It's been said that “life is a journey.” Oftentimes, we don't get much more context than that and it can be hard to know what to do with that statement. Where are we trying to go? What are we after? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Well, the journey is what we make it. For that one, you can quote Kenneth Watson. He delivers this week's warstory and it is a powerful one. You'll hear how it is we settled on this topic when you listen to where his life led him and how drugs and alcohol played an important role for a long time. With failed relationships, jobs that weren't what they were supposed to be, the military, and the death of his mother, all making up a part of his journey. Today Kenneth is sober and able to recognize how each one of these things has placed him in a position to better serve those around him and just how much service plays a role in his recovery. Most of us found ourselves in the firm grip of addiction because we were seeking. Seeking comfort. Seeking relief. Something to take us away from the negative thoughts or feelings we have inside. In sobriety, we have an opportunity to seek in a new way. We seek a power greater than ourselves or a new relationship to the person we thought we were. Whatever it is, its in the seeking that we find the power. By remaining in a seeking state, we maintain an open mind to the positive influences around us and our relationships become more vibrant and strong. This week, were talking about seeking, a topic we got from the amazing warstory from Chad. Chad grew up with addiction all around him and it wasn't long before he found himself neck deep in waters of turmoil and despair. Tune in to hear what it took for him to finally realize there is a better way and how seeking has kept him in touch with God in a new and exciting way. Thanks Chad for telling your story! A wise man once said, “if you meet three assholes in a row, odds are, you're the asshole.” What did it take for you to realize that YOU were the problem? Tune in this week to hear us rant about what it took for us to see clearly, that it wasn't anybody or anything but our own making that was our undoing. This week's topic was inspired by an amazing story from Marco. What did it take for Marco to start buying in that his response to using and drinking wasn't normal? Tune in to find out and hear how, even in sobriety, he found God's path in his actions while paying for the things he'd done while actively using. Thank you, Marco, for sharing your story! What does it take to get us to finally realize we have a problem? That we can't just casually drink or use? A lot. Why is that? Oftentimes, we are holding on to the fantasy of what the substance CAN give us. We have reservations that keep us from fully admitting to our innermost selves that we are alcoholics or addicts and that we must find a way to abstain completely. Our topic this week, reservations in sobriety, comes to us from Mike. Mike shares his story about what it was like to grow up and use with his addict parent and how easy it became to justify using after a freak accident left him near death. Later, even after suffering severe consequences, Mike, like many of us, was determined to find a way to use and drink successfully. Today, he has finally let go of the idea of drinking/using like a gentleman and instead embraced the idea that a life in recovery brings him closer to being the man his family has always wanted and needed. A new year is a great opportunity to look back and reflect on moments and events to take stock. It's not always easy to see growth when we're constantly in a state of action but when we do, it's important to really soak it in. Gratitude is the fuel that can rocket us into the fourth dimension. This week, instead of a warstory, we're doing something a little different. Thanks to you, the fans, we have our first in-studio guest in our new space. We couldn't think of a better person for this christening of our new equipment than The Other Side of Hell's own Jordan Y. Listen in as the three of us share what the last year has been like and the opportunities that are always around us. Thanks to everyone who supported our GoFundMe. The alcoholic suffers from a spiritual malady, or so it says in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. What does that mean? And how can we change it? And how do we build and improve on that spiritual connection? This week, we're talking all about the spiritual connection, a topic inspired by the amazing warstory from Bill. Bill was the son of an alcoholic and grew up without a father. When his alcohol got out of control he said his first honest prayer and never drank a drop again. But, the alcohol was keeping him from being restless, irritable and discontent. And without it, it was only a matter of life, once again, became unmanageable. Tune into to hear what life is like for Bill today. Thanks Bill, for sharing your story! It doesn't matter where you're from, what your background is or who your mom is, if you're an alcoholic, odds