Returning to various interests from my childhood, reading Stephen King's "Misery" at eight years old, the virtues of Rich Vreeland (a.k.a. Disasterpeace - the composer of our theme music), creativity as a tool to explore the taboo, the anachronism of individualism in art, the case for "Coriolanus" as Shakespeare's best B-side, looking for lighter fare in entertainment recently, the cognitive dissonance of @CartNarcs, and the cast of creative co-workers from one of my first jobs at Sam Goody (a defunct music retail store) in the mall. Music by Disasterpeace.
In this week’s music-themed episode, Gabby talks about composing music for death in video games with musicians Rich Vreeland, also known as Disasterpeace (FEZ, It Follows, Hyper Light Drifter), Robby Duguay (Fate Tectonics, We Are Doomed), and Jim Guthrie (Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery, Below). The music used in this episode is from the movie It Follows and the games Hyper Light Drifter, Fez, Fate Tectonics, and Sword and Sworcery, and was written and composed by Rich, Robby, and Jim, respectively.Correction: This episode incorrectly credits Robby Duguay as the “composer and sound designer of Fate Tectonics.” Robby Duguay is the composer. Jen Costa is the Sound Designer for Fate Tectonics.
Joe dies every sixty seconds to discover the secrets behind a cursed sword in Minit and Peter discovers the third dimension to unravel the cube-based mysteries of the world with Rich Vreeland's work in Fez.
My guest today is Rich Vreeland AKA Disasterpeace, the sound artist and composer for games including Fez, Reigns, Mini Metro, Hyper Light Drifter and the movie It Follows. As you can imagine there is a lot of music nerd chat, from esoteric composition techniques to how to define the Chiptune genre. In a broad and meandering chat we also hit on his evergreen love of Ice Hockey games, how he was exposed to Zelda in utero, how much he was inspired by Cave Story and his unlikely early musical steps creating entrance music for electronic wrestlers. The composer Disasterpeace came to prominence with his work on the 2012 videogame, Fez, as well as his score for the indie horror film, It Follows, released in 2015. That marked his first collaboration with director David Robert Mitchell, with whom the composer has teamed up again on Under the Silver Lake. For the film's score, Disasterrpeace, best known for his synth-driven work, delivers a full orchestral score for the first time. It's an impressive array of music which hearkens back to the scores of classic thrillers of the '40s and '50s, while also standing tall alongside music from R.E.M. and others. I spoke with Rich Vreeland ahead of Under the Silver Lake's release, and we talked about everything from video games to film to what he has coming up.

He has composed scores for video games such as: Puzzle Agent and Puzzle Agent 2, Fez, for film such as: It Follows and Under the Silver Lake and for television he has written music for Adventure Time and the soon to be released DIY.Disasterpeace wrote the original score for the massively popular video game, HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER which released on March 31, 2016 from developer Heart Machine. The game is a 2D Action RPG in the vein of the best 8-bit and 16-bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale. Hyper Light Drifter features intense action, other-worldly environments and a captivating storyline. Our Hero is haunted by an insatiable illness, traveling further into the lands of Buried Time, hoping to discover a way to quiet the vicious disease much like its creator, Alex Preston, who suffers of a heart disease, major source of inspiration for this game. It has been called "a surreal, indie Zelda" by Kotaku and "decadent, cryptic and classy" by PolygonIn this episode DISASTERPEACE takes us through his music for the game's brief intro cinematic. Composer Rich Vreeland (better known as Disasterpeace) is the composer behind the fantastically bold and unique score to the horror sensation, It Follows. We chat about how Rich got into music and how he stumbled into video game scoring, which in turn led him to film scoring. Rich shares the unique process for It Follows and how he worked with director David Robert Mitchell to achieve what the film needed. In this situation Rich worked closely with a temp track that he embraced with open arms, and it really helped him find the pulse of the film. He then was able to apply his own unique style to craft a score that is boldly of its own world. Rich explains that he was very unfamiliar with the horror genre and horror scores in general, so that made it easy not to fall into the genre formulas that plague most modern horror films. Rich also shares the origins of the name Disasterpeace. From the emotional intent of the music to the challenges he faced on the score, Rich goes through what made It Follows such an amazing experience. The film is getting some of the best critical acclaim of any horror film of recent years, and much of what makes the film work so well is the boldly original score from Disasterpeace.
