Episode 101- Dale Crover! Crover is best known as the drummer for Melvins, and has also been the drummer for Men of Porn, Shrinebuilder, Crystal Fairy, and, for a brief time, Nirvana. He is the guitarist and vocalist for Altamont as well as the Dale Crover Band. He has also toured with Fantômas (filling in for Dave Lombardo), Off!, and Redd Kross. He has a new solo record out now and the Melvins have a new record coming out on Feb 26 titled “Working with God.” Dale has a great sense of humor and I laughed a lot in this episode. Een foutje kan het begin van het einde zijn, een slim antwoord een gamechanger.In deze aflevering van Betrouwbare Bronnen praat Jaap Jansen twee uur lang met Roderik van Grieken, directeur van het Nederlands Debat Instituut. Hij weet hoe je een debat kan winnen of verliezen en was – net als Jaap – vaak betrokken bij de voorbereiding. Het blijkt nog niet zo gemakkelijk een goede debatstelling te bedenken. Soms verloopt een debatonderdeel precies zoals je het in een rollenspel hebt geoefend, soms gaat het héél anders. Ze bespreken de do’s en don’ts voor elk debat met tientallen voorbeelden van Mark Rutte, Pim Fortuyn, Jan Peter Balkenende, Wouter Bos, Emile Roemer, Lilian Marijnissen, Thierry Baudet, Geert Wilders, Diederik Samsom en vele anderen.Roderik van Grieken: “Mark Rutte is een soort Unox-worst: je weet wat je krijgt. En dat is en kwaliteit, dat wordt door heel veel mensen gewaardeerd. Alleen: als je hem zoals wij iedere dag volgen, dan word je er en beetje tureluurs van. Zeker na tien jaar premierschap. Lijsttrekkers als Sigrid Kaag en Wopke Hoekstra praten veel over ‘nieuw leiderschap’. Dat kan werken. Churchill won de Tweede-Wereldoorlog, iedereen waardeerde hem. Maar in 1945 werd hij keihard weggestemd. Niet omdat ze een hekel aan hem hadden, maar het gevoel was: we hebben nu wat nieuws nodig. Als je dát weet te raken, kun je de kiezer voor je winnen. Je ziet vaak dat er een slimme boodschap bedacht is, maar die moet dan wel passen bij de boodschapper. Job Cohen had een heel goed imago. Maar de verkiezingen van 2010 gingen over de economie waar hij niet diep in zat. Het PvdA-campagneteam prepte hem eindeloos met economische feitjes. Dat werkte niet. Hij werd er onzeker van. Dries van Agt. Op 2 februari 2021 werd hij 90. De enige nog levende Nederlandse premier uit de 20e eeuw die in de heftige, turbulente jaren ‘70 een bepalende rol speelde. Jaap Jansen analyseert met PG Kroeger zijn politieke werk en zijn kleurrijke, verrassende persoonlijkheid.Dries van Agt was een politicus van de buitencategorie. De eerste aanvoerder van een nieuwe partij – het CDA – die hij al met zijn eerste campagne in 1977 winst bezorgde, waarna het CDA tot 1994 het Torentje bezette. Hij werd vaak weggezet als conservatieve zedenprediker, maar was in veel opzichten een vooruitstrevend hervormer van de rechtsstaat. Hij werd internationaal hoog gewaardeerd, wat hem na zijn Haagse jaren een in eigen land bijna niet opgemerkte topcarrière opleverde.PG Kroeger analyseert Van Agt in drie dimensies. Als minister in zes kabinetten gedurende elf jaar, waarvan hij er liefst drie zou leiden. En Van Agt als ‘paradijsvogel in de Haagse jungle’. Met zijn eigensoortige politieke poëzie, zijn relativering van het ‘Haagse gedoe’, zijn excentrieke vluchtgedrag en zijn pogingen om onder het premierschap uit te komen. De minst bekende dimensie is ‘Van Agt de wereldburger’. Want zijn internationale loopbaan was niet alleen van hoog niveau, maar ook de vrucht van enkele karaktertrekken die in eigen land nogal eens miskend of over het hoofd gezien werden.Hierbij laven Jansen en Kroeger zich aan enkele unieke bronnen. Zo is er diepte-interview van een uur door Jaap met de oud-premier, in mei 2008 uitgezonden op Het Gesprek, een tv-zender die maar een paar jaar bestaan heeft. Daarin bespraken zij zijn leven en werk aan de hand van de net verschenen biografie over hem. Zelden was Van Agt zo openhartig over zijn diepe drijfveren, zijn blik op samenleving en politiek en op zijn eigen leven en karakter.PG vertelt uit directe, persoonlijke waarneming van de premier en CDA-aanvoerder, zowel tijdens een zeer ingewikkelde kabinetsformatie als in later jaren, zoals tijdens het roemruchte CDA-congres in de Rijnhal in 2010.Zo komen allerlei onbekende aspecten en momenten aan de orde. Van Agt en zijn inspiratiebron Mao, zijn bewondering voor Piet de Jong, Leo Tindemans en Jan de Koning. Van Agt en de topfunctie die hem bijna in de schoot geworpen werd. In 1994 werd hij op een haar na wat Ruud Lubbers, Wim Kok en Jan Peter Balkenende ondanks verwoede pogingen nooit lukte: president van de Europese Commissie. Dertig jaar geleden implodeerde een supermacht. Niet door een gruwelijke burgeroorlog, een nucleair conflict of andere oorzaken die in de wereldgeschiedenis soms de ondergang van een groot rijk in gang zetten. De Sovjet-Unie hief zichzelf op. Het Kremlin streek letterlijk voor het laatst de rode vlag met gouden hamer en sikkel. Hoe kon dat? Wat gebeurde er in de aanloop naar deze implosie? Was deze onvermijdelijk, een bedrijfsongeval, een samenzwering?Na de reeks podcasts van Betrouwbare Bronnen over de Val van de Muur en de Wiedervereinigung van Duitsland volgt bijna als vanzelfsprekend een serie over hoe die gebeurtenissen in de rest van de communistische wereld van toen doorwerkte. Minstens zo dramatisch en vol van soms alweer vergeten, toen niet altijd waargenomen feiten en gebeurtenissen.Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger beginnen het verhaal in 1961, nu precies 60 jaar geleden. Niets wees erop dat de Sovjet-Unie nauwelijks nog één generatie zou voortbestaan. Integendeel. Dat jaar vierde zij haar grootste triomf. Heel de wereld volgde ademloos wat vanuit Moskou gepresteerd werd. De man die als eerste mens door het heelal om de aarde vloog was in een klap een held, een historische figuur; symbool van hoe dynamisch, innovatief en machtig het Kremlin-regime wel niet was. Joeri Gagarin was het bewijs dat ‘wij het kapitalistische Westen in tien jaar zullen begraven!’ zoals partijleider Nikita Chroesjtsjov stralend voorspelde.Maar 1961 gaf nog een signaal af. Burgers in vazalstaat Oost-Duitsland ontsnapten in zulke grote aantallen de rode heilstaat’, dat alleen een fysieke muur die exodus nog kon afstoppen. 13 augustus in Berlijn wees op nog heel iets anders. De reus stond op lemen voeten. Dat werd pijnlijk duidelijk toen Chroesjtsjov in de jaren daarna ten val kwam door zijn impulsieve aanpak en zijn opvolgers een neostalinisme introduceerden.Als wereldspeler en atoommacht was de Sovjet-Unie onder Leonid Brezjnew in die jaren tussen 1965 en 1985 op de toppen van invloed en kracht, maar interne verlamming en misgrepen ondermijnden die indruk toen al. De schaduw van de ‘Vozhd’, de baas Jozef Stalin bleef over het regime hangen, zelfs zijn megalomane plannen om de Sovjet-Unie fysiek, cultureel en sociaal te herrichten bleven leidend voor zijn opvolgers. Brezjnew werd daarbij onverwacht geholpen door de oliecrisis. Maar ook reusachtige stromen ‘oliedollars’ konden het Kremlin niet op andere gedachten en initiatieven brengen.Met de ‘détente’ en opening naar Europa door de ‘Ostpolitik’ kon de supermacht ook intern de greep op de eigen samenleving en de vazalstaten niet meer overeind houden. Met China groeide een veracht broederland juist in deze jaren uit tot een dynamische concurrent. Niet alleen de oude leiders in het Politburo verkalkten jaar op jaar, ook hun ideologische ambities, hun economisch beleid en hun geopolitieke strategie verloren het zicht op de realiteit. De dynamiek van de Gagarin-jaren en de petrodollars onder Breznjew konden niet langer verhullen dat de supermacht labiel en armoedig werd. As the Premier League almost ceremoniously take the time to react to another Chelsea manager losing their job, Arsenal creep slowly up the table. Arsenal struggled to find the back of the net earlier in the season but Arteta has improved the team’s creativity by harnessing the fearlessness and hunger of the Arsenal youth in place of the seasoned and more expensive players in the Arsenal squad. Southampton have generally performed exceptionally since Hasenhuttl took over and sit high in the table. Both have been in good form recently, but this was a test for both given the mid-week fixture congestion. It was fascinating to see how each team adapted the team to deal with these demands and the questions posed by their opponents.Enjoy! De heftige kritiek en zelfkritiek in de kindertoeslagaffaire leverden op 19 januari 2021 niet alleen een meeslepend en indrukwekkend Tweede-Kamerdebat op. Het parlement trok onder leiding van Pieter Omtzigt ook een hoogst opmerkelijke conclusie. De Kamer wil laten onderzoeken hoe het staat met de rechtsbescherming van burgers en hoe het zit met de praktijk van het stelsel van macht en tegenmacht. En dat onderzoek moet het parlement of de regering niet zelf verrichten, maar een zware en gezaghebbende commissie ‘van buiten’: de Venetië-commissie van de Raad van Europa, die eerder rechtsstaat en democratie in landen als Polen en Malta onder de loep nam. Omtzigts uithaal over ons land als ‘bananenmonarchie’ bleef dus niet bij verontwaardiging alleen. Er wordt ook heel concreet iets mee gedaan.Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger kijken naar de betekenis van dit Kamerdebat en naar enkele opmerkelijke historische feiten en ontwikkelingen erachter. Waar komt die term ‘bananenmonarchie’ vandaan? En wat was een ‘bananenrepubliek’?In deze aflevering legt Pieter Omtzigt uit wat de achtergrond is van zijn deze week aangenomen motie om de Venetië-commissie te vragen ons land van kritische reflectie en aanbevelingen te voorzien. De gedachte dat ‘vreemde ogen dwingen’ heeft de CDA’er ook zelf vanuit die Raad al meermalen kunnen toepassen. Zijn rapportages hadden soms ingrijpende gevolgen.“Rechter en Tweede Kamer kunnen alleen besluiten nemen als ze de juiste informatie hebben. Op dit punt is Nederland een bananenmonarchie", legt hij uit. "Hier functioneert de Staat niet goed. De commissie-Van Dam die onderzoek deed naar de Kinderopvangtoeslagaffaire concludeerde dat de rechtsstaat is geschonden. Dat lijkt mij een behoorlijk zware kwalificatie.”PG Kroeger vertelt over historie en achtergronden van deze zware club vol rechters en andere grondwetkenners.
