Star Trek: Discovery – Season 3 Episode 1 – That Hope Is You, Part 1 We’re back! Brian and Ruthie talk through the season 3 premiere episode of Star Trek: Discovery, titled That Hope Is You, Part 1. This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! If you haven’t seen the season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you! Welcome… to the future!!! Burnham has arrived in the 32nd Century, and things are much different than the 23rd. The Federation is no more. She’s not on Terralysium, as expected, but Hima. We hear of “The Burn” that has changed everything. We meet Book, his cat Grudge, see some incredible technology, unusual alliances, and witness a lot of brutalities. Funny lines Sonequa Martin-Green had a chance to show a comedic side she hasn’t had much chance to show. At Requiem, once pumped full of happy juice, she is VERY funny! She does a great job in this episode all the way around. We see laughter, joy, sorrow, and just about every emotion she can play. David Ajala was also great and they have great chemistry. But there is hope… One of the best things from this episode is when they meet Aditya Sahil, the de facto Starfleet representative in this sector. It was so inspiring to see him finally find the person his decades of hope were all about. Burnham is that hope. Spot the References… Again, there were a lot of references this week, though not as many as Lower Decks had. I used this Den of Geek article to help find them. Welcome to the Voyeur Season! This season is all about real talk and unedited, adult conversations with friends and teachers about yogic concepts and life.In this episode (S3E1), Tamika discusses how yoga teachers and studio staff felt while working in the typical studio environment with fellow teacher Shahrzad Kahkeshani and yogi & horticultural therapist in training, Kelly Lawless. Now that Covid has forced all to be who they really are without their normal coping mechanisms, some things revealed weren't really what we expected. Amongst Shahrzad's sniffles (allergies--not Covid) and the farm noises in the background, they discuss yoga as a consumed product in the West, consumerism in general, and the student-teacher relationship with a few other rants. (While this is framed within the context of yoga, having spent more than a decade as a public school teacher, the same applies!)

In this podcast, Josiah picks up where he left off in Part 1, sharing stories from his time with Molotov Mouths, the touring poetry collective from the 1990s. He pivots to talking about the gentrification he saw happening first-hand in the Mission in the late-'90s/early-2000s. Josiah has been working at City Lights Books in North Beach for the last several years, and he talks about his job at this iconic San Francisco business (which is open during the pandemic). He ends this podcast with a hella powerful poem about gentrification in the Mission. Please visit our website to read the words to "Galeria de la Raza Blues." Talking Through Eye of the Beholder & The New Frontier Fear the Walking Dead is back with Season 3, and we’re back, too! And we want to welcome new co-host Kyle to the podcast! We hope you’ll all give him a warm welcome!!! Okay, so it’s me, Kyle, writing this… LOL. But I know you will all be nice to me. Ruthie will be back for The Walking Dead.  This season is off to a rockin’ (no pun intended) start and ‘WOW’ was that a heart-wrenching surprise at the start of Episode two. Brian and Kyle, take your Awesome Sauce feedback, mix it in with a few crumbles of Travis’s freshly crumbled cinder-blocks, and stir it with a little Madison’s eyeball laden spoon and out comes a Willy ‘rat fink’ toady souffle for you all to feast on and enjoy. Send in your feedback! Remember to leave us your feedback for next week’s episode, Fear the Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 3, titled TEOTWAWKI. S3E1 Eye of the Beholder got a 1.18 in the 18-49 demographic, with 3.109 million viewers. S3E2 The New Frontier got a 1.04 in the 18-49 with 2.698 million viewers. Compare that to last season’s premiere, this is way down from 3.08 and 6.674 million viewers. Comparing to the last two episodes that covered the last season finale, it’s down from 1.59 and 3.671 million viewers for S2E14 and 1.26 and 3.048 million viewers for S2E15. Other Fun Stuff Completely Unrelated to Eye of the Beholder & The New Frontier Brian’s been asking for some help. Brian’s laptop had been having some hard drive issues while he and Ruthie recorded The Walking Dead 7B, so he started a GoFundMe campaign to help him out to buy a new solid-state drive (SSD), asking listeners if they could help him out a bit and donate to help pay for it. Well, over the hiatus, he found a deal on an SSD and put it on his credit card. So, he now has the drive, but he could still use help since he’s still paying for it. In the first episode of the season, our Canadian friend, Jeff, asks us a convenient question that allows us to launch into The Origin of Talking Poofy and The Poofcast. It's not unlike the origin of Spider-Man but with less nuclear waste, no spiders, no super powers -- okay, the only similarity is that web goo he shoots out of his wrist. The Interrogaytion probes it's most internationally renowned guest, star of 80's sci-fi spectacle V (and the recent remake) the sublime Jane Badler, who reveals some juicy secrets from the set of legendary daytime soap, One Life to Live. (Scott and Adam went into complete nerdgasm during this interview). Jane Badler's delicious CD can be ordered from her website, JaneBadler.com. Check out one of her songs below. Scott tells us a story about someone who wasn't entirely honest with him on Grindr (I know, people lie on gay dating sites, it's a shock) and Prue Lapse tries to show us her Grindr profile, but we all manage to look away in time. Finally, a look behind the scenes of the Poofcast as we get a look at what home life is like for our major sponsor, the opinionated arsehole from The Grunt Report, Grunty McFarkring. WARNING The Poofcast contains coarse language, explicit discussions about homosexual acts, fawning over a bona fide science fiction diva, racial stereotypes rendered with sound effects and a Canadian.
