Every day seems to bring a new headline about artificial intelligence. Some are good, but many raise concerns about the impact of developments in the technology. This week the so-called "godfather of AI", Dr Geoffrey Hinton, quit Google as he outed his concerns about the "existential risk" posed by digital intelligence. Since ChatGPT's public release late last year there's been an explosion of its use, and a massive amount of investment by Big Tech in similar large language models. But it's also prompted calls for a half-year pause on further AI training amid worries about where humanity could be left as systems advance. So is the speed of AI developments concerning? And where are humans left in the AI race? Kathryn speaks with Dr Jonnie Penn, Assistant Teaching Professor of AI Ethics and Society at the University of Cambridge, Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University, and Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. He's also the author of the number 1 New York Times bestselling book 'What do you want to do before you die?'. And he's in New Zealand for the Future State event, being run by Spark Lab and Semi Permanent, which looks at the driving forces behind the next era of tech innovation.

Our core focus areas are water management, climate justice, and disaster readiness and response / mutual aid.We create resources, learning opportunities, and mutual aid networks to survive and thrive both today and in the future. On this episode, we talk about tattoos and piercings! We're obsessed. Margaret was saying she gets tattoos on areas of her body that she's uncomfortable with for example, her thighs. After the thigh tattoos, she became in love with her thighs. We're really not here for the judgement that tattoos make you less professional. How does a tattoo take away from the experience and education that you have learned and gained? In Portland we're constantly pushing the boundaries of what's accepted in the professional work place and we're loving it. We have many more tattoos we want to get. Margaret wants to be covered in flowers from her favorite tattoo artist who she met in a dive bar bathroom. @tattoos_by_kassandra is her instagram. Martha is interested in getting plenty more, but is having trouble finding an artist. We love tattoos, and we're here them if only our bank accounts were endless! This episode we chatted with Joyce N Ho, Associate Creative Director at BUCK in New York. If you had to describe what Joyce does, which is incredibly diverse, you’d probably settle on creative direction and motion design, but we’d suggest going and checking out her personal website, joycenho.com — just to see the range of stuff she’s been involved in. Many people in Australia will know her from her time at JosephMark and Breeder in Brisbane, where she started as a junior designer working her way up to creative lead before leaving for New York. Joyce’s position at Buck is pretty new when we recorded this interview, so we chat a little about how different it is from her freelancing gigs, of which she is best known for and has been doing in the States for nearly five years. We also have a chance to delve into some of her projects for Riot Games, Patriot Act and Semi Permanent. For this episode we decided to release a talk V did late in 2017 in front of a few thousand people at a design conference called Semi Permanent. This was one of the first public speaking gigs he had ever done, so it might sound a bit rusty. This talk is honest, raw, unpolished and authentic. He dabbles on his beginnings, a few tips about branding and marketing, and what it means to go against the grain and make something of yourself. We hope you get something from it. Enjoy

In this episode, the boys officially welcome Lionheart as a Semi-Permanent. Pouch discovers that Lionheart is a wealth of useless information. Milky is left out when Pouch and Lionheart bond over Flavor of Love. Pouch here. It's the first official episode of Dropping Loads where Lionheart joins us as a Semi-Permanent. With any new member, it takes time to learn how to operate and adapt, but once we discovered our mutual love for Flavor of Love and all things trashy VH1, it was smooth sailing. In this episode, Gad (aka Benjamin Sandal) prepares for his move to Texas. Lionheart brings the last edition of the "Wrestler or Not a Wrestler" game. Milky watches The Predator. Milky here. With this episode, the B-team ends. Gad is moving to Texas and most likely won't appear on the show for some time. Lionheart will become an official Semi-Permanent from now on. However, we announced on this episode that a possible second podcast might emerge from the ashes of the B-team. Lionheart and I will team up with ODG from the ODG Show for a brand new, yet untitled podcast. Zerothreetwo Conversations: Interviews with the Creative Class
