Show Notes Episode 490: Miami Vice Vice Baby This week Host Dave Bledsoe finds himself in hot water with his boss over his constant screw ups and is told to turn in his microphone and podcaster badge (Which is just some toy Jeremy got out of vending machine and told Dave it was “official”) On the show this week we head back to the 80's to talk about a television show that took America from 70's beige to 80's neon pastels, Miami Vice! Along the way we discovered that Dave really wanted to Fish from Barney Miller growing up. Then we dive right into a brief history of the Vice Squad in America. (Turns out it was mostly about policing people white people didn't like! Who Knew?) Then we meet the people who made Miami Vice, from the NBC executive who had a vision. (Literally: MTV Cops) to the actors, costume designers, music supervisors to the guy who faked the Ferrari! We see how the show changed American fashion and made the Miami Drug Wars a tourist attraction. (Fucking Americans, man!) Our Sponsor this week is the Miami Chamber of Commerce who wants to set the record straight. We open the USA Network announcing they are running Miami Vice and close with Marty Ray who is rollin' in his 5.0 Show Theme: Hypnostate Prelude to Common Sense The Show on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/whatthehellpodcast.bsky.social The Show on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatthehellpodcast/ The Show on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjxP5ywpZ-O7qu_MFkLXQUQ The Show on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whatthehellwereyouthinkingpod/ Our Discord Server: https://discord.gg/kHmmrjptrq Our Website: www.whatthehellpodcast.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Whatthehellpodcast The Show Line: 347 687 9601 Closing Music: https://youtu.be/YC3IxxYsIN8?si=upfE7XITDgKwiksf Buy Our Stuff: https://www.seltzerkings.com/shop Citations Needed: The Racialized History of Vice Policing https://www.repository.law.indiana.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4085&context=facpub#:~:text=Vice%20policing%20maintained%20the%20property,segregation%20and%20preserving%20white%20property. Send us a textIn this episode, we talk about the seemingly little known 1953 film Vice Squad. Despite big stars Edward G. It's happened. Elis and John have turned into crypto bros. This is now a crypto pod. It was only a matter of time…But worry not, it's only a fleeting transformation, and after some serious reflections the boys are back doing what they do best: discussing how to approach an all-you-can-eat buffet, wading further into the dried fruits vs sweets debate, and questioning the coolness of marshmallows.John reflects on yet another successful golfing trip, and Elis delivers his latest hot take on popcorn. From wiki: “The Uninvited is a 1944 American supernatural horror film that was directed by Lewis Allen and stars Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey, and Donald Crisp. The film is based on Dorothy Macardle's novel Uneasy Freehold (1941), which was published in the United States as The Uninvited (1942) and deals with a brother and sister who purchase a house in Cornwall, England, that is plagued by paranormal events. The film is part of a cycle of supernatural-themed films that began appearing in the mid-1940s. Dodie Smith began writing the film, and Frank Partos was brought in by his friend, associate producer Charles Brackett. Brackett wanted to have the film directed by Alfred Hitchcock but could not organize plans with him, so Allen directed it. Filming began on April 16, 1943; Allen found working with Gail Russell, who was inexperienced and began crying several times, to be the most difficult part of filming.”NEXT WEEK: Santa Sangre (1989) Follow them across the internet:Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

All episodes are made available to Patreon subscribers one week before their general release. We're joined by screenwriter Tom Vaughan to discuss a pair of cult classics by director Gary Sherman. We dig into the small-town murder-conspiracy thriller Dead and Buried as well as the ne plus ultra sleaze-thriller Vice Squad. The strengths and weaknesses of the films make for an interesting contrast that leads into a larger discussion about the practical intersections of screenwriting and on set filmmaking (with some talk about meddling producers thrown in for good measure.) The trio compares Dead and Buried's wonky & lumpy script (by Alien and Total Recall scribes Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett) to Vice Squad's drum-tight story to consider how screenwriting plays into (or interferes with) making two such memorable films. It's the Wings Hauser appreciation hour, folks, come get baptized in the neon slime. Robert Lindsy Milne is recognized across the continent as one of the most insightful Psychic Intuitive Counselors of his time. He has traveled the world giving insight with his Psychic Intuitive Sessions to tens of thousands of people.Robert Lindsy Milne - "For as long as I can remember I have sensed things. At first feelings and vibrations in my immediate surroundings. As I grew older I was able to perceive and sense real and identifiable energy and vibrations from the people I encountered.By the time I was 9 years old I discovered my life's calling. I didn't know what it would be called, but I knew what I was going to do.My father was a big Toronto Maple Leafs fan and like all red-blooded Canadian boys I wanted to be just like my dad. My dad wanted me to have the opportunity he missed. He wanted to play in the NHL.We often went to the Toronto Leafs games. One Thursday night in March of 1958, Toronto and Boston were in the Stanley Cup semi-finals. The series was tied at a game each and the score of the game was 1-1 at the end