We talk about this 80's classic. These are some crazy robots.
...You're a WINNER! Today, Matt, Todd, and Mike dive into 1986's animated Sci-Fi action slugfest: Transformers: The Movie, directed by Nelson Shin, and featuring an all-star voice cast: Orson Welles as Unicron Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron Judd Nelson as Rodimus Prime Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus And of course... Frank Welker as Megatron & Soundwave Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime & Ironhide Written by Ron Friedman, this movie brought us many unforgettable moments. If you know & love the movie, you already know where this is going. Talk to the right person, and mentioning this movie might just bring back some deep childhood trauma. If you don't know it yet, you're about to delve into one of the most effective and disturbing 'war films' an '80s child could watch—something akin to "We Were Soldiers" but, you know, with toys, set to some of the most rocking '80s glam you'll ever hear. We're talking about a bunch of toy-heroes getting systematically slaughtered, genocided, tortured, and dipped in acid... So grab your nearest action figure and jump in for a fantastic, fun-filled ride of family adventure. Transformers: The Movie is far more 'adult' than one would ever have expected, and the impactful death of some of the biggest stars is remembered forever. Many recall tearful theaters and leaving in shock. Maybe you were never a fan, and maybe the Michael Bay movies didn't help. But this is different—more akin to "Heavy Metal" than a Saturday afternoon with some trucks and lasers. Check this classic out! America doesn't make too many animated films quite like this, so it's no surprise that the Transformers' origins lie thousands of miles away in Japan. Till all are one... and as always, thank you for listening. Matt rolls out his favorites on Letterboxd and BlueSky @MovieMattSirois. Witness Matt dispense Quintesson justice on the black fog of despair that is $1-budget action nonsense at the Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful. Happy New Year and Ba weep granah weep nini bong to you all! Transformers started out as a toy line, and became a comic and a TV series, and it was making huge profits for parent company Hasbro, but what do you do when you want to introduce a whole new toy line and get rid of the old ones? Why, you make a feature length animation to kill off the ones you don't want anymore. It'll be easy, right?Well, turns out Hasbro ignored the advice of seasoned writer Ron Friedman, who insisted killing Optimus Prime would be a terrible idea. Hasbro went ahead and massacred not only Optimus, but other fan favourite characters, just to get kids to want new toys. While this decision is seen as one of the worst ideas in Transformers history, it arguably made The Transformers: The Movie into more than meets the eye, and while the move failed at the box office, its legacy in animation history would be preserved as an emotionally impactful story for millions of fans, and is now a beloved cult classic.I would love to hear your thoughts on (From the Archive) The Transfomers: The Movie (1986) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! LAST WEEK, PART 2: This week, our hosts return to what they rambled about last week. After watching the Netflix show, Heartstopper, Andrew checked out the original comics and was surprised at how closely the show sticks to them. D. Bethel checks out episodes 2 and 3 of Adult Swim's Uzumaki and develops theories as to the significant shifts in animation quality throughout the episode. Then, Andrew returns to talk about something new: the Backerkit campaign for the classic tabletop RPG, Ars Magica, and how it's promising to release this new edition in the Creative Commons. THE TOUCH: D. Bethel also briefly discusses Transformers One, the newest fully animated Transformers movie since 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. Your Popzara Pals celebrate 40 years of Autobots and Decepticons waging war across the galaxy - and our imaginations - as our own Cybertronian warriors Nate Evans, Chris Mitchell, and editor-in-disguise Sebastian Stoddard assemble in epic cybernetic roundtable chat about two animated features that perfectly everything we love about Optimus Prime, Megatron, and the rest: 1986's Transformers: The Movie and 2024's Transformers One. Listen as the gang discusses how Hasbro and Marvel were able to (literally) transform a product designed to sell toys to children into one of the most beloved and resilient franchises in history - and how it took veterans from Pixar to restore luster to a premise that was starting to feel a little rusty. Listen further as they explore how Transformers has upended expectations for decades, how a generation of latchkey kids came to accept death and loss, Orson Welles' journey from Rosebud to Unicron, what the Michael Bay films got right, how Chris Hemswoth honors Peter Cullen, possibly the most quintessentially 1980s soundtrack ever, the surprising connections between Transformers and Sylvester Stallone, the genius of AOR King (and Popzara fan) Stan Bush, and more. It's an episode beyond good, beyond evil, and beyond your wildest imagination.

