The Dark Three talk The Unknown - but more importantly, what they feel he represents; the bearer of a great deal of the show's weaknesses. They each discuss what they felt the show struggled with, ways in which they felt the themes could have been more reinforced, and whether or not The Unknown even needed to be invited to the party at all. “Where should we be if nobody tried to find out what lies beyond?“ It’s time to grab your torches and brush up on your parenting skills. This March on “Talking Technophobia in Film,” we begin our Third Season and year-long discussion of “Monsters & Made” in several iconic films. So rob some graves, lock yourself in a secluded lab, ignore your loved ones, and, most of all, be careful not to drop that brain! We turn our attention to the original 1931 horror classic, FRANKENSTEIN. We will touch upon the Eugenics, Scientific Ethics, and the responsibility of the creator to its creation. Some themes will include “It’s the Doctor, NOT the Monster, Right? WRONG!” “Modern Mythology,” and we’ll contemplate the final message of the film’s ending. The Third Season, The Third Wave, The Real Surge. As things get serious in Ireland with COVID, restrictions are at Level 5 and micro weddings are only permitted. Micro Weddings being 6 guests allowed at a wedding. Laura and Benny are back for the first time in 2021. A typical long winding intro with Benny dropping the bomb that the last audio podcast went live, Laura thought it was binned. Laura is in much better form but does a bit of dooms-day-ing imagining the worst case for weddings. Total stopping of weddings and then a guest cap for levels that should permit higher numbers of guests! Laura’s doom and gloom is reversed though as positive stories come to the fore. What to check for your micro wedding is dealt with? Clarity on what suppliers are permitted at level 5. Reassurance on the travel limits. The Garda are sound! They will not wreck your wedding! The big dance debate is put to bed by Benny, Benny grants his clearance for dancing being a null threat compared to spending 10 hours in 25 peoples’ company. The music should be permitted when 25 guest weddings are back. In practice the ban is ineffective, get campaigning! Postponements: the reason for postponing is discussed, be it international travel, tolerance thresholds, big party desires or the big drama show. Examples are given as to what people are doing in 2021. Benny says ride it until you are uncomfortable, make sure you get a happy ending. What is reasonable to expect from 2021 guest numbers wise is discussed, be it 25 guests, 50 guests, 100 guests. Realistically it is too hard to predict. March 2021 is at the moment the hardest to work out and people trying to work out the sweet spot for 2021 weddings. Locking in a date without checking with multiple suppliers is the biggest roadblock to 2021. Brexit still manages to get a mention. Christmas 2021 is discussed and the rules that may exist in December 2021. Benny reconfirms when no restrictions will apply to weddings. Hugging can recommence in 2022. When will wedding bands be back? When will 100 guests be permitted at Weddings? Laura and Benny Photography are wedding photographers in Cork, Ireland. Laura and Benny have shared their knowledge of weddings and the challenges of COVID in detail on articles on their website.

