In these, the first two Kull stories Howard published, we find Kull dealing with a conspiracy to murder him by a race of shapeshifting lizard people in "The Shadow Kingdom" and we see Kull contemplating his place in the world and even his own reality as he becomes ensnared in the wicked plot of a magician in "The Mirrors of Tuzun Thume". Sven Kull is a survivor of extreme abuse in former Socialist East Germany (GDR), through the Ernst Thälmann Pioneer Organization, which offered camps for gifted children. The extreme events at the holiday camp were similar to those described by survivors in the West. Created by Robert E. Howard, Kull first appeared in The Shadow Kingdom in 1929, one of the earliest true “sword and sorcery” tales.Howard wrote only a handful of complete Kull stories, but they stand among his most thoughtful and dreamlike works. The best known are The Shadow Kingdom, Kings of the Night, and today's story, The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune—a haunting story about the peril of looking too deeply into one's own reflection.You might remember the 1997 movie Kull the Conqueror — starring Kevin Sorbo (of Hercules fame) — which is the only movie explicitly featuring Kull.
