On February 24th 1986 29 year old Sherri Rasmussen would be found dead in her home by her husband John Ruetten. Sherri would have 3 bullet wounds to her chest as well as a bite in her arm. Police initially ruled it as a home invasion gone wrong. Would that be what happened? Or is it something more sinister? In 1986, Sherri Rasmussen, a young and vibrant nurse, was found murdered in her Los Angeles home under what seemed to be a botched burglary. For decades, the case remained cold, cloaked in unanswered questions and strange inconsistencies. Only years later did DNA evidence unearth a shocking truth: the dirtbag killer was Stephanie Lazarus, a respected LAPD detective with a dark, hidden obsession. In the summer of 1984, John Ruetten met Sherri Rasmussen, and the two immediately hit it off. Their deep bond led to their marriage in November 1985, and they were thrilled to start life as a couple. On February 24, John left for his job at an engineering company, allowing Sherri to sleep in a little longer. Typically, Sherri would have already left for work by this time, but that particular day brought a change in routine. Sherri had contemplated calling in sick because she was slated to attend a seminar and didn't really want to deal with that. John's workday began with his arrival just before 8 a.m. A few hours into his day, he attempted to reach Sherri to check if she had gone to work. He continued trying to get her throughout the day but to no avail. Upon returning home, he noticed that the garage door was unexpectedly open, a departure from the norm, and Sherri's car was gone. As he ventured into the garage, he observed broken glass on the ground. A horrifying scene awaited John inside the residence. 29-year-old Sherri lay on the floor, her face bearing the brutal signs of violence—bloodied, with a swollen and bruised right eyelid, a vacant gaze from her open left eye, and her mouth in its final, silent gasp. In desperation, John reached out to touch her, hoping for a sign of life, but her skin was chillingly cold. At that moment, he knew that Sherri was no longer with them. In the midst of an influx of new information, the DNA report from Jennifer Butterworth in the Sherri Rasmussen case, emerged as a unique and tantalizing clue. The report suggested a potential paradigm shift in the case: the murderer might be a woman. This was an anomaly in violent crimes and stood out from the usual pattern of male perpetrators. However, despite its intriguing nature, the report did not lead directly to a specific suspect. Unlike the plethora of cold hits that were directly pointing towards potential culprits due to Proposition 69, the Rasmussen case remained a mystery. The DNA clue, although significant, was like a lone piece of a complex puzzle, waiting for the other pieces to be found and assembled...Listen to PART II now, and find more of those puzzle pieces.
