For book lovers, there's no such thing as too many books! But to spark that love, everyone needs access to them – a reality that remains out of reach for many communities where children can't easily access public libraries, and schools are strapped for resources.   The literacy crisis in America is real. According to the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), only 43% of U.S. fourth graders scored at or above a proficient level in reading. Studies also show that students with greater access to books perform better academically than their peers who lack this simple resource.   That's why, this October, in honor of National Book Month, SONIC Drive-In is turning its passion for literacy into action. You're invited to interview some of the people working to spread the love of reading and bring books into the hands of those who need them most.   SONIC donates a portion of every drink purchase back to support local students and teachers through its Limeades for Learning initiative. For National Book Month, the SONIC Foundation is teaming up with educational nonprofit partner DonorsChoose, donating $1.25 million to fund reading and literacy projects submitted by public school teachers for the “Fill Every Shelf” campaign.   But that's not all – SONIC is also partnering with Little Free Library to bring 25 free “take a book, leave a book” libraries to communities in need across the country.   Stuart Brown, Executive Director of the SONIC Foundation, and Shavawn Simmons, representing Family Literacy of Georgia on behalf of Little Free Library,  discuss with CONN how you can make a difference – from inspiring new readers to supporting literacy in their own backyards.

He is also the author of the Suffering and the Christian Life series published by Crossway, including When the Stars Disappear and Give Me Understanding That I May Live.Mark spoke once before on the podcast about suffering, but in this episode we turn our attention to the important and vital topic of reading. In America today, 54% of adults read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level (Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy) and in Central Florida 1 in 4 read at or below a 5th grade level (The Adult Literacy League).Additionally, 14% of Americans in 2021 read their Bible daily while only 10% did so in 2022 (American Bible Society, The State of the Bible USA 2022 Survey). Lastly, Ligonier Ministries' bi-annual State of Theology Survey shows that 53% of U.S. adults believe that the Bible is not literally true, the first time there has been a majority who believe that in the survey, and up from 41% in 2014.The numbers don't lie, the poor state of reading and literacy in America today is alarming, especially among Christians. Many factors are contributing to America's literacy woes, including a plethora of distractions, celebrities discouraging reading, people's inclination to listen to audio-books instead of reflecting on written words, and a reliance on transactional (blogs, Tweets, short form content) instead of transformative (physical books, long form content) reading.Dr. Talbot discusses all of this and more in the episode. He also considers ways of reading well in an age of distraction including helpful tools and tips for training our minds to read and comprehend better. As Mark points out, understanding takes time and effort. It requires that we get outside ourselves to grow. However, when we take the time to allow books to work on us, they produce a new kind of life in us (Matt. 4:4).We also discuss the benefits of reading, how to both approach and read the Bible well, and we even look at thoughts from great minds past like Marcel Proust and John Milton to see what they can teach us about reading.Lastly, we consider methods for teaching reading in church and classroom settings, including an illuminating talk about how to study the Bible and some of our favorite book recommendations.Mark's insights provide a great synthesis on the current state of reading and what we can all do to become great thinkers. We look forward to having Dr. Talbot back on the podcast soon.

“The essence of family literacy is that parents are supported as the first teachers of their children.” Family Literacy is the idea that long after diapers and baby steps, our children have so much to learn by watching, observing, and collaborating with trusted adults at home, particularly when it comes to building a strong foundation for reading with confidence. On this episode, we dive deeper into this idea and share the how and why of building and sustain robust family literacy practices. Joining us on this journey are Lauren Bardwell, Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning Solutions at NWEA, and Shiji Mathew, Senior ELA Content Specialist at NWEA.

