On this edition of Parallax Views, 2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of V: The Original Miniseries. A two-part sci-fi television event that brought in around 33 million homes, V was ostensibly the story of reptilian alien invading earth to steal it's resources and turn the human population into a food source. However, beneath the surface it acted as a parable about how fascism and authoritarianism can take hold in a country. In fact, it was inspired by Sinclair Lewis' classic novel It Can't Happen Here and was initially not about malevolent extraterrestrial invaders at all. In this conversation we discuss how V came to be, the conspiracy theorists who take the miniseries and it's reptilian invasion literally and Kenny's response to them, V as a parable about fascism, Kenny's work with Vincent Price on An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe, what Kenny thinks of being compared to The Twilight Zone's Rod Serling due to his interest in sci-fi that deals with social issues, the TV how Alien Nation, the cast of V (which included such names as Marc Singer of The Beastmaster franchise, Robert Englund of Freddy Krueger fame, Jane Badler, Andrew Prine, and many others), the Holocaust and how it tied into the story of V, racism and diversity and the way those topics figured into V, Kenny's sequel novel to V entitled V: The Second Generation, the possibility of a big screen movie remake of the miniseries, looking back on V in the era of Trump (and anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theories), V's dealing with the topic of anti-science sentiments and how they can be damaging to society, the way in which V is about two powerful women (the heroine Juliet and the villainous reptilian alien Diana), the cinematic quality of V and its European theatrical release, the studio's lack of faith in V and belief that it's dealing with social issues of the time would be too intellectual for American audiences, and much, much more!
Actress Jane Badler from the cult classic series, V, joined me in The Locher Room to tell us about lending her vocals to the new single, Tears of Faith from the Australian electronic pop band, Parralox, fronted by John von Ahlen. The song is a down-tempo electronic dance arrangement about broken relationships and the hope for reconciliation. Its accompanying visual is directed by Leanne Hanley.von Ahlen plays the role of a mad professor, intent on creating his perfect soul mate. Through the power of computers, A.I. and a little bit of magic, he manages to transmute a blank slate into the perfect female creation, played by Jane. The “Tears of Faith” video is about love, loneliness, and hubris; it touches on the superficial and the spiritual.Jane appeared regularly on American television from 1976-1989. Along with V, she starred in One Life to Live (Melinda Cramer) and Fantasy Island. She also played the seductive snatcher of Alec Baldwin's baby in The Doctors (Natalie Bell) and caused a stir opposite Kim Novak in Falcon's Crest. In 2010, Jane returned to V in the re-imagining of the series.Don't miss the chance catch up with Jane Badler!

One of the most inspiring, energetic creative people I've known, Jane Badler Hains, a beautiful talented New Yorker arrived in Melbourne in the 80s as an actor who is best known for her role as Diana in the cult NBC miniseries V.She's worked with many including actors Alec Baldwin and Val Kilmer and featured on talk shows from Johnny Carson to David Letterman.Arriving in Australia to play a major role in the reboot of the Mission: Impossible TV series, Jane stayed.Producer, singer, actor and mother she fell in love and married Aussie Stephen Hains, of the established racing Hains family, and as they say, the rest is history. Janes story is one of great passion and great pain. Always articulate, creative and open about the challenges of mental health and addiction, sadly Jane tragically lost her beautiful son Harry Hains, 27 through an accidental overdose in January this year. Jane is open about how she has coped, her grief, the loss and the addiction epidemic destroying so many young lives.CREDITS:Executive Producer & host: Deborah Blashki-Marks (mindfilmandpublishing.com.au) Podcast Audio Producer:Sophie Jackson (Soundstreet.com.au) Artwork:Sam Moses (www.samanthamoses.com)Original music:Jonah OrbachVoice Recording:Matia Marks Design:Rachel Mcarthy (rachelmccarthy@live.com.au
This original V cast member talked about returning to the new rebooted series from New York Comic Con.
The people of Earth are visited and befriended by a human-like race from outer space inhabiting massive spacecraft, 50 of them measuring three miles in diameter, hovering over cities throughout the world. These newcomers speak Earth's languages fluently, though they have distinct electronic-sounding voices and are so sensitive to light that they frequently wear sunglasses. They're called the Visitors by the people of Earth. They've come to our planet for resources that we can manufacture for their people to survive in exchange for their vast knowledge of technology and medicine. They become celebrities welcomed by humans worldwide. Manufacturing ramps up while the Visitors take over media outlets, shaping public opinion for their cause against the world's scientists and any others who might figure out how to stop their domination, registering them to track their whereabouts, and imposing their influence upon the world. Revealed within the tale is that the Visitors are a race of carnivorous reptilians donning elaborate human disguises to suck the Earth completely dry of its water and to harvest humans for food. Kenneth Johnson writes, directs, and produces. Marc Singer, Faye Grant, and Jane Badler star.
Jane Badler, Laura Vandervoort and Morena Baccarin spoke to us reporters at New York Comic Con about the new season of V. Joining them was also executive producer Steve Perlman.

Talking Poofy (Scott Brennan, Adam Richard, Toby Sullivan) present The Poofcast 46 (S3E1) guest-starring Jeff from Canadia and special guest star Jane Badler. Season 3 is here! In the first episode of the season, our Canadian friend, Jeff, asks us a convenient question that allows us to launch into The Origin of Talking Poofy and The Poofcast. It's not unlike the origin of Spider-Man but with less nuclear waste, no spiders, no super powers -- okay, the only similarity is that web goo he shoots out of his wrist. The Interrogaytion probes it's most internationally renowned guest, star of 80's sci-fi spectacle V (and the recent remake) the sublime Jane Badler, who reveals some juicy secrets from the set of legendary daytime soap, One Life to Live. (Scott and Adam went into complete nerdgasm during this interview). Jane Badler's delicious CD can be ordered from her website, JaneBadler.com. Check out one of her songs below. Scott tells us a story about someone who wasn't entirely honest with him on Grindr (I know, people lie on gay dating sites, it's a shock) and Prue Lapse tries to show us her Grindr profile, but we all manage to look away in time. Finally, a look behind the scenes of the Poofcast as we get a look at what home life is like for our major sponsor, the opinionated arsehole from The Grunt Report, Grunty McFarkring. WARNING The Poofcast contains coarse language, explicit discussions about homosexual acts, fawning over a bona fide science fiction diva, racial stereotypes rendered with sound effects and a Canadian. Another non-Metal interview not a part of BNM. Broaden your horizons. Expand your mind. Is Jane Badler a Metalhead? Has she been in a mosh pit? Has she ever spent the night in a graveyard? Inquiring Metalheads and Badlerheads want to know. For 27 minutes we discuss pageantry, snow days, college, Australian music, burlesque, cheesecake, tin-foil hats and steel-cage matches. Somehow we manage to work in Jane's album The Devil Has My Double as well as the next "dark, a bit gloomy...but more upbeat" opus. She may be well-known for her work in television (daytime & primetime soap operas, series, movies, 'V'), but her music is what you should conjure up when thinking of Jane Badler. That, and mosh pits. In graveyards at night. With cheesecake. Send your comments to: blacknightmeditations@msn.com