Good transforming robots wage war against evil transforming robots, as well as a more evil, giant transforming robot. Special guest Clinton Festa returns to discuss conspiracy theories about Optimus Prime's death, gender in robot-based fiction, and the forgotten Dinobot. There's more than meets the eye as we find out if The Transformers: The Movie stands the Test of Time.
How do you solve an engineering problem like the Transformers? This might be one of the most iconic franchises of the 1980s, but it might also be as scientifically implausible as say, the Power Sword from another beloved ‘80s property, Masters of the Universe. Or…is it? After all, there's already technology out there that can autonomously transform and combine, so is it really that much of a leap to think that an autonomous robot might also be able to disguise itself as a self-driving car? The answer might surprise you!You know what else might surprise you? Hakeem's apparent phobia of getting squished by giant robots. If a scientist is this worried about something like that, maybe we should be, too! Dive into these concepts and questions as well as the most reasonable, thoughtful unpacking of Transformers basic story logic you'll ever find. Roll out! No, wait, stay right here to watch or check it out on our YouTube page!SUGGESTED VIEWING The Transformers franchise is vast. And we do mean vast. Multiple animated series spanning dozens of seasons and hundreds upon hundreds of episodes plus almost a dozen movies both animated and live action. Oh, and then there are the hundreds of comic books, with at least three distinct continuities. And that doesn't even take into account the lore and character info that was included with the toys themselves. But don't worry, flight cadets, we're making this easy on you.For this episode, Hakeem and Tamara dealt with the following pieces of the franchise to really focus their discussion. They are…The Transformers S1 Episodes 1-3 “More Than Meets the Eye”The first three episodes of the original Transformers animated series pretty much tells you what you need to know about the Autobots and Decepticons and gives you a reasonable understanding of how they function. This is the cartoon that really started it all, and features the most iconic, recognizable versions of the characters. The Transformers: The Movie (1986)The first animated big screen Transformers adventure serves as a bridge between seasons one and two of the animated series and also scarred a generation of elementary school age Gen-X-ers. But it enriches the lore of the franchise and also gives a sense of what “death” is like for these characters, so we figured it makes sense as a bookend to those first three episodes.Transformers (2007)Michael Bay's first live action Transformers movie serves as a fresh start for the franchise, features its own take on the lore, and was instrumental in helping our hosts wrap their heads around the physics and engineering of transformation. It kicked off a massive blockbuster franchise which…you can mostly avoid. However, if you want to go a little further in your viewing, 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon is worth your time for some truly mind-blowing visuals, and 2018's soft reboot Bumblebee is one of the best pieces of Transformers media out there. There's also a brand new animated prequel, Transformers One, in theaters now, but we hadn't seen that at the time this episode was being produced. Unfortunately, we don't have the footage of Hakeem in the “vomit comet” for you to watch. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Self-Assembling Modular RobotsThey might not look like much, but these self-assembling modular robot cubes might be a precursor to Transformer-like technology in the real world down the line. While Hakeem isn't fully on board with the Transformers as we know them in pop culture, he sees the potential in these little weirdos.Multi-Modal Mobility Morphobot (M4)OK, so…THIS one might be a little bit more in line with what you expect from the Transformers. For those of you who want a more in-depth look at what makes this one tick, you can read the scientific paper here. But really, it needs to be seen to be believed!Liquid RobotsOne way to get around the engineering problem that comes with the sheer scale of the Transformers is by making them REALLY small. Or in this case, liquid. Once again, the article might not fully do the concept justice so here's a video for you!Transformers Vol. 1While there have been many iterations of Transformers comics through the years, the newest series from Image Comics “Energon Universe” by Daniel Warren Johnson is exceptional…and an Eisner winner! Want to follow in Hakeem's footsteps and ride the um…zero gravity aircraft? Good luck!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?