*** TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual abuse, Sex trafficking, Labor trafficking, Cult, Suicide ***Amanda shares her story, starting when she was just a little girl being raised in what she described as an ultraconservative Christian cult. She was groomed from the beginning to not say no to a man and to be a homemaker. She was molested and sexually assaulted, with no idea how to deal with it at such an early age that it turned into rage. After a variety of events in her life, including sex trafficking, and a terrible car accident, Amanda became extremely suicidal, and still felt like her abuser was the only option for survival. Amanda bought a plane ticket and a puppy and flew back home, telling him where she was and waiting for him to come to find her. He never did, that's when she realized she needed more change. Amanda read books, listened to podcasts, and she started healing. She got involved with Selah Freedom, an organization for sex trafficking, working with them for several years. Then, she fully understood that she had been involved in sex trafficking as well. She started going to therapy and has been going ever since. Amanda is now in a healthy relationship, happily married, and trying for children. She has also suffered from fertility issues due to all the abuse she encountered, yet still having a positive outlook on it all. She has helped many get out of abuse and trafficking with her own experiences. About Amanda: Amanda Catarzi is a survivor. In her past she has worked for Selah Freedom, helping others find their voice and use it effectively, allowing them to heal. She is inspiring to many, using her trauma and experiences as a learning tool for others. She now is a marketing strategist and runs a successful content agency, Inkery Co., is happily married, and trying for a baby. After experiencing such trauma in her life, she still has a positive outlook on life. Elizabeth Fisher Good is the co-founder and CEO of Selah Freedom and The Selah Way Foundation, an organization that helps free women from the sex trade and provide a safe housing environment for the victims of this life. Since 2010, Her work with the organization has freed over 10,000 women from sex work and prostitution, and has created demonstrable change in laws across the country, as well as around the world. Nearly half a million children every year are sold into sex trafficking. 1 out of every 3 girls, and 1 out of every 5 boys will experience sexual abuse in their lifetime. Elizabeth is working to make that number zero. Through telling these womens' stories at their court hearings, and confronting the perpetrators of their abuse, the victims are able to overcome their past, and inspire others that may be in similar situations to have hope for the future. Elizabeth has recently had a new book published through Harper Collins, "Groomed: Overcoming the Messages that Shaped Our Past and Limit Our Future", and has been an advocate, speaker, and leader in the field of sex trafficking awareness and prevention for over a decade. We discuss the surprising and unlikely themes of the book, which is less about sex trafficking, and more about the grooming by those around us, which can lead to the proclivity to create the trafficking trade itself. We also discuss how the Selah Way Foundation was able to incorporate their programs into law enforcement agencies and enact real world policy changes in America, and the ways that people are groomed for appearance, invisibility, judgement, and finances. Our Special Guest is Chicago’s Kara Thompson, Midwest Prevention Coordinator with Selah Freedom, a national organization fighting to bring light into the darkness of sex trafficking. The episode, originating from the Alicia Lopez Pure Romance Studios, commences with Glenn reminding us of the two charitable arms of Sex in the Pews: combating human sex slave trafficking and genital mutilation, why they have so much in common and why 9/11 may have been caused by the latter. Kara explains how she became interested in sex slave trafficking as a fourteen year old, what being “sextorted” is all about, how to get people to pay attention to this most crucial cause in the middle of the COVID era, what young people and parents should be aware of, the history and progress of Selah Freedom, about their “Sex, Lies and Media” Prevention Training, and how parents sometimes respond when being confronted with the possibility their child interacts online. Coach Glenn shares about the “sex slave corridor” between Orlando and Tampa, his family’s brush with the issue, how one may relate to a predator and how to find one’s compassion in the midst of this tragedy, plus much more. Even with today’s show covering such a serious topic, it is still “organized fun with a purpose” and ain’t going to be boring. Powerful and poignant adult content. A portion of all proceeds donated to combat human sex slave trafficking and genital mutilation.
“Release means reclaiming our minds, our lives, and our futures from the negative messages that held us back. Release allows us to name what was stolen and who we were before it was stolen and to start doing the work that has to be done to get it back.” – Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good, page 144 of Groomed Overcoming messages that shaped our past and limit our future—that’s what Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good’s new book Groomed is all about. And she’s not just talking about survivors of sex trafficking that she works with on a daily basis, but all of us. Even our children. She’s here to talk with us today about her book, her own life lessons, and how we can move closer to who we truly are by moving beyond messages that limit us. Elizabeth is a powerhouse of a woman and I’m so honored to share her with you. In 2011, Elizabeth cofounded what is today the leading provider to domestic survivors of sex trafficking, Selah Freedom. This organization provides Prevention curriculum for over 10,000 K-12th grade children, life-saving safe housing and resources to survivors, and education on this issue to millions annually. It also trains and partners with law enforcement, the FBI and United States Attorney’s Office to bring freedom to survivors and has been deemed a model organization serving this population. With her direction, she has led the organization in a financial growth of over 200% annually. She has also launched The Selah Way Foundation, a global network of leading service providers with three initiatives: Prevention, Protection and Provision. The goal of these initiatives is to get ahead of this issue in hopes of eradicating it and become a model and training arm for the international community. Elizabeth is a passionate pioneer and inspirational thought leader in the movement to eradicate sex trafficking and expose the root of the issue, childhood sexual abuse. She has spearheaded an awakening and brought partners and resources together with proven solutions to save lives. She is also the author of Groomed (Harper Collins, 2020). Using her own story of abuse, family tragedy, and rebellion, Elizabeth Melendez Fisher guides readers toward an understanding that grooming is oftentimes subtle, but it's always life-altering. She offers readers a way to overcome their past, starting with all-important but rarely explored idea of a selah, or a time of rest and reflection, and exploring active ways to forgive and move forward to a new level of freedom. Elizabeth has been highlighted and described as, “Part healer, part businesswoman, all resolve—if Selah Freedom is bringing light into the darkness, as the slogan says, then she is the one behind the megawatt.” She is the recipient of the prestigious New York City Global Business Leader Award and Tampa Bay Business Woman of the Year Award. Elizabeth has her Bachelor’s degree in Communications and her Master's in Clinical Psychology. In this episode we talk about how we are groomed: · For Appearance: “You exist only to make me look good.” · To Be Invisible: “Your existence doesn’t matter to me.” · To Endure: “You’re stronger than everyone else. You can handle it all.” · For Judgement: “You are unforgivable.” · For Financial Fear: “There’s not enough for you.” · To rely on our phones for everything. We also dive into the power of discernment and how the beliefs we were groomed to take on can suffocate our true identity. This is a VERY powerful episode. I hope you’ll tune in, listen, and grow along side us.
