Are We Raising Picky Eaters? Most parents today assume picky eating is just part of childhood. But what if it's not? In this fascinating conversation, Helen Zoe Veit joins Hunter Clarke-Fields to explore the surprising history of children's eating habits—and how modern parenting norms may be creating more picky eaters, not fewer. You'll discover why kids in the 19th century ate a wide variety of foods, how the concept of “kid food” was invented, and the unexpected ways well-meaning advice from the past continues to shape how we feed our children today. If you've ever struggled with mealtime battles, short-order cooking, or worry about your child's limited diet, this episode will completely shift your perspective—and offer a more grounded, confident way forward. What You'll Learn Why picky eating may be more cultural than biological What children really ate in the 1800s (and why it matters) How “kid food” and marketing changed children's diets The hidden impact of 1940s parenting advice on feeding kids Why accommodating picky eating can backfire How to help kids develop a broader palate—without pressure or power struggles ABOUT HUNTER CLARKE-FIELDS: Hunter Clarke-Fields is the host Mindful Parenting Podcast (Top 0.5% podcast ), global speaker, number 1 bestselling author of “Raising Good Humans” and “Raising Good Humans Every Day,” Mindfulness Meditation teacher and creator of the Mindful Parenting Course and Teacher Training. For generations, parents have been told that picky eating is normal, inevitable, and just part of raising kids. But what if that's not true? What if picky eating is actually a modern phenomenon—and one we've unintentionally created? In this episode, Nicole sits down with historian, professor, and author Helen Zoe Veit to explore the surprising history behind children's eating habits. Drawing from her book Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History, Helen reveals how kids once ate everything from bitter greens to spicy foods and why modern parenting, nutrition advice, convenience foods, and fear-based messaging may have changed that. Together, they unpack what parents can learn from history, how to build curiosity around food, and why confidence—not control—may be the missing ingredient at the dinner table. In This Episode We Discuss: Why picky eating is a relatively recent phenomenon in American history How children in the 19th century developed adventurous palates The role of nutrition science in changing children's diets Why modern parents feel so much pressure around food and feeding The difference between food neophobia and true picky eating How repeated exposure helps children learn to enjoy new foods Why separate "kids' meals" may be contributing to the problem The impact of snacks, convenience foods, and ultra-processed foods How confidence and consistency can transform family mealtimes The connection between food, curiosity, joy, and lifelong health This conversation is a powerful reminder that children may be capable of far more than we give them credit for—and that curiosity, resilience, and openness can all be nurtured one bite at a time.
37:50 A megosztott felelősség modellje. Nemcsak a szülő a felelős, a gyerek is. Their ordination to the permanent diaconate in the Diocese of Crookston
Are children naturally picky? It sure seems that way. Yet, amazingly, pickiness used to be almost nonexistent. Well into the 20th century, Americans saw children as joyful omnivores who were naturally curious and eager to eat. Of course, this doesn't make sense today. Don't kids have special taste buds? Aren't they highly sensitive to food's texture and color? Aren't children incapable of liking “adult foods,” and don't parents risk harming kids psychologically by urging them to eat?But Americans in the past didn't think any of those things. They assumed that children could enjoy the same foods as adults, and children almost always did. They loved spicy relishes, vinegary pickles, and bitter greens. They spent their allowances on raw oysters and looked forward to their daily coffee. So how did modern kids become such incredibly narrow eaters? The story is fascinating – and about much more than rising abundance. Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History (St Martin's Press, 2026) by Dr. Helen Veit shows how fussy eating came to define "children's food" and reshape American diets at large. Maybe most importantly, it explains how we can still use the tools that parents used in the past to raise happy, healthy, wildly un-picky kids today. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Flooring trends may come and go, but durability, longevity and resale value continue to drive homeowner decisions across metro Atlanta. Alex Veit, owner of Oakerds Hardwood Floor Refinishing, joins Host Carol Morgan on Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio to discuss best practices for refinishing and installing floors in your home. From historic bungalows with hidden hardwoods to modern homes filled with luxury vinyl plank (LVP), Veit has seen firsthand which materials hold up over time and which ones homeowners often regret installing. Why More Atlanta Homeowners Are Choosing LVP Over Laminate As waterproof flooring products continue gaining popularity, many homeowners still misunderstand the difference between laminate and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring. The products often carry similar price points, but their long-term performance can vary significantly, especially in moisture-prone spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms. “They're priced the same, but LVP is truly a waterproof product, where laminate is a water-resistant product at best,” he said. After years of replacing swollen laminate flooring damaged by moisture exposure, Veit now steers homeowners toward higher-quality LVP products instead. However, not all vinyl plank flooring performs equally. Thin, lower-cost products often fail at the locking system, particularly in high-traffic areas. Oakerds avoids installing LVP products thinner than five millimeters due to durability concerns and product recalls. Hardwood Flooring Continues To Set the Standard Hardwood flooring remains one of the most durable and desirable flooring materials in the Atlanta market, and natural white oak floors with simple finishes continue to outperform short-lived design trends years after installation. Hardwood's long-term value comes not only from its appearance but also from its ability to be restored rather than replaced. It can often be refinished multiple times throughout its lifespan, making hardwood flooring a strong long-term investment. “You could get four to five refinishes out of a floor, and that could span over 100 years,” Veit said. While hardwood may scratch more easily than LVP in daily life, refinishing gives homeowners the ability to restore floors instead of fully replacing them after damage occurs. Hardwood vs. LVP For homeowners weighing hardwood against LVP, the right choice often depends on budget, lifestyle and long-term goals for the home. Homeowners looking for longevity and timeless appeal may find hardwood flooring to be the better option. While hardwood typically requires a larger upfront investment, the material can last for