Family Literacy Day is this Thursday, January 27th, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family, and this year's Family Literacy Day theme is: Learning in the Great Outdoors! Raffi is a perfect person to help us come together to celebrate and approach learning and growing together with kindness, caring, and play. A renowned singer known by his first name alone, Raffi is a pioneer in quality recordings for children on his independent label, Troubadour. For millions of fans, Raffi's music is the soundtrack of their childhoods, and they have taken his signature song “Baby Beluga” to heart. In 2010, he founded the Raffi Foundation for Child Honouring—to promote an integrated philosophy that views honouring children as the best way to create sustainable, peacemaking cultures. Raffi has received the Order of Canada, the Order of BC, the U.N. Earth Achievement Award, and four honorary degrees. In summer 2020 Raffi released a 40th -anniversary version of “Baby Beluga” with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. That was followed by “For All You Do”, in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Lindsay Munroe. This song is a musical expression of gratitude to essential workers during the pandemic and was a fundraiser for Direct Relief. Can seniors save the world through social activism in their life after retirement? Dr. Thelma Reese thinks so. And, she knows so, too. She's the co-author of the new book How Seniors Are Saving The World: Retirement Activism to the Rescue! with BJ Kittredge. While we often see examples of senior volunteering, this book highlights seniors who are activists in various ways on a range of issues. Seniors Helping Others in Retirement The book tells the stories of seniors from various walks of life, ages, and backgrounds who are doing just that. They are investing their time, energy, and passion into causes that matter— and they’re making a difference. Whether it's volunteering or activism that's a fit for you, you'll find these stories inspiring ways to get involved - in ways big and small. We discuss: Why she wrote this new book What the diverse group of 24 seniors profiled in the book has in common Some of the stories and causes detailed in the book of seniors changing the world What she thinks we can learn from the pandemic How her thinking has evolved during the pandemic on topics like ageism Why intergenerational relationships are so important The story of a new intergenerational course she's creating with a group at Temple University and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Philadelphia Her advice for seniors who want to get engaged in saving the world Dr. Reese joins us today from Center City Philadelphia. ______________________________ Bio Thelma Reese, B.S., M.Ed., Ed.D., all from Temple University, began teaching third grade in 1954.  When her two daughters were in school, she began her graduate studies in Educational Psychology, was awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship, and was active first in the field of Reading Psychology and Education.  She taught as an adjunct professor at Temple University and Arcadia University. When her children were grown, she became a professor of English and director of special programs at Community College of Philadelphia. After early retirement at CCP, she created the Advisory Council for Hooked on Phonics and was its spokesperson in the '90's. In that role, and as director of the Mayor's Commission on Literacy for the City of Philadelphia, she appeared frequently on television and hosted a cable show in Philadelphia. She was a founder of Philadelphia Young Playwrights, chaired the Board of Children’s Literacy Initiative, and organized the World Symposium on Family Literacy at UNESCO in Paris in 1994. She is co-author, with Barbara M. Fleisher, of The New Senior Woman: Reinventing the Years Beyond Mid-Life (Rowman & Littlefield).  Their second book, The New Senior Man:  Exploring New Horizons, New Opportunities was published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2017.  Her latest book is How Seniors Are Saving the World:  Retirement Activists to the Rescue!, co-authored by BJ Kittredge, published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2020. Reese and Fleisher created the blog www.ElderChicks.com in 2012, which is ongoing since the passing of Dr. Fleisher in October of 2016. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband, Harvey Reese, who is an artist and the author of several books, including How to License Your Million Dollar Idea (John Wiley, publisher). ____________________________ Wise Quotes  On Activism vs. 'Clicktivism' "I think activism really is just doing something that goes beyond thinking about it. I love the word that I found somewhere clicktivism, where we just click on or like something on Facebook. It goes another step. In some ways, I think we just redefined activism tremendously with the pandemic. I think seniors just by staying in, have been activists - just by not making things more dangerous for themselves and others. You can take it to the level  It doesn't want the accolades, doesn't want the notoriety, doesn't want to be noticed necessarily, but wants to make sure that it's happening, something good is happening - and how to part of ...

Startup Whisperer (0:00:00) It's a dream that's been in the back of your mind for years, but your stable job and feeding your family seem to get in the way of starting your own business. But what if you were able to make your dream a reality?  Dr. Okasana Malysheva and Joe Merrill are the co-founders of Sputnik ATX and their mission is to fund and mentor other entrepreneurs who might never have access to the capital they need to get their companies off the ground otherwise. Let Them Play (0:16:25) Parent's all want the same things for their kids—don't they? We want them to be successful, happy, well adjusted—all that jazz. But what can we do to make sure that our kids get there? It might not be the first thing you think of when you're worrying about your child's development, but playtime is really so important for young minds. Here to tell us a little more about why that is and how we can make sure we're encouraging good, productive playtime for our kids is Dr. Magdalena Battles, author of Let Them Play! The Importance of Play and 100 Child Development Activities. Bibliotherapy (0:30:51) I think everyone needs therapy at some point in their lives, and therapeutic experiences can come to us in many different shapes and forms. Today, we're talking about a type of therapy that's a little out of the box. Instead of laying on a couch and spilling your feelings to a doctor, can you gain therapy and healing from laying on a couch with your favorite book? Here to tell us more about the practice of bibliotherapy is Nancy Knapp professor and co-author of The Psychology of Reading: Theory and Applications.  Raising a Reader (0:49:22) There's nothing better than getting lost in a good book. There's nothing quite like just being able to be totally immersed in a story, is there? As parents, of course we want our kids to enjoy this experience as well. But what can we do if our kids just don't seem that interested in reading? Here to help us learn how we can raise readers is Janssen Bradshaw, former children's librarian, founder of Everyday Reading and a free course on Raising a Reader. Activating Your Imagination (1:03:10) Imagination is something that is encouraged in children, but often forgotten in adulthood. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” So maybe it's time to tune into our childhood selves and figure out how to activate our imaginations. Scott Jeffrey helps successful people access their higher potential. He wrote an article about accessing the imagination that caught our attention, so we invited him on the show to discuss how we, as adults, can access our imaginations. Mini Book Club (1:19:03) Rachel Wadham, host of Worlds Awaiting, shares the best books to give as gifts. Family Literacy (1:27:44) What if you weren't able to complete a job application, understand important food labels, or even read to your child? About half of the United States adult population possesses literacy skills that are described as “challenged” and find these everyday tasks difficult to complete. We live in such a literacy-based world that we thought this issue was important to bring up. In 2002, Michelle and David Baldacci started the Wish You Well Foundation – a non-profit organization with the mission of supporting family literacy in the United States. We're joined by David to talk about it.