of the 3rd period. When the teams came on the ice for the first overtime period, I was immediately drawn to number 17 Gary Eiman… I knew he was going to score. It was so real to me, I jumped up and started cheering… In my mind the Leafs had won the game. The biggest problem was the game hadn't started! I was yelling and cheering. Unbeknownst to me, the building was silent but for my cheers. My father put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Settle down.” It was then I realized nobody, not even Garry Eiman knew he was going to score. It was at that moment in time, a light turned on…”Other People Think Differently Than Me”The referee dropped the puck. The first overtime period began. A few minutes later number 17 hopped over the boards on to the ice, the puck was passed to him and all of Maple Leaf Gardens erupted with cheers for their winning team… Garry Eiman had scored the winning overtime goal.I sat in awe and wonderment. My life had changed with the drop of a puck. 18,000 people were cheering, light bulbs flashing all around me…it was ( to the awareness of a 9 year old) welcoming me to my life's calling. As I entered my teen years I began sensing clearer images and ideas. I started to practice using my senses and abilities every day. My awareness became broader. From that time until this, I have continuously strived to be the best I can be. To grow and develop into the man I am proud to be.Expanding my psychic senses to the best they can be; to perform my talent, giving service to humankind is my life's calling.I've been a professional psychic for my entire work life. Performing psychic readings has been my purpose. There have been short periods where I have worked at other jobs, but never longer than a few months.I started doing readings as a career at “The Cozy Tea Room” in Toronto in the mid 1960s. At the time, the type of work, the way it was done, the standards of the environment where it was done, was hardly recognized as a job let alone a career.Regardless of the way it was done, the standards of our work, the old and faded environment we did it in or the level of respect we received, it provided the opportunity to do psychic readings for thousands of people from diverse backgrounds. Some days at “The Cozy” I would see up to 30 people.I knew the Cozy Tea Room was only the beginning of my career. I was bright enough to recognize the incredible learning opportunity the Cozy Tea Room gave me.I soaked it up like a sponge.I have the work ethic of a plough horse and an inherited Scottish tenacity also known as stubbornness. I practiced my craft and honed my raw psychic ability. I developed a discipline, focus and most importantly I had the chance to do 100s of psychic readings a month.I became known as the Hippy Reader. I was the youngest reader in the city, probably in the country and not yet 20 years old. People came from all around to have a reading from me. I was one of the Cozy Tea Rooms most popular readers (and one of biggest earners I might add)It wasn't all rainbows and roses at The Cozy. I was Mrs. Cox, the owner's problem child too. There were many, good readers at The Cozy Tea, but few got out of the tea rooms. The Cozy Tea Room's business was to sell “The Telling of Fortunes”. However, there was a Witchcraft Act in the Canadian Criminal Code, Section 326, and in its essence it states “Fortune Telling” for money is against the law!Mrs. Cox, by-passed the law by selling sandwiches, a couple of cookies, a pot of tea and the Fortune Telling was, as the sign on the wall said, “For Entertainment Only”.Thinking back on it now, I laugh. Imagine the Cozy Tea Room being busted by the Vice Squad, taking us all out in hand cuffs for reading tea leaves. I can, in my minds eye, see Mrs. Cox, Pearl the waitress, and all the psychic readers in handcuffs along with the little old ladies who dropped by to get their “fortunes told” being charged with “found in”. What would they have taken as evidence I wonder? The used tea leaves? When a customer placed their order for tea, they also picked their reader. Many a day, I came to work, and there was a line up of 10 or 12 people waiting to get a reading from the shoeless long haired “Hippy Reader” also known as Bob Milne."This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4858435/advertisement

Cannell, which lasted 2 seasons. While all this was happening Miami Vice was at the top of its game, with high ratings, Emmy wins, and a soundtrack album that was #1 on Billboard for 11 weeks. The Season 2 premiere, The Prodigal Son, was a 2 hour epic with 14 pop songs and a full roster of guest stars including Gene Simmons, Pam Grier and Penn Jillette. Crockett and Tubbs travel to Colombia and New York City in pursuit of a cocaine cartel and discover the hard way that powerful interests beyond their reach are determined to perpetuate the drug war forever. We also discuss how even a flawed episode of the series at its peak could still be appointment television with Season 2's French Twist, where the Vice Squad has to work with a French INTERPOL agent to catch a Montreal criminal in Miami who has stolen a drug shipment and is targeting witnesses. This one features one of Jan Hammer's most gorgeous scores for the series, and improbably a brief appearance by Leonard Cohen as the French crimelord Francois Zolan. All U.S. presidents are products of their time and place. So...what would happen if we plucked them out of that time and place and into 21st century America? How would their politics change? Would they even be electable? And most importantly...who would they pick as running mates? To answer that last question, we're going to look at 10 presidents and try and figure out their best running mates out of today's politicians. Joining me are The Postrider's Lars Emerson and Michael Lovito.