generations when properly maintained. “It's been around for over 100 years, and it's going to be around for 100 more,” he said. LVP continues gaining market share because of its versatility and strong day-to-day durability, and it remains especially popular in new construction, rental properties and renovation projects across a wide range of price points. For families with children and pets, LVP often performs better against scratches and general wear in the short term. However, once damaged, replacement becomes the only solution. Refinishing Hardwood Floors: A Smart Investment One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is replacing hardwood floors that could have been refinished instead. In many cases, refinishing offers a more affordable solution while preserving the original character of the home. Certain conditions, however, may justify replacement: Severe structural damage Major water intrusion Engineered hardwood products with veneers too thin to refinish safely Flooring Plays a Major Role in Resale Value Flooring can directly influence how buyers perceive a home during showings. Clean, updated flooring can immediately improve the presentation of a property, while damaged or outdated flooring may raise concerns about maintenance throughout the rest of the house. “Flooring is probably the first thing people see when they walk into the house,” Veit said. Oakerds Launches Online Flooring Calculator To simplify the pricing process, Oakerds recently launched an online flooring calculator that helps homeowners, agents and investors estimate project costs before scheduling consultations. Veit created the tool to give consumers faster access to pricing information while helping real estate professionals make quicker renovation decisions during transactions. The calculator allows users to estimate refinishing, replacement and installation costs in about one minute. Users can also submit their information directly through the platform to request follow-up consultations and verified project estimates. Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History By: Helen Zoe Veit Published: 2026 304 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? Stop me if you've heard this one… Up until the beginning of the 20th century we never ever did this one thing, and then starting in the 20th century attitudes and culture gradually changed until now, this very new thing, that basically never existed historically, is accepted as a fact of life. For this go-around it's children being picky about food. The whole concept only began to emerge in the 1930s and back then it was just used to identify something that needed to be corrected. Like lying, swearing, or truancy, it wasn't until after World War II that the modern "something we have to work around" usage started to solidify. This book is the story of why things changed and what we can do to reverse that change. What authorial biases should I be aware of? This is not a disinterested academic overview of things. Veit thinks that pickiness is a bad thing, that it's tied to consumption of "junk food", obesity, and a general culture of overconsuming food. The 19th-century child eating raw oysters and organ meats could be considered the hero of the story, the entire edifice of modern food dysfunction is the dragon, and the 21st-century child who eats nothing but hyperpalatable, low-nutrition snacks, and then is too full for normal meals is the princess in need of saving. Who should read this book? I think people who have picky kids and worry about whether that's a problem would definitely benefit from reading this book. I enjoyed it because I'm always fascinated by the strange transitions of modernity. Should you fall into that bucket you'll probably enjoy it as well. What does the book have to say about the future?

We've all seen the child who eats three foods on repeat, refuses anything green, and can't abide by food touching other food. But social historian Dr. Helen Zoe Veit says picky eating isn't some timeless childhood phase, and it's not simply hardwired biology. She argues it's something modern culture helped create, driven by a century of shifting family life, anxious parenting advice, and a food industry built around ultra-processed convenience. And that's the good news. Veit says if pickiness is shaped by the world kids grow up in, it's not permanent. With the right approach, children can learn to eat differently. Her new book is Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Apology: Helen Veit's audio has a lot of “ducking”, in which a word or multiple words were clipped. This happened during the recording, and cannot be fixed in the audio edit. We'll work hard to make sure this never happens again. In nineteenth-century America, cookbook authors, concerned doctors, and food reformers believed that children had a problem with food. Children, reformers worried, would “eat anything and everything.” If they were to grow into healthy adults, they needed a special diet—“children's food”—which meant that for the first time in human history children would have to eat differently from everyone else. That moment was one step along a path that my guest Helen Zoe Veit traces in her new book Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History. Beginning in a mid-nineteenth century world in which children routinely ate oysters, organ meats, sauerkraut, and richly spiced dishes alongside adults, she carries the story forward to our own moment—an era of childhood obesity, nutritional anxiety, supermarket abundance, and the widespread assumption that children are “food rejectors by nature.” But as Veit argues, mass childhood pickiness is not deeply biological. It is overwhelmingly cultural. And culture, unlike biology, can change.Helen Zoe Veit is Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University. She specializes in American food history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is the author and editor of numerous works on food, morality, and culture. Picky is her latest book.Chapters0:00 - Introduction 3:02 - 19th Century Children Ate Everything 5:30 - Mark Twain and Edith Wharton's Childhoods 14:02 - Why Doctors Were Concerned 24:20 - The First Signs of Pickiness in the 1930s 33:18 - Benjamin Spock and Clara Davis 45:51 - The Supermarket Revolution 52:16 - Parental Guilt and Contradictory Advice 1:00:15 - Solutions and Hope for Change 1:07:59 - Why Food History Matters
Is your kid a fussy eater? A lot of us have come to accept that there's a period where children can only stomach dino nuggets, buttered noodles and PB&J's. But American kids used to be “fabulous” eaters, writes historian Helen Zoe Veit. They ate “spicy relishes, vinegary pickles… raw oysters and looked forward to their daily coffee.” We talk to Veit about what happened, and what we can learn from the past to expand kids' palates — and help parents feel less overwhelmed at dinner time. Veit's new book is “Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History.” Guests: Helen Zoe Veit, associate professor of history, Michigan State University; author, "Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History" Dr. Erik Fernandez y Garcia, pediatrician and professor of pediatrics, UC Davis Learn more about your ad choices.