Every time we've had an interview, I've always come out of the experience surprised. I always forget that every creative, even the ones I admire, experiences trials and tribulations. I mistakenly assume a fully formed creative outfit. More often than not, this is never the case. The journey of most is filled with ups and downs. My interview with Mark Deutsch of Happy Garaje is no different. I have always admired their work from afar. They are one of the few creative outfits that have managed to balance design work with personal art. If you aren't familiar with Happy Garaje, they are a design/illustration studio comprised of husband and wife team, Mark Deutsch and Johanna Velasco. It was founded in 2009 and also includes associate artist Karina Cuizon who joined in 2015. They've received numerous awards and distinctions, notably the Gold Award from The Society of Illustrators in Los Angeles, inclusion in the list of 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide for the years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 put together by the advertising index Luerzer’s Archive in Europe; and their work has been featured in notable publications such as Communication Arts, Semi-Permanent, Australia, BluPrint magazine, among others. In this interview, Mark Deutsch made my job easy. Usually I research and make a short outline with how I want the interview to go, but I was in for a surprise when I stepped into their studio. You'll understand when you listen to the episode. But in short, we talked about their journey as a design studio, from the beginning when they had the laptop of death, to when they almost closed their doors as a creative studio, to where they are today. We have another content-packed, practical and focused business-building episode this week that will truly help anyone starting their journey in the health and beauty industry, but especially anyone working in the Semi Permanent or Permanent Make Up (SPMU) side of the industry. Today we will be discussing about how to create an income-generating business in […]
In this episode, to celebrate episode 200, Pouch and Milky break their long-running format. Instead of presenting a Semi-Permanent for a laughter-filled hour, the co-hosts sit down and have an intimate conversation, interviewing one another with questions written by themselves and by friends. Pouch here. This episode really snuck up on us. Although we had preliminary plans to do something big to celebrate, we lost track of time and simply wasn't able to prepare for it. Instead, I mused about what we could do to make this episode different as we did every landmark episode. Then, I realized that different didn't have mean spectacular or loud, so because our podcast has always been fast and filled with riotous laughter, we thought about going the opposite direction. Instead, we decided on something far smaller, quieter, and far more intimate. We hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our lives and origins. Thank you to all of our Semi-Permanents, current and former, and all of our friends who have ever appeared to help us out on the podcast. We're nothing wihtout you guys. Topshop and other beauty purveyors sell “freckle pencils,” while Kickstarter-funded company Freck Yourself offers stencil-like adhesives that will leave your skin all sun-kissed and speckled. But hardcore freckle fetishists can go a step further: They can get these spots tattooed on their faces. Semipermanent freckle tattoos use pigment in lieu of ink, can last up to three years and cost about $250, according to the site NewBeauty. “I’d say for freckles, it’s clients who naturally will get some in the summertime with sun exposure, but want them yearlong,” Montreal-based tattoo artist Gabrielle Rainbow tells the beauty publication. Rainbow first experimented with faux freckles after seeing her best friend struggling with painting on a smattering of specks on her face each morning. “I really don’t recommend tattooing your own face,” Rainbow tells NewBeauty. “But once I saw that it worked out, and I liked the effect, I decided to do hers.” Richie Sammy and Julia Renegade Nation Always REMEMBER Marla Keppler Co Founder Renegade Talk Radio
Today I talk with Professor David A. In this episode, Gad returns and he's very impressed with Rogue One. Pouch reflects on 2016. Milky just wants the cops to pay for his car window if they break it. Pouch here. Who knew we'd end the year off with Gad? We tried to get another Semi-Permanent, but unfortunately, the one we had in mind was far too busy because of Christmas... so we had to bring in a ringer again. Thanks for 2016, guys. We'll see you in 2017. Intro/Outro: Michael Giacchino - Hope (from the original soundtrack of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). In this episode, we spoke with Murray Bell, Director of Semi-Permanent. Semi-Permanent is an event many of us are familiar with and we spoke a lot about the early days of the conference, to where the platform of SP is now and where it's going in the future. We found out that some people sat next to Banksy and Shepard Fairey at one of the earlier conferences without even knowing it. [mind = blown] We covered time Murray spent creating Movement Magazine, growing up deaf, leaving design is kinky, and some of the obviously amazing folks speaking at SP this year like Industrial Light and Magic (amazing), Ethan Eismann, Jon Lax and more. au.linkedin.com/in/murray-bell-60a43824 beta.semipermanent.com