…and speaking of robots…check out our discussion of the rules governing the Terminator franchise. Was Hakeem any kinder, scientifically speaking, to the concept of Iron Man armor? Pull out two strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum and submit them in the little box to listen to our episode on the Farenghi, Star Trek The Next Generation's first attempt at a recurring villain race which went incredibly poorly for everyone concerned. From their first appearance in the show when they act like incredibly hyperactive gerbils in the The Last Outpost to their most recent focus in Star Trek Prodigy where we find out more about Dal's past and the conflict between his old life and his new life in First Con-tact to one of Deep Space Nine's many attempts to bring nuance to the species in Family Business when Quark and Rom have to deal with their mother Ishka's becoming involved in what passes for First Stage Feminism in a culture where women can't wear clothes. What a perfect alien race to talk about the day before the British Election gets the money grabbing Tory's out of power after 14 years! Who says Star Trek isn't political? If they do, make them put three strips of latinum in the appropriate hole! EPISODES INCLUDED: The Last Outpost (13:39), First Con-tact (43:35), Family Business (01:03:43) Talking Points Include: They Live and Ironic 4th July movies (we didn't watch ‘They Live,' but instead we watched ‘Slap Shot'), we briefly touch on the inevitable rousting of the Torys, the unfortunate antisemitic coding of the Farenghi, BE INTIMIDATED BY MILES' ARMS! The Robocop vs. The Terminator crossover by Dark Horse Comics, (CORRECTION: Frank Miller HAD started writing and drawing ‘Sin City' the year before) the Monster of the Week RPG, back to the Season One well of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Bee-Gees, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam, where IS the Enterprise's Engineer? Geordi's weird ‘oooooh-wee!' could the Farenghi ever have been a threat? Doctor Who's own Farneghi the Slitheen and how they killed Charlie's interest in Doctor Who back in 2005, the Farenghi design and how it's immediately undercut, Armin Shimmerman giving some great vibes this early on, how this remakes ‘Errand of Mercy,' Captain Picard does a swear, that one episode of ‘The X-Files' what Stephen King wrote contained a swear, Transformers: The Movie dropping a ‘S-Bomb,' Are we actually watching ‘The Mighty Boosh? We want Matt Berry to be a Star Trek Alien, Adele (sound goblins ate anything we had to say further on Adele, apologies for the weird edit) WHY IS ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS' the US Number One in January? Kid Kapici, Sea Power is a Hometown Band, Dal has a Yondu. Charlie is a freak, Charlie also likes to equate Dal from ‘Prodigy' to Poochie, Prodigy excelling at non-humanoid aliens, cartoons for kids these days don't have as much as a reset button as they used to, Prodigy finally does a Starfleet, Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis style decompression in relation to Picard, eventually Charlie will learn how to pronounce René Auberjonois' surname, Living Joy, Montell Jordan and THIS IS HOW WE DO IT, Charlie's love of KINECT Dance Games, Jake Sisko is disturbingly obsessed with his dad's love life, Quark is the lone conservative in a strangely progressive Farenghi family, THE RETURN OF JEFFREY COMBS, Farenghinar is the future tech-bros want, (CULTURAL NOTE: Rounders is the British equivalent of ‘Baseball,') how old is Jake Sisko? At this point during the episode, the weekly Madison Tornado siren test starts going off, Charlie deals with his own FCA in real life, Farenghi culture and their home world is almost set up to be a Gilliam-esque nightmare, once more a reminder that Miles didn't watch ‘Rejoined' for the Trill episode, this isn't a Farenghi Comedy Episode.
Show notes provided by Jack Adrien From its humble beginnings selling textile remnants, three brothers founded Hassenfeld Brothers in Providence, Rhode Island, in late 1923. Some six decades later, and more than a few corporate evolutions, its corporate decedent, Hasbro Industries, found it easier to promote its toy and entertainment products (e.g., comic book publication) directly to its prime customers (i.e., children) via daily, syndicated thirty-minute animated television series. Given that Hassenfeld Brothers produced the first twelve-inch G.I. Joe “action figure” in 1964, the toyline stands as one of the company's notable legacy properties. Hasbro relaunched the property as G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, a 3.75-inch (9.5 centimeter) scale toyline in 1982 with a corresponding Marvel Comics series, leading to a five-part G.I. Joe mini-series in 1983 (later titled “The M.A.S.S. Device”), and the full G.I. Joe: Real American Hero series in 1985 that ran for ninety-five episodes, ending on Thursday, November 20, 1986. Originally planned for a theatrical release, unexpected production delays led to Hasbro releasing The Transformers: The Movie feature before G.I. Joe: The Movie. Moreover, the poor box office performance of fellow Hasbro-owned properties My Little Pony: The Movie on Friday, June 06, 1986, and The Transformers: The Movie release on Friday, August 08, 1986, respectively, led to Hasbro choosing to release the G.I. Joe feature film direct-to-video and airing on television in syndication, first in its entirety and later as a five-part miniseries. With a current 43 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, G.I. Joe: The Movie neither captured the audience's imagination when it was released