In 1986, John Ruetten was leaving his home for work when his wife, Sherri Rasmussen, said that she felt sick and would be staying at home for the day. But upon returning home later in the evening, John would find the garage door open, his wife's car missing, and a huge mess throughout the house. Tragically, he would also find Sherri lifeless on the floor, in what appeared to be a burglary gone wrong. Investigations would investigate this lead in the coming months, citing the crime as part of a spree of burglaries within the area. However, more than 20 years later, a deeper look into the case would support a different theory; one that was closer to the police than they initially thought. Tune in to find out more. On February 24th 1986 29 year old Sherri Rasmussen would be found dead in her home by her husband John Ruetten. Sherri would have 3 bullet wounds to her chest as well as a bite in her arm. Police initially ruled it as a home invasion gone wrong. Would that be what happened? Or is it something more sinister? In the dimming light of February 24, 1986, LAPD detectives stepped through the gates of a condo complex in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, their faces etched with stern concentration. The scene that awaited them was grim. Sherri Rasmussen, a 29-year-old nursing director and a newlywed of just three months, lay dead in her living room. She was found by her husband, John Ruetten, an engineer who had arrived home from work at precisely 5:55 p.m. As Ruetten pulled into his driveway, the first thing that caught his eye was the open garage door. Odd. The silver two-door BMW—a cherished engagement gift he had given to Sherri—was conspicuously missing...CALL 888-MURDERY, that's, 888-687-3379, to share YOUR Kinda Murdery story or your story of living with a disability or other challenges, and you could inspire an episode of the show!Sources: https://allthatsinteresting.com/sherri-rasmussenhttps://www.oxygen.com/the-real-murders-of-los-angeles/crime-news/bite-mark-on-sherri-rasmussen-ties-stephanie-lazarus-tohttps://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/06/the-lazarus-file/308499/ https://www.sportskeeda.com/pop-culture/nbc-dateline-who-sherri-rasmussen-s-killer-nowBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kinda-murdery--5496890/support.

LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus Murder Suspect - Full Length Police Interrogation Video Full Length Police Interrogation Video Sherri Rasmussen (February 7, 1957 – February 24, 1986) was an American woman found dead in February 1986 in an apartment she shared with her husband, John Ruetten, in Van Nuys, California. Rasmussen had been beaten and shot three times in a struggle. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initially considered the case a botched burglary, and the crime remained unsolved. Rasmussen's father believed that Stephanie Lazarus, an LAPD officer, was a prime suspect. Detectives who re-examined the cold case files in 2009 were eventually led to Lazarus, by then herself a detective. A DNA sample she unknowingly discarded was matched to one from a bite on Rasmussen's body that had remained in the files. Lazarus was convicted of the murder in 2012 and is serving a sentence of 27 years to life for first-degree murder at the California Institution for Women in Corona. Lazarus appealed the conviction, claiming that the age of the case and the evidence denied her due process. She also alleged that the search warrant was improperly granted, her statements in an interview prior to her arrest were compelled, and that evidence supporting the original case theory should have been admitted at trial. In 2015, the guilty verdict was upheld by the California Court of Appeal.[5] Some of the police files suggest that evidence that could have implicated Lazarus earlier in the investigation was later removed, perhaps by others in the LAPD. Rasmussen's parents unsuccessfully sued the department over this and other aspects of the investigation. Jennifer Francis, the criminalist who found key evidence from the bite mark, unsuccessfully sued the City of Los Angeles, claiming she was pressured by police to favor certain suspects in this and other high-profile cases and was retaliated against when she brought this to the LAPD's attention. In 1986, Sherri Mae Rasmussen was attacked, beaten and shot to death in her Los Angeles home. Her father, Nels Rasmussen, was convinced Sherri's husband, John Ruetten, was not involved. For more than two decades, Nels tried to get the police to focus on John's ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Lazarus, a decorated Los Angeles police detective. Detectives trailed Lazarus to obtain a DNA sample and the results were stunning: the DNA from Sherri's bite mark and that of Stephanie Lazarus matched. “48 Hours" correspondent Maureen Maher reports. But Sherri's father believed that Ruetten's ex (Stephanie Lazarus), was responsible, but was it really that simple? February 24, 1986 - John Ruetten walks into the apartment he shares with his new wife, Sherri, and finds her beaten and shot to death on the floor...it would take more than 25 years to catch her killer , although some people knew who it was all along...
