We revisit the conversation I had with Gus Berger about his covid project The Lost City of Melbourne which has proved so popular you can still catch .it on the big screen.
As cities and communities all over the world look to new models of disaster preparedness and response, how do we successfully activate a whole of community approach where everyone has a role to play and disaster management services are working with not for the community? In this episode of Creative Responders, we'll hear what happened when the City of Melbourne tackled this question and engaged artists in the co-design and facilitation of a preparedness exercise, working with the North Melbourne community to imagine better models of response and recovery. The 2022 disaster preparedness simulation, Exercise Torrent, was a collaboration between City of Melbourne's Emergency Management Department and Arts House that utilised an arts-based approach to develop a scenario for emergency management professionals, service providers and community organisations to interact with. City of Melbourne's Emergency Management Coordinator, Christine Drummond, takes us inside the process of developing the exercise, how it played out on the day, and how bringing the arts into the process provided a different lens for people to participate more readily. We hear from artist facilitators Jonathan Craig and Dr Jen Rae and Arts House Creative Producer, Sarah Rowbottam, about how creative methodologies provide a layer of depth to the relational aspects of exercises like this, offering a window of opportunity into areas of preparedness sometimes overlooked by traditional processes, like accessibility. The project provides a model for how creativity and the arts can support community engagement strategies and provide entry points for practicing the skills of collaboration that will help us to better respond when a disaster occurs.Links / Further Reading:Arts Househttps://www.artshouse.com.au The Refuge Project https://www.artshouse.com.au/artist-opportunities/refuge/ Together by Richard Sennetthttps://www.penguin.com.au/books/together-9780141022109 Community Engagement for Disaster Resilience Handbookhttps://knowledge.aidr.org.au/resources/handbook-community-engagement/ Creative Responders in Conversation with Jen Raehttps://creativerecovery.net.au/creative-responders-podcast/in-conversation-series/s2-episode-10/ Creative Responders in Conversation with Kate Sulan https://creativerecovery.net.au/creative-responders-podcast/in-conversation-series/s1-episode-8/ Hosted on Acast. The Victorian capital has long touted its position as a city of architecture, design, and 'liveability' — and it was consecutively ranked as the world's most liveable city between 2011 to 2017. But in the time since, its shine has diminished somewhat, with many — including the City of Melbourne's Deputy Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece — saying that Melbourne had allowed too much "crap" to be built, resulting in nothing more than "spreadsheets in the sky". Councillor Reece joins Blueprint to discuss a council-approved design excellence program aimed to raise the bar for Melbourne architecture.

After an intense fashion photo shoot in New York came to a crashing end, leaving Parker in a wheelchair and off work for 11 months, he had to come home and re-think about the direction his photography career was heading. He knew the fashion industry in Australia isn't at the same scale as the U.S. so food was his next best bet. He came back to Australia where he began shooting for Broadsheet and Concrete Playground and for restaurants like Hartsyard, the Vue De Monde group and Stokehouse. Currently stuck in Melbourne during the intense lockdown, Parker and I chat over the phone about the changing culture of food photography between the 'old school' and 'new school' photographers, with the recent boom in food bloggers who are creating a divide in what some restaurants really expect from professional food photographers. We chat about the pressures of maintaining a food and lifestyle photography business during COVID19 and how restaurants are having to work around the issue of putting out recent content while adherring to the stage 4 lockdown currently in Melbourne. His latest project (as of September 2020), which was funded by the City of Melbourne, explores the daily lives of people already suffering from compromised immune systems, in a time where social distancing and personal health is at the utmost of importance.http://www.sissyscreens.com/photography/photography-series-invisible-project/ Be sure to tune in, it's a great reflective chat about the early ambitions and passions of a photographer having grown up in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. How do you get out of your own way and make your best work? Artist Missy Gilbert AKA ØFFËRÎNGŠ says its by focusing on WHO the work is for. By dedicating it and setting intention for the work, it allows you to get out of your own way and channel your greatest level of focus to maximise your creative output. Missy is an artist, though she has only just started to call herself that - after 21 years working as a freelance creative. I wanted to talk to Missy about why it's so hard to claim that title - especially given she is one of the most successful creatives I know working across events (the immersive dining behemoth 'Hyper Real' in conjunction with Chin Chin Restaurant), Performance Art (QVB After Dark, Sydney) and she even runs a 2000 square meter artists space, The Nest Creative Space in Alexandria, Sydney! The Australian city of Melbourne has been voted the world’s most liveable city numerous times - but does that status make those of us who live here complacent about the city’s long-term future? Professor Lars Coenen is the inaugural City of Melbourne Chair of Resilient Cities - an initiative between the City of Melbourne and University of Melbourne. The aim is to strengthen the city’s resilience in the face of sustainability challenges like global warming. But key to creating a sustainable city is innovation, done in a purposeful way that contributes to our societies, cities and our regions. And that, says Professor Coenen, is where Australia needs to raise its game. Episode recorded: November 29, 2018. Interviewer: Steve Grimwade. Producer and editor: Chris Hatzis.
