When Kate-Lynn Clark got the opportunity to take over a peony farm, it didn't include the land. So she dug up and moved over 250 varieties of peonies to her family's farm in Brownsburg-Chatham, Quebec. There she runs En Fleurs, shipping peony roots to Canada and the USA, so we figured she could tell us everything about planting and maintaining peonies! We cover the difference between tree peonies and herbaceous peonies, why they need a certain amount of chilling for good blooming, and why intersectional peonies may be a more reliable option for southern growers. We also learn how often to dig, divide and replant peonies, and why this usually happens in the fall. We also talk about why single peonies are mostly for event work, but doubles are better for cuts, good varieties for cut flowers, and best practices for harvest and postharvest handling. This week on The Dirt on Flowers, Shannon and Lyndsay catch up on what's thriving, what's struggling, and the crops they're loving most this season. From surprisingly gorgeous tunnel-grown Bells of Ireland to statice, snaps, and all-time favorite cool flowers, they share the varieties earning permanent spots on the farm. They also get honest about disappointing peony seasons, overwintering losses, tunnel fatigue, and the reality that perennial crops still need plenty of attention and care. The conversation dives into soil health, irrigation, plasticulture, crop rotation, and the mental side of flower farming after years of unpredictable weather. Plus, they talk wedding workshop details, favorite fall-planted flowers, USPS disasters, and the flowers they'd happily never grow again.Lyndsays wedding workshopBe in the know for DirtCon 2027If you want to dive in deeper with us each month, join our membership group - The Dirt on Flowers Insiders! What if you could walk through acres of blooming peonies and cut your own bouquet to take home? In this episode, Joanne welcomes Valérie Chort of Fleur de Roy to share the story behind Southern Ontario's largest pick-your-own peony farm and its short but spectacular bloom season. Tickets are now available to Pick Your Own Peony Flowers from June 1st to 8th, 2026. In this episode: How did a conservation property become a pick-your-own peony farm? Valérie shares the story behind Fleur de Roy, a Southern Ontario peony farm located on a 150-acre property near Lake St. Clair, where conservation, family, and a love of flowers came together in a surprising way. What does it take to grow thousands of peonies for one short, spectacular season? Joanne and Valérie discuss the patience, planning, timing, and care behind growing peonies, including why these plants take years to establish and why the bloom window is so weather-dependent. Why is Fleur de Roy's Peony Bloom Festival becoming a must-visit local experience? Valérie explains how the farm has shifted from wholesale flower production to welcoming visitors for a pick-your-own peony experience, with confirmed 2025 opening dates from June 1 to June 8, with the possibility of extending on either side depending on the bloom season. Visit them online at www.fleurderoy.com or on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. Tickets are now available. Purchase them here. Have a topic you'd like Joanne to discuss? Flamboyant, sophisticated, blousy and beautiful - the peony tops the favorites chart of so many gardeners (and non-gardeners), that we had to devote a spring episode to them. They are delicate, but tough, and can live for up to a century -– so it makes sense to figure out what you want and where you want it before you plant one. We've got a surprise for you this week – Sabrina is back! She and Sonia T. are taking full control of the mic while Sonia C. is teaching, and they are tackling the barking dogs. We've all had seasons when the barking dogs are really revved up, but when your expectations of yourself and others start to spin out of control, it's time for you to take charge and calm down. This week's theme is: You – not your barking dog – are in control of you! Reserve your seat at the Speed Dial Your Guidance Experience today! Highlights: Welcome back to the podcast, Sabrina! [:30] Eclipse season is wrapping up, and our shadows are ready to rest. [2:02] Quieting the inner critic. [9:34] Check your expectations – of yourself and others! [11:50] You get to turn the awareness dial up or down. [17:30] Meet Pete and Peony! What is your barking dog's name? [19:40] You get to choose what news you consume. [25:05] Who tells you that you're too much? [30:00] Tool of the Week: Embrace your inner child, but don't let her drive the bus. [39:10] Question of the Week: Are birds really my spirit guides? [42:54] Eclipse season is wrapping up, and our spirits are rejoicing! Something about the shadows that come out during eclipse season can leave us feeling unsettled about our lives and unsure about our relationships, but it doesn't have to be that way! Being intuitive sometimes means knowing others' needs even before they do, but that awareness dial doesn't always need to be turned up to full volume. You can choose to quiet the dial, and you just may preserve your happy relationships in the process! Today on the podcast, we also welcome Pete and Peony, the barking dogs! Your ego intellect can be named and can be put to good use in service to your spirit. But when you let the dog drive the bus, it gets really loud, really quickly! When your barking dog gets critical and starts thinking in black and white and just knows it's right about everything, it's time to name it to tame it. Remember, you are in control here, not your barking dog. Tool of the Week: Embrace your inner child, but don't let her drive the bus. [39:10] Question of the Week: Are birds really my spirit guides?
