In this episode of AML Conversations, John Byrne is joined by Sarah Beth Felix, author of Dirty Money Weekly, for an in-depth discussion on the biggest developments impacting financial crime compliance professionals. From recent OCC and FDIC consent orders to evolving executive orders shaping fintech and AML regulation, Sarah shares sharp, practical insights drawn from the front lines. The conversation highlights why “a clean audit is not a good audit,” the risks hidden in fintech-bank partnerships, and how even small institutions can fall into critical compliance gaps. Sarah also breaks down the real-world challenges posed by new policy directives—and why many may be harder to implement than they appear. The episode closes with a must-hear reminder for AML teams: focus on what truly matters—identifying and reporting suspicious activity that law enforcement can actually use. If you're not getting feedback on your SARs, it may be time to take a closer look at your program.

Learn about the vital work being done to protect our natural resources here in Louisville and Mayor Greenberg's proposal to gut it. Learn more at https://jeffcd.org and Find them on social media @jeffcoswcd Established in 1944, the Soil and Water Conservation District is a governmental agency that works to protect Jefferson County's natural resources. This is done through a variety of means; technical assistance, financial assistance, and education. If you are reading this newsletter, you have likely participated in one or more of our programs. Unfortunately, the budget proposed by Mayor Greenberg for the next fiscal year plans to cut the District's already tiny budget by over 54%. If Metro Council passes the budget without restoring funding to the Conservation District, its employees will be terminated, its programs will cease, and conservation work will be severely damaged in Jefferson County. The Conservation District's Board of Supervisors is asking for your help to act in defense of conservation by demanding full funding of the Conservation District. You can help by filling out the Metro Council Budget Comment Form (https://louisvilleky.gov/government/2026-2027-louisville-metro-budget-comment-form) and contacting your Metro Council Representative (https://apps.lojic.org/metrocouncildistricts/). What is most important is that you tell Metro Council IN YOUR OWN WORDS how you have benefited from Soil & Water Conservation District programming. Metro Council is accepting online public comments through Friday, June 5, at 5:00 p.m. Metro Council is expected to continue hearings through May and June, with a final budget vote currently expected on June 25. In 1890, the murders of Phoebe Hogg and her infant daughter in Hampstead became one of the most widely reported criminal cases of the Victorian period. The investigation quickly centred on Mary Pearcey, whilst the public eyed Phoebe's husband with suspicion. Evidence found at Mary's home, along with witness testimony, seemed to point to a simple investigation, but persistent rumours of an accomplice left lingering questions that persist until today.SOURCES Hopton, Sarah Beth (2017) Woman at the Devil's Door: The Incredible True Story of Mary Pearcey & The Hampstead Murders. Joined by my wife, Sarah Beth, and our daughter Sophie, we explore how Scooby-Doo became one of the most iconic gateway horror shows of all time. Before many of us discovered slashers, haunted houses, possession films, and darker supernatural stories, Scooby-Doo introduced us to ghosts, monsters, creepy mansions, foggy docks, abandoned amusement parks, secret passages, and masked villains. The show mixed comedy, mystery, suspense, and spooky atmosphere in a way that made fear feel fun instead of overwhelming. We discuss Mystery Inc., the classic Scooby-Doo formula, memorable monsters, the big reveal behind the mask, and whether Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! should be considered horror, horror-adjacent, or spooky mystery. This episode is a nostalgic look at how Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby helped generations of kids fall in love with scary stories. Topics include: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, Mystery Inc., gateway horror, classic cartoons, family horror, spooky mysteries, kid-friendly horror, horror TV, animated horror, and the legacy of Scooby-Doo.

In this episode of So, You Like Horror?, Sarah Beth and I break down the 1995 psychological horror-thriller Se7en, a film that redefined what horror can look like without ever relying on the supernatural. Directed by David Fincher, Se7en follows Detectives Somerset and Mills as they track a methodical serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the seven deadly sins. But this isn't just a murder mystery; it's a deep dive into morality, control, and the uncomfortable truths about human nature. We go act by act through the film, unpacking each sin: Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Pride, Envy, and Wrath, and how each crime reflects something darker beneath the surface. They also explore the film's oppressive atmosphere, its grounded realism, and why its ending remains one of the most haunting in film history. Is Se7en a horror film, or something even more disturbing because it feels real? Does John Doe have a point or is he simply chaos disguised as purpose? This episode challenges you to look beyond the crime and ask a deeper question: What does Se7en say about us?

Episode Notes I discovered this week's special guest a few months ago, at Henderson's Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriters Festival, and couldn't help falling in love with her sound!! She is Sarah Beth Brewer, the pride of Dawson Springs, KY, who has been wowing audiences for several years along with her guitar-playing brother Jacob Patton. Sarah Beth and Jacob have already been privileged to open for 90s country sensation Deana Carter at the Victory Theater in Evansville, and they've also played a pre-show party for Zach Top at the KFC Yum! We'll also hear of upcoming opportunities for you to see Sarah Beth and Jacob in person, and hear a couple of their marvelous masterpieces (one of which hasn't even been released at this point!). What makes a story -- and a world -- "cozy"? What are the conflicts, challenges, and obstacles like when, instead of taking the Ring to Mordor, you heroes are trying to keep a coffee shop afloat or open a pet shop? Sarah Beth Durst joins us to discuss not just what cozy fantasy is, but how its radical joy can be a powerful act of subversion when the real world tells us to be cynical or defeatist. We also explore how cozy fantasy expands what the fantasy genre gets to be when it refocuses the lens on different kinds of protagonists and places. Often, it centers and lifts up different kinds of protagonists, ordinary people rather than Chosen Ones. The world itself might be one where things are relatively calm -- or there could be a full-on Battle for the Powers of Good happening somewhere, just not in the story's imminent proximity. A smaller story can still be important, complex, and deeply satisfying. [Transcript for Episode 160] Our Guest: Sarah Beth Durst is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty-five books for adults, teens, and kids, including cozy fantasy The Spellshop. She's been awarded the American Library Association's Alex Award, the Libby Book Award for Best Fantasy, and the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award. In this episode we're talking to Sara-Beth Reuter about her inspiring journey to home birth.  Sara-Beth is a great example of courage and determination. After her doctor told her that she would not be able to deliver naturally and would need a c-section because of the size of her baby, she and her husband Matthew decided to get another opinion on the matter. They reached out to Matthew's grandmother, an experienced midwife, and explored their options. Already not too keen on hospitals and clear that she wanted a natural birth, at 19 years old and 31 weeks pregnant, Sara-Beth switched over to the midwifery model of care and planned for a home birth with the help of Matthew's grandmother. Sara-Beth has a solid sense of confidence in her body's ability to do what it's meant to do, and it comes across when she talks about the rest of her pregnancy and her birth. Sarah-Beth believes that “labor is not a sickness,” and is all about putting empowering information out there to support women in having a home birth if that's what they want for themselves and their families. This difference has left Sarah Beth's client feeling upset, and she's looking for guidance on how to support him without introducing rewards or prizes into her child-centered play therapy (CCPT) practice. I explain why staying true to the CCPT model, which avoids external rewards, is crucial for the child's emotional growth and self-regulation. Instead, I suggest alternatives like offering a simple snack as a way to mark the end of each session without attaching any conditions or expectations. I encourage Sarah Beth to stay the course with reflective responses, acknowledging her client's feelings, and focusing on the deeper issues underlying his jealousy.
