. How movement, especially jumping, rebounding, lifting weights, and unilateral exercises, activates the parathyroid gland to strengthen bones. Why the U.S. has high hip-fracture rates despite heavy calcium supplementation. The role of collagen and strontium in bone remodeling.Personal and client success stories with OsteoStrong and strength training. The message: bone health is built over years, and what you do today determines your mobility, aging, and longevity.Key Takeaways:“Once a woman… gets that hip fracture, your chances of survival for the next three to five years plummet significantly. You just shorten your lifespan dramatically after that hip fracture.” -Kellie Lupsha“Every time you work out, every time you jump up and down… we activate the parathyroid gland, and it really charges up or balances that calcium in our body.” -Dr.Heidi*TAKE THE FREE ~ DISCOVER YOUR MIDLIFE HEALTH BLUEPRINT*****>>> Click Here
In this inspiring episode, fitness and mindset coach Melissa JJ Vogel joins Wendy to break down what it really takes to transform your body, your confidence, and your life in midlife. Melissa shares her journey from rock-bottom exhaustion to becoming a strong, empowered woman—and how simple shifts like walking, strength training, and mindset rewiring can help any woman break out of the “meh” life and step into her strongest self. What You'll Learn Why most women change only when pain—not motivation—pushes them forward The connection between building muscle, boosting confidence, and emotional resilience How walking can jumpstart energy, clarity, and healthier habits Why strength training is essential in midlife for metabolism, hormones, and long-term health How to overcome gym intimidation and start seeing yourself as a strong, capable woman
What happens when your childhood is defined by surgeries, pain, and a degenerative bone disease—and you grow up to become a powerful advocate for women's health, strength, and potential? You get Jenny Rappole. In this inspiring conversation, Jenny shares how she transformed early challenges into a lifelong passion for movement, wellness, and helping women in midlife reconnect with their bodies. Now a fitness and wellness coach—and a newly appointed member of the Board of the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation—Jenny empowers women to start exactly where they are, one small step at a time. We talk about the importance of mobility, why strength training must be built on a solid foundation, and how midlife can be a time of reinvention and real personal growth. If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin, this episode offers a clear, doable roadmap to move forward. Listen in and learn why it's never too late to build strength, confidence, and momentum. Takeaways Start where you are—keep it simple and doable to build real momentum. Midlife is a reinvention: embrace it as a magical, powerful stage of life. One kept promise builds confidence; choose one action and let it be enough. Mobility is essential; movement is strength work. Nutrition and exercise work together to enhance overall health. Repetition in midlife is a superpower for maintaining strength and well-being. Regularly reassess and adjust your wellness routine as your life shifts. Build a foundation of essential habits to set yourself up for success. Approach strength training with care—start with mobility, form, and basics. It's never too late to start making meaningful change. Looking in the mirror and not recognizing your body anymore? Despite eating well and staying active, your body keeps changing in ways that feel beyond your control. Your jeans don't fit, your belly feels thicker, and your old fitness routine just isn't working. In this episode of Pleasure in the Pause, host Gabriella Espinosa talks with menopause fitness specialist Megan Dahlman about what's really happening to your body during perimenopause and menopause—and what you can actually do about it. Learn practical, science-backed strategies to build strength, improve body composition, and feel confident in your changing body.In her 17 years of professional training, Megan Dahlman has become the sought-after trainer for women over 40 who want to be strong and live a long, healthy life. Leveraging a degree in Exercise Science and certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), she has an uncanny ability to make fitness and nutrition simple, doable, and, most importantly, sustainable. No fad diets or trendy gadgets required!! Through her weekly newsletter, top-ranked podcast, and popular online training programs and courses, her mission is to help every woman in midlife (and beyond) feel strong, pain-free, and confident in all aspects of her body.Highlights from our discussion include:Understanding body composition: It's not just about the scale—learn the difference between lean mass (muscle, bone, organs) and fat mass, and why muscle matters more than ever in midlife.Visceral vs. subcutaneous fat: Menopausal women store more dangerous visceral fat around organs due to declining estrogen, which