Classic Ghost Stories
Episode 3: Whistle and I'll Come to You by M R James

Classic Ghost Stories

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2019 44:27

M R James is known as the father of the English ghost story. He wasn’t the first to write ghost stories, but he was the finest of his generation whose work continues to be published and re-presented as TV shows and radio plays. He was born in 1862 at Goodnestone in Kent. His father was a clergyman and was rector of Livermere in Suffolk. East Anglia features as the setting of many of M R James’s stories.  James’s ‘proper job’ was as an academic and he had a distinguished academic career at King’s College in Cambridge where he became dead in 1889 and finally provost in 1905. He was awarded a doctorate in literature by Cambridge in 1895 and honorary doctorates by Trinity College Dublin and St. Andrews University in Scotland. He moved to become provost of the famous Eton College, supplier of many prime ministers of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in 1918. He was a trustee of the British Museum from 1925. In 1893, James began his tradition of reading ghost stories at Christmas by candlelight to a hushed circle of his colleagues and friends. His geographical background in East Anglia is evident in many of his stories, as well as his bicycling trips to Europe. Many of his heroes are fumbling academics and Latin and old manuscripts and church architecture also features strongly. He clearly had a knowledge of the occult and demonology, though he was not known to be a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as were other writers of ghost stories such as Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen.  Oh Whistle And I’ll Come To You, My Lad! Is the title of a poem by the Scottish poet Robbie Burns, and James borrowed this title though Burn’s story concerns a jilted lover.  Perhaps he borrowed it because the central item in the story is the ancient whistle found in the sand covered ruins of the old abbey, which when blown, seems to summon the spirit that haunts the narrator. The Latin inscription: Quis est qui venit? Means ‘Who is this who comes?’ The other inscription around the plus sign, or cross, is a puzzle of a Latin proverb: Fur Flabis Flebis which means, ‘Thief, if you blow; you will weep.” And in one sense, though a finder, our man is a thief, and when he blows, he certainly does weep. It is the sheer weirdness of the ghost that is unnerving, and James is the master of this disturbing oddness which is not quite the same as Lovecraft’s Cosmic Horror in his weird tales or later Robert Aickman’s unnerving unnaturalness in his ghost stories. The closest parallel I find to James’s inexplicable and disturbing weirdness is in David Lynch’s movies, particularly Inland Empire and the Third Season of Twin Peaks. Support Us! If any of that is distressing, please feel free to stop listening, you can always come back to it at a later time. Your favourite friendly intersectional feminist podcast is back for a Third Season, and what a topic to kick it off with. Just a heads up, we've changed our episode structure slightly; to get more in-depth on our guests' stories, we'll be covering a topic across three episodes with one guest in each. For this series of episodes we’re exploring reproductive health, and given the conversation that’s going on worldwide right now about abortions, it seems only right we start with that.To help us understand the history in the UK and where we’re at today with it, we’ve got activist Diane Munday on, a woman who was instrumental to legalising abortion in 1967 with the Abortion Act.If you want to help out in any way, please consider nowforni.uk where you can send an email to your MP urging them to act for abortion access in Northern Ireland, or if you’re in the position to donate, the Yellowhammer fund provides funding for anyone seeking care at one of Alabama’s three abortion clinics, as well as helping with lodgings and travel. This week we're doing something a little different on The Membership Guys Podcast! You may or may not know that we actually have another show called 'Behind The Membership', which is hosted by the one and only Callie Willows Behind The Membership features hype-free, no-fluff, frank conversations with real membership site owners just like you about the highs, lows and day to day realities of running a paid membership business. These are real people, real stories, real memberships. We're gearing up for our THIRD SEASON, which will be kicking off on June 13th; but to whet your appetite we've gone back into the archives from past seasons and picked out one of our favourites to share on The Membership Guys Podcast. This episode features Scott Devine from Scott's Bass Lessons Scott was actually a client of ours for many years, the very last client we stopped working with in fact. And we saw his site go from free YouTube videos and a PayPal donate button to a seven figure membership site in the 5 years that we worked with him. Scott's Bass Lessons has been running for 8 years now and has attracted over 50,000 members in that time. It's also gone from one-man bad to having a full faculty of world class bass educators. So there's a lot to pack into this episode!