are you've said a prayer or two. We don't always know who or what we're saying it to but there is something about it that we naturally turn to in times of need. So what is the power of prayer? Let's talk about it. This week's topic was inspired by an amazing warstory from Kelsie! Kelsie grew up sheltered but found her way into hardcore drugs through the way of pain pills after a series of accidents. After losing custody of her children and facing some hard charges, she was forced to sober up courtesy of the state. Though bitter at first, she can now see just how much this saved her life and is grateful for it. Listen to her story and hear her talk about her own journey with prayer, becoming a believer and the role it plays in her recovery. Thank you, Kelsie, for sharing your story! Let's face it. Recovery is work. Whether you're newly sober or finally doing something about your compulsive overeating, there is no doubt that the road ahead will be challenging. But you know what else is hard? An alcoholic still in the disease. Or someone who struggles with food navigating life in an oversized body. If we're lucky, we'll get to choose which path we take. Our topic, "choose your hard," is inspired by this week's warstory from RC Thurston. RC was athletic when he was young and got away with pretty much eating whatever he wanted. But later, when the pressures that can accompany adulthood weighed him down, he turned to food to cope. Now, he has found the courage to submit to the help that is being offered, and finally take getting healthy seriously. His life depends on it. Have you ever wondered what it's like to go through withdrawal from opiates or alcohol? Have you experienced it first hand? To say the least, it's a sobering up like none other and often times, can lead to some pretty monumental growth. But it sure doesn't feel that way when you're going through it! Just ask Ronny. In Ronny's warstory, you'll hear how quickly drugs become an everyday occurrence in his life, once he decided to partake. From there, his use would have him bouncing between moments of brief pleasure followed immediately by drastic and disastrous consequences. Hear about how he committed crime in a black out and woke up in jail. About how again and again rehab didn't work because he didn't care enough about himself to decide it was worth it. Nothing worked…. Until it did. Tune in to hear what it took to get past the fear and embrace a life he never expected. Thank you Ronny, for sharing your story! Maybe you've heard that the opposite of addiction is connection. Why is that? What is it about connecting with others that fills the void? Could “connection” be what we've been searching for all this time? This is the prompt to a great conversation, that is multi-faceted, humbling, and a good reminder of what really matters. We have a great warstory from Mike this week who's work in recovery inspired this topic. Mike worked in a workplace where drinking was a part of the culture. High stakes and million dollar accounts had him drinking to escape, so much so, that even traveling around the world wasn't enough to keep him loving what he was doing. Here what it took for him to finally wake up to the idea that something had to change and how he did it! As it turns out, recovery isn't easy. Maybe that's why it takes some of us so long to get here. But once we become desperate enough, we usually become willing, and that's half the battle. The other half? Putting in the work. This week, we have an amazing warstory from Kameron who, as an adolescent, had more felony convictions than pimples on his face. Hear the crazy places meth took him, how he got sober, and why today, he's willing to put in the work to stay sober. Life today may not be perfect, but it's easier than it used to be. It's hard to describe to someone who has never been there just what it feels like to be at your bottom. The word “fear” doesn't quite cover all the emotions that you feel. The big book of AA describes the Four Horseman as terror, bewilderment, frustration, and despair. Yeah, it feels like that. Unfortunately, just getting sober doesn't mean we don't still feel these things. However, today, we don't have to get drunk or high when we feel this way. Instead, today, we can recognize that we are on our way to a visit from the horsemen and hopefully, take the appropriate action to stop them in their tracks. This topic was inspired by the amazing warstory we got this week from Jordan. Hear how Jordan navigated his alcoholism while being a pilot and why he was no stranger to terror, bewilderment, frustration and despair. Today, through the grace of a higher power of his own understanding and a program of recovery, he lives his life to help others and stay out of his own way, which seems to be a good recipe for maintaining some sanity! Doesn't it feel like in order to get sober, we need to smash all the ideas we had about ourselves and the world around us? I know it did for us. Along with that, we had to admit that we were wrong about some