explains belly weight gain even without scale changes.Muscle is your superpower: Building muscle improves metabolism, bone density, hormone regulation, and energy. Make strength training your primary focus and other health goals will follow.Know your metabolic body type: Understanding if you're an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph helps you set realistic expectations and train effectively for your unique body.Three essential exercises: Do these anywhere—squats (10 reps), countertop push-ups (10 reps), and planks (hold for 3-5 deep breaths).Hormones matter: Declining estrogen disrupts cortisol and insulin regulation. Manage stress daily through walks, breathwork, and rest.Break the all-or-nothing cycle: Stop swinging between extreme restriction and giving up. Ask daily: "What can I do today?"It's not too late: Your body can still build strength and improve at any age, regardless of your starting point. This week, choose ONE movement that feels good in your body and do it daily—not as punishment, but as an act of self-care.CONNECT WITH MEGAN DAHLMER:InstagramWebsitePodcastBody Type QuizCONNECT WITH GABRIELLA ESPINOSA:InstagramLinkedInWork with GabrielGo to https://www.gabriellaespinosa.com/ to book a call.Full episodes on YouTube. This week on the podcast, I'm talking about something most runners overlook completely—the off-season. And the truth is, if you use it the right way, it can become your biggest competitive edge. That's exactly what we're getting into inside this episode, The Off-Season Advantage: Build Strength and Endurance While Others Rest. Most runners come out of race season tired, beat up, and unsure of what to do next. They either keep pushing too hard or they stop training altogether. But the off-season is actually where the real transformation happens. This is the phase where you can rebuild your body, increase your strength, expand your aerobic engine, and set yourself up for massive success in the next training block. So if you want to make real progress while everyone else is shutting it down, don't skip this one. The post 307. The Off-Season Advantage: Build Strength and Endurance While Others Rest appeared first on Running Lean with Patrick McGilvray.

On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty talks with performance coach and author Timothy Ward about building a strong body and a resilient mind after 40. Timothy shares how athletics helped him survive a violent childhood, and why muscle mass, heart strength, and metabolic health are the real longevity markers that add quality years. We break down his Fitness Quadrant (training, cardio, recovery, and nutrition), the science behind resistance training, and practical ways to create a preemptive plan that pushes back against aging. If you're 40–75 and tired of watered-down “fitspo,” this episode offers a clear, no-nonsense blueprint to get strong, stay mobile, and live with intent. About the guest : Timothy Ward is a global performance coach and author of The GOAT Within. Drawing on three decades in exercise science and coaching—from everyday professionals to elite athletes—he designs custom, science-based programs that integrate resistance training, cardiovascular conditioning, recovery, and nutrition. Key takeaways : The three longevity markers: preserve and (ideally) increase muscle mass, develop heart strength, and improve metabolic efficiency through targeted training and nutrition. Muscle is metabolic “engine”: resistance training (bands, bodyweight, dumbbells, cables, barbells) preserves mobility, bone density, and insulin sensitivity. Heart strength matters: calculated cardio can thicken the left ventricular wall, lower resting heart rate, and improve circulation. Metabolic strength: reduce ultra-processed foods, industrial seed oils, and additives; prioritize protein, whole foods, fiber, and smart fueling. Preemptive beats reactive: start in your 20s–30s if you can; in your 40s–60s, learn the fundamentals and create a weekly, adequate (not minimal) program. The Fitness Quadrant: training + cardio + recovery + nutrition—customized to your current condition—beats one-size-fits-all plans. Mind–body loop: consistent physical training improves mood, resilience, and mental clarity, not just physique. Strategy over willpower: knowledge, structure, and progressive overload change the trajectory more reliably than “motivation.” Connect with the guest Website: fitnessquadrant.net Book: The GOAT Within on Amazon Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Hoping I can get your input here… I am a blue belt in jiu jitsu, been doing it for exactly 3 years now. I am on a 95% paleo diet. I will swerve off the road for some pho or random foods when we are out but nothing terrible. 