We are back! Finally. It has been far too long. Today, we brought on Seerut Chawla. Seerut was originally coming on as a "Right to Reply" from our previous episode that we did on her account. However, after discussing for quite some time before recording, we realized we all wanted to focus on talking about Instagram Therapy, and what a mess it has made. There is so, so much more to talk about with Instagram Therapy. Seerut and I are hoping to do another episode in the near future to discuss things more specifically, with examples, but that's all for now, folks. I hope you enjoy today's episode! Zaddies, Zaddiettes, Zommies, Zons, Zisters, Zives, Zusbands, this is a call to action, there is a MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS! In a world that is quickly trying to correct the past and push towards a more amicable future, shouldn't we be concerned with the well being of each individual? Seerut recently shared some alarming statistics about men's mental health - prompted by young men's fascination with Andrew Tate - on social media and to her surprise was met with backlash. Followers encouraging suicide, homelessness and depression. That's when it was blaringly obvious this discussion needed to happen. The patriarchy is a popular phrase these days, but is the common man who's struggling much like any other person truly a patriarch? When men make up less of the population, yet majority of the homeless, addicted and suicidal, what does that mean? We may not have the answers, but maybe a discussion and some catharsis is a step in the right direction.Seerut is a psychotherapist based in London, trained at the University of Roehampton in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. Sorry for that epic podcast delay… again. I didn’t know what I was doing with moving my podcast hosting, so it delayed everything a lot. Today I’m sharing my conversation with Seerut Chawla. (We recorded back at the beginning of April! Agh!) We talk about her brief foray into cancelling someone on the internet, her change of heart, and both of our experiences waking up to the insanity and cult dynamics of cancel culture… It’s a good one!Find Seerut’s instagram, twitter, and website.Housekeeping:ALSO! FINALLY! I’ve figured out how to transfer my podcast to my newsletter on substack, and to have it feed out to the established listings on apple, spotify, googs, etc… what that means is you can keep listening to it on a regular podcast player app, and/or you can sign up for my newsletter on substack and get the new podcast episodes send straight to your email (among other things.) Go to “manage your subscription” on substack, and add the podcast feed for the podcast app of your choice. If you are a paying subscriber, you can also add your unique paid podcast feed to apple, and maybe other players (not sure that it works on spotify) and you’ll also be able to access the audio versions of paid posts on that feed, as well as any rare premium episodes.Upcoming schedule for episode and posts:Right now, I’ll probably release an actual podcast episode, like this, once a month. But maybe more. But I will be releasing new content, on this newsletter, once a week. Every week I will alternate free and paid content. This week is free. Next week will be a paid post (another deleted chapter from Tired as F*ck) and the following week will be another free post (the story of the one time where I accidentally spear headed an internet pile-on), and on and on alternating like that: free, paid, free, paid.THANKS! Should social media have warning ads like cigarette packs? We all know the bright side of social networks where we share memes, tell stories, upload photos, memories, and help us grow professionally, but not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Social media have become an unstoppable monster where criticism, abuse, and the discharge of hate have increased more and more, hiding in anonymity on many occasions. In this episode, I had a conversation with Seerut Chawla. She defends the importance of talking with responsibilities on social networks and using it to deliver messages of conscience intelligently. After living the culture of cancellation on both sides, today, she tries to warn others of its consequences. We will talk about how the use of social media affects us individually and collectively, the main character syndrome, responsibility, and trauma. In addition, we will discuss the differences between trauma, wounding, and pain. You who are reading me from the internet, don't miss this episode! ABOUT SEERUT CHAWLA She works using an integrative model (which means incorporating different therapeutic styles) depending on the client and the circumstances. TLYG talks to renowned psychotherapist, Seerut Chawla, about the culture of fragility that is cultivated online and how that is doing a disservice to all. @seerutkchawla https://www.seerutkchawla.com/ Seerut is a psychotherapist based in London; I trained at the University of Roehampton in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. This week Aleen's joined by Seerut Chawla (@seerutkchawla), a London based psychotherapist who focuses on Trauma Informed Therapy, who has a tough love approach to mental health advocacy on social media. Seerut shares her perspective on what therapy has become on Instagram aka the phenomenon she calls “insta therapy”, and examples of how to spot it. She talks about why she thinks it's not helpful or genuine and more on why you should avoid it. Then, Seerut defines what trauma actually is and explains why it's different than what you may think. This leads to a discussion of the downsides and potentially lasting effects of taking mental health advice that you get from social media too seriously and why it doesn't replace seeking professional help. Finally, we end breaking down the DST confession topic of the week (hint: grab your popcorn).
Carter and Keri are joined by special guests Seerut Chawla and Josh Slocum (Disaffected Podcast), and they begin by extracting lessons from fairy tales. This leads to a broader discussion about children and their need for parents. Keri then asks the question of the century: "What is wrong with people?" and the conversation takes a dark turn into the world of some repugnant sexual proclivities that can be found on Twitter. The group turns to a general discussion of cluster B personality traits, and asks what role culture and philosophy play in encouraging widespread dysfunction. This leads to a critique of modern academia and contemplation of a leftist agenda that seeks to normalize pornography in high school libraries. They briefly discuss the Rittenhouse case, with Seerut expressing perplexity over American gun culture, before turning to the rise in short attention spans encouraged by applications such as TikTok and Instagram. Seerut explains the misuse of the word "valid" in a therapeutic setting before the show ends with a heated disagreement over the status of sweet potato desserts and dubiously-named "salads." On this episode of The Dr. Tyna Show, I am delighted to interview my new friend Seerut K Chawla. Originally from India, Seerut is a Psychotherapist who lives in London. She's practiced in the NHS, and now runs her own private practice. She has a special interest in personal responsibility & resilience and now teaches that in an online membership. You can see why I adore her. I'm a huge fan and have followed her for some time on Instagram and we finally got to sit down for a candid conversation. The best part is that we don't live in the same echo chamber and don't agree on all things, but having interesting and thoughtful conversation with intelligent and emotionally mature people is the BEST. And we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I hope you enjoy this episode as well. As always, if you have any questions for the show please email us at podcast@drtyna.com. Carter and Keri are joined by special guests Seerut Chawla and Clifton Duncan. Clifton opens by relaying the tale of a Broadway actress who was fired for not "getting the jab," and the group observes how reasonable, rational discussion about the government's response to COVID has been suppressed. They recall the 1976 swine flu debacle, former governor Schwarzenegger's elitist contempt for people who haven't been vaccinated, and what it means to be an "essential" worker. Seerut notes that we are "surrounded by people who don't care what's true," and Clifton optimistically channels Aristotle's belief that truth tends to win out in the end. Before he needs to head out, Clifton then shares his gratitude that many people are waking up to the truth and that he's able to be a part of a network of like-minded, interesting people who are concerned about the state of the world. Next, Carter introduces a "Tale of Two Cities" challenge, asking Seerut and Keri to identify the location of two different cities that recently attempted to implement vaccination requirements. The trio finishes out the show with a discussion of the dopamine cycle and stress management in the era of smart devices, and Seerut answers a question from chat about identifying non-woke therapists. In this episode, Charles talks to Kenny Xu, Author of An Inconvenient Minority: The Attack on Asian American Excellence and the Fight for Meritocracy. They discuss the Harvard admission case, Asian-American stereotypes, The 1619 Project, and reparations. Next, Charles speaks to Seerut Chawla, a London-based psychotherapist. They discuss what is good about the West and what its detractors, mostly westerners themselves, get wrong or take out of context in their attacks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