In the summer of 1984, John Ruetten met Sherri Rasmussen, and the two immediately hit it off. Their deep bond led to their marriage in November 1985, and they were thrilled to start life as a couple. On February 24, John left for his job at an engineering company, allowing Sherri to sleep in a little longer. Typically, Sherri would have already left for work by this time, but that particular day brought a change in routine. Sherri had contemplated calling in sick because she was slated to attend a seminar and didn't really want to deal with that. John's workday began with his arrival just before 8 a.m. A few hours into his day, he attempted to reach Sherri to check if she had gone to work. He continued trying to get her throughout the day but to no avail. Upon returning home, he noticed that the garage door was unexpectedly open, a departure from the norm, and Sherri's car was gone. As he ventured into the garage, he observed broken glass on the ground. A horrifying scene awaited John inside the residence. 29-year-old Sherri lay on the floor, her face bearing the brutal signs of violence—bloodied, with a swollen and bruised right eyelid, a vacant gaze from her open left eye, and her mouth in its final, silent gasp. In desperation, John reached out to touch her, hoping for a sign of life, but her skin was chillingly cold. At that moment, he knew that Sherri was no longer with them. Rasmussen had been beaten and shot three times in a struggle. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initially considered the case a botched burglary, and the crime remained unsolved.Rasmussen's father believed that Stephanie Lazarus, an LAPD officer, was a prime suspect. Detectives who re-examined the cold case files in 2009 were eventually led to Lazarus, by then herself a detective. A DNA sample she unknowingly discarded was matched to one from a bite on Rasmussen's body that had remained in the files. Lazarus was convicted of the murder in 2012 and is serving a sentence of 27 years to life for first-degree murder at the California Institution for Women in Corona.Lazarus appealed the conviction, claiming that the age of the case and the evidence denied her due process. She also alleged that the search warrant was improperly granted, her statements in an interview prior to her arrest were compelled, and that evidence supporting the original case theory should have been admitted at trial. In 2015, the guilty verdict was upheld by the California Court of Appeal.[5]Some of the police files suggest that evidence that could have implicated Lazarus earlier in the investigation was later removed, perhaps by others in the LAPD. Rasmussen's parents unsuccessfully sued the department over this and other aspects of the investigation. Jennifer Francis, the criminalist who found key evidence from the bite mark, unsuccessfully sued the City of Los Angeles, claiming she was pressured by police to favor certain suspects in this and other high-profile cases and was retaliated against when she brought this to the LAPD's attention.True Crime Podcast 2022 - Police Interrogations, 911 Calls and True Police Stories Podcast

On the evening of February 24, 1986, John Ruetten came home to find his wife, Sherri Rasmussen, dead on the living room floor. She had been shot three times and had a noticeable bite mark on her arm. LAPD investigators ruled in a burglary gone wrong. Due to the rising gang violence and crack epidemic in Los Angeles, the case went cold. In 2004, evidence that had gone missing was recovered. It was a cotton swab that contained the DNA of a possible suspect that was taken from the bite mark on Sherri's arm. The case continued to sit until 2009, hen it was reopened by police. The DNA was linked to a well respect, veteran LAPD detective named Stephanie Lazarus. Prior to John's marriage to Sherri, he had an intimate relationship with Stephanie. He only saw her as a hook up but she was in love with him. Stephanie became jealous of Sherri, eventually stalking her. While working as an LAPD officer, she killed Sherri and staged the scene to look like a burglary. Stephanie was charged with first degree murder and was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison. At this time, she has exhausted all her appeals