The Video Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary
Quentin & Roger join LAPD's Vice Squad with Peter Hyams' Busting! Starring Elliott Gould & Robert Blake, these two LA vice cops find themselves up against corrupt superiors when they try to bring a crime boss to justice. The duo discuss where Busting fits into Hyams' career, how the film walks the line, and how the action sequences predate 80s Hong Kong cinema. Next up, the bet is on in Little Darlings. Two fifteen year old girls from different walks of life compete to see who can lose their virginity first at summer camp. Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol star in an unexpectedly realistic portrayal of female youth in the 1980s. We'll explore what it means for a girl to become a woman, the anxieties of keeping up with your peers, and the beautiful Paramount Home Video box. Lastly, there's more to do than ski in the Swiss Alps, especially when it comes to the psychosexual romp Julia. Roger & Quentin dive headfirst into the tale of a sexually frustrated young man named Patrick whose problems come to a head on his Swiss vacation. Welcome back, horror fans. I'm sorry we were away so long. This episode was recorded the morning of July 4th but it's release was delayed due to some health issues on my part which prevented me from editing it until now. I will go into that more on the next episode. We also need to welcome several new patrons that joined right after the show was recorded. That will be addressed on the W episode as well. But in this episode...V is for... Vice Squad and The Void. Then in Bumps in the Night we run down a list of our favorite possession films. Then we top it off with still more C movies in Attack of the Colossal Collection. Please enjoy!
Where you know him from: Vice Squad (1982), Deadly Force (1983), and The Wind (1986)This month on Interviews After Dark we talk to the man, the myth, the legend... Stoney Cooper himself, Wings Hauser! This interview was a long time coming, as listeners of our podcast know, and it was everything we could have hoped for! Wings was very open and honest about his history in Hollywood, and even cleared up a few false rumors. He even gives a disturbing inside look into his personal inspiration for Ramrod's (Vice Squad) backstory. Wings does NOT hold back!Unfortunately, the audio quality isn't as good as we would have hoped for. We had to record the episode in a conference room that wasn't made for audio recording lol! We don't think it diminishes the conversation by any means, though, and we look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts in the comments below.Watch Eve N' God: This Female is Not Yet Rated (TM) on YouTube— SUPPORT PODCASTING AFTER DARK —PATREON - Two extra shows a month, including our celebrity interview series, plus videos and other exclusive content!MERCH STORE - We have a fully dedicated merch store at TeePublic with multiple designs and products!INSTAGRAM / FACEBOOK / LETTERBOXD - Follow us on social media for updates and announcements!Purchase 7 WINTERS ALONE on Amazon: HARDCOVER / PAPERBACK / KINDLEThis podcast is part of the BFOP Network
D.B. Ballantyne, one of the first members of the local Vice Squad, pick-axe murder investigator, shot at by a popular local baseball player, and the primary officer in the greatest and most involved police chase I have ever heard of. Take a trip back into the 30's, 40's, and 50's of Junction City with David Burton Ballantyne, Sergeant of Detectives who supervised CE Noble and CK Keeter (Episodes 2&3) and later retired as Captain. The steady hand that guided many an Officer through the tumultuous times of our old historical friend Mayor Harman W. Peery, political turmoil, and the rapid expansion of Ogden at this time. NOTE: This is announced at the end of this episode, but we will be changing the format a little bit moving forward. In endeavoring to bring you the best and most comprehensive content we are moving from dropping new episodes every Thursday, to new episodes as soon as we feel they are complete. We will remain consistent and constant, however we are making this change so that we can ensure you get the full story without editing anything out. This episode also has a PSA over use of the language mentioned in articles quoted. Bottom line is that after episode 1 I started editing out what would today be considered offensive and racial terms. In retrospect, this was a well-intentioned but wrong decision on my part due to my own discomfort as it takes out certain contents and components that, while offensive, show the tone of the times. I will no longer be doing that and want it noted that any offensive terminology is the vernacular of the source I'm quoting and while I personally disagree, if we do not learn from history we will repeat it.
Seemingly every politician has dalliances they (try to) keep in the dark, but Warren G. Harding took his affairs to another level—writing wildly steamy letters, meeting in coat closets, even once getting caught by New York City's Vice Squad in a hotel room with a young fangirl. And while he was busy getting busy, his administration was running a full-blown criminal empire… That is, until the president mysteriously dropped dead.