Welcome back folks, to Here's What I Don't Get, America's favorite game show! I'm your host Chip Folksworth, and boy do we have a show for you. Tonight, we begin by welcoming back last week's contestant, who is on a five week run, it's Brian! Go ahead and wheel him out, Jim! Now, Brian can't quite see or hear anymore, so we've got a handy-dandy translator spelling into his palm. Thanks, Janice. Now, tonight, Brian has reached Level 9! And as we all know, Level 9 is the......RUSH ROUND! That's right, Brian is going to have to complete all eight previous challenges as fast as he can, all while avoiding The Decimator! So, Brian, are you ready to do the Destruction Derby, Home Run Challenge, Piranha Speed Swim, CIA Torture Rally, Ice Cream Marathon, Bomb Defusal, Nose Hair Pluck, and Napalm Slip N' Slide all over again?! No? Now Brian, remember, you've got the chance to win $2,500. No? Well, that's it folks! Back to Guantanamo he goes! Rich, tell the folks what he's won:* Risk Aversion* Fire Alarms* Patio Eating* Bad Trailer MusicDaredevils. Risk-takers. Everyone wants to be one, but nobody wants to be one, you dig? Humans are genetically programmed to want safety. To want routines. The second something interferes with that, you get a buzzing at the back of your skull that warns you. Don’t make that phone call, don’t meet that person, don’t dye your hair. Fear of the unknown paralyzes us into non-action, scared of consequences that will, in all likelihood, never come. Now that you are armed with this knowledge, go! Go out into the world and say YES to whatever it may be. But first maybe finish binging that Netflix show. And its Third Season. And the spin-off. Okay, maybe just stay indoors forever.FIRE! THERE’S A FIRE! Did you get up out of your chair and run to the nearest exit? No? Why not? Not exciting enough? Well, most fire alarms are just about as effective. Unless you’ve got the demon-in-a-box that Tim has. That’s what every building needs to switch to, a demon in a box. Literally. If a literal demon burst into your office smelling of brimstone, yelling at the top of its lungs, you’d HAUL ASS out the nearest door. What’s a patio good for? Nothing. We’re evolved beings. We literally invented ways of building shelter just to not have to eat in the rain. So you tell me you want to eat out on the patio? In the sun and heat? With bugs everywhere? Where cars just zoom by, sending CO2 directly down our throats? On uncomfortable metal chairs? Are you out of your mind? How about I have the chef come out and cook your food directly on the sidewalk? Is that outside enough for you? Enjoy your gravel omelette. The music in a trailer makes or breaks the experience. Sure you could watch a trailer muted and get 50% of the enjoyment, but the other 50% is brought by that music. So, when something you’re looking forward to really drops the ball on matching the music to the action, it can be a real bummer. Whether it’s mismatched energy, or another hackneyed, slow, depressing cover of an otherwise great pop song, you’re losing sales.Plus more on this salsa-filled episode! We’ve got this month’s movie commentary nominees, your voicemails, crazy news and more! As always, check out out PATREON and DISCORD for more phat lifted trucks.

Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we talk about “Twin Peaks,” which returned last night on Showtime. In our second segment, Peter Brown from Assignment X joins us to review “Alien: Covenant,” which was the #1 movie at the box office this weekend. And finally, we end the show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including Kevin Costner returning to westerns and the third season of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” Scratch those last two. We're talking about "Star Trek: Discovery"   Topic 1: Twin Peaks Unless you’ve been stuck in the Black Lodge for the past few years, you know that “Twin Peaks” returned Sunday night with two of the 18 all-new episodes on Showtime. If you are one of those weirdos who has never watched “Twin Peaks,” then I’m going to explain to you why “Twin Peaks” is kind of a big deal. Created by filmmaker David Lynch and Mark Frost, there was nothing like “Twin Peaks” on network television in 1990. Now the line between television and movies are blurred. Actually, there are no lines. Movie stars regularly make TV shows, and TV stars make movies; BUT, in 1990, a TV series created by a filmmaker as highly regarded as David Lynch was really unusual and special. The elevator pitch for Twin Peaks was Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, comes to a small Northwestern town to investigate the murder of the Laura Palmer, the seemingly perfect teenager, the homecoming queen dating the football team captain, etc. etc. But, of course, the show was much more than that. Twin Peaks was a mix of murder mystery, horror, dark comedy and drama. It could be absolutely heartbreaking and absolutely terrifying in the same episode. Creatively, Twin Peaks’s influence cannot overstated. It’s DNA is all over TV shows including genre shows such as “The X-Files” and “Lost” and more recently “Fargo” and “Riverdale,” as well as more mainstream TV such as “Northern Exposure.” “Twin Peaks” aired for two seasons for a total of 30 episodes. It lost its creative footing after the murder of Laura Palmer was solved midway through the second season, and the show struggled in the ratings and was canceled. Lynch wrote and directed the prequel “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” which I think is underappreciated, and a small taste of where Lynch would later serve up with “Lost Highway” and “Mulholland Drive.” So, that’s why everybody is so excited that Twin Peaks is back. We watched the first episode, and we’ve got good news that gum you like is going to come back in style. Smith, what did you think about the return of “Twin Peaks?”   Topic 2: Alien: Covenant with Peter Brown Over 30 years ago, Ridley Scott directed one of the best science fiction movies and one of the creepiest horror movies, and it was the same movie. That would be 1979’s Alien. Since then he’s made a career of lush, amazing looking movies which are a bit hit and miss on the storytelling side. That goes double for Prometheus, the 2012 movie marking Scott’s return to the franchise he began. But by then, and maybe until today, the Alien franchise has become one of the most beat up, battered, messed around franchises in Hollywood history. For every classic sequel, like James Cameron’s Aliens, there were two or three deformed creatures, like the possibly underrated David Fincher entry, Alien 3, or the no-holds bar trainwreck like Alien: Resurrection. When it came out, Prometheus had a lot of fans excited for a top shelf alien story, but the final movie left a divided fanbase, half liking it, half loathing it. Saturday Morning Trek: A Podcast About Star Trek in the 1970s

