In our “big event” culture, Christmas is always the biggest annual event of all. We plan for it, prepare for it and celebrate it for over a month, and it doesn’t even matter if we are believers or not. When it comes to Christmas, we all want the same thing. We want Christmas to be perfect. We have this hope that everyone will get along. We want perfect decorations, we want to give (and get) the perfect gifts, and we even want perfect desserts. After all, it’s Christmas, and isn’t Christmas supposed to be perfect? The reality is, in this imperfect world, Christmas will never be, and has never been, perfect. This week, we will take a look back at that first Christmas which was anything but perfect for Mary and for Joseph. You see, the only thing perfect about Christmas then, and Christmas now, is that perfect baby who was in the manger. God gave the world the perfect gift for an absolutely imperfect world.

DECEMBER 29, 2024 REV. KENDRA BALLIET ORGANIST JAMES ROSS * Please Stand If Able Prelude Announcements *Call to Worship In this last week of our celebration of the beloved hymn classic, “Joy to the World,” we hear this Psalm of Joy juxtaposed with the story of Jesus’ family fleeing with him to Egypt in order to save his life. So, what’s joy got to do with it? The Hebrew root for “joy” that is used 54 times in the Hebrew scriptures–ranan (pronounced raw-nan’)–means “to shout, to cry out” and to “overcome.” Our shouting for joy trains the lungs and the courage to shout aloud for the overcoming of injustice. How will we use our exuberance for the righting of wrongs for the sake of the wonders of God’s love to come upon the earth? Sing a new song to the Lord. Lift your hearts with gratitude and Joy, Compassionate Joy! Your steadfast love and faithfulness is ever present in our lives with Joy, Compassionate Joy! Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. - Psalm 148 * Praise Hymn – “Angels We Have Heard on High” # 238 The Wreath - Let us pray: Holy Living One, You who are our Joy. Give us the strength we need to face the cruelty of the world and meet it with as much Hope, Love and Peace as we can. We give you thanks for the time we have had to contemplate what joy means in our lives and prepare ourselves for the work we will commit to in this next year, offering compassion in all we do. Let wonders of your love rule our hearts this day. Let wonders of your love rule our church this day. Let wonders of your love rule the world this day… in the name of Compassion. Amen. We sing Joy to the World, Heaven and nature sing with joy, Compassionate Joy! Amen! Jesus is a striking historical figure. Attempts to summarize him, to boil down his message or his work, have often failed for the basic reason that he comes to us, not as a simple person, but a complex one. He offers grace to the weakest and the most unholy of people, yet demands more from them than anyone in history had before. What are we to make of him? How do we rightly speak about these two distinct parts of Jesus’ own message? What insight might Matthew’s text today provide for us?
The story of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fleeing to Egypt shows us that because our God is faithful, we are able to trust Him.
Christians confess that Jesus is “truly God and truly man,” but what does that mean for how we understand his experience as a toddler? Join us as we explore how and why the early years of Jesus help us to walk in faith.
Evil is bent on destroying the good, but God's purpose cannot be thwarted.

*So far, in our study of the book of Matthew, we've learned that Jesus: 1. Comes from the line of David 2. The New Moses *Pastor Ben also, briefly explains the term "Out of Egypt" (Hosea 11:1) 1. The place where the ten plagues took place 2. A type of "the world" 3. God wants to bring His people out of Egypt *He also gives us 2 amazing characteristics of Joseph: 1. Joseph believed 2. Joseph obeyed You must listen to today's podcast teaching in order to get the full context of it. So here's a question: Was it circumstance that Jesus came "out of Egypt", or was it God breathed? "What happened to Christmas?"
Through these verses we see two themes that work in our lives like two pedals on a bike. The left pedal and right pedal. For one pedal we have the Providence of God. The plans of God. The inevitability of God's events. but then on the other pedal, we have the urgency and danger that’s right there about to happen. We have the persistence of man, and in our case today, namely Joseph. His being obedient. His propensity and track record to be an example of trusting the angelic commands at their words, and obeying, even when obeying means very real, and often arduous tasks.
In one Gospel, Joseph works with governing authorities; in another, he works against them. It is a choice that transcends Joseph’s time: in every culture, in every decision, in nearly every moment, Christians and churches have to decide whether they support the particular actions of the state (while still honoring civil authority as ordained by God) or oppose state action through some appropriate means. The questions are perennial for people and institutions of faith. Rev. Larry Hayward preaches on the First Sunday after Christmas. The Scripture lesson is Matthew 2:13-23.

12/29/2019 Sunday Sermon
As we prepare for the changing of another year, our "resolutions" of years gone by haunt us. They are constant reminders of how terrible we are as planners and how often our plans fail to take into consideration the likelihood of pain, suffering and death. Following the departure of the Magi, Joseph's plan to return to Nazareth with Mary and Jesus took an abrupt turn. Yet, after a detour of a couple hundred miles lasting 2-3 years, the holy family did get home by God’s plan of grace.

Have you ever refused to be comforted? The pain of mothers losing their children is, uncomfortably, at the center of the Christmas story. But even in this bleak prophecy there is hope of the Messiah coming to restore all things.

God gives us messages to guide and help us. We see this in how He dealt with Joseph and the Magi.
