EPISODE SNAPSHOT Welcome to The Bryan Air Podcast. Career intelligence for pilots. We break down executive moves, economic forces, and the technology reshaping how pilots are trained, assessed, and employed. Boardroom decisions land on your flight deck. We translate them first. No corporate spin. Just the intelligence pilots actually need. SAA just made a move that should put every South African pilot on alert. The airline has applied to have pilots, cabin crew, and key operational staff declared an essential service, and if it lands, your constitutional right to strike goes with it. Because the Labour Relations Act regulates the function and not the company, a ruling in SAA's favour would not stop at SAA. It would reach across the whole industry and bind every airline whose crews do the same job. We break down whether the bid actually has legs, why the legal threshold is narrower than SAA hopes, and what it really signals about the pressure building behind the scenes. In this episode of The Bryan Air Podcast, Bryan Roseveare and Ryan Parrock break down SAA's essential services bid and what it means for pilot strike rights, the launch of Riyadh Air, Qatar and Emirates strategy in a disrupted Middle East, a fake Air Canada captain, and the latest South African Airways aviation news. Paul goes to Namibia to check the cute WDH airport, and drive 3000km+ — and yes, before you all ask, driving the Skeleton Coast is everything you dream it to be (this country is stunning, and the NamibRand is perhaps the most beautiful place he has ever seen). He falls in love with Airlink (from their Embraer to their extensive safety talk, and they serve something called food, a forgotten art in Europe/North America), maybe with JNB a bit less (but that lounge there, woah!). Should you board when an aircraft is refueling? Maybe better than staying in front of it like Paul wanted (but the words of the catapion overrule him). Vinod does wide body bingo in Canada (there's one route always on time, listen to discover which!), and shares his South African Airways memories (the current one is a shadow of its former self). The last 777-300ER has left the factory, meanwhile the 777x is delayed, again (dire when compared to the speed of delivery of earlier designs), but it will be a success. SWISS is selling its famous on-board chocolates in stores, but be quick, it's only temporary (you can always dance the extra chocolate off at the Zurich Airport wave, which seems easier to access than the Narita raves we discussed in 149). Hacking the airplane wifi? Well, not really, but... And yes, like in every episode, we talk BA, and we mention FRA haha. We're on video if you listen to us to Spotify, or YouTube (this is nearly 3 hours, our record, so prepare to see our faces for that long!)Thank you to long time listener Garett Gaudet for his insights, here's his latest (excellent) MixCloudSee you in the next episode, happy flying! —For video, subscribe on Spotify or YouTube (or YouTube Music)Review, and rate us, on Apple PodcastsFollow us, and comment on: Instagram - Bluesky - Threads - Mastodon - Twitter/XComment, like, review, and rate us, on FacebookSearch for 'Layovers' on any podcast service (some direct links are on our website)If we're missing somewhere, or for any feedback, let Paul know on Instagram - Threads - Mastodon - Bluesky - Twitter/X
What separates good franchisors from great ones? This episode unpacks the lessons behind building, scaling, and selling franchise brands that thrive long term. Kevin Wilson has spent his career at the intersection of strategy and franchising, turning ideas into nationally recognized brands and scaling businesses others thought couldn't be scaled. From growing Mosquito Joe into a 350-unit system before selling to Neighborly, to acquiring and expanding British Swim School from 60 to 360+ locations, his track record of franchise growth speaks for itself. In this conversation, Kevin shares what it really takes to grow a franchise brand. He explains how strong unit economics forms the foundation for success, why data and analytics transformed support for franchisees, and how brand positioning and marketing can set a concept apart in crowded industries. He also shares the critical factors franchisors should consider when deciding when to scale, when to exit, and how to prepare for the next wave of shifts such as AI, technology, and rising customer expectations.Kevin is the Chairman and CEO of Buzz Franchise Brands, a multi-brand franchising company that includes Pool Scouts (pool cleaning), Home Clean Heroes (residential home cleaning), The British Swim School (swimming lessons), Wonderly Lights (holiday lighting), and the former owner of Mosquito Joe, a 350-unit system before selling to Neighborly in 2018. Prior to this, he co-founded Volaris, a low-cost airline and now the largest airline in Mexico, spent several years in Private Equity and oversaw $160M in capital, was an Executive with South African Airways, and prior to this was a Consultant with Bain and Company in the Dallas Office. Whether you're an emerging franchisor or leading a multi-brand system, this episode is packed with practical insights to help you scale smarter and build a franchise brand that lasts.Connect with Kevin WilsonBuzz Franchise Brands - https://buzzfranchisebrands.com/Email - k.wilson@buzzfranchisebrands.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinwilsonbfb/Episode Highlights:Kevin's journey from Bain and Company to bagels to Buzz Franchise BrandsLessons learned building and selling Mosquito JoeHow positioning and marketing transformed franchise growthHow data and real-time analytics transformed franchisee supportHow Kevin timed his Mosquito Joe exit by watching franchise valuationsAcquiring British Swim School and scaling it from 60 to 360+ locationsThe role of purpose and mission in franchise growthWhat franchisors must prepare for next: AI, technology, and rising customer expectationsConnect with Tracy Personal LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tracy-panase/ JBF LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/jbfsale JBF Franchise System - https://jbfsalefranchise.com/ Email: podcast@jbfsale.com Connect with Shannon Personal LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/shannonwilburn/ JBF LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/jbfsale Website - https://shineexecutivecoaching.com/ Email - shannon@shineexecutivecoaching.com

The General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa,GIWUSA has strongly condemned South African Airways for operating FlySafair routes during a pilots' strike. The union calls SAA's actions, described as an emergency agreement, a state-backed move to undermine the legitimate strike by over 200 FlySafair pilots, organized by Solidarity. GIWUSA accuses the ANC government of betraying workers by using public resources to support a private company, while neglecting essential services like healthcare and education. Elvis Presslin spoke to GIWUSA President, Mametlwe Sebei

Annabel has been flying Since 1999. She earned her Air Force Wings before learning to drive a car. Throughout her career, Annabel has been challenged to jump extra hurdles.President Nelson Mandela, knew not only her name, but also her parents names. Annabel has that effect on people. Her sparkling personality is warm, friendly and inviting, but don't her charm confuse you. She is diligent hard-working and capable. Annabel was a Training Captain at the VIP, 21 Squadron of the SA Air Force. She continues to assist at the Squadron on a part time basis. Annabel is also a Captain at South African Airways, after serving the national carrier for 16 years. We had a frank discussion about the struggles of being a woman in a male dominated environment. While Annabel trained in the same Air Force that I did, we experienced it in a very different way. Small infringements during her training were met with questions about her ability. She regularly came up against the pressure of being female throughout her time serving her country. What changed for Annabel, was she stopped listening to the naysayers and carried on regardless. Easier said than done. Annabel's candid story about needing to be ‘extra prepared', just to do the same job that men have been doing for many years, hits home. Perhaps this is a conversation that needs to reach the public discourse. My sister, Nicola, has faced similar pressures and roadblocks during her aviation career too. We discuss some of these ideas during this episode too. Above all, Annabel remains a great friend, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