nor reignited nostalgic goodwill in the nearly forty years since. Whereas the visually dynamic three-minute opening sequence highlights everything we loved about the animated series, including the surprise revision of the show's theme song with Cobra-specific lyrics, the actual story was a hot mess. In a nutshell, the movie reveals that the Cobra terrorist organization was created by an ancient human/snake/insectoid hybrid Cobra-La civilization, led by Golobulus, refuged in the Himalayas as humanity evolved across the globe. Further, the movie retconned the Cobra leader, Cobra Commander, as a Cobra-La sleeper agent. Cobra-La's evil plan: launch hundreds of techno-organic pods into orbit to spread spores that will devolve humanity into mindless snake beasts. Serpentor (trust us, he would take too much time to explain in these show notes) leads Cobra's senior management to help Cobra-La execute its plan in exchange for preserving their humanity. Written by Ron Friedman, who also wrote The Transformers: The Movie, both movies share similar story elements (i.e., celebrity voice actors, new hero recruits, new antagonists, the “death” of a beloved leader, and a world-ending threat that requires the new leader to save the day). Join the Mint Condition crew of James, Kevin, Keith, and John as we discuss what works or doesn't with the new characters, uncredited story consultant and animated series wriBuzz Dixon's original story ideas, and so many missed opportunities. You will know the movie's true purpose (hint: introduce new characters to sell more toys) and unrealized potential. And knowing is half the battle. Yooo, Joe!

More than meets the eye! And the eye suffers from the constant barrage of flashing lights and bad music, as we cover The Transformers: The Movie. It was The Transformers TV show, but on the big screen! It had rock and roll music! The Transformers swore! The Transformers died! Originally released June 2018: The Transformers: The Movie is a six million dollar animated film that came out in 1986, co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the original The Transformers television series on which the film was based. The origins of that cartoon series was a line of toys produced by Hasbro, based on designs which originated in Japan, vehicles which transformed into robots. The film spawned an amazing hard rock soundtrack which is the focus of today's episode. On this episode you will hear conversations BJ had with Stan Bush, who wrote and sang the first single from the soundtrack, "The Touch," Vince Dicola, who wrote the song "Dare," also sung by Stan Bush (Vince also wrote the score for the film), and members from the three bands featured on the soundtrack: Jerry Best, bassist from Lion, who recorded a heavy metal version of The Transformers theme, Ernie Petrangelo, guitarist and songwriter from Rhode Island metal band NRG, responsible for the killer track "Instruments of Destruction," and Larry Gillstrom, guitarist from Canadian heavy metal band Kick Axe, who were credited as Spectre General for the soundtrack, they contributed two songs, "Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way" and "Hunger." This episode is a deep dive into one of the funnest movie soundtracks of the eighties. It's more than meets the ear! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week, a podcast patron paid to make us check in with those robots in disguise, and flash all the way back or THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE from 1986, aka the final acting credit from screen legend Orson Welles, or an animated Stan Bush music video. It's more than meets the eye!
Episode 335 begins with Japanese toy unveilings, featuring the eighth Beast Wars Again 2-pack, which includes Ghost Starscream and Decepticon Waspinator. Other highlights include MP-59 Rhinox and the unexpected Dramatic Capture Series Nemesis 3-Pack. From the North American perspective, the 40th Anniversary re-releases of Soundwave, Blaster, and their cassette companions are brought under scrutiny. Skybound kicks off a fresh take on the iconic G1 origin story with "Transformers" Issue 1, penned and illustrated by Darren Warren Johnson. The Twincast crew deliberates the significance of this comic and ponders whether it could be pivotal at all. The "40 for 40" segment then delves into 1992's array of Japanese Micromaster combiners and redecos, plus brand-new European releases. Each team member highlights their standout figure from that year, leading to a mix of anticipated and surprise choices. The episode wraps up with "bragging rights" and an intriguing chat about newly-emerged animation cels from The Transformers: The Movie, which have mysteriously made their way into the market.

The Transformers: The Movie attempted to do the impossible. Take a children's cartoon about alienrobots changing into cars and planes and a gun and make a commercially viable mainstream movie where they kill most of the characters kids loved including Optimus Prime. It didn't work nobody saww it. But the legacy lives on because so much of this became popular Transformers lore including Unicron, new characters like Rodimus Prime and the tradition of Optimus Prime being killed in every medium.