John Ruetten was absolutely in love with his new bride, Sherri Rasmussen. She was the total package: beautiful, fun to be with, and very smart. At 29, she was already the director of nursing at the hospital she worked at in Van Nuys, California, and she even lectured internationally on critical care nursing. But it all came to a sudden end when John arrived at their townhome just a few months after they'd gotten married to find her dead on the living room floor. He had no idea who could have done this, and told detectives neither of them had any enemies, anyone that would have wanted to hurt them. But Sherri's father, Nels, disagreed. Detectives were certain that this had been a burglary gone wrong, and as they explained that to Nels, he asked them: "Have you checked out John's ex-girlfriend? The lady cop?" John's ex was a police officer named Stephanie Lazarus, and according to Nels, she'd had plenty of run-ins with Sherri that made Nels uneasy. But no one was listening to him. Stephanie Ilene Lazarus is a former Los Angeles police detective who was convicted in March 2012 of the 1986 first-degree murder of her ex-boyfriend's new wife, Sherri Rasmussen. Lazarus is serving a 27-year to life sentence for the offense at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, California. Her case made national headlines. On February 24, 1986, Sherri Rasmussen, a critical care nurse was living in a condominium with her new husband, and Stephanie Lazarus' ex-boyfriend, John Ruetten. That night, Ruetten found his new wife beaten to death, and shot numerous times with a .38 caliber revolver. The crime was initially deemed to be a robbery gone awry, as Rasmussen's BMW was stolen. The initial suspects were two Latino men who were believed to have committed other burglaries in Rasmussen's neighborhood. Lazarus was also a suspect in the initial investigation, but was later cleared. Rasmussen's family still believed Lazarus was involved, as they had both dated Ruetten and Lazarus had once showed up at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center where Rasmussen worked and threatened her, supposedly stating: "If I can't have John, then nobody else will." In the meantime, Lazarus continued working with the Los Angeles Police Department; she went on to start her own private investigation firm, Unique Investigations.Twenty-three years after the murder of Sherri Rasmussen, the case was still unsolved. In February 2009, however, a cold case detective squad decided to re-investigate the case. Investigators discovered female DNA from a bite mark on Rasmussen's body, and Stephanie Lazarus became the prime suspect. After the detectives were able to match Lazarus' DNA with the DNA found on Rasmussen's body, Lazarus was arrested for the murder on June 5, 2009. She was then allowed to retire early from the LAPD; she was held in the Los Angeles County Jail with a $10 million bail.Stephanie Lazarus' murder trial began in early 2012. Prosecutors believed Lazarus' motive for the murder was jealousy over Sherri Rasmussen's relationship with her ex-boyfriend, John Ruetten. The prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Shannon Presby stated, "A bite, a bullet, a gun barrel and a broken heart. That's the evidence that will prove to you that defendant Stephanie Lazarus murdered Sherri Rasmussen.Lazarus' attorney, Mark Overland, argued that the investigation into Rasmussen's death was botched from the beginning, and the evidence collected did not point to Lazarus as Rasmussen's killer. On March 8, 2012, Lazarus was convicted of Rasmussen's murder in the first-degree. She was later sentenced in May 2012 to 27 years to life in prison, and she is currently serving her sentence at the Central California Women's Facility. She will be eligible for parole in 2039.Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. To help support the show, find us on Patreon: patreon.com HWW is now on Discord: https://discord.gg/F9cMyf7JFJTo our amazing listeners. This week, we remember Sherri Rasmussen. Sherri Rasmussen was an American nurse who was found brutally murdered on February 24, 1986 in the apartment she shared with her husband, John Ruetten, in Van Nuys, CA. Sherri's murder remained unsolved for 23 years following her death, despite a number of frustrating clues and tips provided by her family and friends. Advances in DNA technology would lead us to Sherri's killer, but we are left to wonder what would have happened if Sherri's case did not, at least for a period of time, meet the same fate as thousands of unsolved murder cases that were just chalked up to gang activity.
John Ruetten e Sherri Rasmussen tinham 3 meses de casados quando John encontrou a esposa morta na sala de casa. A polícia de Los Angeles levou mais de 23 anos pra descobrir o que realmente aconteceu com ela.
On February 24, 1986, the body of Sherri Rasmussen was found in the apartment she shared with her husband, John Ruetten, in Van Nuys, California. She had been badly beaten and shot three times in the chest from a home invasion. The Los Angeles Police Department initially considered the home invasion a botched burglary. But with the new advanced technology of DNA would change that theory to murder. After 23 years this cold case would be solved on June 5, 2009 and a murderer would get the justice, she deserves 27 years to life in prison.