things- a lot of things. But once we started believing that we could get sober, we realized anything was possible! This week's topic is inspired by our warstory from Cathie! From an early age, Cathie always gravitated towards the party lifestyle. When we first look at getting sober, in most cases, the pain of using has become so great that we are desperate to change. One thing they ask you in Alcoholics Anonymous is if you are now willing to go to any lengths to stay sober? The answer is confoundedly yes. But what about those of us who have been around for a minute? Are we still willing to go to any lengths when the pain of the last drink is so far behind us? And when the thought of using or drinking becomes less and less? And if we're NO longer willing to go to any lengths, then what does that mean for our sobriety and our new way of life? Let's talk about it. This week's topic is inspired by our incredible warstory from Mel. When you hear Mel recall his last drink, it becomes clear he is still willing to go to any lengths for sobriety, even though it was over 30 years ago. Perhaps there is more to surrendering that can carry past our initial “sobering up” moment and carry us into the life we've now found for ourselves. Early on in recovery, we learn just how sick we are. Hopefully, we also learn that its not our fault and that we don't have to stay that way. But a big pill to swallow can often be this idea of a higher power. What does it mean to have your own concept of a higher power? And why is it important to getting and staying sober? In this episode, the boys get into this sometimes controversial topic. This week's topic was inspired by an amazing warstory from Diana. Diana grew up in a house with two alcoholic parents. It took her a long time to learn just how dysfunctional things at home really were but when she did, she turned to substances to change the way she felt. Things escalated quickly, and before too long, Diana would find herself weening off one addiction by amplifying others. It wasn't until she surrendered and let go that she began her road of recovery. Tune in to hear her talk about her journey of letting go of a "church god" to come up with a concept that worked for her and helped her to stay sober. Today, recovery principles and recovery disciplines come first. Thank you Diana for sharing your story! If there is one thing we hear in everyone's story, it's that they never felt “comfortable in their own skin.” This will have us seeking validation from just about anything and put ourselves in some vulnerable situations all in an attempt to be a part of something outside of ourselves. Our warstory this week comes from Alan, who inspired this topic. Listen as he describes the restlessness he felt as a child, and the relief that came when he finally found the solution. Alan found comfort in athletics, the rave scene, the gang life, and now, recovery. Here how he lives his life today by serving others and turning over his will to God. Guilt and shame were often the bedrock of our bottoms. Our behavior is often so shameful that the last thing we want to do is talk about it outloud. Only when we have recovered and shared that story honestly to others who are struggling do we begin to know the value of our stories. This week's warstory is a special one. Britnee is not only a grateful food addict but also Cameron's sister. When you hear her talk about what it was like to compromise her morals and relationships for food, you'll be sure to see the similarities in our addictions. It's those similarities, and the recovery that is spoken of after, that we begin to feel hope. Hope becomes the bedrock of our recovery. Our stories have power, even if we don't always see it. When we stop and reflect on everything we did in our past, the crazy, the insane, the absolutely mind-blowing behavior, it's a wonder that we're still here. Today's topic is about that! How are we not dead? This topic was inspired by our warstory this week from Dan. Dan is a helluva guy in the community, boots on the ground working to help others get clean and sober. But before Dan was doing any of that, he was living a life that few could handle. Despite the many opportunities for death and disaster, he is still around today to tell the story. For that we are grateful. Thanks Dan for sharing your story! Check out our sponsors. You ever have those moments where all the sudden, you can see clearly what it is that needs to change? We've had many. And we're grateful for them all. Every moment of sobriety started with a moment of clarity. Let's talk about it. This topic is inspired by this week's warstory from Marsha. Marsha spent a lot of her youth with an alcoholic Dad. Drugs and alcohol were just a part of life and eventually, she would find hers engulfed with the drama and panic that accompanies them. Suddenly, a moment of clarity spurred her to take some action and it began a process that would eventually lead her to a sober life, a better way of living, and a life beyond measure. The boys are back