Books vs Films, Party Girls vs Kink Kings, two manic festivals go live on the same night this Thursday and that's culture. Smut Night at the Red Rattler raises money for the important and incomparable f*ck palace Hedon House at exactly the same time Garden Reflexxx presents Party Girl at the State Library of NSW. Smut Night programmer Katie Winten and Hedon House's Gala Vanting join Andj and Jen for a very special self-serving episode of Movies Movies Movies to discuss porn, Anora, invincible grapevines and show of a douche that Apichatpong signed in Bangkok. Sit back, strap on and join us IRL this Thursday at two of the most improbably locations for film screenings available in this city. Peace!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Christmas time and the school holidays would bring back memories of long train journeys to far flung parts of Queensland, for many people. The link between country and regional towns, and the smaller townships, was the railmotor. For many decades in Queensland, the small red painted 45 horsepower AEC motors (based on a London bus design), ‘red rattlers', or the later incarnations of the ‘Tin Hares', through to the streamlined 2000 class ‘Silver Bullets' provided an important connection for many Queenslanders to the railway townships. School children made their journey to school on the ‘RMs', special stops in regional towns were made for intending passengers, and places such as Cooktown, and Normanton became a ‘railmotor' dependent railway from the late 1920s. Our Queensland Rail History podcast, ‘Red Rattler's and ‘Silver Bullets', will look back on the distinctive petrol- and diesel-powered railmotors that were such an iconic part of the Queensland Railways throughout the 20th century. In this episode of the podcast we talk with Glen Watson who at the time was Officer in Charge at Normanton and driving the Gulflander. He shares many stories and personal experiences to do with his time both in Queensland and around the world for Queensland Rail. You can find images to go along with the episode here: https://queenslandrail.intelligencebank.com/customshare/index/0MXzp?trackingId=JnpAl

Tenille shares the story of their Granny Pam, a fierce woman who was one of the very first air hostesses working for South African Airways and who was instrumental in making Tenille the person they are today. Born in Namibia to a South African and a Brit, Tenille Rogers inherited a love for singing and performing from their musical parents. They have performed around the world in bands, in theatre, in cabaret, doing weird burlesque, drag Kinging and doing a lot of karaoke. They are currently on the board of the Red Rattler theatre and do volunteer work for other charities around Sydney. This was their first time telling a story since they won the year 7 Eisteddfod for memorising and reciting “The Aardvark” by Roald Dahl, a tale where a spoiled American boy is eaten by his pet due to a miscommunication. There was never a universe in which such a strange band with such a strange sound and an unmentionable name would be successful. Except, of course, this one. A wholly DIY freak-folk expedition, Crywank have been streamed millions of times and faced a fervent cult fanbase wherever they would show their faces. How exactly did two working-class English punks make such a considerable dent? Vocalist/guitarist James Clayton and drummer Dan Watson (with special guest melodica player Joel Hernandez) offered up a guided tour before their last-ever Sydney show at the Red Rattler theatre towards the end of 2019. Expect ongoing tales of musical boxes, travel disasters and a testicular scare in the midst of an emotional rollercoaster. Yes, all of those stories are real. For your chance to win a vinyl copy of RVG's new album Feral, thanks to Our Golden Friend, email barbandspod@gmail.com with your name, address and favourite episode of Bar Bands. How do you get out of your own way and make your best work? Artist Missy Gilbert AKA ØFFËRÎNGŠ says its by focusing on WHO the work is for. By dedicating it and setting intention for the work, it allows you to get out of your own way and channel your greatest level of focus to maximise your creative output. Missy is an artist, though she has only just started to call herself that - after 21 years working as a freelance creative. I wanted to talk to Missy about why it's so hard to claim that title - especially given she is one of the most successful creatives I know working across events (the immersive dining behemoth 'Hyper Real' in conjunction with Chin Chin Restaurant), Performance Art (QVB After Dark, Sydney) and she even runs a 2000 square meter artists space, The Nest Creative Space in Alexandria, Sydney! Missy shares much wisdom and magic - enjoy! For more on Missy: https://www.instagram.com/i_am_offerings/ For more on Dan: https://www.instagram.com/danbrophy/

Growing up as an awkward music nerd in New Jersey, Lauren Denitzio never saw themselves fronting a band or playing punk rock. In 2017, they've done it twice - first as part of the crucially-underrated outfit The Measure [SA], whose album Notes was twice as good as most punk albums released in the 2010s and got half the recognition. In their second act, Worriers, Denitzio has further explored the semantics of the genre. With a slew of friends along for the ride, Denitzio has turned Worriers into something fearless, fun and fiery. Three chords and the truth has never sounded better. In September, Denitzio toured Australia for the very first time. Before a show at the Red Rattler in Sydney, they explained the key differences between basement shows and proper gigs, the freedom of a musical collective and being a polite punk. Worriers' third album, Survival Pop, is out now via Sideonedummy/Cooking Vinyl. You can stream, download and purchase the album here: http://worriers.bandcamp.com/album/survival-pop/ Follow Lauren/the band on Twitter and Instagram: @worriersmusicFollow the podcast on Twitter: @BarBandsPodFollow David on Twitter: @DJYwrites
"I should warn you," prefaces Lincoln Le Fevre of Lincoln Le Fevre and the Insiders at the start of his third album, Come Undone: "I'm not built to last." Still, if his two decades and change of playing music prove anything, it's the complete opposite. Whether rousing a pub full of punks with his sing-alongs or playing hardcore punk in Outright, Le Fevre has constantly found new ways to keep his musical endeavours interesting and engaging. His journey takes him from the school hall to the bar and all the way across to the mainland, where the ex-pat Tasweigan now calls home. While playing Sydney with Outright for Damnation 2017, Le Fevre took some time in the park next to the Red Rattler to shoot the shit and give one of the most honest, interesting chats this podcast has ever seen. Come Undone is out now via Poison City Records. Buy it at the links below.
