Annabel has been flying Since 1999. She earned her Air Force Wings before learning to drive a car. Throughout her career, Annabel has been challenged to jump extra hurdles.President Nelson Mandela, knew not only her name, but also her parents names. Annabel has that effect on people. Her sparkling personality is warm, friendly and inviting, but don't her charm confuse you. She is diligent hard-working and capable. Annabel was a Training Captain at the VIP, 21 Squadron of the SA Air Force. She continues to assist at the Squadron on a part time basis. Annabel is also a Captain at South African Airways, after serving the national carrier for 16 years. We had a frank discussion about the struggles of being a woman in a male dominated environment. While Annabel trained in the same Air Force that I did, we experienced it in a very different way. Small infringements during her training were met with questions about her ability. She regularly came up against the pressure of being female throughout her time serving her country. What changed for Annabel, was she stopped listening to the naysayers and carried on regardless. Easier said than done. Annabel's candid story about needing to be ‘extra prepared', just to do the same job that men have been doing for many years, hits home. Perhaps this is a conversation that needs to reach the public discourse. My sister, Nicola, has faced similar pressures and roadblocks during her aviation career too. We discuss some of these ideas during this episode too. Above all, Annabel remains a great friend, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. CNN editor-at-large Richard Quest is back in South Africa where he chaired sessions at the 2023 African Indaba in Durban and ended up befriending Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille. During a visit to Cape Town in February this year he told Alec Hogg that his big takeaway was the “unimaginable” power outages. In this interview with Linda van Tilburg the CNN anchor said that until Africa gets to grips with its air links issue, it will continue to “hobble with one hand behind its back, a patch on one eye and a shot in one foot. Quest also commented on South African Airways and on demands from some South Africans that the Cullinan diamonds that were prominent in King Charles III's sceptre and Queen Camilla's crown during the King's coronation should be given back. For many external observers, airline veteran Gidon Novick personified the best chance of a turnaround for teetering South African Airways and saving at least some of the billions injected by taxpayers. But the former CEO of Comair and co-founder of Lift this week announced his resignation as a director of the Takatso consortium which is negotiating to acquire 51% of SAA. Forthright as ever, Novick says his team brought airline expertise to the consortium and invested heavily over 18 months in compiling a project plan – but despite its 20% shareholding was “kept in the dark”. The aviation industry in India has emerged as one of the fastest growing sectors in the country over the past few years. Robust demand, policy support by the government and increase in investments are some of the key drivers facilitating the growth of aviation in India. Currently, India has the third-largest aviation industry in the world and the fifth largest market for aircraft passengers both domestically and internationally. And when it comes to the domination of aviation in India, IndiGo is the largest passenger airline with highest market share. The company primarily operates in India's domestic air travel market as a low-cost carrier with a focus on three pillars of offering low fares, being on-time and delivering hassle-free experience. In today's episode of Inside India, to discuss all things Indian Aviation, Ben Hayward is joined by William Boulter, the Chief Commercial Officer of IndiGo. I have a wonderful gentleman on the show, Colonel (Ret) Cobus Toerien, a man who has recently retired from South African Airways after an illustrious 44 years in aviation.Cobus qualified as a fighter pilot on Aermacchi MB326 and served on the front lines. He later qualified as a Mirage F1 pilot and continued to serve his country. With more than 160 operational sorties and 10 years of operational tours, Cobus was promoted to Officer Commanding, 2 Squadron. This was at a time where 13 fighter squadrons were combined into one single fast jet squadron, where Cobus led diligently for more than 5 years.Along the way, he qualified as an Accident Investigator and served in a safety role since the early 1980's. His final posting in the SA Air Force was in the Directorate of Combat systems. He transitioned as the Safety Manager at South African Airways and later joined the seniority list as a flying pilot once more. His work in Accident Prevention and Safety has earned him many accolades. He has an immense network of friends and colleagues all around the globe.