100% no sugar, no processed foods or bread. When I am consistent in jj I can roll one after another and not get too exhausted. I have been good on my diet this year, I have been going to jj 3-4 times a week BUT I have also added in kettlebell circuit training 5x a week for the past 2 months. I am trying to up my strength, at 38 these young fuckers are tearing me up! Anyways, I am exhausted quickly when I roll now and it's frustrating. Can I simply change my diet? I eat a lot of meat, mainly beef. Pretty much stick to meat, veggies and fruit. I don't want to let up on either but shit maybe I need to. Maybe I am not fueling myself enough? Should I eat MORE? Hoping this finds you! Would really appreciate your input. Looking for podcasts about lifting for health Kristi writes: Hi Robb and Nicki, I've been craving some content about lifting lately, and the best YouTubers I know of don't seem to have audio-only podcasts, or they are heavily science and bodybuilding based. The science and bodybuilding is great, but I also like learning about stuff that will help me be fit and strong and mobile, not just pure bodybuilding. I was listening to Robb's old Paleo Solution episodes with Greg Everett and they are great, it's a good mix of good information but also always the caveat that it really depends what you want to do. Greg and Robb would answer the question based on what an Olympic lifter or a powerlifter might do, but also what you might want to do for general health and life. Thanks for any thoughts you might have about this, and thank you for the great work you've done over all these years! PS I listen to a lot of podcasts, so I won't listen to yours any less if you share some good podcast ideas! Post Heart Attack plan Frederick writes: Hello Nicki and Robb! I am one of your original dedicated five listeners who now wish he would have listened more carefully to your incomprehensive ramblings! I have written you a question before regarding relevant testing to assess cardiovascular health, what I am now about tell you makes that question irrelevant. I also wrote you a separate e-mail about this, but to my question. It regards an issue with my extremely elevated LDL (696) which has been a concern for me. On August 19 I got the answer to my concerns through a heart attack and a 10 minute cardiac arrest. Thankfully I survived and am able to write this. My story is that I have been keto since 2012 and 95% carnivore since early 2020 (meat, a lot of eggs, full fat dairy and occasionally fish. A few plants like onions and mushrooms for taste). I am 45 years, 10% bodyfat and very athletic since adolescence, so no pre-existing conditions and no cheat days, cheat days is just not who I am. So healthy, athletic and on the "perfect diet" for 15 years and still got heart disease. Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. This episode was such a fun mix of science, emotions, and hot tubs that could cook a turkey! We started with some thoughts on Western States, less than 3 weeks out from the race. Does embracing the stage also mean embracing social media posts telling you that you aren't being picked to perform well? Our argument channeling Tyrese Halliburton of the Indiana Pacers: the “noise” can be performance enhancing if you have fun with it!The main science topic was a WILD study on the hot tub improving hemoglobin levels, resting heart rate, and altitude performance. It's “wild” because the hot tub was set astonishingly high, with participants staying in for an astonishingly long time. I like my participants like I like my eggs: hard-boiled. We talk about what it means and why passive heat training might be the easiest advanced training intervention that goes beyond the basics. And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: a training trip out to the Western States course, Kilian Jornet searching for a pacer, Cam Jones consuming 185 grams of carbs per hour on his way to winning Unbound Gravel, Jessie Diggins' amazing poem on fueling her body to take a hit, a study on ketones and altitude that found no benefits, using downhills to improve strength for flat running, and a genetic link between muscle stiffness and strains, plus a Q+A on the new OTQ standards getting faster for men (we don't like it), whether to GO FOR IT if going for it might not lead to your big goals, a hypothetical about gold medalist Kristian Blummenfelt at a mountain race, and heat and family planning. The episode finishes up with questions about alcohol and celebrity-flavored bathwater. It'll make sense soon. Maybe. We love you all! In today's episode, I sit down with Dr. Derek Alessi—an expert in helping adults over 45 reclaim their health through practical fitness and nutrition strategies. Dr. Derek's journey started as an overweight teenager who transformed his own health through strength training and nutrition, igniting a lifelong passion to help others do the same. For nearly three decades, he's helped countless adults reduce medications, strengthen their immune systems, and improve their quality of life—not through fads or extremes, but through proven principles, consistency, and accountability. Tune in to learn the biggest misconceptions about fitness and nutrition, why extreme diets and workouts are unnecessary, and simple strategies you can start implementing today to feel stronger, live longer, and take control of your health.
