On this week's program, we hear from Bee and Rory about the targeting of Asian-migrant sex workers, increased raids committed by Australian Border Force through Operation Inglenook, and the ongoing violence and surveillance of street-based sex workers. First, we'll hear a conversation with Bee on 3CR's Tuesday Breakfast. Bee is a migrant sex worker, outreach peer support worker for women of cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds for Vixen and AMSWAG (Asian Migrant Sex Worker Advisory Group) under the Scarlet Alliance. CW: Stalking, harassment, sexual assault, animal death. We use the term “grandfathered” in this episode. We understand this term has very racist origins, and we apologise for the mistake. A better term would have been “legacy rates”While we are not more likely to be victims of violence because we sell sex, we are more likely to be victims of violence because people think the fact that we sell sex makes us less than human. From strange encounters on a sybian to considering buying a brothel, she shares how she became the independent sex worker we know and love. Our Misconception of the Week is that our clients are old, ugly, fat, creepy, and/or desperate, and Jenna deals with an old client who is upset that he doesn't hold the power over her he once had. We answer a whole bunch of your questions - how many regulars vs new clients, which is the busiest day of the week, more incalls or outcalls, and how much of our time we spend in bookings vs doing admin.CHAPTERS1:23 Main segment: Holly's origin story26:20 Misconception: Clients are old, ugly, fat, creepy, desperate31:02 Shit People Say: “You must have crossed over to the dark side”37:37 Question of the Week: StatsLINKSScarlet Alliance Emergency Relief Fund: https://chuffed.org/project/sex-worker-supportPatreon (from $3AUD/month): http://www.patreon.com/somebodyyoupodInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/somebodyyoupodTwitter: http://www.twitter.com/somebodyyoupodFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/somebodyyoupod Somebody You Love is sponsored by Assembly Four, empowering sex workers throughtechnology: https://assemblyfour.com/For more info on sex work in Australia, please check out the following organisations:Scarlet Alliance: https://www.scarletalliance.org.au/ ACT (SWOP ACT): https://meridianact.org.au/swop/NSW (SWOP NSW): https://swop.org.au/NT (SWOP NT): https://www.ntahc.org.au/swopntQld (Respect Inc): https://respectqld.org.au/SA (SIN): http://www.sin.org.au/sindex.htmlTas (Scarlet Alliance): https://scarletalliance.org.au/links/Vic (Vixen Collective): https://www.vixencollective.org/vcWA (SWEAR): http://sexworkerrightswa.orgWA (Magenta): http://magenta.org.auSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/somebodyyoupod)

We are in a serious global pandemic health crisis. States around the world, including the Andrews state government have tackled the virus cop-heavy and with blanket responses minimising their own health failures and leaving many behind. We can imagine another approach, grounded in resourcing communities, health and harm reduction. We hear from four guests, who touch on some of the significant issues here in so called Victoria:Tiara on the distress and dangers of quarantine and isolation, and punitive barriers to support Hope on experiences of systemic failures as a frontline health worker and nursing studentPolly unpacking the assumptions of restrictions on people living solo, care and bosses forcing precarious workers to work in unsafe conditionsStarlady on the significant mental health impacts, problems with policing, and failures in the LGBTIQ services spaceAnd more. For our latest, Binge Thinking got hot and sexy with Feminist and Sex Worker Cara van Park*. Caspar and Cara binged on sex work in Australia, how she entered the industry, navigating consent, the intersection of her feminism and work, stereotypes and shaming, managing her privacy and the belief in individualism and commitment to community. Like all episodes, this is just one person’s story. Many others (particularly people of colour and trans/non-binary workers) may have different experiences of the Sex Industry. That said, this was a fascinating conversation. If these issues piqued your interest, you can check out RhED , Vixen Collective and Scarlet Alliance to learn more. Produced by Nina Roxburgh and featuring music from Big Gigantic. If you like the episode, please tell us! Rate us, review us, leave a comment or send us an email. We want to hear from you! Women, and their bodies, are for sale. You don’t have to go to Nigeria, where Boko Haram wants to sell kidnapped schoolgirls, to find women on the market. Throughout the world, women and children are trafficked and traded as workers in the multi-billion-dollar sex industry, and their bodies are bought by ‘consumers’ everywhere. In the West, ads for everything from clothing to cars feature scantily clad women to help turn a profit. Pornography, IVF, surrogacy and prostitution are very different things, but all put women and their bodies on the market. Women are bought, sold and exploited everywhere. In much of the world, equality for women is still a dream, but wherever women’s bodies are for sale, real equality is still a long way off.Lydia Cacho is an award-winning investigative journalist, writer and activist, and is the author of Slavery Inc.: The untold story of international sex trafficking.Kajsa Ekis Ekman is a Swedish journalist, writer and activist. She is the founder of Feminists Against Surrogacy and the author of Being and Being Bought: Prostitution, surrogacy and the split self.Alissa Nutting is an American author of the short story collection Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls and the novel Tampa.Elizabeth Pisani is a London-based journalist and epidemiologist and the author of Indonesia etc.Jules Kim is acting CEO of Scarlet Alliance, the Australian Sex Workers Association.
- Advocates for the Nordic Model for sex work argue that this approach does not target sex workers themselves, only their clients. - However, Jane Green and Cameron Cox dispute these claims and argue that it is decriminalisation that leads to the best outcomes for sex workers. - Jane Green is a sex worker who is on the Executive Committee of the Scarlet Alliance. - Cameron Cox is a sex worker who is involved in a sex worker outreach organisation. - They also discuss the rescue industry, transphobia, unions for sex workers, and sex work phobia/whorephobia. - Updates on Israel/Palestine. - Comments from our listeners on the story Church of England Votes to Allow Women to Become Bishops. - For more information on the episode and for links to all of the clips and stories from it, go to: http://progressivepodcastaustralia.com/2014/08/08/nordic/