with another great episode. This week, they share on the struggle of acknowledging our wins. They say humility is a cornerstone of recovery. But its not always easy to recognize the difference between being humble and having low self esteem. Through the work we do in recovery, often we're able to take a "right sized" view of ourselves. Part of that is acknowledging our accomplishments and allowing them to be. This topic was inspired by Chris who shares his amazing warstory. Get lost in his accent and let his story hit you in a way that fills you with hope. Listen and you'll see why we chose this topic after hearing his story. Thanks Chris for sharing your amazing story! This week's episode is a deep one. We get into what's happened over the last year with the guys and why the topic of "Overcoming Hopelessness" makes perfect sense. Willy gets into how he relapsed with 10 years of sobriety and what it was like to come clean with his loved ones and recovery peeps. Cameron talks about finally getting his ass kicked enough to join a food program so he can stop "chewing his alcohol." As usual, we have a great warstory from Heidi who inspired this topic! We sat on this one for some time and it's fair to say, it's worth the wait. Hear her share on how things got started and how being comfortable in her own skin, required a lot of external substances. Finally, she had the spark of hope ignited by a friend who had been through it, and it was enough for her to believe she too, could change her life. Thank you, Heidi, for sharing your story! According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics the number of people prosecuted for human trafficking offenses has more than doubled between 2011 and 2021. The National Human Trafficking hotline reports that it has identified more than 82,000 instances of human trafficking involving close to 165,000 victims. Researching human trafficking is the focus of this episode of Stats+Stories with our guests Nancy Hagan and Margaret Henderson. Nancy Hagan is currently a senior research associate at the University of North Carolina School of Social Work with a long history of engaging in both social science research and community centered programming. She came to UNC having served as a policy analyst on the North Carolina Human Trafficking Commission, and prior to that as a senior research analyst on Project No Rest, a UNC-based, federally funded five year initiative designed to create awareness and response to human trafficking across North Carolina. She has also held faculty positions at North Carolina State University. For almost two decades, Nancy allied with others to design, direct, and deliver programming to underserved rural residents of North Carolina, with a focus on working alongside stakeholders from immigrant and farmworker communities. Through this work, she developed expertise around the issue of human trafficking, both sex and labor. She continues to work alongside vulnerable communities to address exploitation in her current role at the UNC School of Social Work. Margaret Henderson is an expert on facilitation and human services, specifically in cultivating resources and strategies to reduce rates of elder abuse and human trafficking. As a faculty member, her current work primarily includes facilitating public meetings and assisting local governments to address human trafficking and elder abuse. As a former director of the Public Intersection Project, she worked on research and communication strategies that strengthen cross-sector working relationships for more effective public problem-solving. In facilitation work, she specialized in the practical implications of managing cross-organizational collaborations, community programs, and nonprofit organizations.
We're back!! After a long hiatus the boys are back with a new look, new episode and new sobriety dates? Listen to find out. This week we have an awesome story from someone you may all know. Dave from the Dopey podcast got with us to share his experience strength and hope. Here just how dark things can be before the dawn, and know that no matter how far down you fall, you can always get back up if you're willing to accept the help being offered to you. You are sure to get something out of it. Dave's story inspired the topic, "identifying with the disease." Though some of us may fight it, eventually we begin to make our using and drinking a part of our identity. We find ourselves among great artist and poets who may have influenced us growing up. Unfortunately, building our identity around the addiction can make it that much harder to surrender. After all, without the drugs and alcohol (or food, sex, gambling, etc) who am I? Get sober and find out. Anything's got to be better than the way we were. Thanks Dave for sharing your story! Listen to the Dopey Podcast anywhere you get your podcast. It's a great place to laugh about the crazy things we used to do!! Glad we're not there today! January is National Human Trafficking and Slavery Prevention Month, a designated time