Discover insights into creating fulfilling work environments, the evolution of remote work, and strategies for recognizing and preventing burnout.Key Takeaways[01:28 - 04:58] Dane introduces Cali Ressler, author of "Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It" and "Why Managing Sucks and How to Fix It," Director of Talent and Organizational Consulting at Accenture[02:39 - 04:53] Unexpected, Fulfilling, and Never-ending[04:55 - 09:00] Fulfillment in work and in becoming a mother of four kids, publishing books, consulting with organizations across industries to transform their cultures and elevate employee experiences[09:03 - 11:04] A continuum and balance of saying "yes" and "no" and thoughts on being pulled into the right opportunities.[11:06 - 16:22] Results-only work environments, Cali was one of the co-creators of that program, giving employees autonomy and accountability to deliver results[16:23 - 19:02] The outdated idea of "manage by walking around" and mindsets of that ideology are still alive in a post-pandemic, virtually-accepted world.[17:33 - 18:58] Status in Teams, Slack, instant-messaging platforms. And how people color-code themselves and their activities to work online. Subconscious "MBWA" mentality.[19:04 - 20:18] "How should we be looking at this?" Running reports to understand behavior and employee output during the pandemic[20:18 - 22:49] Talking about trust in teams, being curious about where people are mentally, and the pandemic causing people to wake up to see how we could work differently.[22:49 - 25:03] Decentralized responsibility for workplace design and employee experience is fuel for success[25:04 - 27:08] Four fundamental needs in wellbeing: Health, Financial, Mental, and Physical[27:08 - 29:53] Cali asks Dane about human bodies working on fumes, and Dane references Dan Miller, a health coach. He talks about how, chemically, our bodies aren't designed to run on adrenaline and cortisol all day and how modern life triggers those chemicals via social media, phones, email, and more.[29:53 - 34:48] Recognizing burnout early: prioritizing sleep and exercise, asking for help, having a list of people to keep you on track[35:36 - 41:46] Clarity is essential for successful teams now and in the future. Big "P" purpose and Small "p" purpose[41:47 - 43:20] "We're losing the thread, we're losing the plot in the story, and we need to bring it back"[43:28 - 47:56] Dane recaps the interview with Cali

I talk a lot about the importance of brand messaging on this show and with my clients 1:1. And for sure, brand messages are essential for your business - you want to ensure that your ideal client knows what you offer and what makes you unique. But storytelling takes things to a whole new level. Storytelling is all about building emotional connections with your ideal clients and creating a sense of authenticity and identity for your brand. It's not just about communicating your business value - it's about connecting with your client on a deeper, more personal level. When you incorporate storytelling into your marketing and branding strategies, you're not just telling people what you do; you're showing them who you are. This emotional connection is crucial for consultants and coaches, where trust and credibility are key. You might think that you don't have exciting stories to tell, that it's just a gimmick, or that your clients won't care. But that is not the case! Today I'll be going over the four stories your business needs and give you some tips on how to get started in crafting those stories. In this episode, you'll hear: The four stories that a business needs How to get started in crafting those stories Four key stories that consultants and coaches should consider sharing in their business Incorporating storytelling into marketing to create a more meaningful and impactful presence for your business Why curating and practicing stories is vital to create a competitive edge Where to dive in: [02:34] Learn how to share your, "What I do..." story and the framework you need to use. [06:45] Craft your business backstory and craft it to the person you're talking to. [14:25] Hear about the most important story you'll tell, your "WHY story." [18:59] Tune in for the big recap and what you need to do next. Next steps: Curate the stories that relate to your business – your own stories and client stories. Pick one of the stories to focus on first -I'd recommend you start with the “what I do” story since it's the least vulnerable and the one you'll use the most and then practice it If you want to take your storytelling to the next level – definitely join us in the Purpose to Profits Academy, my membership community that offers weekly live masterclasses and hot seats, role plays and other action learning opportunities. Starting in May we'll be working on developing the scripts and