In this episode, Random Guy Serge is back by popular demand and he declares he wants to go back to school. Pouch remembers when Milky asked him to check his genitals. The guys try to remember Prince. Pouch here. You guys have been asking about RGS and he's back. I think I boosted his ego well enough to bring him back, but he's unwilling to commit to being a Semi-Permanent, coming on an episode by episode basis. In this episode, Milky returns from his visit to the homeland only to be questioned about weed by SPJ and Pouch. SPJ reveals that he's been working on #PretzelMania, while Pouch is more interested in introducing SPJ's new character. Pouch here. And we're back to your regularly scheduled Semi-Permanent. It seems the absence really gave us a lot to talk about and we were having a ton of fun. Hope it reflects in the episode. Intro/outro: Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax. In this episode, Pouch welcomes back former Semi-Permanent, Random Guy Serge for a one-time return to the microphone. Pouch reminisces on RGS's time with DLP and wonders if he would ever use a blow-up sex doll. RGS defends himself against allegations of hating everything. Pouch here. Milky and Paco are out of town again. Rather than do another solo episode, I brought back good friend and former Semi-Permanent Random Guy Serge. Unfortunately, I didn't have use of Milky Way Studios, so there were definitely some technical difficulties in this episode. Normally, my perfectionism would have made me question whether or not I should release this episode, but I said, "Fuck it." In this episode, Milky and Pouch attempt to host the pod together with no Semi-Permanent. They found little success. Pouch complains about the sudden influx of Snape Haters, while Milky edits gay porn and makes gay jokes. Pouch here. As I bitterly declared, we had one of our Semi-Permanents cancel on us and we couldn't get anybody on in such short notice. I was set on doing a solo podcast, but Milky insisted that we try doing an episode with just him and me. The results are... Well, you be the judge. In July, D.C.'s first seasonal parklet popped up along K Street's busy commercial district. Transforming two parking spots into a playful, interactive micro-park, it invites pedestrians and office workers into a small oasis with fern and liatris. Called "parKIT," this new public space was designed by Gensler in collaboration with the Golden Triangle BID, as a toolkit for D.C.'s parklets. Wedge-shaped, multi-use modules of various heights can be scattered and rearranged by the public, and the scene at the parklet has been ever-changing since its opening. In this presentation, the parKIT team discussed the lessons learned from the design process, various reactions, and discoveries through the daily operation of the parklet. Also, they shared their observations on how temporary urban spaces can generate a new type of participation and placemaking in D.C.
In this episode, newly promoted Semi-Permanent, Ness returns to introduce his new Metal Ness segment focusing on news in the Metal world. The boys welcome Pornhub sensation Mia Khalif to talk about her early life, her career, and her favorite movies. Ness has only been on the podcast twice and he's already brought us our biggest guest yet! We've been in the planning stages of this interview for the past couple months, but we never really set a date, so it never really went beyond the planning stages... until two weeks ago when I got a text to get my shit in gear to record two days later. I thought I was prepared, but clearly I wasn't. I was a nervous wreck. Hopefully, it doesn't translate on the podcast. In this episode, the boys interview Kyle Hebert, voice actor of adult Gohan from the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z. SP Jon returns to channel Lil Wayne from Beef IV. The boys bust open the DLP mail bag. Pouch here. This was a huge episode for us. Well, for me at least. I've always wanted to be able to speak one on one with people whom I admire. As I said on the podcast, I've kinda always wanted to be Bombad Radio. Don't get me wrong, I love our format and would never change it for anything, but I do hope to have a guest on one day who can sit-in as a Semi-Permanent, but for now, I'm pretty satisfied. We managed to get voice over actor Kyle Hebert, known for the voice of adult Gohan and the Narrator from Funimation's dub of DBZ as well as the official voice of Ryu from Street Fighter. Andrew Johnstone started out dreaming to be an artist and accidentally became a designer. He's started Empty Magazine after a night drinking with a friend when they decided it would be a good idea to start a magazine. He found himself pitching an original idea for what has become an international design conference - called Semi Permanent - in Barcelona with co-founder Murray Bell. It's now in it's 11th year. They've had all sorts of amazing guests, who range from Pixar animator Andrew Gordon to Roman Coppola to this year's star catch Tony Hawk. Not bad for a boy from the 'Gong.
