It would only go 35 mph and I needed more speed, I needed it to go faster. So I took the carburetor apart and drilled holes in air intake. I put a better muffler on it, and up-jetted it, meaning I allowed more fuel to pass into the carburetor, which created a bigger explosion which made my moped cook! I supercharged that boy, I dumped fuel into to help it go faster Today, I want to dump fuel into your spiritual life to help you go faster in your faith. How can you supercharge your faith and increase your potential? To become all you were created to be in Christ? As I reflected on my experience, I found that there were really 4 essential steps that I have taken and continue to take that have supercharged my faith and increased my potential as a follower of Jesus. We call them The 4G Steps to Following Jesus b These steps are not “one and done” - these are Kaizen - they are steps you engage in daily to constantly improve your relationship with Jesus The God Step weekly worship daily devotion Intentional rhythm to help you set your mind on things above James 4:8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. ILLUSTRATION: Imagine, you have a friend come to you for advice and they say, “I'm thinking of giving up on my marriage, I've tried everything and nothing is working, I want it to work out, but I can't see a way…” out of concern, you start asking them questions, “how long has this been going on?” “have you tried to get any help?” You really dig in and try to see what you can do to help them. Then you ask the question, “Well, how much time do you spend together?” and your friend says, “Oh, I don't spend any time with them… After we got married, I decided it would be better for me to stay at my own place. She wants to text and spend time together, but I just don't know that I have time for that." James says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” b Lots of people struggle in their relationship with God and that's because they don't treat it as a relationship - they treat it as a transaction. b “I didn't want to go to hell, so I did what I had to do to get out of that.” b The God step is about you intentionally choosing to do things that put you in relationship with Jesus. ILLUSTRATION: let me tell you how this personally looks for me. I get up in the mornings, go and work out. I will listen to podcasts about faith - not issues, but people who push me to go deeper with Jesus. I come home, I grab my bible and I spend about 30 min. I pray and ask God to speak to me as I read. I read from the NT, the OT, and a Proverb every day. I take my kids to school, on our way, we pray for their day - each of them prays and then I pray over them. We talk about what they are learning about God - sometimes we just talk about normal life stuff. It's not me trying to force God into a conversation - it's that God is part of normal life. I listen to worship music. I watch the things I put into my heart - when I watch tv - I use Vidangel a lot to cut out cussing, sex, nudity, etc. I try and stay present with Jesus during the day - if I'm working from a Starbucks, I ask Jesus what he wants to do in people's lives and I pray for them. At night, we used to gather and pray as a family. with bedtimes shifting, we don't do that as much. What about you? What does your rhythm to be intentional about including God in your day look like? I'll bet you have a rhythm for eating I'll bet you have a rhythm for working out or a rhythm for going to the bathroom, getting to work, shopping, paying bills, why wouldn't you create a rhythm for the God step? The Groups Step Actively engaging in Godly relationships Small groups Bible Studies Friendships that are faith-oriented The very first thing the first Christians did was to gather together and spend time in faith friendships. b Americans are more isolated than ever before. This is why as a church we have Connect Groups. Because we know that apart from your personal devotion to God, the most important determinant for your success as a follower of Jesus is the people you surround yourself with. Everyone needs to have a group of Christians they are connected to. The Growing Step Jesus loves you as you are, but loves you enough not to leave you that way Are you learning? Growing? Diving deeper? Read books, listen to podcasts, study the word of God The apostle Paul said this: Philippians 3:12-14 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. If Paul thought there was still more to learn, grow in, and deepen himself in, what makes you think you've come far enough? b The Going Step Looking for God opportunities (how will God use me today?) Using your time, talent, and treasure for the Kingdom and to bring glory to God ILLUSTRATION: We live in a world where NO ONE wants to do anything for ourselves. If I can outsource it, it will be better. I want to show up at the movies and not have to make my own popcorn, right? No one wants to have to do that. This is capitalism at its best. We have people who serve us and take care of us and we are willing to pay for it. Can I tell you a secret? The church (the people who make up the body of Christ) was never meant to be a “come and serve me” entity. b The church was ALWAYS designed to be a go-and-give entity. b We are not the movie theater, we are the rescue crew after the Titanic. b We are all hands on deck. All making a difference. All willing to “make the popcorn” Can I ask you a question? What is the body of Christ missing out on