Negotiation Dynamics: Roggio concluded that in these types of negotiations, there is "always a cost," and the Taliban usually wins.

Police in Tshwane are working to resolve a tense hostage situation in Mamelodi East's Buffer Zone. A 32-year-old police constable has been holding his grandmother, nephew, and another young boy inside a house since 8 AM yesterday. Authorities report the officer fired two shots before police arrived. Hostage negotiators and the Special Task Force are on the scene, engaging with the constable, who is said to be cooperating. According to host Tara, the U.S. is facing a humiliating "hostage situation" with China. She argues that the recent increase in Chinese student visas from 500,000 to 600,000 is not a sign of goodwill but a forced concession. Tara claims China is using its monopoly on rare earth minerals—vital for the U.S. auto industry—as leverage. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with arts and culture editor Jessica Steinberg hosting and speaking with Jonathan Dekel-Chen, father of released hostage Sagui Dekel-Chen. Dekel-Chen, a dual Israeli-American citizen, was a vocal and visible hostage parent throughout the months of his son's captivity. Sagui Dekel-Chen was taken hostage on October 7, 2023 from Kibbutz Nir Oz, while his pregnant wife and two young daughters were hiding in their safe room. He talks about the relief that he and the family felt upon seeing Sagui released home to Israel, the challenges that Sagui and the rest of the family and Nir Oz community still face, and the sense of rebirth that Sagui feels post-captivity. For 496 days, Sagui didn't know if his own family had survived, as well as extended members of his family and friends. Dekel-Chen also reflects on the sense of abandonment felt by many hostage families from the Israeli government throughout the months of the war, and particularly now, as the army has returned to fighting in Gaza, leaving 59 hostages still in captivity. He speaks about the tremendous support he and the other hostage families received from the US government, from both the Biden and Trump administrations and his surprise that American Jewish organizations didn't join together to support the hostage families. On May 17th, 2024, police are called out to a home in Surprise, AZ for an unknown shooting. They learn a woman, Allie, had escaped from being held hostage, but her 6-month-old baby, Jaxson, was still inside with his father and in danger. That man, Todd Marchetti, then shoots his own baby multiple times, and officers go inside to rescue Jaxson. A standoff then ensues, until the house unexpectedly goes up in flames during negotiations.