practicing our storytelling so that when we're in front of clients, we'll be on muscle memory. Today, we're talking again about burnout and the CURE. I had a fantastic conversation with burnout expert Rachelle Stone and Lori Smith a few weeks back. I had a sense then I should open up about my struggle with burnout and what I learned from it, but then I chickened out. I went the safe route and did a couple of interviews with outstanding entrepreneurs. But then I was coaching a client about finding the courage to own their story and use it to help others. I realized it was time for me to do the same. So here it goes! Hi, I'm Betsy. I'm a recovering stressaholic. It's been 30 minutes since my last email check. Okay, five minutes. The truth is, I have struggled with burnout for years due to the challenges of running a business and raising kids as a single mom. Recently, after a cross-country move and becoming an empty nester, I experienced another burnout at new levels. This burnout was more like soul burnout or spiritual fatigue that no trips to the spa, bubble baths, or even a new set of supplements would solve. This experience forced me to take a hard look at my approach to balance and self-care. I realized that I had been neglecting my needs and boundaries around work, and I needed to make some changes in my life and business to prevent burnout from taking over again. That's why I want to share my journey of recovery and reinvention! I will also share the practical tips and tools that have helped me bounce-back from burnout. So, let's get started with the CURE method for burnout recovery! Where To Dive In [2:11] Compassion. The first step to curing burnout. [04:07] How to know of you're burnedout or just busy and stressed. [05:13] Understanding. The next step to get beyond symptoms and get to root causes. [05:38] Categories that will help you understand your burnout. [06:32] Identify the categories contributing to your burnout. [09:09] Reimaging and reinventing your life and business. [09:29] Why and how to do a start/stop/continue on your life and business. Learn where you really need to focus so you can get out of burnout. [18:43] What is giving your energy and what is draining you? How can this change your life and business? [19:17] Energy and capacity management. [23:30] Why you need to focus on doing the things "only you can do" and let go of the rest. Next Steps I want to leave you with three actions you can take today to start your burnout recovery journey: • First, take a break! Whether it's a five-minute breathing exercise or a day off, prioritize rest and self-care.• Second, journal about your own burnout experience. What are the messages it's trying to tell you? What changes can you make to address the root causes?• And finally, consider seeking support from a coach, therapist, or supportive community. Sometimes it takes a village to overcome burnout. And if your burnout is because you have work you have fallen out of love with or are just tired of growing your business alone, I'm here for you. Head to www.betsyjordyn.com/services to learn how I can empower you to create a business and life you love. Remember, burnout is not something that happens because you're lazy or can't cope with stress. You can find your path toward recovery and reinvention with compassion, understanding, a willingness to reimagine, and vigilant energy management. Take care! Ready to take your place as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the C-Suite? Today, I am sharing my secrets to working with the C-Suite in this first episode of my new Organizational Consulting 101 Series. More and more people want to leave corporate to start their own consulting or coaching businesses for so many reasons: They want control over their career, time, and earning power They want to make a significant difference They want to help younger versions of themselves, or they want to create healthier work environments And out of all the businesses they could start, many choose to consult or coach because of the difference they want to make in the world. Are you Ready to Be a Consultant& Executive Advisor? Click Here for a Free Quiz to Find Out >>> So, to achieve these impact and income goals – they want to advise influential senior leaders in organizations. Marketing and all things related to marketing and getting clients are the #1 pain point for new and seasoned consultants and coaches. And this is a pain point we're all aware of as we make the transition from employee to entrepreneur, but there's more involved with this marketing challenge than meets the eye. A second challenge is the transition from leader to consultant or coach, which is a whole new job requiring very different skill sets and perspectives, which I'll share more about in this episode. Before I hosted this business podcast and had my brand