Interview with Dorothy Fontana. A television writer since the early 1960s, Dorothy "D.C." Fontana was the personal assistant to Gene Roddenberry. It was through this role that she became a prominent creative force behind Star Trek. Dorothy had a large part in developing the character of Spock and his family in her story "Journey to Babel," and is also responsible for many other classic episode of The Original Series. She continued her ties to Star Trek when she signed on to Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973, for which she became story editor and associate producer. And along the way, she deepened Spock's backstory in her script for the most famous TAS episode of all: "Yesteryear." In this episode of Saturday Morning Trek, none other than Dorothy herself drops by the Trek.fm wood-paneled den. We discuss the fan reaction to the announcement of an animated series, how a writers strike actually improved the quality of the scripts, and how she brought a strong female voice to other '70s shows like The Six Million Dollar Man and Land of Lost. But beyond being chock-full of crime-drama goodness, this season's second episode also introduces us to a new character and the show's first female police officer, WPC Shirley Trewlove. WPC Trewlove joins the "Endeavour" cast just as actor Dakota Blue Richards joins us here to talk about her character's "morbid fascination" with Oxford's dark side, and to tease her future on the Cowley team.

After being shot at the end of "Endeavour," Season 2, Inspector Fred Thursday is back on the beat with a hole in his lung and a lot on his plate. In this episode, we talk to Roger Allam about the third season premiere, playing Inspector Fred Thursday, and his other acting endeavors.

Warning: This episode contains spoilers for Episode One of the Third Season of Endeavour. Back in 1987, actor John Thaw brought the endearingly cantankerous Inspector Morse to life on screen for the first time. Now, nearly 30 years later, John Thaw's daughter helps to keep that legacy alive. This is the story of how Abigail Thaw came to play Dorothea Frazil in the Inspector Morse prequel, Endeavour, just in time for Endeavour's third season premiere.

State of the Federation. The United Federation of Planets is a great place to live, find a career, and raise a family. However, during the time of the NCC-1701-D and NCC-1701-E, there were major crises that affected the life of Federation citizens. Star Trek The Next Generation is a Starfleet-centered show, but the missions of the U.S.S. Enterprise impacted those working outside of Starfleet, from the events of "Conspiracy," to the strategic threat posed by the reemergence of the Romulan Empire ("The Neutral Zone"), to the fateful attacks on Earth by the Borg ("The Best of Both Worlds, Parts 1 and 2"/Star Trek: First Contact). Daniel, Darren, and Phillip explore what these impacts, what we wish we could have seen about the political and social life of Federation citizens, and inadvertently uncover the greatest Starfleet conspiracy since Lieutenant Commander Remmick's slug exploded. So get your favorite drink from the replicator, stop reading your copy of "Utopia," and join Earl Grey as they discuss life in the United Federation of Planets.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren Moser Production Manager Richard Marquez   Content Coordinator Will Nguyen ChaptersCitizens of the Federation (00:04:09) Vanilla State (2364-65, First Season) (0019:44) 2365, Second Season (00:29:24) 2366, Third Season (00:32:49) 2367, Fourth Season (00:41:02) 2368 Fifth Season (00:46:08) 2369 Sixth Season (00:47:39) 2370 Seventh Season (00:52:10) The Picard Conspiracy (00:53:20)   Closing Thoughts (1:00:30) Send us your feedback! Apparently, Garth of Izar has gone a few crystals short of a chandelier and decided to start chewing up the scenery, but don't worry -- SHATNER WILL NOT BE OUTDONE! Kirk fits ensue! Then - in DC Comics' Star Trek - it's ROMULANS VS A TEN-SPEED BICYCLE! No lie. Nimoy flips everyone off, somehow Dolly Parton shows up, and Scott and Chris do a number on Best Buy -- thus negating another potential advertising deal. YIKES!