because you've been coming to be served rather than finding out how you can serve? b And… what are you missing out on by not serving, by not “going”? The going step is all about how you can make a difference! CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: A few years ago, I was at one of my son's basketball games and watching the different plays the coach was calling. Without thinking I said, “Huh, there's strategy to basketball… who knew…” Lol. I'm a dork. Because I'm not a sports guy, I'd never slowed down to look at how a team does well at basketball. Maybe today, you're looking at faith and going, “Huh, I never knew there was a strategy to being successful in your faith!” You don't have to wait another minute. the beautiful part of all this is that God is the most gracious of all and even though we thought we could have a transaction with Him - He STILL wants a relationship with you… Turn to Him today, it's not too late to start stepping into the 4g's

Should a Christian consume the same entertainment that everyone else does? How do we know what's appropriate and what's not? In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares truths and advice to help us make wise entertainment choices. Two Biblical truths to consider:1. Every story has a moral.Mark 7:20-23What is your TV teaching you? It's called "programming" for a reason. Sports & hobbies are fun...unless they rob you of your relationships and resources.1 Corinthians 6:12God didn't save you just so you could live a life of leisure. He's got a job for you to do! Ensure that your entertainment doesn't become your enslavement:1. Protect your time.Ephesians 5:15-16 "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise..."Distraction is destructive to your destiny. You don't need more time; you just need more time management.Life application #1: Don't binge watch shows or movies.Life application #2: plan your times of entertainment – not just a start time, but an end time.2. Protect your mind.Romans 12:2 "do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind"Renewing your mind is a lifestyle of practicing repentance – changing your mind so that you can change your actions.Life application #1: Turn off the TV when you're not actively watching something.Life application #2: Use filtering programs like Vidangel, and look up movie reviews online.  3. Protect your family.Proverbs 22:6 Some of you are binge watching Netflix when you need to binge watch your children.Life application #1: Shield kids from inappropriate entertainment.Life application #2: Teach your children why we don't expose our hearts to harmful things.We protect what's important, and we hide our valuables. Entertainment can be fine. Too much entertainment—or the wrong kind of entertainment—can be fatal. God wants you to enjoy yourself, but He doesn't want you to injure yourself. Protect your heart and use wisdom. Will you let the Holy Spirit guide your entertainment choices?

This episode originally aired July 29th, 2020. A few months ago, I heard about this show called The Chosen. It depicts the life of Jesus and the disciples in a unique way, taking a look at Jesus' life, and how the disciples became disciples. When I first heard about it, I was skeptical, but I gave it a try. After the second episode, I was hooked! Not only have I watched the entire season once, I've actually watched it though three times now. When I fell in love with the show, I started to do more research on it. Not only is it a unique show in and of itself, it's also the first series that is the #1 crowd-funded media project in history. It even has its own app! As I began to dive deeper, I learned more about the company producing the show,  Angel Studios, formerly VidAngel. The show is directed by Dallas Jenkins, the son of Jerry Jenkins, who wrote the Left Behind series. I wanted to know more about VidAngel and why this platform wanted to produce a show about Jesus in such a unique way. My guest this week is Neal Harmon. Neal is the CEO and cofounder of Angel Studios formerly VidAngel, a streaming service that allows parents to skip objectionable content in entertainment using groundbreaking technology. VidAngel has been highly profiled for The Chosen, and its other incredible family-based content like Dry Bar Comedy. VidAngel recently made headlines by offer all of its streaming content for free during the Covid-19 pandemic, provided that people agree to social distancing of course. My conversation with Neal was incredible and refreshing He was very transparent about the story of VidAngel as it experiences growing pains and lessons many young companies experience. You're going to love this conversation with Neal, so let's dive in! 4:30 - The Neal 101 Neal grew up in Idaho working on dairy farms and even tried to start his own cattle business at one point, but as he got older and learned more about the world, he started working with web businesses. After experiencing a spectacular failure right out of college, he started a company called OraBrush, a tongue cleaner that got rid of bad breath. OraBrush went from zero sales to global distribution in just a few years, thanks to YouTube marketing. Later a company reached out to Neal and his brother, cofounders of OraBrush, to help them market Poo~Pourri! The Poo~Pourri ad campaign was so successful that it turned Neal and his brother into an ad agency. Shortly after that, they started VidAngel, which is something Neal and his three brothers wanted