positioning, messaging, mentoring, and brand marketing agency, I was an internal organization development consultant at Walt Disney World. Disney is where I got my start. I had the great fortune of landing this dream job when I was about to turn 30 years old, and I had the opportunity to work with and advise exceptional leaders on visible, strategic projects like the DAK brand relaunch and the Basics project. When I left Disney to start my own business, I grew it quickly from $0-$300K within 18 months because I knew how to work with executives and their teams. I learned how to influence them and create results without positional authority. And I'll be sharing these fundamental principles in this episode. In this episode, you'll hear: How your role as a consultant or coach is NOT as a contract worker or extra pair of hands Why your client is not the organization Why your position will never be on the org chart Why orgs don't care about your title of consultant, coach, or trainer One of the main reasons people fail as consultants to the C-Suite Only personally powerful consultants and coaches can speak truth to power. Ellen Snee has worked at the forefront of women's leadership development for more than 25 years. But for the first 18 of those years, the front line of leadership wasn't an Ivy League MBA program or a high-end consulting firm: It was an international order of Catholic nuns.During her time in the order, Ellen was surrounded by smart, educated, committed, and fun women who held roles of authority that were uncommon for women in the 1970s. She gained a number of essential — and, happily, transferable — skills: How to discern a call or deep desire, how to work collaboratively with other women, and how to be a savvy operator within male hierarchies. This experience laid the foundation for Ellen's guiding passion: to become an expert in women's leadership development and to change the world one woman at a time.  Ellen left the convent while still in graduate school, receiving her EdD in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University in 1994. She turned the conceptual frameworks from her dissertation on women in roles of authority into the launch of a successful consulting firm, Fine Line Consulting. Before long, she arrived in the corporate sector running leadership and coaching programs for executive women in Fortune 500 companies such as Pfizer, Schwab, Marriott, Goodyear and many others. For 15 years she provided one-to-one coaching to high potential and executive level women across the country.A move to California in 2001 led to work in Silicon Valley at the major tech companies such as Apple, Cisco, KPG, and Citrix. In 2009 Ellen was hired by global technology company VMware as VP Leadership Development and Organizational Consulting. She went on to lead Global Talent Development and in 2013 launched VMwomen, a business initiative designed to attract, retain, develop, and advance talented women. She has spoken extensively at corporate conferences including the Conference Board, Catalyst, California Governors Association, Marriott, Pfizer, Panasonic, Amgen, as well as Boston College, University of Michigan and Presidio Business Schools. Ellen is a member of the International Women's Forum, an invitation-only organization of global women leaders. She is an advisor to She Can and Rise Up, organizations that empower young women in Africa and Asia to become leaders. She is a global advisor for How Women Lead and a Limited Partner with How Women Invest venture fund. Ellen is the author of Lead: How Women in Charge Claim Their Authority (She Writes Press), in which she shares her wisdom and experience with all talented women seeking to accelerate their careers. Lead differs from other management and leadership books in several important ways. The locus of authority throughout is women's experience within 3 vital perspectives: personal, relational, and systemic. Ellen's Self-Others-Systems model recognizes that women are always in simultaneous relationships with themselves, others, and the systems in which they live and work. All of these relationships overlap and interact dynamically when someone exercises their leadership in a role of authority. Full of insights, examples, and stories, Lead is firmly grounded in psychological research. She has her experiences and illustrated them in such a way as to be both inspiring and instructive to women on their way up. Along the way, Ellen urges women to find and speak with their unique voice and claim their personal power. In 2015 Ellen returned to the work she loves, accelerating the career advancement of talented women through executive coaching. Based in the San Francisco Bay area, she continues to coach and advise women leaders and executives around the world, and to speak at companies, academic institutions and leadership conferences.

