This episode takes us back to Kodiak Island, Alaska, where Austin Brown and several of his friends hunt Sitka Blacktail deer, predators, and sea ducks. It's all DIY, and it's the first time in Alaska for several of these hunters. Host and transporter is our long-time favorite: Alaska Premier Sportfishing's good boat Venturess and her captain Travis Larson and crew. I asked Austin to run with an audio-journal type record of their adventures. He did a fine job, and the result is this episode. It's all about discovering new adventures in new places, and how real the struggle is on Kodiak Island! ENJOY! — JvB FRIENDS! In August 2023, Ryan Lampers, his daughter Pailey, Dalton, his wife Tabitha, and Chaim Lloyd pursued alpine Sitka Blacktail deer. This episode steps behind the camera and explores details of the terrain, tactics, gear, and lessons learned from this hunt.

It's the whole Gunwerks hunting party on a boat, in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Kodiak Island. The guys provide an update on the adventure thus far; there has been epic fishing, a harrowing bear encounter, and sitka blacktail shot mid-sandwich. Austin Atkinson of Huntin' Fool joined them on this hunt and provides a lot of good information from his experiences in Alaska. The hunting's been good and the stories are fresh on this episode of Long Range Pursuit Podcast!
Landon, Neal, Avery, and Josh discuss how they've each prepared for their upcoming sitka blacktail deer hunt on Kodiak Island. In this replay from 2019, I talk about approaching muskegs quietly, using creeks as cover and expecting deer bedded in the transition. On this hunt, I was moving slow enough that I saw a deer bedded in brush well before the edge of a muskeg. He bumped, but I didn't rush after him. I gave a few quiet calls after a few minutes, then slowly moved toward the muskeg. He had only bumped to the edge of the muskeg. It was a quick and easy shot. Then as I waited for my buddies, a boat came in and dropped off a hunter in the same cove where we were anchored. Madness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In part 2 of how to hunt Sitka blacktail deer in Southeast Alaska, I replay one of my earliest episodes. The guys behind Drop Shot Calls invited me over to talk hunting, calling and all things Prince of Wales living. The recording is done at their bench as they are working on their calls so there is authentic background noise and examples of how they call to bring in the big bucks they are known for. In part 1 of how to hunt Sitka blacktail deer in Southeast Alaska, I go back to episode 117 for a discussion with my buddy Ryan John. We talk scouting muskegs, what Google Earth can't show you, the importance of hunting the entire way to the muskeg not just the muskeg itself, how long to stay, being quiet, and when to eat snacks. Hot off the heels of the premiere of our new limited-series, KODIAK, we caught up with Alaskan guide & owner of Adventure Mountain Hunts, Cole Kramer. Since 2002, Cole has cut his teeth in the wilderness of Alaska guiding hunters for deer, moose, sheep, caribou, & grizzly bears. On this episode, he sheds light on the life of an Alaskan guide and never-before-heard details about last years Sitka Blacktail hunt with Mike, Tim, and Brian Call as seen in the limited-series KODIAK. Subjects Discussed: Cole's tot commercial; how to get into guiding; surviving tsunami threats; being a good hunting client; the allure of Kodiak; Cole's favorites and more.
Sitka Blacktailed Deer are not as well known as some of the other species of deer, but they are just as magnificent. They are native to the dense rainforests of Southeast Alaska and Northern BC. I was first introduced to them when I spent time on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. After some research I heard about Jim Baichtal. Jim has spent a lot of years pursuing these magnificent deer as a hunter but he has also been involved in researching them as a scientist. Very few people know more about Sitka Blacktailed Deer than Jim. He shares some of that knowledge with us on this podcast.

On today's episode we talk about hunting Kodiak Island for Sitka Blacktail Deer. Heath Segeberg hunted Kodiak Island for the the first time this year and did well. Many of us have wanted to do this hunt so I was excited to hear his stories. We also compare Kodiak to Prince of Wales Island, which I am very familiar. We talk about logistics of getting to the island. We talk about how they used a transporter to get around the island. Taking advantage of the rugged public land that has little access.
Episode number 4 we're talking Alaska. We were able to have our buddy Mikey in to talk about growing up in Alaska. Many of us dream of pulling off an Alaskan hunting trip. This week, we talk with our friend Dwayne Spiess from New York about his advice and experience with hunting Sitka Blacktail Deer on Kodiak, Afognak, and Raspberry Islands. This is a challenging, exciting and affordable Alaskan hunt which is comparable in price to a guided mid-western whitetail trip. Dwayne breaks down his trip and offers some practical and useful advice for hunting strategies, gear and getting your meat home. Dwayne and his partner were on Afognak Island just a couple of weeks after the Meateater Crew's epic bear tree incident last fall. Did Dwayne and his partner encounter a bear? On this episode I sit down with Shannon Mobbs and Cory Ford of Angry Spike Productions to talk about their recent Sitka Blacktail hunt in SE Alaska. This was a true DIY adventure hunt, on public land with over the counter tags. They picked a remote island in Tongass National Forest and tackled the Alaskan wilderness head on. They worked through a few obstacles of course. Things like steep mountains, rugged terrain, biting bugs, and one lost quiver of arrows. But I'll let them tell the story…… Enjoy the podcast.
On this episode we speak to Sam Sawyer about Sitka Blacktail Deer on Prince of Wales Island, in Alaska. We talk about the techniques he uses to break down the landscape so he can focus his time targeting mature bucks during the rut. Prince of Wales Island is part of Tongass National Forest so most of the island is public land. We talk primarily about rifle hunting but archery hunting is an option for the avid hunter. With a little research and some work on the ground anyone can go there and have a successful hunt for this unique species of deer. https://youtu.be/-ASzXVGsMtI