to create for their own families. Neal's favorite movie is Cinderella Man. The movie portrays people having character, even in their darkest moments, but the movie has a coach who has a foul mouth. Neal wanted his young kids to be able to see the story, but didn't want them hearing or repeating those words in their home. VidAngel allows you to take popular movies and TV shows, and skip over content you don't find appropriate for your own home. It's like a pre-programmed remote. Neal and his brothers had a bigger vision for VidAngel, too. They wanted to have a bigger impact on media and on the world. They knew that if they found the people who valued protecting their families by using technology to skip over specific content, that they would also have a group of people they could also distribute content in a manner that would be a better fit than what Hollywood provides. 10:53 - A Broken Feedback Loop The creators in Hollywood love to see who wins the awards each year, but it seems they are essentially making movies for each other. About three fourths of the revenue in the box office comes from the family friendly movie, but half the titles coming out of Hollywood are rated R. VidAngel is bridging the gap to give creators a feedback loop. If audiences are skipping over certain scenes, creators can learn how to adjust the content that is affecting their market. It allows them to listen to their market, rather than their peers. When there is immediate feedback, there is acknowledgement of an issue and something productive can be done with that information. Since big studios own the distribution channels, they can also fill those with what they chose. VidAngel's feedback loop helps create a voice for those without access to big distribution channels. 14:10 – Resistance, Controversy, Transparency, Growth During the summer of 2016, VidAngel faced a lawsuit with The Walt Disney Company. It was a shock to VidAngel because before they started their service, they actually wrote The Walt Disney Company in good faith and transparency, telling them about the service, giving them information on the users they'd tested it with, and asked for their feedback. They shared their own reasoning for why they thought what they were doing was ok, but also gave The Walt Disney Company an opportunity to let them know if they thought anything being done was unlawful. VidAngel heard no response from The Walt Disney Company until a year later when families were already enjoying what Angel Studios was providing. VidAngel asked their customers if they'd be interested in investing in VidAngel to start growing the next phase of the company, and their customers said they'd put in over 60 million dollars to help it grow. Two weeks later, The Walt Disney Company sued VidAngel. It's been a long, difficult journey and a lot of time spent in depositions. After the lawsuit started, VidAngel reached out to their customers asking if they wanted to take it to the Supreme Court if they were willing to invest $5 million into the company. They invested $10 million in 5 days. Because of that, VidAngel has been able to improve their product and fight the legal battle. VidAngel doesn't know what will happen now in the midst of this process. They are trusting that they have been called to work to help families through their services and will continue moving forward in faith as they wait for the outcome and experience the process. 20:00 – The Chosen The Chosen is VidAngel's first scripted original series. It will be a multi-season series based on the gospels and the life of Jesus from the perspective of the disciples. The first season is out with 8 episodes. The Chosen is the highest grossing crowdfunded media project of all time. VidAngel's first original series is called Dry Bar Comedy, which has over a billion views per year. It's a stand-up comedy series (with clean humor). When Dry Bar started out performing all the other studios in the digital space, VidAngel learned that the data from people's skip choices can create a bigger market when the comedians improve their content based on the consumer feedback loop. VidAngel decided they wanted to do a real TV series next, and after a friend of Neal's introduced them to a short film by Dallas Jenkins, Neal's brother Jeffrey pitched an idea to do something similar on the life of Jesus. Neal wasn't interested at first, but after watching Dallas Jenkin's short film on the birth of Christ, everything changed. Neal knew then and there he wanted to get behind a project like this on VidAngel. VidAngel has a lot more exciting these coming. The Chosen has awakened in a lot of people the desire to change media. They want to hear stories from the bible that are well written with a high level of video production, imagery, and storytelling. They want to see the ability for both reverence, humanity, and light-heartedness in the portrayal of Jesus. It was important to Dallas to find someone to play Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) who was slightly unexpected, unique, and genuine, rather than a famous Hollywood actor. In The Chosen, you get much more insight into each individual's story and what their lives were like before Jesus and then their individual relationships with Jesus. The stories are plausible, relatable, and do not conflict with scripture. There is a biblical committee and those working on the show have educational backgrounds in biblical studies and have taken trips to Israel to study.