Ellen Snee grew up outside of New York City, the oldest of five kids in an Irish Catholic family. On Wednesday nights their parish priest, who was a family friend, would join their family for hot dogs and play cards. One night, Ellen's devout father asked the priest to bless his children. They all closed their eyes, and he said some prayers. As they were praying, and all was calm, twelve-year-old Ellen decided what she wanted to be. When they were done, she stood up and declared, “When I grow up, I'm going to be a priest!” The room went silent. Years later, Ellen attended a Jesuit university where the curriculum and atmosphere appealed to her. While she knew becoming a priest was not possible, Ellen discovered a group of female Jesuits, the Religious of the Sacred Heart, and joined their order as a nun. She was drawn to this community, dedicated to the mission of education, service, and a life of prayer. It was also a time when work was being done to make it possible for women to become priests. So Ellen was hopeful that it could still occur within her lifetime. Within religious life, Ellen held many positions as a teacher, campus minister, and then pursued her doctorate in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University.  Ellen left the convent while still in graduate school. She turned the conceptual frameworks from her dissertation on women in roles of authority into the launch of a successful consulting firm, Fine Line Consulting. Interview on "M&A Stories from Leadership and Cultural Perspective" with Richard A. Vincent Show Notes: A large number of uncertainties in M&A happen due to cultural differences e.g. when a Dutch company buys an Asian company. Leadership can define the strategy but leadership also defines the culture. How do people behave? How do people act together as a team? Do they operate in siloes or do they act as a cohesive leadership team? Culture is usually an afterthought and most often, the effort for cultural integration is highly underestimated. Culturally in the Netherlands, people try to do all the things themselves as a culture whereas, in Germany, they may engage external resources. In economies like Singapore, Indonesia, and other parts of Asia, they regularly engage external resources. For culture, one could use the “Competing Values Framework” of Cameron-Quinn. One aspect of cultural difference is the difference of continents i.e. between Europe and China, India, ASEAN where the cultural differences are bigger than between countries in a region. Watch this episode and learn more about what Richard A. Vincent has to say about Leadership and Culture in M&A transactions. Richard A. Vincent has worked in human resources for over two decades, with extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, international HR, and in senior EMEA & APAC management roles in Executive Search, Leadership & Organizational Consulting such as Korn Ferry (Europe & Asia), PageGroup (Germany) and Robert Half (Europe & Asia). He founded RIVIONT in 2017 focusing on Leadership Advisory, Interim Management, and Executive Search solutions. COVID-19 continues to dominate the news and continues to present challenges. Jill Devine wanted to get a medical professional on to discuss this very challenging virus. Cindy Lefton joined Jill this week to provide a nurses’ perspective. Cindy has many accolades: she is a frontline care provider ER nurse in St. Louis, she is the pro bono Director of Research for The DAISY Foundation, and she is also the Vice President of Organizational Consulting at Psychological Associates, a St. Louis consulting company that applies behavioral science to business performance. In 2010, Cindy began her partnership with The DAISY Foundation, an organization that recognizes and rewards nurses who go above and beyond in the service of patients and their families. Cindy's role as Director of Research at DAISY, a volunteer position, allowed the organization to grow exponentially and to provide recognition and encouragement to thousands of nurses. By recognizing the good being done by nurses around the world, Cindy has contributed to decreased rates of compassion fatigue and burnout, as well as increased nurse engagement in healthcare facilities that have adopted the DAISY Award. She recently spoke about extraordinary nurses and the need for meaningful recognition based upon a nationwide study of 1,100 nurses. Cindy told Jill stories about the incredible dedication of nurses, in general, but especially with the pandemic. She said the most important thing we can do to re-energize nurses is to simply say, “thank you”. When asked her opinion on the future of COVID-19, Cindy said it’s such a nasty disease and there’s still a lot about the disease medical professionals don’t have answers to. She said the Southern Hemisphere is beginning their fall/winter season and what happens during this time will provide valuable insight for the United States. COVID-19 is killing a lot of people and those who survive could experience long-term effects. She’s uncertain when or if life will go back to “normal”, but the development of a vaccine will play a major role. Until then, we must practice social distancing, washing our hands constantly, and wearing masks. You can access Cindy’s LinkedIn profile to learn more about her and how you can help. For more information, find Michael at www.arcintegrated.com   Most human beings struggle with change, which is why we dove deep into strategies and ways to manage change (in whatever form it comes) in a healthy, effective and productive way. Here are some tips to apply to help you:     Things We Learned From This Episode   First off, it's crucial to create a space where you are compassionate and kind to yourself while dealing with a change or tough period. As you look at the situation at hand, be sure to be empathetic to yourself. There are seven aspects of change that will help you deal more successfully with turmoil and changes. Michael uses the acronym CHANGES: Cognition, Heart, Action, Nourishment, Guts, Environment, and Spirit. To change beliefs that are getting in the way of accomplishing what you desire, you'll want to do two things: evaluate your belief and how it's showing up in your life (journal and track it) and find examples of ways to disrupt this belief. By tracking your behavior and disrupting your unwanted beliefs, you'll get a clearer picture of what and how you can change. Incorporate the 4 R's to develop greater self-awareness around stress and how your body reacts. The 4 R's are: reaction or response (notice how your body feels when you are in reaction mode versus responding with choice) and resistance and relaxation (what does your body feel like when you're resisting something or when you're most relaxed). Use your body cues to help you learn what triggers you and how to get out ahead.   