From subliminal messages in the media, to mythical murderers, to secret underground bunkers or to cults of the ultra-rich, this episode explores all of the surreal enigmas of Under The Silver Lake. Shrouded by all of the mystery and excitement of Under The Silver Lake, however, lies something deeper. Beneath the surface, the film poses a profound statement as to the human condition, the search for meaning and the turmoil of consciousness, all of which will be revealed in this podcast, which be listened to below:

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are a duo who don't wait for permission and refuse to let small budgets reign in their storytelling ambitions. Since announcing themselves as a fierce new force in independent filmmaking a decade ago with the meta-horror Resolution, the pair have released a further four films, each one a staggeringly original triumph of imagination over budgetary restraints. Spring was a low-cost Lovecraftian tale set on a gorgeous stretch of Italian coast that corkscrewed between romance and brutal body-horror. The Endless was a time-loop sci-fi head-scratcher involving a UFO cult that proved similarly spell-binding made on a similar shoestring. By 2019's Synchronic, about a designer drug that allows users to step through time, they had A-list actors like Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan queuing up to work with them, and superhero studios keen to collaborate (they've since helmed episodes of Marvel's Moon Knight and Loki). Together, they're storytellers capable of building epic worlds without requiring epic resources. While Benson and Moorhead have enjoyed their recent excursions into the MCU, unsettling paranormal puzzles made on a dime are where they say their hearts truly lie. Which is why, when the pandemic struck and the world was thrown into lockdown, they began planning a supernatural mystery they could shoot in Benson's apartment, star in themselves (the duo often act in their own movies) and craft almost entirely themselves. Something In The Dirt – their most compelling film to date – tells the tale of neighbours John and Levi, drawn into an unlikely friendship by unexplainable phenomenons in their apartment block. They decide to document this activity in search of fame and fortune – but can each party trust the other, as revelations about their secretive lives follow them down a rabbit hole into the unknown? We met with Benson and Moorhead in person last summer, before Something In The Dirt's release, while they were filming Loki season two. They told us about their writing habits and helped us decode one of the most jigsaw-like cult dramas in decades – a must-watch for fans of David Robert Mitchell's Under The Silver Lake and films like it. This is a spoiler conversation so be sure to catch the film before tuning in – it's available on Hulu for our listeners in America, and video on demand if you're tuning in from the UK.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Happy New Year! Our last recording of 2022 is the first posted episode of 2023! We look at two weird little movies from directors we are very fond of. We start off with Rian Johnson's "Brick" from 2005. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendan, a high-schooler who is wrapped up in a very tangled and tragic mystery. Presented like a classic noir detective story, with sharp dialogue and double-crosses, it is a very strange amalgam but we all enjoyed it a lot. We follow that up with "Under the Silver Lake" from 2018. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Andrew Garfield, it is a bizarre study of a man's dissolution in a dreamy, surreal version of modern-day Los Angeles. It is full of conspiracies, mysteries, and coincidences and seemingly demands a second viewing to catch all of the details. Not a perfect movie, but well worth your time to check out. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
You may know Grace Van Patten from “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Under The Silver Lake,” or “Tramps.” I first took note of her in "The Meyerowitz Stories,” where her youth belied a seemingly effortless command of her character among the likes of Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Dustin Hoffman. In her latest, the hit Hulu series “Tell Me Lies,” she stars as Lucy Albright, and now she commands the screen with the same effortlessness, mixed with a complexity and nuance that is compelling viewers who are begging for a second season. On this episode, she breaks down one important scene from both “Meyerowitz" and “Lies," and we get an idea of her unique approach to the craft, which is fueled by sizing up the world surrounding her character, connecting with her partner in the scene, and staying in the moment. Plus she talks about how her 11 year old sister June inspires her inner actor, and much more! Follow Back To One on Instagram Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. No small talk, no celebrity stories, no inane banter—just the work.