As we age, maintaining strength and joint health isn't just helpful—it's essential. In this episode, we're breaking down the truth about strength training over 40 and why it's one of the most important investments you can make in your long-term health and independence. You'll learn why challenging your body is key to avoiding injury, improving memory, and feeling empowered in your daily life. Whether you have active kids at home, you're caring for grandkids, or just want to grocery shop pain-free when you're 80, strength training is the key to it all. Let this episode be your permission to stop playing small—and start lifting heavy. Some key takeaways from this episode include: Muscle does not mean bulk. It takes very heavy weights, loading up on calories, and supplementing to get “bulky.” With the right training and nutrition, you'll build lean muscle that supports your long-term health. Discomfort today brings ease tomorrow. Pushing your body in safe, intentional ways now can lead to fewer health issues, more energy, and the ability to show up for your family and yourself later in life. Weight fluctuates, but your health shouldn't. Put away the scale, and focus on how you feel and move, not what a number on a scale says. The only numbers that matter are how many reps you can do and how much weight you can lift - and those numbers are actually exciting to see go up! Training Principles for Lifters 30+: Build Strength, Save Time, Stay Consistent Training can feel overwhelming, especially with so many conflicting voices in the fitness world. In this episode, we break down the key principles of effective, time-efficient strength training to help you build physical freedom, longevity, and resilience—without wasting hours in the gym. Many lifters struggle to balance fitness with the demands of real life. Whether you're in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond, training smart is essential to staying strong, capable, and injury-free. This episode lays out the fundamental principles of resistance training, how to maximize results with minimal time, and why strength is about more than just muscle—it's about building a body that supports your long-term health and daily life. If you're looking to train efficiently while maintaining consistency, this episode is for you. The Key to Sustainable Strength Training One of the biggest factors in a successful fitness routine is sustainability. Many people create unrealistic training schedules that don't fit their lifestyle, leading to burnout or inconsistency. Instead of aiming for an unsustainable six-day-per-week program, consider what is truly realistic for your life. For most middle-aged lifters, two to three resistance training sessions per week—totaling around 90 minutes—can be incredibly effective. Aiming for 8,000-10,000 daily steps further supports overall fitness without adding excessive strain. Remember, consistency over time matters more than short bursts of intense training. By focusing on a realistic, sustainable plan, you set yourself up for long-term success rather than short-lived motivation that fades away. The Most Efficient Exercises for Strength & Longevity Not all exercises are created equal. To get the biggest bang for your buck in the gym, prioritize movements that work multiple muscle groups and joints simultaneously. These include: Squats (engage legs, core, and balance) Deadlifts (train posterior chain, grip strength, and overall power) Pressing Motions (like bench press or overhead press for upper body strength) These compound movements build muscle, strengthen connective tissues, and reinforce natural movement patterns essential for daily activities. If time is limited, focusing on these fundamental lifts ensures you're making the most of your gym sessions. Additionally, barbells are a powerful tool due to their scalability, availability, and ability to progressively overload—allowing you to steadily build strength over time. While machines have their place, free-weight movements generally offer more functional benefits for long-term fitness. Making Strength Training a Lifestyle, Not a Burden One of the biggest barriers to consistent training is the feeling that it's a burden. Instead of treating workouts as a chore, approach them as an investment in your future self. Think of training like cooking—just as a good meal balances salt, fat, acid, and heat, an effective program balances strength, mobility, and endurance. It's also important to trust the process. Results don't happen overnight, and progress requires faith in the system. Strength training is about more than aesthetics—it's about preserving function, preventing injuries, and feeling like a beast well into your later years. By establishing core training principles and sticking to them, you can cut through the noise of the fitness world and focus on what truly works for long-term health and physical freedom. In this episode, my guest is Pavel Tsatsouline, a world-renowned strength and conditioning coach, former military special forces training instructor, author, and founder of StrongFirst—an online school focused on “low-tech, high-concept” training to build strength for men and women of all fitness levels. We discuss the most effective and efficient ways to build strength, endurance, and flexibility. We cover bodyweight-only, free-weight, and machine-based protocols and describe training splits and lesser-known but highly effective ways to train, especially for people with limited time. We also discuss local versus systemic nervous system and muscle recovery, how to complete training sessions with increased energy, why training to “failure” is not advised, optimal rest-between-sets protocols to improve performance, and how to vary effort levels across each week and month to ensure regular progress. This episode brings you highly practical, science-supported, and real-world-tested training methods to build strength, endurance, and flexibility from one of the world's top experts.