You can get Michael's book as well as a free workbook to go with it and the audio version at www.thechangesbook.com.           Enjoying the show? The guest on today's episode of the Profit by Design is Dr. Christine Allen, a Workplace Psychologist and Executive Coach. Dr. Chris and Dr. Sabrina discuss what small business owners need to know about using psychological assessments effectively in the hiring process. When used properly, psychological assessments dramatically increase chances of hiring right. Yet, there are pitfalls that come up with psychological testing that small business owners should be aware of.    Dr. Christine Allen is a board-certified coach, a distinguished fellow of the New York State Psychological Association, past president of the New York State Psychological Association-Division for Organizational Consulting and Work Psychology, and she's co-chair of the Leadership Institute for the New York State Psychological Association. She's also an official member of the Forbes Coaches Council. Dr. Allen has been providing executive coaching, team building, talent selection and assessment, and other training to senior leaders since 2009. As a result of Dr. Allen's twenty years of experience as a clinical psychologist, she's is an excellent listener and she quickly grasps the underlying issues with which individuals and teams struggle. As a licensed psychologist, she is particularly skilled in using assessments for hiring and selection.    Show Highlights:   Dr. Chris shares some of her background with us and she talks about how she came to be working with personality assessments. Why Dr. Chris chose to work in the area that she does. What a 'bad hire', using the traditional hiring process without the use of assessments, could end up costing you in the long term. According to the Harvard Business Review, 80% of employee turnover is caused by bad hires.  The leading cause of failure for executives and leaders is a poor cultural fit in the organization and personality problems like selfishness and narcissism. Destructive personality traits that could come up with people in leadership roles. Some of the ways that narcissists tend to behave when placed in leadership positions. The benefits of using psychological assessments during the hiring process. Using psychological assessments in combination with the strategies of a recruiting process can add about 40% to your odds of hiring the right person. The assessments that Dr. Chris’ organization has to offer can do a lot more than just screening someone during the hiring process. They can provide essential information that allows for the ongoing development of the individual throughout their life with the organization. These assessments supply valuable information that allow employees to be more effective, productive, and successful in the workplace. The most effective way to use assessments in the hiring process.  Some common mistakes that business owners tend to make with assessments.   Dr. Chris prefers to use a few tools that look at both emotional intelligence and personality. Looking for people's patterns when doing their assessments. The different kinds of pre-hire and post-hire assessment tools.  How personality makes a difference in job performance. Checking the validity of the personality assessment you intend to use. Some of the assessments and tools that Dr. Chris recommends that are normative, EEOC compliant, and should be used pre-hire.  Looking at people's values and what they want to get out of work, to ensure that they will be happy and a good fit for the workplace culture. In this podcast, I chat with Michael Diettrich-Chastain about three things you can do for anxiety. We discussed the importance of having a daily routine that you sustain for a long time in order to get the best results.  The following can be extremely helpful for anxiety that you can implement into your daily routine: Meditation Journaling Some type of movement such as exercise or just a walk in nature Spending more time with people and removing yourself from isolation Taking a break from technology and social media Here are some great articles that teach you how to journal and the health benefits including reducing anxiety and depression: The Health Benefits of Journaling Journaling for Mental Health Additional Resources Recommended by Michael Meditation/mindfulness for the individual and organization  Mind/Body approach to Anxiety  More information on the Muse device  How Should you Implement all of this? You’ll probably create even more anxiety if you put too much on your plate right away, so start slowly and build from there. You may find that you don’t even need to journal, for example, if you are doing well just meditating, taking the occasional nature walk and avoiding social media whenever you can. Set the bar as low as possible so you set yourself up for success rather than failure.  Example, don’t try to meditate, journal and exercise every day right off the bat.  Take just one of these and start small such as meditation for 5 minutes a day.  One nature walk a week is a great start as another example. And as always, any changes in your life shouldn’t add more stress so trust your gut when making these decisions.  You should feel good about implementing any of these recommendations. Enjoy these extremely helpful tips for reducing anxiety and our three things you can do for anxiety interview.