In 1986, newlyweds Sherri and John Ruetten were enjoying their lives together in their Van Nuys, California condo. Sherri met John at a party after they had both graduated college and the pair were set on course to cultivate a token "American Dream" life. That was, until the casual ex-girlfriend of John couldn't shake her jealousy over what could've been, and Sherri Rasmussen paid the ultimate price. On February 24, 1986, John Ruetten came home from work to the condominium in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles that he shared with his bride of three months, Sherri Rasmussen. What he found inside the condo changed his life forever – and it also changed a lot of people's perception of the Los Angeles Police Department. On the living room floor, still wearing the robe and underwear she had worn to bed the previous night, was the body of Sherri – her face beaten beyond all recognition, and the three bullets that finally ended her life. Little did John know then that it would take 23 years and a determined, unafraid LAPD detective to both solve the murder and expose a rotten corner of the department's inner culture. It turns out that for several years Sherri Rasmussen had been stalked and terrorized by one of LAPD's young superstars – then still a uniformed officer named Stephanie Lazarus. Lazarus had been friends with Ruetten when they first met in college and the two had been occasional sexual partners for a while after school ended. Problem was, Stephanie Lazarus was crazy in love with John and thought he belonged to her – and John had no such feelings for Stephanie. Instead, John fell in love with Sherri Rasmussen. And when Stephanie learned that John and Sherri were engaged, Stephanie lost it – and began stalking and threatening Sherri at home and at work. Unfortunately, Sherri and John never reported these events to the police – the only people who knew other than themselves were Sherri's parents. So it was only natural for Sherri's father, Nels, reported the stalking incidents and that his strong feeling was that Stephanie Lazarus had to be a prime suspect. To which the police promptly ignored any suggestion that Lazarus could have anything to do with the murder. And refused to even explore the possibility even when all other suspects were cleared. And this went on for over two decades, until a couple of reform-oriented new police Chiefs for LAPD, over the period of several years, a mysterious (and still unknown) whistle blower and a dedicated detective who would not cover up any misdoings finally put all the pieces together and finally put Stephanie on trial – and eventually behind bars for 20-to-Life. Join Melissa on her 200th episode as she retells this sad but enlightening story of jealous homicide, possible police cover-up and, ultimately, the strength of the family of a murder victim who would not sit down or shut up, but kept Sherri Rasmussen's flame burning brightly.

On February 24, 1986, John Ruetten came home to his Van Nuys apartment to discover that his wife, Sherri Rasmussen had been beaten and murdered. The Los Angeles Police Department was quick to call it a burglary gone wrong, with no suspects ever being brought to justice. The case went cold, with evidence waiting on technology to catch up. For over two decades, friends and family of Sherri would hold steadfast to the belief that there was something much more sinister to be found than a robbery. In 2009, new detectives with fresh eyes would be assigned the file, and would shock the state of California as evidence would lead them no further than their own front door. In 1986, Stephanie Lazarus was an LAPD officer who murdered her ex-boyfriend's wife, Sherri Rasmussen. Lazarus was still infatuated with her ex, John Ruetten, and decided to execute the woman she thought was her romantic rival. She used her police training to make the murder look like a robbery. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the murder of Sherri Rasmussen committed by Stephanie Lazarus. From the start, police were stuck on the theory that Sherri was killed by one or multiple burglars. Many people have said this caused them to not interview key witnesses or even take a hard look at John's ex-girlfriend. It took cold case investigators, over 20 years later, to put the pieces of the puzzle together. And when they did all signs pointed to Stephanie Lazarus. But, they had to tread carefully to take down one of their own.You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationAn Emash Digital production
It may be two months before Valentine’s Day comes around again, but we’ve got an old-fashioned Lover’s Triangle on this week’s episode. John Ruetten and Stephanie Lazarus lived in the same dorm building during their years at UCLA. Eventually, that friendship wound up adding some “benefits.” Apparently, Stephanie thought those benefits were something more permanent, and when John married Sherri Rasmussen, it didn’t end well. Before we explore that story, This Week In Murder explores a confession in the case of a Russian serial killer and a tragic suicide seen by the last people who should have saw it.