Natural disasters tend to impact us when we least expect it, and if we're not prepared for what could happen, we could be in big danger.  Professional Environmental Health Scientist Chris Smoot is joining us on the show to talk with us about emergency preparedness and how we can be ready for any potential dangers. Decorating a Kid's Room (0:14:57) Do you remember your childhood room? That room was a really important part of your young identity and defined you and your style for years to come. But if you are a parent now, you know that decorating a kid's room can be tough, especially as they go from liking princesses and unicorns one year to loving popstars and sparkles the next. So how can you and your child decorate their bedroom in a way that works for both of you? We'll talk about kids' bedrooms and decorating them with a style that lasts. Joining us is interior designer Meagan Macievic. How to Make Guests Feel Comfortable (0:34:24) There's nothing more uncomfortable than staying over at someone's house and feeling like you're not welcome. Another uncomfortable moment is when you're staying at someone's house, get out of the shower and find that there are no towels in sight. Now there's not much you can do in either of these situations, but if you are the one hosting (especially this holiday season), there are lots of things you can do to help your guests feel at home. We have Allison Bean, the editorial director of The Spruce, to share the ins and outs of being a good host. Holiday Heart Health (0:50:34) Did you know that people are more likely to have a heart attack during the winter than any other time of year? While experts aren't quite sure why this is, a new study shows that it might be more at the fault of carbs than fats. So with this new information in mind—how should we adjust our holiday eating plans? Here to share his tips for keeping your heart healthy throughout the holidays is Dr. Jonny Bowden or the “Nutrition Myth Buster,” expert on weight loss, nutrition and health. Family Literacy (1:06:30) What if you weren't able to complete a job application, understand important food labels, or even read to your child? About half of the United States adult population possesses literacy skills that are described as “challenged” and find these everyday tasks difficult to complete. We live in such a literacy-based world that we thought this issue was important to bring up. In 2002, Michelle and David Baldacci started the Wish You Well Foundation – a non-profit organization with the mission of supporting family literacy in the United States. We're joined by David to talk about it. Binge-Watching Snacks (1:20:31) Odds are, if you're watching tv, you're craving something to munch on. Well we're Talkin' ‘Bout Snacks with Josh and Amy, and we're bringing you ideas for the best things to snack on while binge-watching your favorite shows. Josh Bingham is our sweet expert, who would eat dessert for every meal of the day if he could, and Amy Biedel is our savory expert, who believes that dill pickles are the only true pickles! Weekend Review (1:29:09) Lisa and Richie share what exciting events are happening across the country and what new movies you should go see.

Dr Denny Taylor is an author, researcher and educator living in New York City. She has published 19 books—fiction and nonfiction—and is a co-founder of Garn Press, a publishing house with a focus on social conscience. Denny is widely credited with giving rise to family literacy, a concept UNESCO uses today as an organizing principle for supporting vulnerable populations all over the world. In 2004, she was elected Member of the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame and has been nominated for a number of prestigious awards, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1997 and, most recently, the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. On this episode, Gideon and Richard talk to Denny about her work in Family Literacy, her involvement with UN, and a number of the major issues facing society today relating to education, technology, and climate change. They also discuss two of Denny’s books; ‘Rosie’s Umbrella’, a book inspired by Denny and her mother’s own experiences of life in the Welsh mining towns of the early 20th century, and ‘Split Second Solution’, a dystopian tale set in NYC in 2022 that foreshadows the rise of Trump, the 'me-too' movement, and the wide mis-application of artificial intelligence.

The National Center for Family Literacy reports that research shows children’s literacy levels are strongly linked to the literacy levels of their parents, especially their mothers. Literate adults raise healthier and more successful children. The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 defines literacy as an individual’s ability to read, write, speak English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one’s goals, and develop one’s knowledge and potential..  The term functional illiteracy refers to those individuals who, even knowing how to read and write simple phrases, do not have the basic aptitudes to satisfy the demands of their daily needs nor to develop themselves personally and professionally. Indy Reads is a literacy nonprofit transforming lives in Indianapolis. Indy Writes Books, unites local authors in a cross-genre anthology celebrating the love of reading.