This week Darren and Patrick dive into 2018's Under the Silver Lake starring Andrew Garfield as L.A.'s resident code-breaker and scumbag. A neo-noir that pays homage to Hollywood that may or may not have something profound to say – for better or worse. Other topics include the new George Carlin doc, Sarah Squirm and body-horror comedy, and Darren sings the hits of the nineties.

Christian and Cole talk about "Under The Silver Lake" starring Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, Silence, The Social Network) and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows). This movie is a love song to Hitchcock and old Hollywood, as well as nutty conspiracy theories. The guys sit back and chat about this odd, but very enjoyable film.

“The Girlfriend Experience” put Riley Keough on the radar, and she's been giving us multi-layered, deeply-rooted, captivating performances ever since, mostly in indie films like “American Honey,” “Under The Silver Lake,” “The House That Jack Built,” and now this year's “Zola,” where she brilliantly walks the line of authentic nuance and absurdity in the role of Stefani. In this episode, she talks about the touchy endeavor of building the right approach for that character with director Janicza Bravo, the importance of knowing when to tighten up on prep or leave it loose, why she hates auditioning, how her spirituality enriches the work, why she's not willing to risk her mental health for the job, and much more! Career Retrospective with Andrew Garfield. Moderated by Stacey Wilson Hunt, New York Magazine. Andrew Garfield is an AcademyAward®-nominated actor who captivates global audiences with his transformative performances spanning feature films and notable theatre productions. He continues to evolve his body of work in powerful roles and compelling narratives. In 2016, Garfield appeared on the big screen in Mel Gibson's Academy Award®-nominated World War II epic, HACKSAW RIDGE. Based on a true story, Garfield plays U.S. Army medic Desmond T. Doss, who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Truman for single-handedly saving the lives of over 75 of his comrades while simultaneously under constant enemy fire during the brutal Battle of Okinawa. The film, which co-starred Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, Brenda Griffiths and Teresa Palmer, was released by Lionsgate on November 4th, 2016. Garfield's critically acclaimed performance earned him lead actor nominations at the Academy Awards®, Golden Globe Awards®, Screen Actors Guild Awards and BAFTA Awards. Garfield also starred in Martin Scorsese's adaptation of the literary classic SILENCE, distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film tells a story of young 17th-century Jesuit missionaries who were persecuted during their search for a priest who had forsaken his faith. The film also starred Liam Neeson and Adam Driver. He was recently on stage once again in the National Theatre's production of ANGELS IN AMERICA directed by Tony Award®-winning Marianne Elliott. He plays “Prior Walter,” alongside Denise Gough, Nathan Lane, James McArdle and Russell Tovey. Garfield currently stars in Andy Serkis' drama BREATHE, based on the true story of the handsome, brilliant and adventurous Robin Cavendish (Garfield). Said to only have three months to live after being diagnosed with polio at the age of 28, Robin became a medical miracle and a champion for the disabled as he defied the odds stacked against him and lived until the age of 64. Later this year, Garfield will star in the modern noir crime thriller UNDER THE SILVER LAKE. Set in the underbelly of Silver Lake, California, the film follows an eccentric man who becomes obsessed with the disappearance of his neighbor and the murder of another man. Part 1 of JAMIE'S HISTORY OF AMERICAN WINE Which is more alienating: this bitter wine Jamie picked or the cynical movie Scott paired to it? In episode eighty-two of movies imo., Ben, Brandon, and Daniel yell over each other about David Robert Mitchell's long-delayed L.A. neo-noir picture UNDER THE SILVER LAKE. They also discuss three (assumedly) major influences David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DR., Robert Altman's THE LONG GOODBYE, and John Carpenter's THEY LIVE. Ben draws a personal comparison to Naomi Watts letting loose, Daniel quibbles with the price of tea, and Brandon cements his status as the ultimate UNDER THE SILVER LAKE apologist with a deep dive theory on dreams.