to raise awareness about this devastating issue and combat it through various efforts. The timeline of human trafficking is long. For as long as humans have existed, human trafficking has existed. It occurs in every corner of the world, and thanks to the internet, the issue is no longer contained by physical boundaries.Estimates suggest tens of thousands of children go missing from foster care annually. A 2023 audit by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found over 34,000 cases of missing foster children were not reported to authorities.Sources/Articles:https://www.blackandmissinginc.com/missing-person-details/?mp_id=4905 https://wisevoter.com/state-rankings/human-trafficking-statistics-by-state/ https://www.acf.hhs.gov/otip/fact-sheet/resource/fshumantrafficking https://www.eeoc.gov/youth/learn-how-recognize-possible-human-trafficking https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/dozens-of-runaways-at-risk-for-human-trafficking-rescued-hcso-says/ar-AA1fmm7Y https://www.statista.com/topics/4238/human-trafficking/#topicOverview https://bjs.ojp.gov/sites/g/files/xyckuh236/files/media/document/htdca22.pdf Here are some resources you can explore for further information:National Center for Missing & Exploited Children: https://missingkids.org/ The Annie E. Red Hill defueling process enters its next phase; Resources for victims of human trafficking; Hawaiian musician Henry Kapono kicks off a new series of concerts
Human trafficking often strikes us as being rare and extremely and many people believe that mostly happens in third world countries. Certainly, it is true that for many third world countries, many people live in poverty and often their children are kidnapped or seduced into situations where they believe everyone will have a better life. However, human trafficking is also very prevalent in the U.S. and California is most often the number one state for cases. The victims and perpetrators are diverse in how they operate, but the one thing every case has in common is that victims are exploited in ways that makes it very difficult for them to recover. During this show we will talk about the many types of trafficking and pimping. We will look at family pimping, guerilla pimping, boyfriend pimping, that takes place here in the Inland Empire. We will also explore how foreign national trafficking is taking place in our communities. And we will look at how foreign national trafficking is often connected to other crimes including minor labor trafficking, fraudulent credit card trafficking, large scale shop lifting rings, stolen vehicles, and illegal pot grows. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/million-kids/support
Stepping into the shadows of a world that many of us hope to never encounter, Angela Bernard and Cindy Lopez with Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County join me to uncover the grim realities of human trafficking in our backyards. These brave voices from Place of Hope and Crime Stoppers shine a light on the darkness, revealing how their partnership and an anonymous tip line are not just tools, but lifelines in the community's fight against this pervasive crime. We discuss the surge in trafficking tips, the interplay of fraud and narcotics, and the power of events like the Light in the Shadows Luncheon in rallying awareness and support. This episode is more than just a discussion; it's a tribute to resilience. Prepare to be moved by the personal battles of human trafficking survivors, whose stories are both heartbreaking and hopeful. From the labor trafficking of three siblings to Doug's and Tabitha's agonizing paths through exploitation, these narratives are testament to the importance of every tip reported. We discuss the increased rewards for tips leading to arrests, and how each piece of information weaves together a larger picture that aids law enforcement in their pursuit for justice. Our journey concludes by exploring the essence of Crime Stoppers' mission and its synergies with Palm Beach's public safety initiatives. We delve into the critical importance of anonymity in crime reporting, underscoring how it empowers individuals to speak up and potentially save lives. As we set our sights on 2024, aiming for heightened community interaction and education, I invite you to become an Ambassador of Hope and join the conversation on social media to ensure the safety and bright future of every child.Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County links:More information on Cruisin' for Crime Stoppers ride on Jan. 27, 2024Report a crime OnlineYou can help. Current immigration policies are responsible for an out-of-control southern border and for lax guest worker programs, both of which are major contributors to the human trafficking industry in the United... It can seem like sometimes the more sobriety you have, the less complicated your life becomes. Turns out, that's not always the case. Oftentimes those of us who have been in the recovery game for some time, have had to go through several moments of redefining ourselves and reshaping our sobriety. We learn what we need to hold on to and what we can add to our daily reprieve. Whether you're 3 days sober or 10 years sober, the importance of honesty however, can not be understated. In this episode we are joined by Fausto, the one and only. Fausto first came on our radar as someone who had immersed themselves in the recovery community and quickly became an inspirational voice for many. Today he shares some of how he has had to maintain his honesty even when he finds he is down or not feeling so great. Turns out, its more normal than we think it is to not be uppity and high spirited every second. Funny to hear the way our brains can trick us into thinking a lie would serve us better than the truth. This week's warstory comes from Trevor who is brutally honest in his telling of constant relapse and half measures. Hear him talk about what life is like in sobriety compared to life in the throes of the disease. He has a way of accepting life today how it is and doesn't fool himself into thinking he is something he is not; i.e. a “normal” drinker. Thank you Trevor for sharing your story with us! We learned a lot from it! Stay up to date with Fausto by following his IG @hopedealerfausto Check out Fausto's warstory in one of our earlier episodes! https://youtu.be/wed0CbRnfjU Thanks Hellions! What does it mean to have a recovery mindset? Well, think of it this way; when we were in the thick of it, all we did was think about using. We were constantly obsessing, obtaining, or using our DOC. Today we fill that time with the tools from recovery. Service work, community engagement, and helping others are just a few things that can help us in maintaining sobriety and keeping a recovery mindset. This week's topic is inspired by our warstory from Monica. She has found a beautiful group of people who support her in her journey as she establishes a solid foundation in recovery. Monica's use of pain pills escalated and before long she realized it had taken over. Finding a community and deciding enough was enough has given her the strength she needs to help others who may be struggling the same way by sharing honestly what her journey has been like. It's easy to think we keep failing at this recovery thing when we're quick to go back to those old habits. Sometimes after multiple failed attempts to quit, we can feel hopeless. But all is not lost. Those attempts to quit are not in vain. They all make up the stepping stones of recovery. This week we're joined by Aubrey who sits in as guest host while we hear a warstory from Courtney. Courtney spent a lot of time lost in a world of drugs and alcohol. Time with the wrong people in horrific situations filled her with trauma but it wasn't until she experienced a close personal loss that she was able to begin to dig her way out of hell and into a life worth living. Hear her talk about how every failure brought her closer to sobriety. Follow Courtney on tiktok, IG and Twitter @courtnology Thanks Hellions! Remember you are the most important part of the show. Alcohol free. Sober. Recovering Alcoholic. What's the difference? And does it really make a difference? Today we're joined by Arielle Dyment who joined us as a special guest host from Peru. We're getting into labels in recovery. When we're new to the recovery space, we can get really caught up in the minushia. Often, the overwhelming nature of “what to do” can keep a lot of us sick. We invite you to put down the labels and pick up something useful, like a mentor or sober coach. The labels do not serve us. This topic was inspired by a warstory from Tessa. Tessa spent most of her life thinking she was a normal drinker having gotten caught up in the mommy wine culture. When the pandemic hit, her drinking quickly escalated very quickly. She was seeking treatment to discover what was wrong with her but it soon became apparent that she had to do something about her drinking. This thrust her down a path she could have never anticipated, sober now for 18 months. Tessa and Arielle are both involved with a sober app called Lived which is designed to help those who think they may have a drinking problem but not sure how best to address it. Lived has information from Sober coaches and people in recovery all over the world that will help the sober curious know how best to address their drinking. When we're in victim mode, it can be easy to think that someone is going to come along and save you. But what if we're wrong? What if nobody is coming? Do we face death or do we become our own hero? That's what this week's guest has done. Katie is a domestic abuse survivor who has taken her power back and thrives in a big way. She joined us in studio to talk to us about being your own hero, what it takes, and why saving yourself can help you grow into the person you never thought you could be. Check out Katie's warstory and follow her on IG at @klockhart8 for more of her fiery inspiration! Thanks Hellions! Remember you are the most important part of the show.
